  My main domain is example.com, but also bought example.org and example.net. I've configured my webservers at *.example.com to handle requests from the other domains and redirect them correctly to example.com, but I'd rather not re-configure all my DNS records at example.org and example.net to be the same as example.com. Other than writing some ugly synchronization script, what should I do to have route53 answer queries against my "other" domains with the same data from the "main" domain?

  On Ubuntu it is possible to have multiple JVMs at the same time. The default one is selected with update-alternatives. But this does not set the JAVA_HOME environment variable, due to a debian policy. I am writing a launcher script (bash), which starts a java application. This java application needs the JAVA_HOME environment variable. So how to get the path of the JVM which is currently selected by update-alternatives?

I'm just writing my own file analyzer for general purpose, which can dump JPEG, PNG, EXE, ELF, ASN.1 DER encoded files, etc. in tree style. There are so many file formats in the world that I can't handle them all. So I'm wondering if there's some software already there, with pluggable architecture and a large established file format repository?

  One of the methods to do dual booting Windows with Linux OS is by installing grub boot loader onto Linux partition so you can retain Windows boot loader and let Windows handles the dual booting process. What's the odd that grub bootloader could partially overwrite the data at the beginning of the Linux partition and corrupt the file? Does grub actually check if there's a data at the beginning of the partition and move it to other location on the partition before writing its bootloader?

At first, the command I was using was writing an extra carriage return to the end of the string, but I found this command that prevented that: echo|set /p=hello>hello.txt However, now it's putting a trailing space at the end. I need only the string I specify to be written without any extra characters. Is this possible?

• Do I really need to reboot my host machine to restore net' connectivity to my VMware machines?

  I'm running VMware Workstation 6.54 on a Windows 7 host (64-bit). Whenever the host loses network connectivity the VMs never get their connection back until I reboot the machine (which I have to do right after I finish writing this). I've tried restarting the "relevant" services (like VMware Nat Service) but only a hard reboot works for me. Does this issue sound familiar?

In case of a desktop computer, plugging off the power cord looks like the most direct solution, but are there possible side-effects, apart from losing unsaved data?   I am writing a VIM function which should search for the text found in register a. In VIM I would start a search with / then press Ctrlr and finish off with a then Return. However this line in the function is not working: execute "/<c-r>a<Return>" It is throwing this error: E486: Pattern not found: <c-r>a<Return> How do I enter the literal Ctrlr into the function?   As it is not possible to directly share a serial port between two processes using Linux, I am looking for another way to achieve this, I have heard about socat but could not find a concrete example of how to realize the following: Split one physical serial port (/dev/ttyUSB0) into two virtual ports, one for reading and one for writing, as one process only needs to send data, and one only needs to receive data. I can no modify the sending application unfortunately.

• Are there any known issues with Windows-8 installed on a VHD?

  I installed Windows 8 preview on a VHD image and it seemed to work until I actually started using it. I´m seeing terrible performance. Installing anything makes everything else "stutter" or freeze for up to a couple of seconds at a time. I looked up hard disk performance in the task manager and this is what I found: It doesn't seem right it has 2500ms response time while reading/writing at those speeds. Is this an issue with my drive, installation or VHDs in general?

• Is data=journal on a separate device on Ext4 as good as using a RAID controller with battery backed cache for file system consistency?

  It seems to me that data=journal prevents file system inconsistency in the case of power failure. Using it with a dedicated journal device mitigates the performance penalty of writing the data twice. A power outage would still lose the data that is currently being written to the journal, but the file system on disk would always be consistent. If that amount of loss is acceptable, is a RAID controller with battery backed cache really worthwhile?
