• Problems installing Ubuntu server and desktop

  google translate Good afternoon I'm new to linux, I have to install a proxy and to them I decided on Ubuntu, the problem is that it took several days trying to install Ubuntu on any version and when installing i get error [Errno 5] input / output error says that is because the disc (cd or dvd) is bad or faulty change it and save all denuevo but I get the same error try changing the hard drive to see if my drive had no problem and I also get the same error , the machine where I want to mount the Ubuntu is a P4 with 1GB rAM and 40GB disk is more than the minimum requirements for even so I get the error ... • Battery not recognized on my laptop (and it recognizes my laptop as a desktop)

  I have installed Ubuntu (both 10.10 and 11.04 pre-release) on my laptop but my battery is not recognized and it is detected as a desktop system rather than a laptop. I have tried to get the output of cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state but the directory doesn't exist. I have tried another guide to paste the battery info into this directory but it doesn't allow me to do that and says that the directory doesn't exist, even though I'm trying to make it. I tried it in root Nautilus and even on an install of Lubuntu (with a root file manager) but it still failed to budge. I really don't know what to do as I have tried all the guides on the internet that I could find. Is there any way to change the configuration file(s) that detect the internal hardware of the computer. The /proc directory is a temporary RAM directory afaik. Is there a directory where that data is stored permanently and where the RAM reads if you know what I mean? Thanks in advance. AZorin This issue has been reported as bug #764513.

  I am thinking of applying a real dependency injection library to my toy C#/GTK# desktop application. I chose NInject, but I think this is irrelevant to my question. There is a database object, a main window and several utility window classes. It's clear that I can inject the database into every window object, so here DI is useful. But does it make sense to inject utility window classes into other window classes? Example: I have classes such as: class MainWindow {…} class AddItemWindow {…} class AddAttachmentWindow {…} class BrowseItemsWindow {…} class QueryBuilderWindow {…} class QueryBrowserWindow {…} class PreferencesWindow {…} … Each of the utility classes can be opened from MainWindow. Some utility windows can also be opened from other utility windows. Generally, there might be a really complex graph of who can open whom. So each of those classes might need quite a lot of other window classes injected. I'm worried that such usage will go against the suggestion not to inject too many classes at once and become a code smell. Should I use some kind of a service locator object here?

• Extension GLX missing...on a desktop PC

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.10 on a new PC with an Nvidia GTX 560 graphics card, but after installing the Nvidia proprietary drivers (either -current or -current-updates), Unity won't start. When trying to start it manually I get the message "extension GLX missing". I've searched around and found results like this question which point out it's a problem with Nvidia Optimus laptops.   Today while uploading file to FTP sever, the codes throw an error - "The remote server returned an error: 227 Entering Passive Mode", after research, I got some knowledge in FTP working principle. FTP may run in active or passive mode, which determines how the data connection is established. Active mode: command connection: client >1024  -> server 21 data connection:    client >1024  <-  server 20 passive mode: command connection: client > 1024 -> server 21 data connection:    client > 1024 <- server > 1024 In active mode, the client connects from a random unprivileged port (N > 1023) to the FTP server's command port(default port 21). If the client needs to transfer data, the client will use PORT command to tell the server:"hi, I opened port XXXX, please connect to me." and then server will use port 20 to initiate the data connection to that client port number. In passive mode, the client connects from a random unprivileged port (N > 1023) to the FTP server's command port(default port 21). If the client needs to transfer data, the sever will tell the client:"hi, I opened port XXXX , please connect to me." and then client will initiate the data connection to that sever port number. In a nutshell, active mode is used to have the server connect to the client, and passive mode is used to have the client connect to the server. So if your FTP server is configured to work in active mode only or the firewalls between your client and the server are blocking the data port range, then you will get error message, to fix this issue, just set System.Net.FtpWebRequest property UsePassive = false. • Remote Access to Owncloud Server

  I'm currently trying to setup my own own-cloud server, and I've got it fully installed, configured, and accessible from within my own local network. I cannot figure out how to access it from the outside. So far I've: Successfully setup port-forwarding on my local router. I've done so via 'single port forwarding' and 'port range forwarding' Ports 80, 443, 3306 (Apache-Full and MySQL) Successfully obtained my external IP address. I've also tested this magic number from within the network at #insertIPhere/owncloud and it did work. Successfully setup the server using SQLite Successfully setup the server using MySQL Created the following exceptions in my firewall: Allow In Port 80 (Apache Full) Allow In Port 443 (Apache Full) Allow In Port 3306 (MySQL) Tried connecting from several different remote networks, as to troubleshoot something on their end As far as trying to access it, I'm doing so through Google-Chrome and Mozilla Firefox trying to reach the server through #insertIPhere/owncloud using the above public IP address. So what have I missed, and how do I access my server from outside? Thanks in advance for your help and time, and I apologize in advance for what will probably result in my noobish mistake in networking. I've looked at the official documentation. • Fresh Ubuntu 12.10 install no desktop or wing bar

  After a fresh installm of ubuntu 12.10 (complete erase) after logging in it appears i have no taskbar or much of anything, although i can still execute my terminal with CTRL+ALT+T. i looked around a little, seems i'm not the only person who has had this problem. I found here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=12303179#post12303179 From there, i found myself here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-updates/+bug/1068341 I followed precisely the instructions provided which were: this problem is solved this way Switch to a terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F1). Login as your username. Install linux source (sudo apt-get install linux-source) and headers (sudo apt-get install linux-headers-3.5.0-17-generic). Uninstall nvidia driver - this depends on which version you installed (sudo apt-get remove nvidia-current or sudo apt-get remove nvidia-current-updates or sudo apt-get remove nvidia-experimental-304). Reinstall nvidia driver (sudo apt-get install nvidia-current-updates). If it successfully installs, restart the computer (sudo shutdown -r now). Source Desktop does not show when I installed nvidia drivers! I have rebooted, and i am still having the exact same problem. so i back at square one. can someone help me please? this is my room mates computer and i told him i was "fixing" it and now i feel like i've ruined it. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

• Purpose oriented user accounts on a single desktop?

  Starting point: I currently do development for Dynamics Ax, Android and an occasional dabble with Wordpress and Python. Soon, I'll start a project involving setting up WP on Google Apps Engine. Everything is, and should continue to, run from the same PC (running Linux Mint). Issue: I'm afraid of botching/bogging down my setup due to tinkering/installing multiple runtimes/IDE's/SDK's/Services, so I was thinking of using multiple users, each purposed to handle the task at hand (web, Android etc) and making each user as inert as possible to one another. What I need to know is the following: Is this a good/feasible practice? The second closest thing to this using remote desktops connections, either to computers or to VM's, which I'd rather avoid. What about switching users? Can it be made seamless? Anything else I should know? Update and clarification regarding VM's and whatnot: The reason I wish to avoid resorting to VM's is that I dislike the performance impact and sluggishness associated with it. I also suspect it might add a layer of complexity I wish to avoid. This answer by Wyatt is interesting but I think it's only partly suited for requirements (web development for example). Also, in reference to the point made about system wide installs, there is a level compromise I should accept as experessed by this for example. This option suggested by 9000 is also enticing (more than VM's actually) and by no means do I intend to "Juggle" JVMs and whatnot, partly due to the reason mentioned before. Regarding complexity, I agree and would consider what was said, only from my experience I tend to pollute my work environment with SDKs and runtimes I tried and discarded, which would occasionally leave leftovers which cause issues throught the session. What I really want is a set of well defined, non virtualized sessions from which I can choose at my leisure and be mostly (to a reasonable extent) safe from affecting each session from the other. And what I'm really asking is if and how can this be done using user accounts.

  Is it possible to access Desktop Composition Engine in Windows Vista from a winforms application? The DCE apparently involves applications rendering to DCE buffers instead of directly to the screen. Since a winforms app has no way of getting information about the monitor's refresh rate and scanline status (other than via DirectX), animation in a winforms app is subject to tearing effects. With DCE enabled, the tearing effects are lessened but still there (apparently the DCE can still grab a buffer that your app is halfway through writing to and render it to the screen, thereby producing the half-one-frame-half-of-the-next tearing effects). Is there any way for my winforms app to communicate with the DCE and possible avoid rendering during buffer switchover times?

  I am in the process of creating an internet radio station, but the two djs I have for it are not able to be in one place. I need for them to be able to login to a web based broadcasting session that still has full functionality. They need to be able to broadcast thier live shows with talk and music. The music will be stroed on the server. I have checked out the Broadwave media streaming server from NCH, but ti does not have the ability to login as a dj from a remote computer. I don't have any money for this, so I need it to be free. If this is not possible, I need it to be cheap!

The idea is that the prototype should use libraries and tools which are suitable for scaling up to full production and should be standard and free. Of the top of my head, the two biggest things I need are: an IDE a GUI toolkit / set of components a JDBC equivalent and/or possibly a full blown ORM system What are my options? Note I don't mind paying for full blown Visual Studio in the long run, but for now everything needs to be free, including the IDE.

• Why do we use HTTP and not remote invocations?

  Hey, first of all this is a conceptional question and I do not know if StackOverflow is the appropriate place - so my apologies if I am wrong. Nowadays the web is not only used for passing raw informations. Many and especially complex web applications are in use. These web application seem to be so complex that it seems irrational to use the HTTP protocol, which is based on so simple data exchange, plus it is stateless. Would it not be more convincing to use remote invocations for this web applications? The big advantage to my mind is a unified GUI by using HTML. But there are applications, which have no need for a graphical interfaces and then it comes to a point where the HTTP protocol is really cumbersome.

  Hello I want write my own desktop sharing application in Java. The application should have some very default features: Capture screen; Allow a remote connected user to click / edit fields. I was thinking to use Java Robot class for mouse movements / key pressing. The problem is i don't know what screen capture strategy to use. Should I make sequentially screen captures (on the hosting computer) every second, and send those captures with UDP via network, so that the clients can intercept the data-grams ? Isn't this a little overkill for the network ? What other strategies are available ? (Except trying an already existing app). PS: If necessary I can even write native code using JNI (still that's the last thing I planning to do).

  I need to write a program that, when minimized, lives in the System Tray, and I'll use Java 6's SystemTray API to do that. How can I make that application comes to the foreground when the user presses some hotkey? For example, the app is running but minimized. When the user presses CTRL-SHIFT-Y or something (or, like Google Desktop's search, CTRL twice) and the application is maximized. EDIT: I know about how to bring a Java window to the foreground. I have enough knowledge to build the application using DB and also using local files( system.IO - binary files ) to store and access the data for my application. But , i have no deployment experience and confused in choosing data storing option. Database using MDF may be good option ( may ease plenty of coding ) but i don't want to have SQL server on my desktop. as i am using WPF for building , my concern is that my application may get slow due to server response and design rendering of WPF. Then i tried to use only local data (binary files) to store the data and retrive using class and objects. but this coding is taking lot of time , so in the middle of the process i struck in the dilemma of going back to Database .   Greetings, With all the existing development towards web development and emerging technologies in that area, I'm left wondering; what is a state of the art way to implement desktop applications in this day and age? If you were to start a new application of considerable size from scratch what technology would you invest your efforts in (focusing on cross platform portability, decent performance and interoperability with existing standards)? I've looked into the Adobe Air platform which appears quite impressive but seems rather limited to support a large application. Would something like Java/SWT still be the sensible choice? Do things like GWT fit the bill? Thanks P.S. I'm leaving my question a bit open-ended in an effort to gather diverse answers. Surely this a subjective matter and there is no right and wrong answer.

  I have a repo (origin) on an USB key that I cloned on my hardrive (local). I moved "origin" to a NAS and I successfully tested cloning it from here. I would like to know if I can change the uri of "origin" in the settings of "local" so it now pull from the NAS, and not from the USB key. For now, I can see two solutions : - pushing everything to the usb-orign, and copy it to the NAS again (implies a lot of work due to new commits to nas-origin); - adding a new remote to "local" and delete the old one (i fear I'll break my historic).

• Apple: Bind a key to a commandline command?

  I have a Mac Powerbook running Leopard (10.5.8). Does Leopard provide an easy way to bind keys to commands which are typically run on the commandline? For example, I can open up Terminal.app and run the command /System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/ScreenSaverEngine.app/Contents/MacOS/ScreenSaverEngine which will activate the screensaver and lock my screen. What if I want to bind 'Apple-key L' to this command and execute this globally, regardless of which application is in use at the moment? Can I do this, or can I only run ScreenSaverEngine from a Terminal window? I tried to set up global keyboard shortcuts, but it seems that this won't allow me to bind a key to an arbitrary shell command: Note: You can create keyboard shortcuts only for existing menu commands. You cannot define keyboard shortcuts for general purpose tasks such as opening an application or switching between applications. I tried to set up a application keyboard shortcut, but commands like ScreenSaverEngine don't seem to be an application. Note that this Screensaver/Lock screen is just one example. I have come across other nifty commands which I might want to bind to a key-combination as well. I can do this in Gnome and Windows (with varying success). How about with Leopard?

• Git : Failed at pushing to remote server, ' REPOSITORY_PATH ' is not a git command

  I'm using Git with TortoiseGit on Windows XP, and I have a remote bare repository on Windows Vista 64bit version. When I tried to push my local files to remote bare repository, I got the following error message. git.exe push "origin" master:master git: 'C:/Git_Repository/.git' is not a git command. See 'git --help'. fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly the arbitrary URL is : username@serverip:C:/Git_Repository/.git The same arbitrary URL worked just fine while doing clone/fetch/pull. Access from a local directory in remote machine to this bare repository has no problem either so I belive there is something wrong with my path. I can push/pull at GitHub correctly but I was using URL provide by GitHub. Does anyone know what's wrong with my configuration? This was taken from their Launchpad page, it was created to be used in Crunchabng Linux and I can find packages for Arch, Fedora and Debian but no information on how to Install it in Ubuntu, I can't find it in the repositories either and the only PPA is 3 years old. How can I install it and is there a possibility that it could work in other environments other than Openbox?
