  • What can I learn to build a (kind of) recommendation system?

    - by lsmagalhaes
I'm learning how to develop an android app (nothing serious, just for learning and fun), so I devised the following goal: an app that learns with users actions and, some time later, starts to suggest some useful things. For example: The user add some notes daily, in the morning, and mark some of them as done generally on thursdays and sundays, at evening. Based on that behaviour and the relation of the notes marked as done, the app will prioritize notes that are more propense to be marked, and avoid notifying in days where no note is marked. This is a silly example but I think it ilustrates well what I want to do. I know this is a matter of machine learning, but I don't know where I should start learning. To anyone interested, I'm build a backend in Python, so any libraries or frameworks in this language are very welcome. The frontend, by the way, is sencha touch + phonegap.

  • Learning Java and logic using debugger. Did I cheat?

    - by centr0
After a break from coding in general, my way of thinking logically faded (as if it was there to begin with...). I'm no master programmer. Intermediate at best. I decided to see if i can write an algorithm to print out the fibonacci sequence in Java. I got really frustrated because it was something so simple, and used the debugger to see what was going on with my variables. solved it in less than a minute with the help of the debugger. Is this cheating? When I read code either from a book or someone else's, I now find that it takes me a little more time to understand. If the alghorithm is complex (to me) i end up writing notes as to whats going on in the loop. A primitive debugger if you will. When you other programmers read code, do you also need to write things down as to whats the code doing? Or are you a genius and and just retain it?

  • Learning Recommendations? Classroom? Tutorials?

    - by cdg
Hi there. Does anyone have any recommendations for a class (online) or tutorial that teaches android programing for dummies? It's frustrating knowing exactly what you want to do and no idea how to do it. Something that uses basic language and explains each line in detail to help a person remember how to do it later. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

  • How to avoid wasting time during compilation during development?

    - by user259576
Hello, I'm working with a small team of developers. My job is to convert a Make project (with Intellij Idea 9.0) into a Maven 2 project. The problem is : we spend a lot of time during the development. With Make, only one complete build was required and then any change did not consume a lot of time (almost instantaneously). On the other hand, with Maven 2, a little change takes a lot of time to run. Any solution ? Thanks.

  • How to avoid Foreign Keys constraints for all tables in DB truncate ?

    - by eugeneK
Hi, for designing purposes i need to truncate all DB which has lots of FK's. I cannot use DELETE command simply because some tables set with Identity of TinyInts and contain about 150 items. this is a query ( truncate all tables in selected DB ) i'm trying to run Declare @t varchar (1024) Declare tbl_cur cursor for select TABLE_NAME from INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES WHERE TABLE_TYPE = 'BASE TABLE' OPEN tbl_cur FETCH NEXT from tbl_cur INTO @t WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0 BEGIN EXEC ('TRUNCATE TABLE '+ @t) FETCH NEXT from tbl_cur INTO @t END CLOSE tbl_cur DEALLOCATE tbl_Cur What the best and easiest way to achieve truncate on DB with many FK's ?

  • how to avoid storing several times a repeated field of a Symfony form?

    - by user454760
Hello everybody, I am working with Symfony 1.4 and Doctrine. I have a model A with an email field. The form of A displays an input in which the user should insert the email correctly. But as everybody knows, sometimes they don't do it. To fix this I have inserted an extra field in the model (and in the form), called *repeat_email* to prevent the misspellings. Then, in the validation process, after validating all the fields, i use a global validator to compare the data of the two fields. This works, but I don't want to have the email stored two times in the database (I don't want the *repeat_email*). Is there any mechanism to use it in the validation process, but not to store it in the database? Thanks,

  • How to avoid lost calls to an external JS file before loading it.

    - by David
Hi, My issue is that multiple websites are going to include my JS file and when calling something like this: <script src="..."></script> hello.say("yay"); there going to be a race issue so sometimes it could make it sometimes not. i know that i can solve that easily by putting every function in a window.onload but that wouldn't be clean as i've seen other websites magically solve that like google analytics: .. Calling google analytics JS.. <script type="text/javascript"> try{ var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-xxxxxx-x"); <-- this an object ! pageTracker._trackPageview(); } catch(err) {} </script> How to do that?

  • How to avoid accidental deletions of databases in Lotus Notes?

    - by Saili
I have always worried about users deleting lotus notes databases by accident. We had one such case last week and I want to know how we can lock the databases so that users cannot delete them. Is there a way in Lotus Notes - either at the Db level or server level where we can set up the database so that only the administer of the db or the user with Manager access can delete the database? Thanks!

  • What pitfalls (if any) are there to learning C/C++ as a first language?

    - by thyrgle
Hi, I first learned C++ then moved to C (I know kind of backwards) and then I found a thing called iTunes U and began watching programming classes to extend my knowledge and noticed that Stanford and MIT both did not teach C or C++ as an introduction to computer programming. Then I began to wonder why they didn't begin teaching C/C++ because I thought C/C++ was more efficient than Java (which Stanford taught) and Python (which MIT taught). Or maybe there is no particular reason?

  • How can I avoid garbage collection delays in Java games? (Best Practices)

    - by Brian
I'm performance tuning interactive games in Java for the Android platform. Once in a while there is a hiccup in drawing and interaction for garbage collection. Usually it's less than one tenth of a second, but sometimes it can be as large as 200ms on very slow devices. I am using the ddms profiler (part of the Android SDK) to search out where my memory allocations come from and excise them from my inner drawing and logic loops. The worst offender had been short loops done like, for(GameObject gob : interactiveObjects) gob.onDraw(canvas); where every single time the loop was executed there was an iterator allocated. I'm using arrays (ArrayList) for my objects now. If I ever want trees or hashes in an inner loop I know that I need to be careful or even reimplement them instead of using the Java Collections framework since I can't afford the extra garbage collection. That may come up when I'm looking at priority queues. I also have trouble where I want to display scores and progress using Canvas.drawText. This is bad, canvas.drawText("Your score is: " + Score.points, x, y, paint); because Strings, char arrays and StringBuffers will be allocated all over to make it work. If you have a few text display items and run the frame 60 times a second that begins to add up and will increase your garbage collection hiccups. I think the best choice here is to keep char[] arrays and decode your int or double manually into it and concatenate strings onto the beginning and end. I'd like to hear if there's something cleaner. I know there must be others out there dealing with this. How do you handle it and what are the pitfalls and best practices you've discovered to run interactively on Java or Android? These gc issues are enough to make me miss manual memory management, but not very much.

  • What's the best replacement for timeGetTime to avoid wrap-around?

    - by phjr
timeGetTime seems to be quite good to query for system time. However, its return value is 32-bit only, so it wraps around every 49 days approx. It's not too hard to detect the rollover in calling code, but it adds some complexity, and (worse) requires keeping a state. Is there some replacement for timeGetTime that would not have this wrap-around problem (probably by returning a 64-bit value), and have roughly the same precision and cost?

  • Learning HTML5 & CSS3. Do I need javascript too?

    - by samfu_1
I'm familiar with the way html & css work together. Recently I was previewing some html5 content demo'd by apple and saw they used a html5/css/javascript. I'm at the point where I need to know whether or not javascript is a must-learn; or if I can find similar workarounds with CSS3 & HTML5. Do I need to learn javascript?

  • What is the best way to start learning how to program?

    - by Joe K
I'm very new to programming, but it has always interested me. I've tried to learn a couple of times except I don't know where to begin. What's a good language to learn first? What is a good website that can help me learn it? I once partitioned my hard drive and installed Ubuntu in an attempt to learn Python, but I was overwhelmed. I didn't know where to start or what to do. All suggestions, feedback, comments are welcome.

  • Which is the better way to avoid magic string keys? Using string const keys in a class or using enumeration?

    - by user596314
My idea is to avoid magic string keys in my Asp.Net MVC application. To do so, I want to create string constant keys to be shared in the application. For example, I can write TempData[MyClass.Message] or TempData[MyEnum.Message.ToString()] instead of TempData["Message"]. public class MyClass { public const string Message = "Message"; } and public enum MyEnum { Message, Others } My questions are: Which is the better way to avoid magic string keys? Using string const keys in a class or using enumeration together with ToString()?

  • Licensing and commercial use

    - by Avoid Trouble
I found a really cool piece of software under the AGPL license. I haven't heard of this before, so excuse the ignorance... But is it legal for me to simply bundle and use this product directly within my app (no modification) and resell for commercial use? Speaking of which, is there a simple table available that shows the implication of each open source license and whether or not it can be used by closed source, for-profit, $$$ type software?

  • How steep is the learning curve when moving from shared (cPanel) webhosting to a VPS (e.g. Linode)?

    - by pax
In all shared hosting environments, one can be agnostic to the running OS. What happens in the case of Linode? I know it allows pretty flexible Linux installations, but for starters, besides choosing a distro, does one need to do more Linux sysadmin stuff besides the basic web hosting (DNS management, MySql database creations, users ftp/ssh access/ backups)? Does Linode have a module that would cover cPanel's basic features? Does one need to install/start/upgrade each aspect of LAMP (software bundle)?

  • What Language to Learn?

    - by Gabe
I'm in the process of learning C++. But there's so much more that I want to do online - web apps, iphone apps, websites. So I'm thinking of learning another language, one that would allow me to make (or at least attempt to make) useful applications. Now, what language should I look into learning? And, how do you recommend I go about learning it?
