  • T-SQL Tuesday 24: Ode to Composable Code

    - by merrillaldrich
I love the T-SQL Tuesday tradition, started by Adam Machanic and hosted this month by Brad Shulz . I am a little pressed for time this month, so today’s post is a short ode to how I love saving time with Composable Code in SQL. Composability is one of the very best features of SQL, but sometimes gets picked on due to both real and imaginary performance worries. I like to pick composable solutions when I can, while keeping the perf issues in mind, because they are just so handy and eliminate so much...(read more)

  • Understanding and Benefiting from Code Contracts in .NET 4.0

One of the fundamental programming challenges is managing state. Chances are you have written dozens and dozens of methods that at the beginning check that certain conditions are met, and that another set of conditions is met when the method returns. With Code Contracts in .NET 4.0, you can make things considerably easier. Read on to learn how.

  • Slides, Code, and Photos from SPTechCon San Francisco 2011

    - by Brian Jackett
Note: Updated 2/12/11 with links to both presentation materials.     This past week I presented two sessions at SPTechCon San Francisco 2011.  The first session was “The Expanding Developer Toolbox for SharePoint 2010” which .  Thanks to all of my attendees for this session.  They had so many great questions that we ran out of time before covering all of the planned material.  Especially for them I’ve provided the slides and code samples to walk through them on their own.     The second session was “Real World Deployment of SharePoint 2007 Solutions”.  In talking with attendees before the session many were looking for 2007 content.  At the conference SharePoint 2010 was represented much more heavily than 2007, so I was glad to fill a need in the community. Slides and Code   Click here for “The Expanding Developer Toolbox for SharePoint 2010” materials   Click here for “Real World Deployment of SharePoint 2007 Solutions” materials Photos Pictures on FaceBook   Click here Pictures on Windows Live (higher res)     SPTechCon San Fran Feb 2011 VIEW SLIDE SHOW DOWNLOAD ALL Side Trips     Aside from the conference itself I also got to take a few side trips during the nights.  A special thanks to Dux Raymond Sy (Twitter) for organizing a Mongolian Hot Pot dinner on Monday (see pictures) and Michael Noel (Twitter) for organizing a Korean bbq dinner on Tuesday (again see pictures).  These were both new experiences for me and I thoroughly enjoyed the time with friends and trying something new.  Another thanks to Mark Miller (Twitter) for giving a personal tour around various sites of San Fran to myself and a few others.  It was great hearing the backstory of different neighborhoods and buildings from someone who had lived in the area for years.  Overall a great addition to the conference itself. Conclusion     This is the 3rd SPTechCon I’ve attended and the conference is getting better with each iteration.  The fine folks at BZ Media should be proud of the effort they’ve put in.  The next SPTechCon will be in Boston in June.  As of right now I won’t be attending that one but I highly recommend anyone to go if you have the chance.         -Frog Out

  • Reduce Repetitive Initialization Code in C++ Applications by Using Delegating Constructors

You're often required to repeat identical pieces of initialization code in every constructor of a class that declares multiple constructors. That's because unlike a few other programming languages, The C++ programming language doesn't allow a constructor to call another constructor of the same class. Luckily, this problem is about to disappear with the recent approval of a new C++0x feature called delegating constructors which are explained in this C++ tutorial.

  • Upgrading Code from 2007 to 2010

    - by MOSSLover
So I’ve been doing some upgrades just to see if things will work from 2007 to 2010.  So far most of the stuff I want works, but obviously there are some things that break.  Did you guys know that in 2007 you could add a webpart to the view pages for lists and libraries without losing the toolbar?  In 2010 the ribbon disappears every time you add a webpart.  So if you are using Scot Hillier’s Codeplex project to hide buttons it will not work the same way, because the ribbon is going to disappear altogether. I have also learned another reason why standalone installations are the bane of my existence.  Nine times out of ten the installation is done using Network Service as the application pool account.  You are wondering why is this bad?  Well, let’s just say the site collection administrator with local admin rights wants to attach the IIS Worker process and debug say a webpart.  Visual Studio 2010 will throw a nasty error that tells you that you are not an administrator.  You will say, but I am an administrator?  I have all the correct group permissions on the server and on SQL and in SharePoint.  Then you will go in and decide let’s add my own admin account just to see if I can attach the debugger and you will notice that works properly.  So the morale of the story is create a separate account on your development environment to run all the SharePoint Services and such.  You don’t need to go all out and create the best practices amount of accounts if it’s just your dev environment.  I would at least create one single account to run all your SharePoint process (Services, SQL, and App Pool).  Also, don’t run a standalone install unless you want to kill kittens (this is a quote from Todd Klindt).  We love kittens they are cute and awesome.  Besides you learn more if you click Complete and just skip standalone.  You will learn how to setup SQL Server 2008 and you will learn how to configure your environment.  It will help you in the long run.  So I have ranted enough for today I figure these are enough tidbits for you this time around.  The two of you who read my blog and I know some of you are friends who don’t understand SharePoint.  I might as well have just done “wahwahwahwah” in Charlie Brown adult speak.  Thanks for reading as usual.  I’ll catch you all when I complain more about the upgrade process and share more tidbits, which will inevitably become a presentation at a conference or two. • ReSharper C# Live Template for Dependency Property and Property Change Routed Event Boilerplate Code

    - by Bart Read
I don't know about you but it took me about 5 seconds to get royally fed up of typing the boilerplate code necessary for creating WPF (and Silverlight) dependency properties and, if you want them, their associated property change routed events. Being a ReSharper user, I wondered if there was any live template for doing this. It turns out there's nothing built in, but there are many examples of templates for creating dependency properties out there on the web, such as this excellent one from Roy...(read more)

  • Advice for a getting a job in algorithmic trading - writing faster code

    - by Alex
I am currently an intermediate Java developer working in the financial industry. I am considering trying to get into an algorithmic trading developer position. I am looking for any advice/resources that may help me obtain such a job. My naive initial thoughts are to concentrate on learning how to write faster, more memory efficient code whilst maintaining readability. Can anyone point me in the right direction of some useful resources for what I am aiming to achieve?

  • what are the advantages and disadvantages of putting code for an unfinished project on github

    - by cori
I'm stating to work on a project that I intend to release as open source via the githubs. What are the advantages of putting the code on github from the outset, as opposed to waiting until the project is in a working state before publishing. If it matters, this particular project is a C# app/service, and I have only a free github account (so I can't make it private and then pull back the covers later)

  • Turning your code inside out (functional style) compared to a OO paradigm

    - by Acaz Souza
I have find this article Turning Your Code Inside Out and I want to know how this approach described in article is for OO programmers/languages. Is this style of design used in OO programmers/languages? What's downsides and goodsides of this approach in a OO language? Update: OO objects have state and behavior, the design explained in article is stateless. Is not only Single Responsability Principle. (If I'm talking shit, please explain to me instead of only downside/close votes)

  • Auditing database source code changes

    - by John Paul Cook
Auditing changes to database source code can be easily implemented with a database trigger. Here’s a simple implementation of stored procedure auditing using an audit table and a database trigger. It assumes that a schema named Audit already exists. CREATE TABLE Audit . AuditStoredProcedures ( DatabaseName sysname , ObjectName sysname , LoginName sysname , ChangeDate datetime , EventType sysname , EventDataXml xml ); Notice the EventDataXml column. Using an nvarchar column to store the source text...(read more)

  • How do you author code

    - by garbagecollector
This is something I was never taught. I have seen alot of different types of authoring styles. I code primarily in Java and Python. I was wondering if there was a standard authoring style or if everything is freestyle. Also if you answer would you mind attaching the style you use to author files that your create at home or at work. I usually just go @author garbagecollector @company garbage inc.

  • Behaviour tree code example?

    - by jokoon
http://altdevblogaday.org/2011/02/24/introduction-to-behavior-trees/ Obviously the most interesting article I found on this website. What do you think about it ? It lacks some code example, don't you know any ? I also read that state machines are not very flexible compared to behaviour trees... On top of that I'm not sure if there is a true link between state machines and the state pattern... is there ?
