  • Entity Framework 4.3.1 Code based Migrations and Connector/Net 6.6

     Code-based migrations is a new feature as part of the Connector/Net support for Entity Framework 4.3.1. In this tutorial we'll see how we can use it so we can keep track of the changes done to our database creating a new application using the code first approach. If you don't have a clear idea about how code first works we highly recommend you to check this subject before going further with this tutorial. Creating our Model and Database with Code First  From VS 2010  1. Create a new console application 2.  Add the latest Entity Framework official package using Package Manager Console (Tools Menu, then Library Package Manager -> Package Manager Console). In the Package Manager Console we have to type  Install-Package EntityFramework This will add the latest version of this library.  We will also need to make some changes to your config file. A <configSections> was added which contains the version you have from EntityFramework.  An <entityFramework> section was also added where you can set up some initialization. This section is optional and by default is generated to use SQL Express. Since we don't need it for now (we'll see more about it below) let's leave this section empty as shown below. 3. Create a new Model with a simple entity. 4. Enable Migrations to generate the our Configuration class. In the Package Manager Console we have to type  Enable-Migrations; This will make some changes in our application. It will create a new folder called Migrations where all the migrations representing the changes we do to our model.  It will also create a Configuration class that we'll be using to initialize our SQL Generator and some other values like if we want to enable Automatic Migrations.  You can see that it already has the name of our DbContext. You can also create you Configuration class manually. 5. Specify our Model Provider. We need to specify in our Class Configuration that we'll be using MySQLClient since this is not part of the generated code. Also please make sure you have added the MySql.Data and the MySql.Data.Entity references to your project. using MySql.Data.Entity;   // Add the MySQL.Data.Entity namespace public Configuration() { this.AutomaticMigrationsEnabled = false; SetSqlGenerator("MySql.Data.MySqlClient", new MySql.Data.Entity.MySqlMigrationSqlGenerator());    // This will add our MySQLClient as SQL Generator } 6. Add our Data Provider and set up our connection string <connectionStrings> <add name="PersonalContext" connectionString="server=localhost;User Id=root;database=Personal;" providerName="MySql.Data.MySqlClient" /> </connectionStrings> <system.data> <DbProviderFactories> <remove invariant="MySql.Data.MySqlClient" /> <add name="MySQL Data Provider" invariant="MySql.Data.MySqlClient" description=".Net Framework Data Provider for MySQL" type="MySql.Data.MySqlClient.MySqlClientFactory, MySql.Data, Version=6.6.2.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=c5687fc88969c44d" /> </DbProviderFactories> </system.data> * The version recommended to use of Connector/Net is 6.6.2 or earlier. At this point we can create our database and then start working with Migrations. So let's do some data access so our database get's created. You can run your application and you'll get your database Personal as specified in our config file. Add our first migration Migrations are a great resource as we can have a record for all the changes done and will generate the MySQL statements required to apply these changes to the database. Let's add a new property to our Person class public string Email { get; set; } If you try to run your application it will throw an exception saying  The model backing the 'PersonelContext' context has changed since the database was created. Consider using Code First Migrations to update the database (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=238269). So as suggested let's add our first migration for this change. In the Package Manager Console let's type Add-Migration AddEmailColumn Now we have the corresponding class which generate the necessary operations to update our database. namespace MigrationsFromScratch.Migrations { using System.Data.Entity.Migrations; public partial class AddEmailColumn : DbMigration { public override void Up(){ AddColumn("People", "Email", c => c.String(unicode: false)); } public override void Down() { DropColumn("People", "Email"); } } } In the Package Manager Console let's type Update-Database Now you can check your database to see all changes were succesfully applied. Now let's add a second change and generate our second migration public class Person   {       [Key]       public int PersonId { get; set;}       public string Name { get; set; }       public string Address {get; set;}       public string Email { get; set; }       public List<Skill> Skills { get; set; }   }   public class Skill   {     [Key]     public int SkillId { get; set; }     public string Description { get; set; }   }   public class PersonelContext : DbContext   {     public DbSet<Person> Persons { get; set; }     public DbSet<Skill> Skills { get; set; }   } If you would like to customize any part of this code you can do that at this step. You can see there is the up method which can update your database and the down that can revert the changes done. If you customize any code you should make sure to customize in both methods. Now let's apply this change. Update-database -verbose I added the verbose flag so you can see all the SQL generated statements to be run. Downgrading changes So far we have always upgraded to the latest migration, but there may be times when you want downgrade to a specific migration. Let's say we want to return to the status we have before our last migration. We can use the -TargetMigration option to specify the migration we'd like to return. Also you can use the -verbose flag. If you like to go  back to the Initial state you can do: Update-Database -TargetMigration:$InitialDatabase  or equivalent: Update-Database -TargetMigration:0  Migrations doesn't allow by default a migration that would ocurr in a data loss. One case when you can got this message is for example in a DropColumn operation. You can override this configuration by setting AutomaticMigrationDataLossAllowed to true in the configuration class. Also you can set your Database Initializer in case you want that these Migrations can be applied automatically and you don't have to go all the way through creating a migration and updating later the changes. Let's see how. Database Initialization by Code We can specify an initialization strategy by using Database.SetInitializer (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg679461(v=vs.103)). One of the strategies that I found very useful when you are at a development stage (I mean not for production) is the MigrateDatabaseToLatestVersion. This strategy will make all the necessary migrations each time there is a change in our model that needs a database replication, this also implies that we have to enable AutomaticMigrationsEnabled flag in our Configuration class. public Configuration()         {             AutomaticMigrationsEnabled = true;             AutomaticMigrationDataLossAllowed = true;             SetSqlGenerator("MySql.Data.MySqlClient", new MySql.Data.Entity.MySqlMigrationSqlGenerator());    // This will add our MySQLClient as SQL Generator          } In the new EntityFramework section of your Config file we can set this at a context level basis.  The syntax is as follows: <contexts> <context type="Custom DbContext name, Assembly name"> <databaseInitializer type="System.Data.Entity.MigrateDatabaseToLatestVersion`2[[ Custom DbContext name, Assembly name],  [Configuration class name, Assembly name]],  EntityFramework" /> </context> </contexts> In our example this would be: The syntax is kind of odd but very convenient. This way all changes will always be applied when we do any data access in our application. There are a lot of new things to explore in EF 4.3.1 and Migrations so we'll continue writing some more posts about it. This time however, no matter what I try imapsync refuses to work claiming my credentials are incorrect - I've checked them time and time again and they are 100% correct.     I can't get my desktop to connect to my laptop through remote desktop connection. Unfortunately I can only get my laptop to connect to my desktop (quite useless). Finally, both computers are on the same Homegroup so that RDC can be accessed by one click through the network section of Windows. They're also on the same workgroup, MSHOME, just to see if that helps.

If I sent a mail with [email protected] in the FROM header field, then postfix should use the credentials: [email protected]:psswd1 to do SASL authentication with gmail SMTP server. Similarly with [email protected], it should use [email protected]:passwd2. Sounds fairly simple. I checked the configurations multiple times and even compared them to those in various blog posts addressing the same issue but found them to be more or less the same as mine.   • Can't access IIS 7 server URL from the same IIS 7 server.

    We have an intranet site ie, xxx.yyyy.com, that users access by entering "http"://xxx.yyy.com. Our problems started when we migrated to IIS 7 running on a new 2003 server. We got rid of our single-sign on code and implemented a security model where we capture a user's domain credentials which we then authenticate against a DB. In order to get the domain credentials passed to our ASP.NET app, we have the following settings: Anonymous Authentication:Disabled ASP.NET Impersonation: Enabled Basic/Digest/Forms Authentication: Disabled Windows Authentication: Enabled We allow "*" and deny "?" in the web.config. Browsing "http"://xxx.yyy.com from any client PC results in a domain login prompt, and if your enter a proper user/pwd, you can get in. However, browsing "http"://xxx.yyy.com while remoting into the server results in 3 domain login prompts and eventually a 401 error - unauthorized. We have traced this behavior to problems with our web site where we have pages doing "screen scraping" using the HttpRequest calling a url on the same server. When doing a HttpRequest from any other client, using a test harness that passes authorized credentials, all is good. So internal HttpRequest calls on the server fail, just like attempts to browse that server's url from within a remote session. Why would a to "http"://xxx.yyy.com on server xxx.yyy.com fail authentication?

  • How do I install the main repositories for RHEL6

    We've setup RHEL6 on a new server. As far as we can tell, our subscription is all setup properly. However, when I run yum repolist, it doesn't show any repositories. /etc/yum.repos.d/redhat.repo is empty. I tried pasting in the content from another RHEL6 server's redhat.repo but as soon as I run yum, it wipes it out again. I just need to get the basic RedHat repositories setup so I can install packages. EDIT: Using the GUI, I went to System Administration Red Hat Subscription Manager. Under the 'Products' tab, it did not show any products. EDIT: When I run yum update, here's what I get: # yum update Loaded plugins: product-id, refresh-packagekit, security, subscription-manager This system is receiving updates from Red Hat Subscription Management. Setting up Update Process No Packages marked for Update When I log in to RedHat customer portal, it shows that subscription as active. EDIT: To make sure I wasn't having a subscription issue. I re-registered and re-subscribed. I have tried through CLI tools (such as ldapadd, ldapwhoami, etc) and also ruby/ldap. The bind with these credentials fails with a invalid credentials error. I thought that it could be an ACL issue, however, the ACLs on slapd.conf seem to be right: access to attrs=userPassword by self write by dn.sub="ou=people,dc=site,dc=com" read by anonymous auth access to * by * read I was suspecting that maybe OpenLDAP doesn't compare against userPassword? Or maybe some ACL configuration I am missing that is somehow affecting the read access to userPassword for the specific DN. I'm really lost here, any suggestion appreciated! Cheers, Marcelo.

  • Driver issue for 7850 HD Diamond Windows 7

    I have an issue with windows 7 implementing the drivers ati provides for my 7850 HD Diamond video card. The video card is plugged in correctly to the PCIE 2.0 slots of my motherboard (p6t asus) with more then enough power. Fortunately the card works as I have my monitor plugged into the card itself and I can see just fine. However windows 7 does not replace the standard vga default microsoft driver with catalyst drivers that I've tried installing from online as well as the CD. Every time I install the drivers using Catalyst Install manager it always finishes with "Install complete(Warnings occured)". I then see the warnings it has which it instead reports that it successfully installed the SDK, Catalyst Install Manager, and HDMI/AUDIO packages. When I check my device manager after that, the display adapter still shows as standard vga and that its still using microsoft default display adapter. Now this current card is replacing an old card of mine which is the ATI 4890 HD which works beautifully. In fact for the old card to work, all I need to do is go to device manager and right click on standard vga - click update driver and windows 7 magically finds the correct driver to install and everything is good. Not so with the new card. I've even went into my regedits and uninstalled every bit of ati driver software before reinstalling my new card. Nothing's worked thus far. I've already exchanged my card out once and talked to customer support from my motherboard, microsoft, and ati all blaming the other. Please help me out!!

  • Unable to communicate with EWS from Exchange Server

    We are currently running a 2 server exchange environment with Edge services on their own. We are in the process of trying to deploy a piece of software that uses the EWS API which has brought me to this form, the software ties into the EWS service and uses it to forward messages (this is failing). Using the software error logs I have found that accessing EWS from the exchange server is not possible. From my work machine and an external address I can type the following https ://webmail.companyname.com/ews/exchange.asmx and be prompted for a username and password, once I enter credentials I get a screen full of information from services.wsdl. The problem is when I try the same URL from the exchange server and get the credentials prompt I cannot get past it. Even with the same credentials that work externally and from my desk it just keeps looping around. Capture from software log (11:41:32.6415 000017e4 System.Net.WebException: The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized.) I have also found the same results when trying https://webmail.companyname.com/ Autodiscover /Autodiscover.xml . Environment Information Server 2008 STD 64bit Exchange 2007 SP1 Purchased Cert – webmail.companyname.com I have also confirmed that all services have the proper internal and external URL’s. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Map FTP folder to folder on different FTP server

    In my team we work a lot with FTP. We upload and download files from several different servers daily. Currently every member of the team manages access credentials to each FTP server locally on their own machine. I am looking for a way to set up a central FTP server that we can connect to, and from there, navigate to folders that each represent one of the other FTP servers that we connect to daily. Something like this: In-house central FTP server: |- FolderA --> server A root folder |- FolderB --> server B root folder |- FolderC --> server C root folder A setup like this, would mean that we can manage access credentials on the central FTP server, and team members would only need to have the access credentials to the central FTP server, and from there they could navigate to the other servers through these "virtual" folders. We could potentially develop our own custom FTP server that just forward requests to the remote FTP servers, but i feel like something like this (or something similar) would already have been done.   • Lucid Lynx login issue

    Recently upgraded from Karmic to Lynx. Upgrade seemed to go well, no noticeable issues. I logged in, and my window manager wasn't starting. An application would appear, but sans control buttons and border, so figured the windows manager needed to be given a swift kick. Opened a web browser and a quick google had me run "metacity --replace &" and everything popped up. I re-ran the Compiz configuration tool to enable my rotating desktop cube to the way I liked it, and had to reconfigure my desktop switcher to the right number of desktops (although the first time I ran it, it crashed on the panel and reloaded...odd, but once it relaunched it seemed fine.) Today I installed updates, rebooted and logged in for the second time since my upgrade. Again, the window manager was dead, and my compiz settings were gone, and the workspaces were set back to four (and when I clicked on the preferences to change them, it crashed on the panel and reloaded again). Resetting everything made things look somewhat normal again. I'm guessing it'll work until I reboot again. Googling around isn't turning up similar complaints about Lucid Lynx and the window manager. Before I go deleting preference files, anyone else know of this kind of issue and what could be done about it? Or should I start taking the stab in the dark approach of deleting preference files hoping one of them is corrupt or has something unsupported in it that's throwing LL for a loop?

  • Do you really need cable management for a cabinet with just switches and patch panels?

    We are about to start wiring out a building expansion and our vendor has laid out the racks in the following configuration: Option 1 1U Fiber patch panel 2U Cable Manager 2U 48 port Patch Panel 2U Cable Manager 2U 48 port Patch Panel 2U Cable Manager 1U 48 port Switch 2U Cable Manager 1U 48 port Switch Total = 15U All the patch panels would be connected to the switches with 1ft+ cables fed through cable management. What I am considering instead is: Option 2 1U Fiber patch panel 1U 24 port Patch Panel 1U 48 port Switch 2U 48 port Patch Panel 1U 48 port Switch 2U 48 port Patch Panel Total = 8U All of the patch panels would be connected to the switches with .5 ft cables directly on their face with the top 24 ports of each switch patched to the patch panel above it and the bottom 24 ports of each switch patched to the patch panel beneath it which would not require any cable management. If I go with option 2 it save all of the space used by cable management and allows us to keep adding on switches and patch panels at the end without having to re-cable all of the patch panels above. Our vendor has indicated that this is not best practice and that .5ft cables will introduce cross talk. I could understand that being the case if we were connecting the .5 ft cable directly into another switch but we are connecting it to a patch panel that likely has another 150 ft cable run from the back of the patch panel out to the port in the building in which case the real resulting cable is 150.5 ft at minimum before even connecting it to a PC. It seems like it makes much more sense to go with option 2. It is easier to expand, saves space, and saves money on cabling and cable management. Does this kind of configuration make sense or is there a legitimate reason to choose Option 1 over Option 2?

  • Metacity/Compiz not staring upon Login Ubuntu 10.10

    TLDR: As of this afternoon, I do not have a window manager when I login to Ubuntu 10.10. I would like to have window manager on login without needing to add to startup. Just started using linux again as my home OS. (Used it for a long time years ago but been on windows up until this past weekend) so this may be kind of n00b-ish :) Anyways, up until today, everything on my machine was running okay. I did not have compiz running as the default wm because I'm running NVidia Drivers and Xinerama (and as I understand Xinerama & Compiz don't work well together). I made no changes to my xorg / etc but today when I logged in, I had to manually start metacity from command line to get any window manager. Really not sure what would be causing this or what I can do to get it working again. My xorg.conf is available here: https://gist.github.com/845618. My default Window Manager is set to /usr/bin/metacity in Configuration Editor under /desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager. p.s. Any tips on how to run 3 monitors where I can move windows between screens without Xinerama would be appreciated but that's prolly for another thread :)

  • Single Sign On 802.1x Wireless - saying “Connecting to <SSID>”, hangs for 10 seconds, fails with “Unable to connect to <SSID>, Logging on…”.

    We are implementing WiFi on Windows 7 machines in our corporate environment. Machines should be able to log into the domain by WiFi as the Machine (Pre-Logon), and as the User (Post-Logon). We have everything working correctly except for 2 things: 1) Sometimes the login scripts don't run 2) The user VLAN is sometimes different than the machine vlan, and no DHCP renew occurs after user logon. I am clear that both these problems should be fixable by using the "Single Sign On" Option under the 802.1x Wireless Vista GPO, and setting the wireless to connect immediately before user logon and also by enabling "This network uses different VLAN for authentication with machine and user credentials" If I enable these GPO settings in a lab, the computer does authenticate & gets WIFI before the user logs on, so when the login box is displayed, it says “Windows will try to connect to ”, even though it is already connected (which should be ok?). Enter the user credentials and it goes to a screen saying “Connecting to ”, hangs for 10 seconds, fails with “Unable to connect to , Logging on…”. Desktop fires up and then the user re-authenticates with no problem as himself instead of the machine, but by that point, we defeat the point of the WiFi SSO “before user logon”. Also by that point, no DHCP renew seems to occur, and the user is still stuck with the wrong IP address for the new VLAN. When the “Connecting to ” screen comes up, there’s no indication on the AP or the Radius server that anything whatsoever is happening after credentials are entered until after the domain logon. Also with this policy enabled, sometimes windows hangs on a black screen indefinitely until I disable the Wireless NIC, so something is knackered for sure. What have I missed? Suggestions are much appreciated... /P

  • What is my BaseDN supposed to be with the following configuration of OpenLDAP?

    I have the following in my OpenLDAP configuration. Using the latest version OpenLDAP on Centos 5.3. Installed using yum. From my /etc/openldap/slapd.conf database bdb suffix "dc=company,dc=com" rootdn "cn=Manager,dc=company,dc=com" From my /etc/openldap/ldap.conf BASE dc=company,dc=com I have successfully added an entry with ldapadd and retrieved it with ldapsearch from a local bash shell on the box. Now I am trying to get a Graphical Editor to connect to this server remotely so I can enter people from my laptop. But I am having no luck. I tried JXplorer, and it connects with Anonymous bind without me having to specify a BaseDN but I can't edit anything that way. If I try and give it a user name and password, using Manager and my rootpw I have in clear text just for testing, every GUI Client on my remote laptop complains about my BaseDN not being the correct format when I enter dc=company,dc=com and I tried cn=Manager,dc=company,dc=com. Error opening connection: [LDAP: error code 34 - invalid DN] I have tried multiple clients and all of them connect as anonymous, none let me connect authenticated where I can actually create or edit anything. I am using Manager as my username and the password from rootpw, is that correct?

  • Join Domain from VM

    I have two VMs running on VMWare Player. I use NAT adapter settings. The host machine for VMs is running on corporate network. First VM has Domain controller running and I can log in on that machine using domain credentials. I named domain wm.local When I run IP config on this machine: IP: 192.168.87.132 Def Gataway: 192.168.87.2 DNS server: 192.168.87.2 DHCP server: 192.168.87.254 Second VM cannot join domain. When I try it with domain WM I'm propmted for credentials. And I enter Administrator credentials and than it waits for some time and I get response: "The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted" If i type wm.local as domain when trying to join it does not prompt me to login but just shows "An Active Directory Domain Controller (AD DC) for the domain wm.local could not be contacted. And here it takes no time to get this error message. Ipconfig on this machine: IP: 192.168.87.134 Def Gataway: 192.168.87.2 DNS server: 192.168.87.2 DHCP server: 192.168.87.254 I can ping second VM from first one. And I disabled firewalls on both machines. Any ideas? Is there any manual for this?

  • Can't login after upgrading to Windows 8.1

    This afternoon, I upgraded my work laptop from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. I had previously had a local account, but after the upgrade, it prompted me to enter my windows account credentials, which I had set up beforehand at some point. I entered my password and clicked next, went through another screen or two, grew tired with the process, and clicked whatever the equivalent button to "skip this step" that I was presented with. Now I can't log in. Not with my (previous) local account password, and not with my windows account password. It's a Dell with biometric identification, which I had set up previously, so I put my finger on the reader and it complained that I couldn't use that fingerprint because I had changed my password. But, I hadn't wittingly changed my password at all. I assume that what happened is that, by entering my credentials, my local account was tied to the Windows account, but because I cancelled the process partway through, something went wrong and I cannot log in. A few questions: 1) How do I log in with my windows account credentials? Should LOCALMACHINENAME\username, which was my previous login method, still work for the Windows account? When I booted to safemode it prompted me with WindowsAccount\myemailaddress, which allowed me to login there, but the regular login doesn't accept the '@' symbol. 2) Is there any way to make that account local-only again? I can't find any way of doing it. 3) I managed to enable the local administrator account and get back into the box; failing all else, is there a quick way to migrate my old profile over to a new user?

  • SSO to multiple websites from Sharepoint website

    We have an intranet based on Sharepoint 2010. In this intranet we have several links to other webservers within the same Active Directory, for example a link to our Outlook Web Access site on our Exchange 2010 environment. We have three different setups which visit this Sharepoint environment and the other webservers: Windows 7 clients that are a member of the Active Directory Home pc's that connect through a SSL VPN appliance Standalone thin clients (Windows 7 embedded) within the corporate network The goal is to let people only sign in once. In the first group this isn't a problem because the AD Integrated Authentication works fine and the Windows logon is passed on to Sharepoint and the other webservers. The second group is also working fine because of the LDAP integration that the SSL VPN appliance uses. The third group is however experiencing issues. They need to enter their credentials everytime they click a link to another webserver. They first need to enter credentials for accessing the Sharepoint environment. When clicking the link for their webmail they have to re-enter their credentials, and so on. Can someone tell me what the best solution would be to also get SSO working fine for the third group? Some extra information: We also have a Forefront TMG server in our environment. I read somewhere that Forefront might be part of a solution for this problem, but not sure how.   • A Rose by Any Other Name..

    It is always a good start when you can steal a title line from one of the best writers in the English language.  Let’s hope I can make the rest of this post live up to the opening.  One recurring problem with SQL server is moving databases to new servers.  Client applications use a variety of ways to resolve SQL Server names, some of which are not changed easily <cough SharePoint /cough>.  If you happen to be using default instances on both the source and target SQL Server, then the solution is pretty simple.  You create (or bug the network admin until she creates) two DNS “A” records. One points the old name to the new IP address.  The other creates a new alias for the old server, since the original system name is now redirected.  Note this will redirect ALL traffic from the old server to the new server, including RDP and file share connection attempts.    Figure 1 – Microsoft DNS MMC Snap-In   Figure 2 – DNS New Host Dialog Box Both records are necessary so you can still access the old server via an alternate name. Server Role IP Address Name Alias Source 10.97.230.60 SQL01 SQL01_Old Target 10.97.230.80 SQL02 SQL01 Table 1 – Alias List If you or somebody set up connections via IP address, you deserve to have to go to each app and fix it by hand.  That is the only way to fix that particular foul-up. If have to deal with Named Instances either as a source or a target, then it gets more complicated.  The standard fix is to use the SQL Server Configuration Manager (or one of its earlier incarnations) to create a SQL client alias to redirect the connection.  This can be a pain installing and configuring the app on multiple client servers.  The good news is that SQL Server Configuration Manager AND all of its earlier versions simply write a few registry keys.  Extracting the keys into a .reg file makes centralized automated deployment a snap. If the client is a 32-bit system, you have to extract the native key.  If it is a 64-bit, you have to extract the native key and the WoW (32 bit on 64 bit host) key. First, pick a development system to create the actual registry key.  If you do this repeatedly, you can simply edit an existing registry file.  Create the entry using the SQL Configuration Manager.  You must use a 64-bit system to create the WoW key.  The following example redirects from a named instance “SQL01\SQLUtiluty” to a default instance on “SQL02”.   Figure 3 – SQL Server Configuration Manager - Native Figure 3 shows the native key listing. Figure 4 – SQL Server Configuration Manager – WoW If you think you don’t need the WoW key because your app is 64 it, think again.  SQL Server Management Server is a 32-bit app, as are most SQL test utilities.  Always create both keys for 64-bit target systems. Now that the keys exist, we can extract them into a .reg file. Fire up REGEDIT and browse to the following location:  HKLM\Software\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\Client\ConnectTo.  You can also search the registry for the string value of one of the server names (old or new). Right click on the “ConnectTo” label and choose “Export”.  Save with an appropriate name and location.  The resulting file should look something like this: Figure 5 – SQL01_Alias.reg Repeat the process with the location: HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\Client\ConnectTo Note that if you have multiple alias entries, ALL of the entries will be exported.  In that case, you can edit the file and remove the extra aliases. You can edit the files together into a single file.  Just leave a blank line between new keys like this: Figure 6 – SQL01_Alias_All.reg Of course if you have an automatic way to deploy, it makes sense to have an automatic way to Un-deploy.  To delete a registry key, simply edit the .reg file and replace the target with a “-“ sign like so. Figure 7 – SQL01_Alias_UNDO.reg Now we have the ability to move any database to any server without having to install or change any applications on any client server.  The whole process should be transparent to the applications, which makes planning and coordinating database moves a far simpler task.
