  • Alien deletes .deb when converting from .rpm

    I'm trying to convert .rpm to .deb using alien. sudo alien -k libtetra-1.0.0-2.i386.rpm Alien says that: libtetra-1.0.0-2.i386.deb generated But when I check the folder - there is just original .rpm and no .deb. Also - I can see that for a split second there is a .deb file in a folder. so it looks like alien create .deb and deletes it right away. I suspect that it's maybe because I run 64 bit os and package is 32? Can somebody explain why alien deletes .deb automatically?   • Using real fonts in HTML 5 & CSS 3 pages

    This is going to be the fifth post in a series of posts regarding HTML 5. You can find the other posts here, here , here and here.In this post I will provide a hands-on example on how to use real fonts in HTML 5 pages with the use of CSS 3.Font issues have been appearing in all websites and caused all sorts of problems for web designers.The real problem with fonts for web developers until now was that they were forced to use only a handful of fonts.CSS 3 allows web designers not to use only web-safe fonts.These fonts are in wide use in most user's operating systems.Some designers (when they wanted to make their site stand out) resorted in various techniques like using images instead of fonts. That solution is not very accessible-friendly and definitely less SEO friendly.CSS (through CSS3's Fonts module) 3 allows web developers to embed fonts directly on a web page.First we need to define the font and then attach the font to elements.Obviously we have various formats for fonts. Some are supported by all modern browsers and some are not.The most common formats are, Embedded OpenType (EOT),TrueType(TTF),OpenType(OTF). I will use the @font-face declaration to define the font used in this page.  Before you download fonts (in any format) make sure you have understood all the licensing issues. Please note that all these real fonts will be downloaded in the client's computer.A great resource on the web (maybe the best) is http://www.typekit.com/.They have an abundance of web fonts for use. Please note that they sell those fonts.Another free (best things in life a free, aren't they?) resource is the http://www.google.com/webfonts website. I have visited the website and downloaded the Aladin webfont.When you download any font you like make sure you read the license first. Aladin webfont is released under the Open Font License (OFL) license. Before I go on with the actual demo I will use the (http://www.caniuse.com) to see the support for web fonts from the latest versions of modern browsers.Please have a look at the picture below. We see that all the latest versions of modern browsers support this feature. In order to be absolutely clear this is not (and could not be) a detailed tutorial on HTML 5. There are other great resources for that.Navigate to the excellent interactive tutorials of W3School.Another excellent resource is HTML 5 Doctor.Two very nice sites that show you what features and specifications are implemented by various browsers and their versions are http://caniuse.com/ and http://html5test.com/. At this times Chrome seems to support most of HTML 5 specifications.Another excellent way to find out if the browser supports HTML 5 and CSS 3 features is to use the Javascript lightweight library Modernizr.In this hands-on example I will be using Expression Web 4.0.This application is not a free application. You can use any HTML editor you like.You can use Visual Studio 2012 Express edition. You can download it here.I create a simple HTML 5 page. It looks like it's perhaps a bug? or I don't know. I simply installed 32-bit version of Ubuntu in VirtualBox and converted package there.   • Ubuntu 12.04 / 12.10 Randomly Freezing - nVidia?

    My Ubuntu install frequently freezes, sometimes showing a black screen (not very common anymore - in my latest installs), some other times the mouse and keyboard just fail to move and respond (not even Ctrl + Alt + F1 works) and some other times I'm able to move the mouse with a huge delay (2-5 seconds) but I'm not able to do/click anything. I have a pretty strong feeling that this problem is related to my graphic card drivers because: after hard reset, I usually get error reports about X.org / jockey it's common for artifacts to appear during loading / shutdown / whenever, for instance: pattern filled with £ during log off ugly-colored squared pattern during boot windows that are partially moved (i.e.: only the top half) Firefox renderings that leave the bottom ~30% of the page black These artifacts appear right before the system freezes. I've installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and after several failed attempts to get my dual monitor setup to work properly I tried installing the new 12.10 version, hoping that this new version would have this problem solved... Unfortunatly, that was not the case, so I reverted to Ubuntu 12.04. I've tried all the drivers in the Additional Drivers application (even the experimental ones), I've also tried the nvidia-current package from the PPA repository ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates as well as the nouveau OSS driver. Nothing (except no driver at all with a 640*480 resolution) at all seems stable. I'm sorry I can't precise which symptom maps to each driver but I've been trying to solve this one on my own without logging what I'm doing, perhaps someone here will be able to point me to a certain-fix solution, if not I'll keep updating this question as I go along. Please let me know if any more info is needed to pinpoint the exact problem. Trying out NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 173). The scrolling, minimizing / maximizing windows takes between 2 and 5 seconds to finalize. Context menus also pop up very slowly and the typing seems delayed by ~1 second. No critical issues so far. Firefox rendering of the Save Edits button is consistently messed up (random black lines in the top). Trying out NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current) [Recommended]. All the delays mentioned above and the buggy rendering of the Save Edits button are gone, but I'm noticing that the whole screen flashes black for a couple of microseconds and while I was writing this test for the first time, the bottom 30% of the screen went black and I couldn't do anything (not even Ctrl + Alt + F1 would work). Had to force a hard reset. Also, the system hanged a little for a couple of seconds with the fade out of the "Restart" menu. Trying out NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (*experimental*beta) (version experimental-304). Same symptoms as before, it crashed once while I was trying to install Chromium and again after a hard reset when I was trying to remove the driver. The bottom of the screen did not went black and I could move my mouse both times. Ctrl + Alt + F1 didn't work. The ugly-colored pattern also showed up during the second boot. Trying out NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (*experimental*beta) (version experimental-307). The system crashed as soon as I clicked something. Had to do a fresh re-install. Trying out Nouveau: Accelerated Open Source driver for nVidia cards. Artifacts still show up during boot but other than that this one seems stable. As soon as I connected my second monitor, the responsiveness dropped a lot, animations and video are somewhat slow. I'm gonna try this solution http://askubuntu.com/a/98871/9018 later on.

    When you clone a root Ubuntu disk in VirtualBox, one thing that gets messed up is the network card definition.  This is because Ubuntu (as it should) uses UDEV IDs for the network device.  When you boot your new disk, the network device ID has changed, so it creates a new eth1 device.  Unfortunately, this conflicts with the VirtualBox network setup.  What to do?   • Redirect Google crawler to different robots.txt via .htaccess

    I have googled for the answer all day and still couldn't find an answer. I have a virtual subdomain www.static.example.com which is a mirror site of www.example.com. It means I have just one root folder for subdomain and domain aswell. I want to redirect crawlers to different robots.txt file - robots_static.txt when they see .static in url in which I will forbid indexing via /disallow command. I want to do this because I have duplicated content in Google search results. Subdomain is showing the exact same content as the main domain. Does anyone know how could I achieve that crawlers sees robots_static.txt instead of robots.txt? Since this should be an open source (GPL) application I thought I would be free to do this. But now I found a page at Qt's website that made me doubtful about it: What are the restrictions with releasing scriptable applications? Unless the scripter has a Qt license, the following restrictions apply: The application itself may not primarily be a script development tool. The Qt API may not be made directly scriptable. Scripts may not alter the main functionality of the application. If the major part of the application is developed with a compiled programming language and only some non-core parts of the application are made extendable/modifiable through Qt Script, the scripter does not need to purchase a Qt or QSA license.     I have been looking at frameworks for writing 2D games in Java - part of a growing desire to rediscover my roots in writing those simple but addictive video games. I have googled and found some possibilities, but it's hard to judge which is best without investing significant time in each. Does anyone out there have any recommendations from experience, preferably with a list of pro's and con's for the framework. NOTE: I am not looking so much for comparisons between frameworks but, rather, feedback on any given framework from actually having used it firsthand, or knowing someone who has. The other possibility I am considering is rolling my own, but would rather not. EDIT: I am targeting Java on the Desktop, and expect capable machines, though not state of the art.     I'm looking for a fast, embeddable key/value store with cursor semantics over key collections (or a simple embeddable DB) that I can use in .NET and mono. Need it to be open-source, would prefer an MIT or Apache style license over a GPL license. Not opposed to a library that needs bindings to be written, as long as binaries are available for both windows and linux. Options considered: SQLite - has bindings and native implementation, but single-threaded and not all that fast Embedded InnoDB - no .NET bindings i can find and it's GPLv2 Berkley DB - no .NET bindings i can find Tokyo Cabinet - no .NET bindings i can find and problematic to build on windows MadCow Memory-mapped data structures - GPLv2 Is there an option better than the above that i'm missing, or bindings for the above i don't know about?

  • ExtAsp or Coolite - ASP.NET wrappers around ExtJs

    Hi, We are a small Microsoft shop looking into ExtJs and like the rapid building of complex and structured UIs that can be achieved with the toolkit. However we have been experimenting with ExtAsp.NET (CodePlex) which is an opensource layer of ASP.NET code which wraps around the ExtJs framework. We have also noticed the Coolite framework which looks good too and does the same thing. We have 2 options, either we purchase the ExtJs license which will be required if we use ExtAsp, or we purchase the Coolite kit which includes the ExtJs license. It looks like Coolite is actually it little cheaper than the ExtJs for some reason?? However, is it a little more risky as regards upgrade path if the Coolite framework becomes unsupported, whereas ExtAsp as an open source solution will have community backing? Just looking to make the right step.

    Windows has an advanced function built-in that lets a user manually initiate a BSOD. It is a debugging tool used to halt the system in the event of (though not necessarily limited to) a hang or freeze. When used, it causes a BSOD with the string MANUALLY_INITIATED_CRASH1 and whimsical code 0xDEADDEAD. The point to this crash is that it is purposely done by the user, so it is not (or at least should not) be an unpredictable event caused by hardware errors or bad drivers (at least not necessarily bad drivers). The question then is whether performing a manual crash properly flushes the disk caches and such so that the drive is in a valid state when rebooting and thus forgoing the need to have chkdsk run.

  • Dolby Digital Live (DDL) on Asus Rampage II Gene (Creative X-Fi Extreme)

    Hi there, I have an Asus Rampage II Gene motherboard which has X-Fi extreme built in. I can get it to work with Windows 7 ok using the Creative drivers, however when I try and install the DDL/DTS add on pack from Creative I get the error message: "There are no supported audio device available. You need to close the application. Click OK to close the application now" I don't understand it because I have the Creative software installed ok and supporting the sound without any problems. In Device manager the audio device comes up as 'High definition audio device' and uses driver: 6.1.7600.16385 from Microsoft. I tried using the Creative drivers which show up as 'soundmax HD audio' however these do not allow any of the Creative products to run properly. Please can anyone offer any help? (These are convenient) -ubuntu live cd has the wi-fi drivers, but also has a lot of stuff I don't need -I'd like a way to save some basic config settings (e.g. wifi SSID and passphrase), so that wifi works upon startup, i.e. without having to re-enter the settings.     I have developed a simple DB-editing app using Xceed's excellent DataGrid for WPF (UX Edition version 3.7), which is now ready for deployment... except that when I run it on a machine other than the development one where it was built, I am getting the runtime exception for invalid licensing. I have included my license key in the App.xaml.cs exactly as specified in the Xceed docs, like so: public partial class App : System.Windows.Application { protected override void OnStartup(StartupEventArgs e) { Xceed.Wpf.DataGrid.Licenser.LicenseKey = "DGF37-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxx"; base.OnStartup(e); } } The correct version of the DataGrid DLLs are being included in the setup and the application's program directory, and there are no other versions on the target machine. Debugging doesn't show me anything useful other than the LicenseException that is thrown when the code tries to use the DataGrid, with the message that reads "Xceed.Wpf.DataGrid.Licenser.LicenseKey property must be set to a valid license key in the code of your application before using this product..." Any idea what's going wrong here?

    Possible Duplicate: Problems installing OS on Dell PowerEdge R410 I am trying to configure a Dell PowerEdge R310 server with Windows Server 2003. I've already configured the two hard drives as RAID1. The HD controller is PERC H700 Integrated and Adapter. Trying to stay with Windows Server 2003 on this fairly new server to save on cost and keep the configuration the same as my old server, which has been running like a champ for five years. Problem: During the OS installation, after everything has been copied from the installation CD, the installation hangs at a window labeled 'Windows Setup' with the message 'Setup is starting Windows' at the bottom. I'm wondering if this is a driver problem and if so, where can I get the drivers for the R310 or where can I get the media for the latest version of Windows Server 2003 which may include the necessary drivers? Will certainly appreciate some help here.

    In my understanding linux can list only those devices which it can understand, i.e. for which the drivers have been installed. I think lspci is the command for that. But how can one figure out if there exists some device in the system for which the drivers are not installed and perhaps some hint about what that device is for and what driver would suffice for it. I would like to know this info so as to be able to recompile my linux kernel to a minimum and would like to avoid a hit and trial approach.

  • Very poor battery life on Lenovo ThinkPad W500 laptop

    I have a new ThinkPad W500 laptop (w/ 9 cell battery) running Windows 7 RTM 64-bit. All drivers* and BIOS are the latest. Battery life appeared poor so I performed several tests under the following conditions: Battery starts with 100% charge Screen on minimum brightness Screen saver running Wifi n enabled and active "Normal" set of programs running including Outlook 2007, FeedDemon, TweetDeck and antivirus Laptop left untouched during tests Under the above conditions, I clocked under 2 hours of battery life across 3 tests (1:49, 1:52, 1:47). If I actually use the computer, we're looking at 1:30. Something is not right... The smoking gun here is that Lenovo hasn't officially released Windows 7 drivers for this laptop. I haven't tried with Vista or XP yet. What are others seeing? Update: For W500 owners w/ the 9 cell battery, what value do you see for "Full charge capacity" when on the Battery tab of the Power Manager utility? I see 81.87 Wh.

    I have a Brother MFC-J615W printer/scanner and I wish to use the scanning feature across a network with a computer running 64-bit Ubuntu 10.04. I have installed the drivers from the Brother website and followed all of the instructions, and printing works fine, but xsane (installed from repositories) produces a popup with the message "no devices available" on startup. I recently had success with a similar approach when installing drivers for a Brother MFC-495CW on 32-bit Unbuntu 9.10, so I am aware of issues such as requiring root access if the driver permissions are not set correctly, but running xsane as root does not solve this problem. Are there any tools available to debug this problem further or does anyone have advice on how to proceed?

    Hi. I have 2 IBM servers Intel Xeon Dual core with 2gb RAM. the problem is that Taskmanager uses one full core when i open it. The same happens when i copy files in the explorer. OS: Windows 2003 Server Things i tried: Installed all updates They has kaspersky anti virus and they previously had Nod32. All drivers installed OK. All unused devices are disabled in the bios. Reinstalled win 2003 SP2. No conflict in drivers Tried opening via remote desktop and the problem continues.
