  • Widget starting a service also starts main activity

    - by Nick
Hi, I have a widget that is supposed to start and stop a service (start it when it's not running, stop it when it is). This is working fine, however, each time the service is started, my app's main activity is also launched, which I don't want. If I remove the MAIN-intent-filter ( <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" /> <category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />) from the app's manifest, it works as I want it to (without launching the main-activity, just the service), but then I obviously don't have a main activity anymore... This is how I start the service (I would assume this is the normal way, and I can't see any reference to what might cause the MAIN intent to fire): Intent svc = new Intent(this, OnOffService.class); startService(svc); Thanks, Nick

  • Writing exceptions in multihreaded windows service to event log

    - by Ziplin
I have a multithreaded windows service that will unpredictably stop running once every 24 hours or so. I am writing to the event log and that's going through just fine, but whenever the service crashes there are no messages in the event log (even that the service stopped, despite having AutoLog=true). Is there a way to have uncaught exceptions written straight to the log, even if they aren't in the original thread?

  • Windows service Null ReferenceException

    - by Patrick
I built a windows service on my local machine. when I install and run it locally it works perfectly fine. When I try to move it to my production machine I get a null reference exception error. I've created an installation package that also works perfectly fine on my machine, but when i run it on the production machine the service still fails. The service references a .dll that in turn has references to 3 other dlls. when i build the project it pulls all of the dlls into the debug folder for the project... I've even installed the service from that folder and it works localy on my machine. I know this has to have something to do with the references, but this is beyond me. Any tips/hints would be appreciated.

  • How to communicate between service controller and a service/daemon?

    - by Sorin Sbarnea
It is easy to display the status of a Windows service or to control it (start/stop) from a GUI application but the question if how about receiving/sending notifications from the service? Like: service telling to the user monitoring it that it needs attention. Please consider that you can have several controllers started at any time in a multi-user environment. Do you know an example(open source) for this kind of communication? Extra points for a platform independent solution :)

  • Password protect web service

Hi! Is it possible to require user name and password for a web service without changing the code for existing web service? Adding a DLL and configuration would be OK, but I rather not change the web service.

  • Calling web service methods using URLs

    - by Alka
Hi. So, i have a central web service that is responsible for managing other services. These services register in the main WS with their URL, leading to their own web service. what i need to do now is call the child web services from the central web service. I've searched google on how to do this but all i could find was this. I would like to register any web service and not create a web reference, as suggested in the solution i've found. How is this done without using a web reference?

  • What is the difference between remote procedure call and web service

    - by xiao
Is there any clear definition about RPC and Web Service? A quick wikipedia search shows: RPC: Remote procedure call (RPC) is an Inter-process communication technology that allows a computer program to cause a subroutine or procedure to execute in another address space (commonly on another computer on a shared network) without the programmer explicitly coding the details for this remote interaction. Web Service: Web services are typically application programming interfaces (API) or web APIs that are accessed via Hypertext Transfer Protocol and executed on a remote system hosting the requested services. Web services tend to fall into one of two camps: Big Web Services[1] and RESTful Web Services. I am not quite clear what the real difference between the two things. It seems that one thing could belongs to RPC and is kind of web service at the same time. Is Web Service a higher level representation of RPC?

  • Different results between Android Geocoder and Google Geocoding web service

    - by user3571822
I am creating an Android application and I need to use the geolocation. I have started by using the Geocoder API from Android (android.location.geocoder) but it causes some issues (timed out waiting for response from server) which seem to be common according to what I have read. To make my application work when this kind of error occurs, I use the Geocoding web service. Now, the application works every time. The problem is that the results returned by the geocoder from API and the geocoder from the web service are not the same. For example the web service returns only 3 addresses with only city name and country whereas the geocoding from the API returns about 8 addresses with the feature name, the thoroughfare, the locality... The question is: is there a way to make the results from the web service exactly the same than the ones from the API? EDIT Here is my MainGeocoder class: public class MainGeocoder { private Geocoder geocoderAPI; private GeocoderRest geocoderRest; public MainGeocoder(Context context) { geocoderAPI = new Geocoder(context); geocoderRest = new GeocoderRest(context); } public List<Address> getFromLocationName(String search, int maxResults) { List<Address> addresses; try { addresses = geocoderAPI.getFromLocationName(search, maxResults); return addresses; } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); try { addresses = geocoderRest.getFromLocationName(search, maxResults); return addresses; } catch (IOException e1) { return null; } catch (LimitExceededException e1) { return null; } } } } It basically tries to get the list of addresses from the API Geocoder. If an IO exception is thrown it gets this list from the web service by using the GeocoderRest class which has been pasted from here: http://stackoverflow.com/a/15117087/3571822

  • Run Java Application as a Service

    - by Jason
I would like to run a Java application as a service. Unfortunately, I am limited in that I can't use something like the Java Service Wrapper (which does appear to be an excellent tool). Is there any way of running an executable JAR, as a service, without relying on external applications? I currently have the service installed, but it fails to start. This is where I am getting stuck and I haven't been able to find anything on Google other than information about the JSW. Thanks.

  • ASP.NET Website or Web service?

    - by fireBand
Hi, I am trying to implement a service to download a image file. The code does nothing but upload a file to the response with each client request. There are no SOAP messages involved but I am planning to implement it as ASP.NET web service. It can also be implement as ASP.NET website but since it has no view (forms, html etc) I planned to implement a web-service. Is this a better approach? Does ASP.NET Website offer better performance that a Web-service? Which one would be better is this situation? Thanks in advance.

  • How do you invoke a web service from another web service using php?

    - by hello nottellingmyname
So, I'm new to web programming, and for my homework I have to write some web services using PHP. Some of the web services have to use other web services, though, and we didn't learn how to do that. My professor said we should look up how to do that online. I think to call a web service using a GET parameter I just need to do file_get_contents(url), but I have no idea how to make a web service call using POST. So, how do I make a web service call from a web service using POST?

  • Consuming a HTTPS Web Service in .Net 3.5 Web Project

    - by Chris M
I'm trying to consume a webservice that ONLY runs on HTTPS but using the "add service" method in VS or using the WSDL to generate a code file leaves me with a web service that states its http... <wsdl:service name="OGServ"> <wsdl:documentation xmlns:wsdl="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/wsdl/">XML Web Services element of OGServ Gateway</wsdl:documentation> <wsdl:port name="OGServSoap" binding="tns:OGServSoap"> <soap:address location="http://ogserv.domain.co.uk/ogwsrv/og.asmx" /> </wsdl:port> <wsdl:port name="OGServSoap12" binding="tns:OGServSoap12"> <soap12:address location="http://ogserv.domain.co.uk/ogwsrv/og.asmx" /> </wsdl:port> </wsdl:service> Would this be the reason that even when I change the app.config (generated by the add-service) endpoint address to https it says it was expecting HTTP? The error: EC.Tests.OGGatewayLayerTest (TestFixtureSetUp): System.ArgumentException : The provided URI scheme 'https' is invalid; expected 'http'. Parameter name: via

  • Online payment service recommendation?

    - by Shadowman
We're currently in the process of looking for an online payment service that will allow us to accept credit cards, etc. However, our business model also involves revenue sharing in a model similar to that of iTunes. That is, content creators will be able to sell content through our site and we take a small percentage of the revenue. Can anyone recommend an online payment service that supports this model? We're also interested in: Accept all major credit cards Being able to do international transactions in the appropriate local currency Recurring transactions (monthly, yearly, etc.) Additionally, if the service provided a Java API for integration or the ability to broker PayPal transactions that would be an added bonus. I know Amazon provides a hosted payment service, but I'd prefer not to require all of our customers to have an Amazon account. That provides an additional barrier to entry that we'd prefer to avoid. I'd appreciate any recommendations you can provide!

  • Windows service - supplying arguments in "path to executable"

    - by Jono
I cannot figure out how to pass (constant) arguments into my Windows service when it is started. I'm using the standard .NET classes like ServiceBase to implement (and ServiceProcessInstaller and ServiceInstaller to install) my service. On the general tab of a Windows Service properties dialog box (once installed), there's a "Path to executable" in which I can see that some of the standard Windows services have command line arguments specified. System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase.OnStart takes string[] args, which I presume would enable these arguments to be accessed from within .NET code. Are there some properties on ServiceProcessInstaller or ServiceInstaller that I can set to allow me to pass startup arguments to my own service, or does anyone know how it's supposed to be done?

  • C# modify a config file for a windows service

    - by Jim Beam
I have a windows service that reads from a config file. I need to modify this config file prior to the application starting. How can I create a GUI that would handle the changes to the config file. I know that a service does not have a GUI per se, but I really just need something to modify some strings in the config file and then start the service.

  • Service Layer are repeating my Repositories

    - by Felipe
Hi all, I'm developing an application using asp.net mvc, NHibernate and DDD. I have a service layer that are used by controllers of my application. Everything are using Unity to inject dependencies (ISessionFactory in repositories, repositories in services and services in controllers) and works fine. But, it's very common I need a method in service to get only object in my repository, like this (in service class): public class ProductService { private readonly IUnitOfWork _uow; private readonly IProductRepository _productRepository; public ProductService(IUnitOfWork unitOfWork, IProductRepository productRepository) { this._uow = unitOfWork; this._productRepository = productRepository; } /* this method should be exists in DDD ??? It's very common */ public Domain.Product Get(long key) { return _productRepository.Get(key); } /* other common method... is correct by DDD ? */ public bool Delete(long key) { usign (var tx = _uow.BeginTransaction()) { try { _productRepository.Delete(key); tx.Commit(); return true; } catch { tx.RollBack(); return false; } } } /* ... others methods ... */ } This code is correct by DDD ? For each Service class I have a Repository, and for each service class need I do a method "Get" for an entity ? Thanks guys Cheers

  • Windows Service Printing Behaviour

    - by Andre
Alright, I was tasked to develop a Windows Service that listens to a directory for files that are dropped in it, read them, delete them and print out a report. I installed the service on my work laptop (Win 7 x86) and a test machine (XP x86) under a User account at first. It would do everything as it should except the print the report. No errors, nothing. Then I made it run under Local System and it produced a "No printers found" exception. Converting the app to a Console Application and running on these machines gave the desired result. OK, so now I was assuming that there are security "stuff" involved. Then I installed the service on a Server 2008 x64 machine (under Local System) and it just worked. Can anybody explain to me why this is happening? Why does the service allow printing from Server OS but not from a Desktop OS or am I missing something very obvious?

  • REST design: what verb and resource name to use for a filtering service

    - by kabaros
I am developing a cleanup/filtering service that has a method that receives a list of objects serialized in xml, and apply some filtering rules to return a subset of those objects. In a REST-ful service, what verb shall I use for such a method? I thought that GET is a natural choice, but I have to put the serialized XML in the body of the request which works but feels incorrect. The other verbs don't seem to fit semantically. What is a good way to define that Service interface? Naming the resource /Cleanup or /Filter seems weird mainly because in the examples I see online, it is always a name rather than a verb being used for resource name. Am I right to feel that REST services are better suited for CRUD operations and you start bending the rules in situations like this service? If yes, am I then making a wrong architectural choice. I've pushed to develop this service in REST-ful style (as opposed to SOAP) for simplicity, but such awkward cases happen a lot and make me feel like I am missing something. Either choosing REST where it shouldn't be used or may be over-thinking some stuff that doesn't really matter? In that case, what really matters?

  • Running Firefox in the Windows service mode

    - by Leonid
I'm writing a server running as a Windows service that by request invokes Firefox to generate a pdf snapshot of a webpage. I know it is a bad idea to run a GUI program in service mode, but the server nature of my program restricts from running it in the user mode. Running a user-level 'proxy' also is not an option, since there might be no interactive user logged-in on the machine with the server running. In my experiments Firefox successfully produced pdf when the service was running under a user account that was already logged-in. Obviously it didn't work in other cases: for Local System and user accounts that weren't logged-in. Under LocalSystem with 'Allow service to interact with desktop' option enabled I could see the Firefox started that reports that it's unable to find a printer. Since it wouldn't be practical to require an opened user session for the pdf server to run, is there any workaround for this except running the whole thing from a virtual machine?

  • windows service cannot access a webservice

    - by Tony
Hi We have two servers, both are containing a local application connecting to local web service, applications and services are identical on both servers. One of the servers work just fine, The other one is just dead, I have impression the the security configuration are different on those servers. What prevents an application X from connecting a web-service, given that another application y on the same server can connect to it. and X is a windows service. What I should check, what is chances? Thanks
