• How do I recover JPEGs with zero bytes?

  I downloaded some wedding photos into my external drive about a month ago. A total of 3 cards were downloaded into 3 different files. The first file lists all of the photos, about 600 images, but they have zero bytes. The other 2 files are fine. I can't recover the compact flash card because I have used it too many times since then. Is there any way to recover the images on my drive?

• Directories' permisions for automounted usb hard drive in Ubuntu 9.10

  Hello. I've noticed that directories' permissions for my automounted USB hard drive formatted in NTFS in Ubuntu 9.10 are 700. This is inconvenient for me. On Ubuntu 8.04 LTS it was 777 everywhere and it was good. Where can I change those default automount permissions for such a drive? Thank you.

• Convert FAT32 to NTFS, risk/time?

  After a quick search I found that through a command prompt I can convert a drive from FAT32 to NTFS without losing data(see here). What I want to ask here is, how safe is this method on a 1.5 TB drive with 500 GB of data? What are the chances of this freezing up(or is there really nothin to worry about) and what is the probable time, a couple of minutes or a whole hour? Sorry if this seems like a stupid question, just want to play on the safe side here ...

• need help in backing up 2 partitions to flash drive(Acronis)

  I'm trying it on virtual box and installed Acronis 2010. The backup was successful but when I checked on the backup which is on my flash drive. Here's my problem: Ive installed firefox before the backup, but the program files folder in the flash drive has no folder called firefox. How do I restore the the 2 partitions using the backup. What I did was to: Go to tools & utilities in Acronis then chose clone disk. Selected the source and destination(flash drive). Then I restart, the backup began. First with the first partition which has xp installed and the 2nd was vista lite. What do I do to restore it: I only got these folders on the root of the flash drive: Documents and settings Program files Windows BOOTSECT.BAK

  Yesterday I installed an SSD in my MacBook and kept my original HDD with a "data doubler" (replaces the DVD-drive with a hard-drive bay). That means I have my OS (and applications) on both my SSD and HDD. Is it possible to get rid of the OS on the HDD? I think that removing everything but the ~/users-folder from the HDD should solve this problem, right? If not, what is the best solution to achieve this?

• Running RAID on an internal storage drive

  I am running Windows 8 on an SSD, and it's all running swimmingly, but I want to put my documents on a "normal" HD running under RAID 1. I have four SATA 3GB/s ports on my motherboard (my Windows 8 SSD drive in on a different 6GB/s controller). All four are used (1 Bluray Optical Drive, 1 Spare HD, and the 2 I wish to turn into a RAID 1 drive. In my BIOS I can only change settings for the entire controller, not just ports. So my question is: If I turn these four ports into a RAID controller, will that negatively affect the non-RAID hardware plugged into it? I.e. Will a HD or Bluray drive be slower/incompatible with being plugged into a non AHCI SATA port? Thanks.

  There might not be an answer to this, but for a home Win7 system, what files/directories must be backed up to recover after a windows crash? I can reinstall software, and I keep data files elsewhere. When I use acronis home backup software to backup my "critical" files it seems to choose the entire partition. Updates are mostly browser cache files and the like. Or, after a crash, should I just reinstall windows. I dread the hours of windows updates that would require. Thanks.

  I have a Windows 7, 64 bit computer with a Blu-ray DVD drive. When I first start the computer, the DVD drive indicates it has music in it, but it is empty. If I put a CD in it, it will not Autoplay. But, if I open the drive and close it again, it will Autoplay and will no longer act as if it has a music CD in it. I've checked the drive with Plextor Utilities and it says it is working OK. I would appreciate any help with this.

• Assembling Software RAID in Live CD for data recovery

  I need help recovering some data that's on my RAID which is on a LVM on my server running Ubuntu. What happened was I deleted the logical volume that controlled my swap space which was on a partition on drives sda2, sdb2, sdc2, and sdd2 in RAID1. This foobared my whole system for one reason or another. Booting leave me with grub rescue and an error saying that it is an unknown filesystem. When I boot to a live cd I can see my RAID arrays and I can even start them up. However, it doesn't appear to mount them anywhere so I can't see the data. I am in the live cd now and I have done sudo apt-get install mdadm lvm2 so it should be mounting them correctly. I just can't see why it wouldn't. Please any help is appreciated here. Here is some output.   I have weird problem with copying files. When I copy file from network drive into C drive nothing happens but when I copy file from network drive to desktop I can copy the file. Also if I copy files from desktop into C it works fine. I have full local admin permission on this PC and the network drive. • Possible HDD malfunction. Need help in diagnosing

  Today when using my PC as I did for almost 4 years I experienced the following: during opening new tab in Opera browser screen froze. Music (AIMP 3) continued to play for about 5 minutes and then stopped too. I tried Ctrl+Alt+Del, but win7 lock screen didn't appear. Caps\Scroll or Num locks didn't switch diodes on keyboard. I rebooted my PC and saw that BIOS suggests me to enter it's settings or load by default. I chose default. It don't see proper boot device (old faitful "insert proper boot" something). After second reboot it said that there is no ExpressGate installed (which i turned off in BIOS years ago). I went into BIOS setting to turn off ExpressGate and see configs: time was not set off, all hard drives present, temp and O.C. settings are nominal (no O.C.) I've inserted my Win7 install disk to try recovery. It did load awfully long (about few minutes) and didn't see current installation. PC was utilized in 24/7 mode for almost all these years. Hardware configuration: ASUS P5Q WS Core 2 Quad Q9300 (2.5GHz no O.C.) MSI geForce GTX 460 4x2 Gb GeIL EVO 2 (AFAIR) Seagate something 750Gb (4 years as system HDD 24/7) WD 1Tb (for random stuff, 5 y.o.) Hitachi 500Gb (for even more random stuff, 6 y.o.) NEC DVDRW (ALL DISKS ARE SATA) Cooler Master Silent Pro 700W Software: Windows 7 AND Kubuntu on the same drive with GRUB loader. Sorry I can't remember HDDs and can't see them right now, but I think their models aren't relevant anyway. My idea is that due to some system error or hard drive glitch i've wrecked my primary HDD's MBR. Nevertheless I don't exclude the possibility of other failure. May it's be that motherboard or it's SATA controller? Doubt it, because all drives are seen in BIOS and I could load from DVD. Maybe GRUB got bugged somehow, although I don't see how it's possible from Windows. But I did install KUbuntu from Windows (i wasn't myself then), maybe GRUB did write itself in some windows partition and got rewriteen in process? Right now I am at work with my flash drive with me and I need some advice how to fix MBR or to hear if it's not MBR. I'm going to buy new HDD (Hitachi 7k2000) because I think that my current HDD is compromised and it's unsafe to use it as system drive, especially 24/7.

• Unable to mount iso as dvd drive in VMware Fusion 6

  I have a newer iMac without an optical drive and some DVDs that I needed to run software off of. This software will have you juggle discs to read data off of them, and the data can't simply be copied to the machine's drive. I used a windows machine to make ISOs of these DVDs. And the first disc, the installer, it will mount in VMware and let you install the software. It then asks for the other discs, and these won't mount as ISOs. If I mount them as drive images, they'll show up on the iMac's and I have access to all the files. But if I try to mount them as the dvd drive through Fusion, nothing happens. For that matter, I'm unable to attempt it a second time, as Fusion believes that the there is already an iso mounted as the dvd, while nothing has happened as far as the guest OS is concerned. drutil eject will allow me to eject the ghost/non-existent dvd, at which point I can make a second (equally futile) attempt. Does anyone have an explanation for this behavior? How can the ISO be valid enough to mount as a drive image, but not valid enough for Fusion to mount it as if it were a dvd?

• Restore wubi install after changing master drive

  Recently I got a 160G drive to install other Unix distributions and learn to use them for the sake of my current job. However I've got only 2 drive connectors free (on the primary channel). Therefore I've decided to remove an 80G hard drive which has the MBR and the main Windows bootloader. My problem in particular is that I've got another 250G drive which has a Wubi installation of Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx), which I want to preserve on the bootloader that's going to be running for all the other OSes (potentially Grub). How would I do that? Since Wubi is actually sort of windows reliant, as far as I've learned so far.

• Windows 7 Mapped Network Drive Multiplying to Create Duplicates all the way to Z:

  A strange issue came in today from some users. At least two Windows 7 x64 boxes that have duplicate mappings of a network drive. The drive is not mapped with a log in script, but done manual through "Map Network Drive". Everything has been fine for months, but all of the sudden, Explorer looks like this: Files (\\fileServerPath) (S:) Files (\\fileServerPath) (T:) Files (\\fileServerPath) (U:) Files (\\fileServerPath) (V:) Files (\\otherServerPath) (W:) Files (\\fileServerPath) (X:) Files (\\fileServerPath) (Y:) Files (\\fileServerPath) (Z:) There are some other networks drives mixed in there that did not duplicate. The drive is normally mapped to S:\, but it decided to make its way to Z:. What is going on here?   I have a drive with data on it. I dont want to use RAID, instead I want to do hourly backups to a second drive. I basically want to mirror the data drive and resync every hour. It is inefficient to re-move the data each time so really I only want to move across what changes. I.e if I add a new file to the data drive only that file will be moved across. • Clean Install Windows on a Acer Aspire Laptop with a Hybrid Drive

  I'd like to do a clean install of Windows 8 on my Acer Aspire laptop (Aspire M5-481PT) with a hybrid drive. Physically, there seem to be two hard drives (an HDD and an SSD). So when I try to clean install Windows, I am asked to pick a drive. The HDD has five partitions (some seem to be recovery related), and the SSD has two partitions. Which partitions should I delete (if any), and onto which drive should I install Windows 8? And then how can I instruct Windows 8 to use the HDD-SSD combination as a hybrid drive? Edit: Currently, the operating system seems to be installed (from the factory) on the HDD. The SSD is invisible in File Explorer. It is only visible in disk utilities. I'm betting I need to install Windows to the HDD, and then point Windows to use the SSD for the hybrid relationship. Also, the SSD is about 20 GB. The HDD is about 450 GB.

• USB Drive that simultaneously connects to more than one computer

  Background: I have a portable USB drive that I use to make sure I have access to common files whenever at home, work, travel etc for cases when I may not have Internet/Network access of any kind. There are some cases when I have to work simultaneously on a laptop and a desktop computer, and for those cases I usually have to unplug this USB hard drive and move it between the two. Question: dual-computer USB drive? Is there a USB-based solution that would enable me to use this portable drive between two computers simultaneously? If there is not a USB-based solution, does anyone have alternative suggestions, consistent with the underlying rationale? Rationale: Sometimes I have to work on a desktop computer with locked-down networking capabilities (such as at the local photocopy shop) and it can be difficult to get a network configuration that allows dual-computer access without breaking things, or accidentally making my USB drive visible to the entire network. Basically what I need is a very simply LAN that is guaranteed to work regardless of the rules or constraints set by the network administrator for wherever I happen to be at the time.   I wanted to restrict access of other people in a certain drive of my computer. What I did was go to the Security Tab (under Drive Properties) and remove the All Users entry. My account is an administrator account. I left only Systems and Administrator on the list. • A script so that you don't forget your usb drive on a public computer

  So I have a problem because I'm an idiot. I seem to always leave my usb drives in public computers at school and the like. I unmount them and log off leaving them still in the pc, and of course I then lose my information and my drive which can be costly. Is there a small script somewhere that I can install to my drive that prompts me to take out my usb stick when I log off of a computer? Since this is mostly for use with public computers I can't put anything on my drive that will later need some sort of admin permissions. I guess if all else fails I'll probably put my drive on a lanyard and keep it around my wrist. lol. Does anyone else have this problem?

• Ubuntu 9.10 won't reboot after replacing a failed drive

  Hello Serverfault community. I hope someone can shed light on a peculiar problem I am having with an Ubuntu 9.10 server install. I am not a Linux expert but have the responsibility of fixing the box if something goes wrong. DOH! I have Ubuntu 9.10 server installed on on a desktop platform: Compaq Presario SR5027CL. There are two 1TB SATA drives configured in a RAID 1 array; I use the box as an email backup server for a small group of users. Last week one of the drives failed and was replaced with a new drive of the same type. The problem I have been having is getting the box to reboot after a restart or a shutdown halt. The OS and the RAID 1 array are on the same drives that make up the RAID 1 array. The replacement drive (sda) was added to the box and the partitions were created to match the existing good drive (sdb). The array is made up of sda1 and sdb1. I found an interesting point while checking the BIOS settings: there is a "HDD Boot Group Priority" section, and the new drive was selected as the "1. 3rd master"; the server wouldn't boot configured like that, but when I set the old drive to be "1. 4th master", the box will reboot. I'm checking some more things, but I would certainly appreciate any useful information. Thanks in advance.

• New Kingson SSD drive fails after 1 week

  I upgraded the hard disk in my notebook to a 128GB Kingston SSD V100. Everything worked fine for about a week then out of the blue the notebook would not boot up any more. A black dos-like screen was shown with the options to try and boot normally or attempt to repair windows. Neither option would do anything. When I removed the drive and tested it in an external usb case no other computers are able to access the drive either. Is there anything I can try to fix it myself? The drive is partitioned into three drives and when it's connected through an external usb case to another computer I can see the partitions, just can't access anything on them. Does this mean the drive might be recoverable?
