• Customize Colors for Sprites in Web Game

  So I'm working on an html5/javascript/css3-based game. Without going into too much detail, I'm thinking of having the characters be simple 8 or 16-bit style sprites, but I'd like to allow the user to customize the colors of their character. Here are some examples of what I'm talking about : http://jsfiddle.net/simurai/CGmCe/light/ http://www.splashnology.com/article/sprite-animation-in-css3/1485/ So the problem I'm having is two-fold: 1) Should I use something other than a sprite map for my characters, like actually draw them as shapes and animate them in a canvas element? That way I can fill the sprite with colors of the user's choosing? My fear there is that this would be inefficient as far as resources and also waste a lot of time hand-drawing everything, but could allow other customization (like height/width etc). 2) Are there potentially some web apis that would allow you to alter colors inside of a sprite? I suppose I could do it on the back-end with GD, but I'm trying to make it entirely in-browser (including local storage). It's not a definitive one-answer only question, but I'm hoping someone can suggest something they've seen that approaches the same problem from another angle or gives us a way to customize the sprites or manipulate them in some manner. Or avoid them altogether, and use a different method.

• dead keys not working in java app

  The Arduino IDE is based on a java application called processing. While typing text into processing, it refuses to accept any of the characters under dead keys like " ' ^. As a work around I: Open another window (usually my browser or mail client); I type the character I need; Select and copy the character onto my clip board; Copy the character into processing. What do I have to do to make processing accept characters under dead keys? Disabling dead keys is not an option.

• New Book - Oracle ADF Enterprise Application Development Made Simple

  It's nice to see another ADF book out there, this one from Sten Vesteli titled "Oracle ADF Enterprise Application Development Made Simple" comes from Packet Publishing Unlike other ADF books out there, this one doesn't aim to teach you Oracle ADF, but rather focuses on the right way to structure and manage a project that leverages ADF. This is a welcomed addition to the bookshelf for people who are looking into ADF based development. One thing I find is that some organization just start developing an ADF application without first doing much planning, something that is understandable given that it is very easy to start building a prototype with ADF and then just grow it into a full blown application. However, as the book points out, doing a bit of planning before you delve into the actual project development can save you a lot of time in the future. For example it is much better to have the right breakdown and structure of your project to allow you to do efficient team development right out of the gate, then to find out 1 year down the road that you are dealing with one monolithic size project which is hard to manage. The book touches on such topics as project organization (workspaces, projects, packages), planning your infrastructure (templates, framework classes), coding standards, team structure, etc. It also covers various aspects of application lifecycle management such as versioning, build, testing, deployment and managing requirements and tasks and how all of those are done when using JDeveloper and Oracle ADF. It's nice to see that the book covers working with Oracle Team Productivity Center - a solution that might not be getting the exposure it deserves. The book also has some chapters about security, internalization and customization of applications both with MDS and with ADF Faces skins (and it even covers the brand new skin editor). Overall I think this is definitely a book you should read if you are about to start your way on a new enterprise scale ADF application. Taking into account the topics that the book discusses before you start your work will save you time and effort down the road. By the way, don't forget that as an OTN member you can get discount on this and other books.

  Recently I started programming in Groovy for a integration testing framework, for a Java project. I use Intellij IDEA with Groovy plug-in and I am surprised to see as a warning for all the methods that are non-static and do not depend on any instance fields. In Java, however, this is not an issue (at least from IDE's point of view). Should all methods that do not depend onto any instance fields be transformed into static functions? If true, is this specific to Groovy or it is available for OOP in general? And why?

For the record, my app is very strongly tied to UIKit and Foundation, so the word "porting" may be a misnomer; I'll actually be completely rewriting it for Android. No code reuse.   According to the FAQ's I am not sure if my question is a ok to ask or will be closed or should I post it in the meta or even I would blame some one for downvoting it. However it is one that has been bugging me since the trouble strated. Let me explain. I have this Web Site. On the site you can see that I had to actually remove the above from here, here, and here while left it here, here, here and here. This is so because the the web site "refuses" to load at all with the pages that have the code (i.e., from this region.) If I use Firefox Stealthy Plugin and open the site in Firefox, It works like a charm without any problems. But with Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Opera Web browser, the site does not load/open at all because of the Google translate. (I know this because If I remove the Google Translate Code, the site works/loads fine) It was one thing to program for "cross browser compatability" and alltogether another to program for "cross region compatability". What can I do to make sure that the site works from anywhere? Do I completely remove the Google Translate code and just have to do without the additional functionality or Do I look for alternatives like this or according to this?

• Curiosity on any Smartphones that Run on Android 2.3.3 with Different Screen Reoslution

  I have a question regarding about any smartphones that run only in Android 2.3.3. Is the size of screen or the screen resolution is always HVGA or does it have capable of running this OS (Android 2.3.3) on big screen size (4" to 5") at about 720x1280? I'm thinking of the game's compatibility depending on the version of the Android OS and the screen resolution, which affects the change of coordinates especially for assigning touch buttons and drag-n-drop at exact location, before I'm gonna decide to make one. My program works on the Android 4 ICS and Jellybean, however, will that work on Android 2.3.3 in spite of precise touch coordinate or just dependent on the screen resolution (regardless how large it is) as the X and Y coordinate? And take note, I'm using Eclipse IDE for Java developers.

  I am tired of hearing people recommend that you should use only one thread per process, while many programs use up to 100 per process! take for example some common programs vb.net ide uses about 25 thread when not debugging System uses about 100 chrome uses about 19 Avira uses more than about 50 Any time I post a thread related question, I am reminded almost every time that I should not use more that one thread per process, and all the programs I mention above are ruining on my system with a single processor. Also known as SaaS (Software as a Service). The advantages of a cloud solution are undeniable. Availability, (SharePoint line offers a 99.9% uptime SLA) Reliability. Cost. Due to economies of scale, and no need to hire specialized dedicated staff. Scalability. Security. Flexibility – grow or shrink as you need to. If you are seriously considering SharePoint 2010 in the cloud, there are some things you need to know about SharePoint online. What will work - OOTB Customization, collaboration features etc. will work SharePoint Designer 2010 is supported, so no code workflows will work Visual Studio sandbox solutions, client object model will work. What won’t work - SharePoint 2010 online cloud environment supports only sandbox solutions. BCS, business connectivity services is not supported in SharePoint online. What you can do however is to host your services in Azure, and call them using Silverlight. Custom timer jobs will not work. Long story short, get used to Sandbox solutions – and the new way of programming. Sandbox solutions are pretty damn good. Most of the complaints I have heard around sandbox solutions being too restrictive, are uninformed mechanisms of doing things mired in the ways of 2002. .. or you could just live in 2002 too. • Customize side panel in Internet Explorer 9/Windows 7

  I use Internet Explorer 9 with all the horizontal toolbars except the tab bar invisible to maximize vertical space. I have plenty of room at the side so I have the Favorites/Feeds/History panel open, usually on Favorites to replace the Favorites bar. I'd like to customize the shortcuts in this panel to display as large icons, similar to when you set the display in Windows Explorer to Large Icons and, long shot... change the backround color. The side panel does appear to be just a Windows Explorer window but it seems immune to any kind of tampering or customization, mainly because right clicking is disabled on the empty space. Changing browsers is not going to happen but can someone help out here?

  Good day everyone! I am currently writting a software that makes easy to change default cursor theme with a few clicks. At this point it works well, but applications like Firefox or Lazarus IDE remain with the DMZ-White cursor, everything else is ok. I noticed that when I change the default cursor using my software, and later change the 'personalized' cursor theme using Ubuntu Tweak, it does the job, and the new theme is now applied everywhere. So, what file is need to modify in order to change 'personal' cursor theme? If my software can do this, that would be great! I found that 'gtkrc' is a file where settings of GTK+ are stored. I searched in my home folder but I can't find yet. Can you help me with this, noble people of Ubuntu? :)

  I am trying to recover data from an old Linux that was installed in a computer on an ATA hard drive. I found a ScanLogic USB-IDE, an ATA adapter to USB 1.0 similar to the one in the picture: and after switching it on, I plugged it into a laptop with Ubuntu 12.04. I am used to the drives being automatically mounted, but this one doesn't show up in /media. • Atheros AR2413 wireless not working after shutdown

  I am using a Ubuntu 11.04 on an Acer aspire 3680 laptop and my wifi is not working. I followed the below commands to install the madwifi driver: sudo su apt-get install subversion cd /usr/src svn checkout http://madwifi-project.org/svn/madwifi/trunk madwifi tar cfvz madwifi.tgz cd madwifi make && make install echo "blacklist ath5k" /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf echo "ath_pci" /etc/modules modprobe ath_pci sudo reboot After installation I am facing the same problem. My wifi wont work after I shutdown. Infact it didn't work after suspend but I rectified that problem by the following commands: Command 1: sudo rmmod -f ath_pci sudo rfkill unblock all sudo modprobe ath_pci along with the command SUSPEND_MODULES=ath_pci added to the /etc/pm/config.d/madwifi directory. So if I suspend and then on my laptop the wifi loads well and doesn't create a problem. But if I shutdown my laptop the wifi never loads again and eachtime I have to run a Ubuntu 9.04 live CD to load it. I did try adding the Command 1 to the /etc/rc.local directory but still it doesn't work. So my question is: What should I do in order to make my wireless work without having to run a live CD of ubuntu 9.04 everytime after shutdown? Thanks. This is so because the the web site "refuses" to load at all with the pages that have the code (i.e., from this region.) If I use Firefox Stealthy Plugin and open the site in Firefox, It works like a charm without any problems. But with Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Opera Web browser, the site does not load/open at all because of the Google translate. (I know this because If I remove the Google Translate Code, the site works/loads fine) It was one thing to program for "cross browser compatability" and alltogether another to program for "cross region compatability". What can I do to make sure that the site works from anywhere? Do I completely remove the Google Translate code and just have to do without the additional functionality or Do I look for alternatives like this or according to this?

• Exporting .jar files with Jarsplice

  Help! I'm Using Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion and Using Eclipse. I'm using the library called Slick and Lwjgl. When i first exported it, it has a .jar file. I followed some You Tube Tutorials (Different, they don't have slick) It worked for them. I don't know why it dosen't work for me. Should i put Slick-util too? I didn't even use lwjgl btw. Please help!!! Jars I used(Libraries) Slick LWJGL(I didn't use it) Tutorials I followed TheCodingUniverse(Exporting) TheNewBoston(The Code and Set-up) Programs I used Eclipse IDE Java Jarsplice No warnings found or errors. It is perfect! But Nothing shows up in the screen everytime I pressed the jar(After Jarsplice) Help!!!

• Does Ubuntu support SATA drives in AHCI mode?

  I have a current installation of Ubuntu 13. Will it boot if I switch my SATA controller to AHCI in BIOS? (I installed Ubuntu in IDE mode) I have to wait until I fix my GRUB (Windows ate it), so I thought I'd take a poll here first in case there are any precautions. I ask, because it was a royal PITA to do it in Windows. Will I need to reinstall Ubuntu to enable this? I don't mind doing that since it was just installed and I having nothing on it yet, and I kinda botched the install anyway.

• How can I optimize my development machines files/dirs?

  Like any programmer, I've got a lot of stuff on my machine. Some of that stuff is projects of my own, some are projects I'm working on for my employer, others are open-source tools and projects, etc. Currently, I have my files organized as follows: /Code --/development (things I'm sort of hacking on plus maybe libraries used in other projects) --/scala (organized by language...why? I don't know!) --/android --/ruby --/employer_name -- /mobile --/android --/ios --/open-source (basically my forks that I'm pushing commits back upstream from) --/some-awesome-oss-project --/another-awesome-one --/tools random IDE settings sprinkled in here plus some other apps As you can see, things are kind of a mess here. How can I keep things organized in some sort of coherent fashion?

• Licensing a project

  Ok can someone clarify something for me ? Let's say I want to build a website and add publicity to it so I can make money out of my work. I would use Html5 for the interface and C# with Asp.net for the background programming. I would use Visual Studio as my IDE and SQL server as a database. This is just an example on the top of my head but I woudn't know where to start for the licenses. Do I need one : For VisualStudio and SQLServer only ? For VisualStudio, SQLServer and pay some kind of rights for Asp.net ? The whole package.. Both VisualStudio, SQlServer plus rights for Asp.net AND C# ? I know this question is a little vague but I really don't know where to start and the opinion of someone with experience int this might give me just the help I need to get started.

• Java Developers: Is Ant still in the "main stream" for builds? Do we push new developers to learn it?

  We have been slowly replacing batch command files (windows .bat) which were simply jarring up the classes compiled in the developers IDE, with more comprehensive Ant builds (i.e. get from CVS, clean compile, jar, archive, email, etc.) I've spent a lot of time learning (and debugging issues) with Ant, so I'm most comfortable using it for these tasks. But I wonder if Ant is still in as wide usage as it was when I first started learning, or whether "the world has moved on" to something newer (and maybe slicker). (I've started to see more Maven build stuff distributed, which I've never used, for example.) The practical import of this question, is whether I push new developers to learn Ant, or whether they should be learning something else for builds? I'm never too on top of the trends, so it would be great to hear from other Java developers what they think is the best build tool, and what they think new developers should be learning.

My CV have 3 pages but for this company is not enough detailed. ;) What structure have your CV in programming languages, frameworks, technology, third-party libraries? Any sample of good structured CV. (as pdf file) Of course I had used the google but I found a dozen same old things. I would like have someting orignal and fresh. Any inspiration? I do not know what to write for example C #. C# OOP, delagate, event, generic, LINQ other WPF control, data template, converter, style, triggers..? Prims, Caliburn, MEF ? Also which skills from OS, IDE, util is suitably to have in CV. I would’t have a 10 pages CV or have bad and immense structure of CV. Sory for my english

  Plenty of sentiment exists that measuring commits is inappropriate. Has any study been done that tries to draw in more sources than commits - such as: browsing patterns IDE work (pre-commit) idle time multitasking I can't think of an easy way to do these measures, but I wonder if any study has been done. On a personal note, I do believe that reflection on one's own 'metrics' could be valuable regardless of (or in the absence of) using these for performance eval. I.E. an un-biased way to reflect on your habits. But this is a discussion matter beyond Q&A.
