• Obtaining clear cable signal with Hauppage 1191-950Q TV Tuner

  I bought a Hauppauge 1191 WinTV-HVR-950Q TV Tuner a while back, and I am attempting to use it to watch TV in Windows Media Center. I do not have cable TV, however I used to have Comcast. Through experimentation, I found that connecting my coax cable into my TV, I was able to view television (i.e. 2-1 = CBS, 5-1 = NBC, etc). This also works on a second TV I use in another room. When I connect the coax cable to my TV Tuner stick and scan TV channels in Windows Media Center, it only picks up 1 station (like 81 or something). My only conclusion on this is somehow the hardware in the television is decrypting a signal that the TV tuner stick is not able to. Is that possible? Should I try a different TV tuner? Any assistance would be appreciated. I also bought a Terk HD Indoor Antenna but my reception has been flakey, so I would rather go this route if possible.

• System randomly freezes yet mouse still moves, SSD out of reallocatable sectors, should I replace it?

  This problem has lasted for the past 48 hours. The first time it happened, a program I was running stopped responding, so I tried to end it from task manager. The processes at first were listed fine until hovered upon. Eventually, despite the mouse still being able to move, after a few persisting clicks the mouse finally stopped moving. The screen went blank shortly thereafter. The second time it occurred, items on the screen stopped responding - hovering over the taskbar or such wouldn't elicit a response. Sound would still play however. Eventually, the mouse became unresponsive and the system restarted itself. I suspect that it may be a problem of my SSD drive. After looking through some Google search results, I downloaded HDTunePro to determine if there's a problem with the drive. Results returned a problem of reallocated sector count. An error scan also revealed 48 bad sectors. Also, an attempt to backup the contents of the most important areas of the drive returned a few explorer "Error: cannot read source from disk" errors. Should I ditch the drive and use another drive or is there anything that can be done to repair the drive?   I've got access to my "own" FreeBSD jail. The jail has only basic, unconfigured system, but I have full access to FreeBSD ports, and (jail)root too. Now I need to setup my jail as IMAP/MTA. The question: What packages are EASIEST for config and later administration, (the simplest possible setup, with the minimum needed configuration) when: i haven't any preferences (don't know any yet) my (one) domain is managed by ISP, so don't need DNS need only IMAP for few users (up to 20 mailboxes) need secure transport layer (IMAPS/993) password auth, no LDAP, no kerberos, nor databases, nothing like fancy things... need easy-setup easy-admin MTA, with simplest possible password SMTP auth, (again no LDAP, nor DB), secure transport layer but would be nice have virus-scan and some anti-spam protection So, what ports I should install for MTA and IMAP? MTA (Sendmail, Postfix, Exim)? antivirus (ClamAV) antispam??? IMAP(S), (Dovecot, Courier) when the main criteria are: easy setup, and easy administration. When I googled I found only complicated setups for thousands of users with LDAP, databases and so on - too big-caliber for my small (easy?) needs. Any pointer to an easy howto is very welcomed.

• Why does my simple Raid 1 backup storage perform really slow sometimes?

  I bought 2x Samsung F3 EcoGreen 2TB hard disks to make a backup storage. I put them in Raid 1 (mirror) mode. Made a single partition and formatted it to NTFS, running Windows 7. For some reason, accessing the drive's contents (simply by navigating folders) is sometimes really slow. Like opening D:/photos/ can sometimes take several seconds before it starts showing any of the folder's contents. Same applies for other folders. What could be causing this and what could I do to improve the performance? I remember that there was an option somewhere inside Windows to choose fast access but less reliable persistence operations (read/write). It was a tick inside some dialog. At the time, it felt like a good idea to take the tick away from the option and get more reliable persistence but slower access, but now I'm regretting. I'm unable to find this dialog.. I've looked hard. I don't know, if it would make any difference. Oh, and I've ran scan disk and defrag on the drive. No errors and speed isn't improved.

• INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE after installing Linux on same drive

  History: My PC was configured with two drives: an 80G on IDE 0 Primary that was running Win2K, and a 320G on IDE 0 Secondary that was running Linux (Ubuntu). I decided to pull the 80Gb drive out of the system, so dd'd the entire 80 G drive (/dev/sda) onto the 320 (/dev/sdb) -- this included the MBR and partition table. Then I pulled the drive, plugged the 320 into IDE 0 Primary, and rebooted. The Windows partition worked at this point. Then I installed Ubuntu into the remaining space on the 320. It works. However, when I try to boot into Windows, I get a BSOD with the following message: *** STOP: 0x0000007B (0x89055030,0xC000014F,0x00000000,0x00000000) INACCESSILE_BOOT_DEVICE Before the BSOD I see the Win2K splash screen, and it claims to be "starting windows" for a couple of seconds -- so it appears that the first stage boot loader is working as expected. Ditto when I try booting in Safe Mode. After reading the Microsoft KB article, I booted into the recovery console and tried running chkdsk /r. It refused to run, claiming that the drive was corrupted (sorry, didn't write down the exact error message). However, I can mount the drive from Linux, and access all files. And for what it's worth, I can scan the drive using the Linux "Disk Utility" (this is Ubuntu, the menus don't show real program names), it claims the drive to be clean. • VLC Crash when playing MKV files in Windows 7

  I'm not sure if the mkv file is corrupted, but when it is opened with VLC player, VLC loads up and displays nothing. Can't even close VLC after that. And also, VLC is running with 50% of the CPU. I have to use End Process to kill it. How do I know if the file is corrupted? It is not uncommon to encounter Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) errors while encrypting a hard disk. If PGP WDE encounters a hard drive with bad sectors, PGP WDE will, by default, pause the encryption process. This pause allows you to remedy the problem before continuing with the encryption process, thus avoiding potential disk corruption and lost data. To avoid disruption during encryption, PGP Corporation recommends that you start with a healthy disk by correcting any disk errors prior to encrypting. and As a best practice, before you attempt to use PGP WDE, use a third-party scan disk utility that has the ability to perform a low-level integrity check and repair any inconsistencies with the drive that could lead to CRC errors. • Window too big to fit the screen!

  I'm using Windows 7 on a 8.9' monitor with 1280x768 screen resolution. Using the might of arithmetics, I'm able to determine that my dpi (actually ppi) should be 167. Win7 is really helpful in that it doesn't have to restart to apply new dpi settings, unlike its predecessors (though I'd rather it applies straight away). The problem with small monitors in Windows is that when you come across windows too big to fit the screen, you can't move the title bar far above it. In X window managers I used in the past, you could alt-drag the window to anywhere you want, but in Windows, even if you alt-space and select move, it will automatically push the window back until the title bar is visible. I'm looking for a solution that either: allows me to move window freely without regard to titlebar visibility, or attach a scrollbar to existing window, or EDIT: create virtual desktops that allow me to span windows over 2 desktops, or EDIT 2: allow me to set larger virtual resolution, then pan & scan. EDIT 3: I found some progs that might do some of the above: 1) AltDrag allows me to drag, resize using alt and left/right mouse button. Neat! Best solution so far. 2) GiMeSpace Desktop Extender is supposed to allow me to scroll desktop. Didn't work. The other new version, GiMeSpace Ultimate Taskbar worked, but it destroys my Superbar, replacing it with its map.

• Unusual HEAD requests to nonsense URLs from Chrome

  I have noticed unusual traffic coming from my workstation the last couple of days. I am seeing HEAD requests sent to random character URLs, usually three or four within a second, and they appear to be coming from my Chrome browser. The requests repeat only three or four times a day, but I have not identified a particular pattern. The URL characters are different for each request. No such host is known I have been unable to find any information through Google searches related to this issue. I do not remember seeing this kind of traffic before late last week, but it may be that I just missed it before. The one modification I made to my system last week that was unusual was adding the Delicious add-in/extension to both IE and Chrome. I have since removed both of these, but am still seeing the traffic. I have run virus scan (Trend Micro) and HiJackThis looking for malicious code, but I have not found any. I would appreciate any help tracking down the source of the requests, so I can determine if they are benign, or indicative of a bigger problem. Thanks.

• FTP Server upload and filesystem questions

  I'm a photographer who mainly does event photography. A while ago I bought myself a Nikon WT-4 wireless transmitter, a small device which connects via USB to my Nikon D700 DSLR, and then establishes a WiFi connection to an existing WLAN. It can then upload any pictures I take via FTP to an FTP server somewhere in the network. On my laptop I then have a piece of software which will check a given folder on the disk regularly, this software is smart enough to look at the modified file timestamp, if this timestamp is less than 10 seconds ago, it will not attempt to import the folder and skip the file in this iteration of the import scan. The problem I've discovered seems to be inherent to the FTP protocol, as I have the same problem with Windows 7 built in IIS server, as I do with FileZilla FTP server. When the transmitter starts to upload a file, the FTP server will create a small 300-500 KB file with the correct filename on the disk, but then do nothing with the file until it has completely received the file via FTP. So it seems to create this small dummy file, and then buffer the remainder of the FTP upload until it's finished, and then dump the rest of the file into the dummy file making it the correct size. Problem is, these uploads take about 15-30 seconds depending on reception, but since the folder watch tool will already try to import any file older than 10 seconds, it will always try to import the small dummy files which obviously fails as they're not copmlete yet. Is there any way to 'disable' this behaviour? Ideally I would like my file only to show up once it's been completely uploaded. Or perhaps someone knows another FTP server application (it has to run on win7) which does not show this behaviour?

• Unable to connect to SQL Database (can the password be reset)

  I have recently joined a company which has an SQL 2005 Server running a few databases. The server looks like no one has touched it in a couple of years and has this week it ran out of disk space. After a quick hard drive scan it looks like some of the databases have become a little bloated and particularly the Sharepoint_config~*~_log and WSS_Content_log.ldf have grown to about 15GB. I have been able to log into a couple of the other databases and use the shrinkfile command to free up disk space but for some reason I am unable to log into the sharepoint and Microsoft#SSEE databases (which gives me the "cannot connect to Sharepoint, a network related or instance specific error occurred..." when I try and connect) I can see that the database is running via the SQL surface configuration and I have made sure that the remote connection settings allow me to connect locally but I am still unable to log in either with windows authentication or locally. Is there any way to reset or recover the database login details so I can get in? ( I have tried logging in with all the administrative passwords I can find and after tracking down the company who installed it in the first place I found out that they have no idea what the password could have been)

• Lost user account for Windows Vista

  Hello, I'm trying to help a friend who's lost her user account in Vista. I know there's supposed to be a way you can boot the computer from the vista installation disc and create an admin account you can later login with, but her installation disc is in Australia and her laptop in London. Is there any other way to get in? Or would it be better to try and access just the harddrive? She's mainly concerned with getting all her data off it. As for how she lost the account, I'll let her explain in her words. :) My computer basically got some virus and now is up sh*t creek. it told me i had this cryptic thingy majiggy was missing and then this fake virus told me i needed to scan my computer. SO i tried to do malware thing but it kept shutting my computer down. ANYWAY...now its it will only open up with 'launch startup repair' and has got rid of my settings for logging in and wants me to be 'other user' which i have no password or username for'...so basically im stuffed. • Am I safe on Windows if I continue like this?

  Of all the available tons of anti-malware software for Windows all over the internet, I've never used any paid solution(I am a student, I have no money). Since the last 10 years, my computers running Windows have never been hacked/compromised or infected so badly that I had to reformat them(of course I did reformat them for other reasons). The only program I have for security is Avast Home Edition, which is free, installed on my computers. It has never caused any problems; always detected malware, updated automatically, has an option to sandbox programs and everything else I need. Even if I got infected, I just did a boot-time scan with it, downloaded and ran Malwarebytes, scanned Autoruns logs, checked running processes with Process Explorer and did some other things and made sure I cleaned my computer. I am quite experienced and I've always taken basic precautions like not clicking suspicious executables, not going to sites which are suspicious according to WOT, and all that blah. But recently I've been doing more and more online transactions and since its 2012 now, I'm doubtful whether I need more security or not. Have I been just lucky, or do my computing habits obviate the need to use any more(or paid) security software?

• Windows takes a very long time to shut down even in safe mode

  On Windows 7 the computer freezes for about 5 minutes once it gets to "Shutting down...". I can't remember when it started happening. I just lived with it for a while. The first thing I tried was a full scan using Microsoft Security Essentials. This did not solve the problem. I then went into msconfig and turned off everything I could get away with in the startup and services tabs. This did not solve the problem. I then uninstalled every program on this computer save the most basic programs. This did not solve the problem (did not uninstall drivers or catalyst). I then went through and turned off every single service and did a reboot. This did not solve the problem. I then booted into safe mode and just tried shutting it down. The problem even happens in safe mode. I have tried examining the event logs but with no success. They just say things like "blah blah has entered the stopped state" with no real clues about what program is causing me all this grief. *it may be worth noting that Ubuntu is installed on the same computer and the ubuntu boot loader is the one being used.

• Is my class structure good enough?

  So I wanted to try out this challenge on reddit which is mostly about how you structure your data the best you can. I decided to challenge my C++ skills. Here's how I planned this. First, there's the Game class. It deals with time and is the only class main has access to. A game has a Forest. For now, this class does not have a lot of things, only a size and a Factory. Will be put in better use when it will come to SDL-stuff I guess A Factory is the thing that deals with the Game Objects (a.k.a. Trees, Lumberjack and Bears). It has a vector of all GameObjects and a queue of Events which will be managed at the end of one month. A GameObject is an abstract class which can be updated and which can notify the Event Listener The EventListener is a class which handles all the Events of a simulation. It can recieve events from a Game Object and notify the Factory if needed, the latter will manage correctly the event. So, the Tree, Lumberjack and Bear classes all inherits from GameObject. And Sapling and Elder Tree inherits from Tree. Finally, an Event is defined by an event_type enumeration (LUMBERJACK_MAWED, SAPPLING_EVOLUTION, ...) and an event_protagonists union (a GameObject or a pair of GameObject (who killed who ?)). I was quite happy at first with this because it seems quite logic and flexible. But I ended up questionning this structure. Here's why : I dislike the fact that a GameObject need to know about the Factory. Indeed, when a Bear moves somewhere, it needs to know if there's a Lumberjack ! Or it is the Factory which handles places and objects. It would be great if a GameObject could only interact with the EventListener... or maybe it's not that much of a big deal. Wouldn't it be better if I separate the Factory in three vectors ? One for each kind of GameObject. The idea would be to optimize research. If I'm looking do delete a dead lumberjack, I would only have to look in one shorter vector rather than a very long vector. Another problem arises when I want to know if there is any particular object in a given case because I have to look for all the gameObjects and see if they are at the given case. I would tend to think that the other idea would be to use a matrix but then the issue would be that I would have empty cases (and therefore unused space). I don't really know if Sapling and Elder Tree should inherit from Tree. Indeed, a Sapling is a Tree but what about its evolution ? Should I just delete the sapling and say to the factory to create a new Tree at the exact same place ? It doesn't seem natural to me to do so. How could I improve this ? Is the design of an Event quite good ? I've never used unions before in C++ but I didn't have any other ideas about what to use. Well, I hope I have been clear enough. • Corsair SSD appears completely blank and does not retain written data

  I have a 180GB Corsair SSD (model# CSSD-F180GB2-BRKT) as the primary drive in a Windows laptop. Recently the machine became unbootable after installing Windows updates. Windows installed updates before the machine shut down and the next time the machine boot up it complained about not being able to find a bootable device. After finding fixmbr unsuccessful at making the machine unbootable, I investigated a little within knoppix. Fdisk revealed an empty partition table. A scan by Testdisk came up empty. And finally 'head -c 1024 | hd' reveals all zeros. Creating a primary partition spanning the whole disk completes successfully, but after a reboot the disk appears empty again. dmesg reveals no read or write errors. smartctl indicates that the drive is healthy- although the SMART attribute values do not appear to be read properly. "Data Page | WARNING: PREVIOUS ATTRIBUTE HAS TWO" and "Threshold Page | INCONSISTENT IDENTITIES IN THE DATA" messages appear within the table of values. I don't have much experience with SSDs. Is this drive dead or something? Can anyone recommend any diagnostic tools that may be suited for diagnosing SSDs?

• System Issues and Major Malfuctions after Failed hibernation Exit

  I have a HP G71-340US that went into hibernation mode for a while and when I tried coming out of it, I got an error message: You're computer cannot come out if hibernation . Status: 0xc000009a Info: A fatal error occurred processing the restoration data. File: \hiberfil.sys Any information that was not saved before the computer went into hybernation will be lost enter=continue So I hit continue and it ran soooo super slow it. It was seriously crawling. Finally I gave up and turned it off manually (IE press and hold the button). It's been a week or two since then and EVERY SINGLE TIME I have tried to to do ANYTHING it takes forever. When I say forever, I literally mean takes 5-7 minutes to load the internet, then the page itself, then to click a link, so on so forth. Eventually everything just goes not responding and I have to give up (4-6 HOURS later). I also cannot access my thumb/jump drives once I've managed to load windows. I was going to try runing malware bytes incase of a virus, but it's windows explorer developes errors and goes not responding on me. Currently I'm running scan disk or check disk and like every file is coming back unreadable. I let it run the last 2 hours straight in chkdesk and I'm only at 6 percent with around 500+ errors and still going. Yes, I've taken logs of the errors via cell phone camera and patience. A week or two prior to this happening I had to change our the hard drive due to blunt force trama next to the mouse. OH! Running on Windows 7: ) And I've tried loading the computer in safe mode and it makes absolutely no difference. Any and all help would be appreciated. I really don't know what to do from here and I'm kind of freaking out. I've googled different part of the error and things that I've done/seen and there are so many different answers/topics that I thought it best to just post the questions.

• zfs pool error, how to determine which drive failed in the past

  I had been copying data from my pool so that I could rebuild it with a different version so that I could go away from solaris 11 and to one that is portable between freebsd/openindia etc. it was copying at 20mb a sec the other day which is about all my desktop drive can handle writing from the network. suddently lastnight it went down to 1.4mb i ran zpool status today and got this. pool: store state: ONLINE status: One or more devices has experienced an unrecoverable error. An attempt was made to correct the error. These errors are divided into three categories: READ – I/O errors occurred while issuing a read request. WRITE – I/O errors occurred while issuing a write request. CKSUM – Checksum errors. The device returned corrupted data as the result of a read request. it was saying low counts could be any thing from a power flux to a disk event but gave no suggestions as to what tools to check and determine with.

• How can I stop outlook 2003 from crashing?

  XP Outlook 2003 keeps crashing, sometimes freezing my whole computer. The STR: Have Outlook 2003 running (with the added "app" LOOKOUT for search and a pop mail as well as MS mail set up. The program loads and displays my reminders. I minimize the reminders. Outlook displays my email list. I have the "Reading pane" set to display right. There is often junk in my junk folder. When I click on the MS mail junk folder, there is sometimes junk with a blank description. Clicking on this to select and delete it is when the program is virtually certain to crash. Often when I reboot the program, the reading pane is again reset to the default, which is "no reading pane". If I change it back and then again click on the message the program often crashes. If I don't set the reading pane but select the message(s), they can be selected and removed. I then set the reading pane and things are okay for a period. This has been going on for some time now. As a part of trying to solve it, I did a deep scan with a number of "root kit" virus-removers. One did find 2 related root kit viruses and removed them. Ram seems okay, HDD shows okay. As I write this I realize that one thing I haven't tried is removing and re-installing LOOKOUT. I will do that now. Any other ideas or even better, solutions, would be most welcome.

• zsh : How to list directory content with tab?

  I just switched from BASH to ZSH and thing are pretty good, but: when I start typing cd /usr/share/s and hit TAB, this is what I get : $ cd /usr/share/sane/ sane/ skype/ ssl-cert/ screen/ smplayer/ strigi/ seed-gtk3/ snmp/ synaptic/ sgml/ software-properties/ system-config-printer/ sgml-base/ soprano/ sysv-rc/ sgml-data/ sounds/ simple-scan/ splashy/ And this is ok. If I then hit TAB again, I get $ cd /usr/share/screen/, the next candidate, witch is also OK. (BTW, how do I cycle back to the previous candidate? Sorry, on to my question) Now what if I want to see the contents of /usr/share/screen/ now ? You now, BASH-style? The cursor is at the end of the line, will I have to ctrl-a (or home), then del del (to erase cd) then ls then ENTER? That seems like a lot of typing. (And it - possibly unnecessarily - enters the command in the history) Would not there be a key (maybe modifier-TAB? but the obvious candidates are already taken by the desktop... I digress) that would tell zsh to stop cycling through /usr/share/ and instead, just list the content /usr/share/screen/ ?

• How do I get Tomcat 7 to start up faster in Linux CentOS kernel version 2.6.18?

  I am experiencing a problem with slow start up times for Tomcat 7. I have done some testing by tweaking configuration parameters both on Linux CentOS kernel version 2.6.18 and on Windows 7 using this link as my primary guide: http://wiki.apache.org/tomcat/HowTo/FasterStartUp and managed only a modest improvement. The improvements seemed to result when I added metadata-complete="true" attribute to the element of my WEB-INF/web.xml file and when I added the names of almost all the jars we use for our application to the tomcat.util.scan.DefaultJarScanner.jarsToSkip property in conf/catalina.properties file. I've also used this JAVA_OPTS in the setenv.sh file: JAVA_OPTS="$JAVA_OPTS -server -Xms1536m -Xmx1536m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -XX:NewRatio=2 -XX:+UseParallelGC -XX:ParallelGCThreads=2 -Dsun.rmi.dgc.client.gcInterval=1800000 -Dsun.rmi.dgc.server.gcInterval=1800000 -Dorg.apache.jasper.runtime.BodyContentImpl.LIMIT_BUFFER=true " but actually saw my start up times increase slightly. Our QA and production environments are on Linux CentOS so I'm hoping to get more information on improving Tomcat 7 start up times in that environment. My primary role is java developer and I don't have much system administration experience so I appreciate any input. Thank you for your time and suggestions.

• Windows-7 Ultimate 64 bit wont connect to my wired/wireless networks

  Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Everything was working fine & then just stopped working. The nic card Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller is enabled but does not connect to my router (cables & router ports are good). Wireless Atheros AR5007EG is enabled but the connection is limited (encryption type / key have been verified). A laptop running XP can connect both wired / wireless. SSID is not being broadcast, connect to network if it is not broadcasting is checked. Have checked services.msc for Bonjour & did not see it listed. Network & sharing center does not list any active networks. Device manager lists both devices as functioning properly. Router configuration has not been changed. Virus scan has not found anything. I would like to fix this rather than using Acronis to do a system restore. Thanks in advance for any advice offered in solving this. 26 Jan, the nic card & wireless are working using PCLinux OS Live CD. It appears that the problem is Windows 7 related.
