• ImageMagick and Grails not working

  I'm trying to have ImageMagick run from grails to convert some images when I run the command to make an image nothing happens. I get no errors, no information returned nothing at all. I've tried running other commands like touch and ps ux just to see if they work and they all work fine. It just seems like the imagemagick commands are getting lost and I''m not sure what to do. Here is the code I've been working with. String command = CH.config.ImageMagickPath + "/convert -size 40x20 xc:red xc:blue -append -rotate 90 append_rotate.gif" println command command.execute() CH.config.ImageMagickPath is set up to where imagemagick/bin is. I've taken what is shown in println command and run it in a terminal and it works fine. Is there any reason why I can't get IM to work from grails?

• ViewController vs. View

  Trying to wrap my head around the apple design scheme. I have a UIViewController and the corresponding XIB file that has my main screen in my application. I want to have a button on this XIB that displays another "form" (this is my disconnect) in the foreground where the user selects from a myriad of choices, then it hides that "form" and goes back to the first one. I'm completely lost here. Initially I thought I'd just add another view and set the self.view of my controller to the new view, add another IBAction and call it a day, but I can't seem to make that work. For sake of argument, say I want to "gray out" the current form, have a modal type window that takes up roughly 60% of the screen and requires you select an option, then it hides itself and we go back to normal. What is the standard approach here? Thanks

  I have the following code on the my page... <a href="javascript:change_product_photo(2);"><img id="alternate_product_photo_2" style="border-color:#666666;" src="/v/vspfiles/photos/00-6189-2S.jpg" border="1"> Sometimes there could be more of the <a href="javascript:change_product_photo(4);"> and each one would have a higher index number 5, 6 ,7, etc. What I want to do is for each and every instance of the href with javascript:change_product_photo(x) (where x is the index) remove both "_" from the change_product_link but leave the (x) index My thought was to first add a class to all hrefs that contain javascript:change_product_photo and then modify all of the href;s with that class but I am lost on how to do this. Here is what I got so far... $("a[href*='javascript:change_product_photo']").addClass('link_fix'); Now I don't know how to remove the "_" from the url.

• How do I consume a COM+ local server from C#?

  I have a web application from a company that has gone out of business. We're looking to extend the web app a bit with some asp.net functionality. The web app was written as an ISAPI application in Delphi, and uses COM+ to talk to the SQL Server and handles things like session management and authentication. So, in order to get the current user and other details, I have to use the undocument COM+ components. I was able to dig out the type library and auto generated IDL, but at this point i'm lost in creating a .NET proxy class for this. Is there a way to autogenerate the .net COM+ proxy either from the .dll itself (extracting the typelib info) or from the IDL? Note: These seem to be simple COM style objects hosted in COM+ servers, no subscriptions or transaction monitoring..

• How does jQuery .data() work?

  My Javascript knowledge is pretty limited. Instead of asking several javascript questions I got the "message" from Stack overflow and started using jQuery right away in order to save me some time. However several times I do not undestand the "magic" behind jQuery and I would love to learn the details. I want to use .data() in my application. The examples are very helpful. I do not understand however WHERE these values are stored. I inspect the webpage with Firebug and as soon as .data() saves an object to a dom element, I do not see any change in Firebug (either HTML or Dom tabs). I tried to look at jQuery source, but it is very advanced for my Javascript knowledge and I lost myself. So the question is: Where do the values stored by jQuery.data() actually go? Can I inspect/locate/list/debug them using a tool?

• Exception handling in Boost.Asio

  Boost.Asio documentation suggests the following exception handling pattern: boost::asio::io_service io_service; ... for (;;) { try { io_service.run(); break; // run() exited normally } catch (my_exception& e) { // Deal with exception as appropriate. } } The problem with it is that the context of exception is lost at the point when it's handled. For example, if I have multiple socket sessions going on, I don't know which one caused the exception to be thrown. What would be a better way to handle the exceptions from asynchronous handlers without wrapping them in try/catch blocks?

• Telling between a "natural" HTTP 404 and a PHP Generated one

  So I have a file that should never be accessed by a user directly, but included in another PHP file. If the file is called directly, it generates a HTTP Status 404 Not Found to trick a possible attacker that such file doesn't exist. However, if the hacker could tell that the 404 was generated by PHP or is not "natural" then the whole point of the header would be lost. So is it possible to tell whether the 404 was generated by the server naturally (because the file really doesn't exist) or by a PHP code? PS: I know this question might seem pretty weird lol

  Hi all I have been asked to monitor MSSQL Server (2005 & 2008) and am wondering what are good metrics to look at? I can access WMI counters but am slightly lost as to how much depth is going to be useful. Currently I have on my list: user connections logins per second latch waits per second total latch wait time dead locks per second errors per second Log and data file sizes I am looking to be able to monitor values that will indicate a degradation of performance on the machine or a potential serious issue. To this end I am also wondering at what values some of these things would be considered normal vs problematic? As I reckon it would probably be a really good question to have answered for the general community I thought i'd court some of you DBA experts out there (I am certainly not one of them!)   Ok, I'm lost. I am required to figure out how to validate an integer and String, but for some stupid reason, I can't use the Try-Catch method. I know this is the easiest way and so all the solutions on the internet are using it. I'm writing in Java. The deal is this, I need someone to put in an numerical ID and String name.   I'm dealing with a problem which needs to work with a lot of data. Currently its' values are represented as unsigned int. I know that real values do not exceed some limit, say 1000. That means that I can use unsigned short to store it. One profit is that it'll use less space. Do I have to pay for it by loosing in performance? Another assumption. I decided to store data as short but all calling functions use int, so I need to convert between these datatypes when storing/extracting values. Wiil the performance lost be dramatic? Third assumption. Due to great wish to econom memory I decided to use not short but just 10 bits packed into array of unsigned int. What will happen in this case comparing with previous ones?

  Let's face it, programmers can be show-offs. I've seen a lot of code that was only done a particular way to prove how smart the person who wrote it was. What's the best example of pure show-off code you've seen (or been responsible for) in your time? For me, it'd have to be the guy who wrote FizzBuzz in one line on a whiteboard during a programming interview. Not really that impressive in the scheme of things, but completely unnecessary and pure, "look-what-I-can-do". • Reading files using Windows API

  Hi I'm trying to write a console program that reads characters from a file. i want it to be able to read from a Unicode file as well as an ANSI one. how should i address this issue? do i need to programatically distinguish the type of file and read acoordingly? or can i somehow use the windows API data types like TCHAR and stuff like that. The only differnce between reading from the files is that in Unicode i have to read 2 bytes for a character and in ASNSI its 1 byte? im a little lost with this windows API. would appretiate any help thanks

  Hi, My local airport disgracefully blocks users without IE, and looks awful. I want to write a Python scripts that would get the contents of the Arrival and Departures pages every few minutes, and show them in a more readable manner. My tools of choice are mechanize for cheating the site to believe I use IE, and BeautifulSoup for parsing page to get the flights data table. Quite honestly, I got lost in the BeautifulSoup documentation, and can't understand how to get the table (whose title I know) from the entire document, and how to get a list of rows from that table. • multidimensional vector rotation and angle computation -- how?

  Input: two multidimensional (for example dim=8) vectors a and b. I need to find out the "directed" angle (0-2*Pi, not 0-Pi) between those vectors a and b. And if they are not parallel I need to rotate vector b in plane a,b by "directed" angle L. If they are parallel, plane does not matter, but angle of rotation is still the same L. For 2d and 3d this is quite easy, but for more dimensions I am lost, I didn't find anything on google, and I prefer using some already proved&tested equations (avoiding errors introduced by my calculations :-D). Thank you in advance for tips, links, etc. Edit: dimension of the space is the same as dimension of the vectors.

Despite the fact I follow the Apple way of use NSLocalizedString & create nibs for both, I already lost the track of the new string that need to get localized and found with surprise that I need to redo the nibs in spanish when I change the master. • WindowStartupLocation.CenterScreen is opening my window on the wrong display

  According to the documentation, CenterScreen should open the window in the center of the screen that contains the mouse cursor, however this is not happening. I have a dual monitor setup, with my secondary monitor appearing to the left of my primary monitor (the one with the task bar). When the user clicks a link in my interface on the primary (right-most) monitor, and I open a new window with WindowStartupLocation set to CenterScreen, the window appears in the center of the screen of the left monitor. This is not where the mouse is and I am lost as to why it is picking that display. Has anyone experienced this before or have any ideas for a workaround? If I can't get the proper behavior using WindowStartupLocation, I will just manually move the window to the proper display (I still have to figure that out though).

  I have a master page which is nested 2 levels. It has a master page, and that master page has a master page. When I stick controls in a ContentPlaceHolder with the name "bcr" - I have to find the controls like so: Label lblName =(Label)Master.Master.FindControl("bcr").FindControl("bcr").FindControl("Conditional1").FindControl("ctl03").FindControl("lblName"); Am I totally lost? Or is this how it needs to be done? I am about to work with a MultiView, which is inside of a conditional content control. So if I want to change the view I have to get a reference to that control right? Getting that reference is going to be even nastier! Is there a better way? Thanks

• In Django, why is user.is_authenticated a method and not a member variable like is_staff

  Hello all, I've lost some time with a bug in my app due to user authentication. I think that it's a bit confusing but maybe someone can explain the reason and it will appear to me very logical. The user.is_staff is a member variable while user.is_authenticated is a method. However is_authenticated only returns True or False depending if the class is User or AnonymousUser (see http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/topics/auth/) Is there a reason for that? • C# ASP.NET update SQL database with values from text boxes

  Here's what I have. User enters values into text boxes (personal information etc.) and then presses a save changes button. The values in these text boxes get stored in an SQL database. The problem I have is that when updating the database using the values from the text boxes, the page refreshes and the values in the text boxes are lost (or rather they return to the values that are already in the database as the data from the database is loaded into the text boxes on Page_Load). When I update the database using valuse stored in variables it all works fine. What is the best way to update with the values from the text boxes?

• How to effectively draw on desktop in C#?

  I want to draw directly on the desktop in C#. From searching a bit, I ended up using a Graphics object from the Desktop HDC (null). Then, I painted normally using this Graphics object. The problem is that my shapes get lost when any part of the screen is redrawn. I tried a While loop, but it actually ends up drawing as fast as the application can, which is not the update rate of the desktop. Normally, I would need to put my drawing code in a "OnPaint" event, but such thing does not exist for the desktop. How would I do it? • Using LinqSql, stored procedure returns datatype image problem

  Hello! I´ve got a problem when using LINQ to execute a stored procedure and return its values. One of the column that the stored procedure returns is of datatype image and contains a pdf in binary form.(this because the database is deployed on sql server 2000, otherwised i would choose a blob) When including the stored procedure in my linq class its generates that my pdf columns is datatype int in the designer class. I´ve work around the problem and manually changed the datatype in representation of the stored procedure in the designer class. But when adding/removing items in the linq class the designer file re-generates and my changes are lost. Are there any better solution for my problem??

  The difference between connection and read timeout, is that read specifies how long the data connection can be open until it automatically closesc, correct? A connection timeout specifies how long the socket should wait until a connection is established, correct? So if a connection timeout is set to "infinity" what does that really mean? Will it try to establish a connection and if no response is given (as on packets are lost? or port is down?) it will just idle? or will Could someone please explain the basics of network/socket timeouts? and in what situation can a client socket wait infinity?

• Why would a TableAdapter populate a DataSet with "1/1/2000" for an entire timestamp column?

  I have a TableAdapter filling a DataSet, and for some reason every select query populates my timestamp column with the value 1/1/2000 for every selected row. I first verified that original values are intact on the DB side; for the most part, they are, although it seems a few rows lost their original timestamp because of update queries performed programmatically before the issue was discovered. The DataColumn type is DateType, while the database (Postgres) column type is timestamp. Up until recently, this was all playing very nicely. I noticed the issue in a bound DataGridView control, and verified that this is not related to data binding by utilizing the 'Preview Data' option in the VS DataSet Editor. Usually when I notice unexpected values popping up in my application it's related to a mis-configured property, type conflict, or another silly mistake I've made. So after checking properties and types, and even recreating the TableAdapter from scratch, to say I'm a little baffled is an understatement. Does anyone have any ideas of what I could do to fix the issue and/or diagnose the cause?
