• Continuing education with Visual Basic 9

  I am completely new to programming and starting my education with visual basic 9 and SQL. I have read Visual Basic, in easy steps, 2nd edition by Mike Mcgrath. Although it was very easy to understand, it only gave me an introduction to learning VB. I'm looking for something more in depth, albeit for a beginner. I've read through the questions with a VB and book tag. Unfortunately, most of what I've found here references VB 6 and VB 8. Any recommendations? I cannot afford to create a library or college at the moment. So, I need to make sure that what I do buy counts. Thanks for any suggestions!

• NSFetchedResultsControllerDelegate in a second view controller (not firing?)

  I am running into an issue similar to the one described here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1319940/nsfetchedresultscontrollerdelegate-not-firing (the delegate for my NSFetchedResultsControllerDelegate are not being called on my second view controller) I can't seem to get the proposed solutions to work. I have a main view that loads information from Core Data just fine, but when it pushes a separate controller (and passes the managed object to it), the delegate methods won't fire. I've read about 'mergeChangesFromContextDidSaveNotification' but I don't understand how to synchronize the two manage objects and/or get the delegate methods to be called. • python foursquare - SSL3 certificate verify failed

  I'm trying to make a userless request to the Foursquare API using Mike Lewis' Python wrapper - https://github.com/mLewisLogic/foursquare: client = foursquare.Foursquare(client_id=Client_ID, client_secret=Client_Secret) categs = client.venues.categories() Intermittently, I get a "Error connecting to Foursquare API" msg. Running a logger to catch a more detailed message produces: "SSL routines:SSL3_GET_SERVER_CERTIFICATE:certificate verify failed" This didn't use to happen and occurs both on my local Windows development machine and on a server running ubuntu. Am I missing something basic here about security certificates? The problem is intermittent and sometimes just leaving it a minute and retrying fixes the problem temporarily. I've downloaded the latest 20120716 version of the wrapper although in the code for init.py it still says API_VERSION = '20120608'. I'm using Python 2.73 and have also signed up for the Foursquare API key, using the id and secret in the above code. I listed the urls, using my local IP:8000 and tried using separate keys for the local and dev machines but this seems to make no difference. Help much appreciated. Thanks.

• How can I store data in a table as a trie? (SQL Server)

  Hi, To make things easier, the table contains all the words in the English dictionary. What I would like to do is be able to store the data as a trie. This way I can traverse the different branches of the trie and return the most relevant result. First, how do I store the data in the table as a trie? Second, how do I traverse the tree? If it helps at all, the suggestion in this previous question is where this question was sparked from. Please make sure it's SQL we're talking about. I understood the Mike Dunlavey's C implementation because of pointers but can't see how this part (The trie itself) works in SQL. Thanks, Matt

• Mapped Stored Procedures in EF 1

  All, I'm using mapped Stored Procedures in EF 1. I've completed the following steps: 1) I've created my INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE queries in SQL Server. 2) I've built the EDMX and imported the INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE sprocs as part of my model. 3) I've set up a Stored Procedure Mapping on a table inside of my EDMX file. The INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE sprocs were mapped accordingly. Using this approach, I would expect to rebuild the application (and mine builds successfully) and then see the Stored Procedures as available function names via my EDMX object, such as: _entities.InsertComment(..), _entities.UpdateComment(..), and _entities.DeleteComment(..) Intellisense is not picking these names up and I can't figure out why. If I perform these same steps using EF4, the function names are automatically picked up by Intellisense after adding the Stored Procedure Mappings. Is this a bug in EF1? Is there something else I should be doing? Thanks in advance, Mike

I've tried removing white space, but no luck. Any ideas? If one of you can help it would be much appreciated.

  hey all, just getting started on hadoop and curious what the best way in mapreduce would be to count unique visitors if your logfiles looked like this... DATE siteID action username 05-05-2010 siteA pageview jim 05-05-2010 siteB pageview tom 05-05-2010 siteA pageview jim 05-05-2010 siteB pageview bob 05-05-2010 siteA pageview mike and for each site you wanted to find out the unique visitors for each site? I was thinking the mapper would emit siteID \t username and the reducer would keep a set() of the unique usersnames per key and then emit the length of that set. However that would be potentially storing millions of usernames in memory which doesn't seem right. Anyone have a better way? I'm using python streaming by the way thanks

• HTML - Word Doc Images

  Okay I have roughly 150 + pages of procedures all written in MS word. The person who wrote the procedures did an excellent job of recording the process how to perform specific tasks. This individual went though and created screen shots a MS word doc. There are approx 2 screen shots per page. So it is roughly 300 images and I do not want to recreate the wheel. Does anyone know a quick way of handling the images? The written portion is pretty straightforward but the images is what I am struggling with. Regards, Mike

Within the site_member table create multiple field for each field... ex: m_firstname1, m_firstname2, m_age1, m_age2, etc... Store the couple member data in one field each... and separate with a comma in the data field ex: m_firstname (Mike, Sherry) Create a separate table site_member_c duplicating the same fields that are in site_member table. • calculated colum or stored proceedure or just php funcion needed ?

  I have an order table in MySQL database and is has a field/column which store the dattime stamp of when the order was placed and I need to calculate when the order must be shipped. I could probably figure out how to right a function to calculate the ship date and call that when ever needed but I think, not sure it may moake more sense to have the shipdate as a column that is somehow calculate in mysql. that being said I have Never used a stored procedure or created a calculated field. the later I think would be best but again not sure. I used to make calculated field all the time in FMP but I've gotten away from that program. if someone could point me in the right direction or tell me why it would be better to do it one way over another I'd appreciate it . thanks Mike

  Hello, I am doing this simple project using Flex 4 SDK and I got stuck with this simple problem: I have turned sortable property for AdvancedDataGridColumn to false, but the column header is still rendered as: As You can see, my label for this header is "06", but the column header is divided and it keeps the place for sort arrow. How can I change this? I would like my column header to contain only my label. • Create two semi-transparent images that when stacked produce the target image

  Due to CSS limitations I am forced to stack to semi-transparent images on my website. I won't go into detail regarding the CSS since if I can get this question answered the problem is moot. Anyway, I would like to modify image A in the GIMP such that it will look like it did originally after being stacked on top of image B. Both image A and image B have their opacities set to 50%. Image B is a solid color throughout, whereas image A has some minor details such as a gradient. • Online Image Slideshow Question. File Access Problems.

  Hi, I have a flash .swf file that I embed on my webpage. On my server I have the .swf file and multiple image folders. I would like to load every file in one of those folders into the flash slideshow. How should I go about doing this? I tried used Air but it doesn't work on my system as an application so I doubt it will work online. Eventually I plan on making a menu where you can select different folders to display and since they are of different sizes, a foreach loop would be optimal. Keeping a txt file with the number of images is also possible if theres a way to read that in, but I would prefer the more dynamic approach. I am working towards using php for the website if that helps find a solution. Thanks, -Mike Also my slideshow works great online currently but i have to hardcode in the number of files.

  The problem is there is a folder ./log/ containing the files like: jan2010.xml, feb2010.xml, mar2010.xml, jan2009.xml, feb2009.xml, mar2009.xml ... each xml file would like: <root><record name="bob" spend="20"></record>...(more records)</root> I want to write a piece of ColdFusion code (log.cfm) that simply parsing those xml files. For the front end I would let user to choose a year, then the click submit button. All the content in that year will be show up in separate table by month. Each table shows the total money spent for each person. like: person cost bob 200 mike 300 Total 500 Thanks.

  I inherited a mysql database that has a table with columns like this: object_id, property, value It holds data like this: 1,first_name,Jane 1,last_name,Doe 1,age,10 1,color,red 2,first_name,Mike 2,last_name,Smith 2,age,20 2,color,blue 3,first_name,John 3,last_name,Doe 3,age,20 3,color,red ... Basically what I want to do is treat this table as a regular table. How would I get the id numbers (or all properties) of a person who is age 20 sorted by last and than first name? So far I have: SELECT object_id FROM table WHERE property = 'age' AND value = '20' union SELECT object_id FROM table WHERE property = 'color' AND value = 'red' But I'm not sure how to go about ordering the data. • Remove Duplicates from JavaScript Array

  This seems like such a simple need but I've spent an inordinate amount of time trying to do this to no avail. I've looked at other questions on SO and I haven't found what I need. I have a very simple JavaScript array such as peoplenames = new Array("Mike","Matt","Nancy","Adam","Jenny","Nancy","Carl"); that may or may not contain duplicates and I need to simply remove the duplicates and put the unique values in a new array. That's it. I could point to all the codes that I've tried but I think it's useless because they don't work. If anyone has done this and can help me out I'd really appreciate it. JavaScript or jQuery solutions are both acceptable.

  In Excel I have a list of names that in the cell appear stacked, and I want each name in its own column. I was thinking Python may be a good way to do this? Example: Joe Smith John Hawk Mike Green Lauren Smith One cell will look exactly like that, with each name on its line within the cell but all of the names contained in the cell. I have 50 cells each with 1-20 stacked names and I want to put each name in its own cell on a given row. So, in my example all of those names would occupy the same row but each would have their own column. Any ideas?

• Running matlab in the background

  Hi, I am running matlab on 48 virtual machines and would like to automate it. I ssh into the machines then use matlab -r matlab_command > outfile.txt & to get the process to run in the background and run fine when I logout. The only problem is that when i jobs my process is stopped and won't start until I fg ^z bg. Is there a matlab flag so that I can run it in the background without having it stop? Thanks, Mike
