How can I print a batch of files with custom printer settings?

I have a collection of A3-size (tabloid size) PDF drawings which I would like to print as a batch. The particular printer I am using doesn't automatically check the paper size of the document - it always defaults to A4 (letter) size paper unless told otherwise. I need to go into the printer settings and tell the printer to use A3 size paper. A batch printing utility like DarkStorm's Batch Print Handler would be good for this. However this particular utility doesn't support changing the paper size settings or other printer settings. How can I go about batch printing these PDFs with a particular paper size?

What extra permission settings were added in Windows Server 2003 over Windows Server 2000?

We have a domain controller currently running Windows Server 2000, and we're in the process of upgrading some of our workstations to Windows 7. The problem is that users are getting access denied messages to things they should be able to do, even trivial things like deleting shortcuts from the desktop. The users run at less than administrative levels, which we want to maintain. We think this is caused by Windows 7 having extra security permission settings that are getting defaulted to denied, because the new settings wouldn't actually exist in the Windows 2000 profiles. The reason I'm asking about Windows 2003 Server is because we have an available license of that, and not to 2008 (which would likely solve the problem completely, but costs $). So what I'd like to find out is if the permission settings in 2003 will be sufficient for our needs to justify upgrading the domain controller to 2003.

Making a Live Thumb drive boot with Persistent files, settings AND *drivers* that load on boot?

I have seen https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LiveUsbPendrivePersistent but it's a mess. What methods support persistent drivers as well as files and settings and don't screw up lifespan of the flash drive? I'd like to see your personal recommendations on say, Portable Linux, USB Creator, Remastersys + Unetbootin, etc Backstory: I have a Inspiron 1525 that's hard drive has been slowly dying. I want to switch to a live USB/CD/DVD system until I can get it repaired but my laptops internal wifi device requires a network connection by another means for Xubuntu to let it work, and then I have to enter my Wifi key again, and THEN I have to reinstall Skype etc... I'd be damned every time I have to shut the laptop down. I'm ok with making a shell script for installing apps and copying settings as required but a good persistent install should make this old hat and slow and it doesn't take care of drivers. The last time I tried making an ISO with Remastersys it didn't seem to copy all the required settings.

ISA - Why do i suddenly need to specify settings on the client machines?

Have been pulling my hair out over this one for hours, and wondering if someone can help. I have a server with two network interfaces that was running isa 2004 and humming until i installed sbs service pack + isa 2004 service pack 3. Grrrrrrrrrr I can get the client machines to connect to the internet but only by installing the ISA Client on each machine or setting proxy settings etc in the internet settings. Ideally i want the client machines to just work with no configuration or proxy server settings as they were before. Where do i start, and what other information do you need from me if any to find out what im doing wrong Thanks!

Staying focussed - Any applications to monitor what windows are open, record the titles and then tell you what you spend you day doing?

I am bad at procrastination. I'm always opening new tabs to check out HackerNews or something. So I've installed StayFocussed on Chromium, so that I can't view more than X minutes of certain sites. Is there something like this for the Ubuntu Desktop? It would work with applications, not websites (obviously). I would like an application that would monitor what windows I have open or visible, and limit me to only certain applications. Maybe give warnings if I spend to much time looking at IRC or something. Is there any applications for that?

If you run Sharepoint 2010 in one forest, users in another forest and a 1-way forest in-place. There is some additional configuration needed in Sharepoint 2010. I included links below that discuss the details. My post is not to be in-depth how to setup, rather share a tidbit not discussed in documentation (not that I could find). Thanks to a smart co-worker and process monitor, it was found there is a registry entry, the application pool needs READ access. You can either manually grant permissions on the server or add registry permission in AD Group Policy. Hope this helps. Dual Monitor/Xinerama not working; cannot even detect on-board graphic card

I have Kubuntu 12.04 and two identical VGA monitors. One I plugged via DVI-VGA adapter into the DVI port of my discrete AMD Radeon HD 6670, the other into the VGA port of my on-board graphic card (Radeon HD 6410D). After installing Kubuntu I got a black screen, so I booted with nomodeset and installed AMD's catalyst drivers but only the monitor plugged into the discrete graphic card worked. Using lspci I saw that the on-board graphics was not listed. Then I found in the BIOS settings the options "Surround View" and "Onboard Dual Link DVI" both disabled. After enabling both, the on-board graphics card shows up in lspci but in amdcccle, it only shows as [Uknown display]Uknown adapter. When I try to enable xinerama, I get a black screen after rebooting on both monitors. I tried several options and hints from the web but nothing worked so far. I also reinstalled the AMD drivers several times. What should I do?

How to monitor outgoing server activity to detect malware?

I have a website that has previously been victim of malware. I restored the site from an old backup and have made every effort to lock down the server. I have no way to be absolutely certain that the backup I used is clean, and I'm worried that this malware may re-appear. I would like to use a tool to monitor outgoing port activity to detect signs of malware activity. Unfortunately I'm using a server host that does not give me shell access, so I need to use a tool that can be installed via FTP and used via the browser. My site is Joomla :( so a Joomla extension with this capability would work, but I haven't found that yet. Any suggestions. Many thanks

How to solve dual monitor issue, which happens only during X start?

When is loading and two monitors are connected, instead of a login screen I see this: ...after clicking OK, selection appears: Then I'm following to console login, disconnecting by hand the secondary monitor cable, restart lightdm with a command sudo service lightdm restart ...and voila! System loads fine. If I disconnect the cable before boot X will be loaded fine too. It's not a nice 'feature' when I have to disconnect the cable each boot or X restart. I was trying to delete monitors.xml but it didn't help. The situation relates to my notebook with Intel integrated GPU. The same happens on two different pairs of monitors: at the office and at home. How can I fix this? Ubuntu 12.04 x64 Desktop with default Unity GUI.

Monitor aspect ratio; Does the difference matter?

So, I'm looking ordering myself a new development desktop soon and setting up a PROPER office environment by the end of this year. To boost productivity, I'm going to purchase three new monitors. I find that two just isn't enough when I'm debugging or doing something intensive. That said, I had something pointed out to me the other day that I never really noticed nor cared about before - is the difference between a 16:10 and a 16:9 monitor noticeable when programming? Do you really miss those few extra lines, or is it something that you don't notice at all. I notice HP only seems to sell 16:9 monitors (as far as I have found). Is this becoming something of a new standard with the recent growth and cleaver marketing of of "HD 16:9"? To summarize: Has anybody made the switch from 16:10 to 16:9 (or vise-versa) and actually noticed the difference while programming?

WhatsApp & Tasker for Android – Read & Write messages

So, I finally gave up on all my previous the Microsoft Mobile/Phone OS devices and made my switch to Android this year. I am using my Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 with CyanogenMod 9.1.0 (http://get.cm/get/jenkins/7086/cm-9.1.0-n7000.zip) and ClockworkMod 6.0.1.2 (http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-6.0.1.2-n7000.zip) since August this year and I am so happy with the performance and the flexibility it offers me. As a software developer by profession, I would expect most of my gadget to be highly customizable and programmable (one time or at intervals) to suit my needs as close as it can. I was introduced to Automation for Android – Tasker (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.dinglisch.android.taskerm&hl=en) via reddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/tasker) and the word ‘automation’ was enough for me to dive right into this app. Only automation that I did earlier was switching profiles depending on location on there phones. And now, just imagine a complete set of possibilities that can be automate on the phone or via the phone. I did my research and found a couple of other tools that do the same/as close as what Tasker can do and few of them are even free. There’s one even by Microsoft called on{X} (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.onx.app&hl=en). Microsoft’s on{X} really caught my eye. You can write code for your phone on the web application by them, deploy it on your phone and even trace the flow all using your PC. Really brilliant, I love the fact that it’s all JavaScript. Here comes the but, it is still very very young and it’s policy of accessing my News Feed on Facebook is not something that I can not digest. On{X} is good, but as I said earlier, the API is not very mature and hence, I gave up on it. I bought Tasker, the best 5,00 € I spent in ages and I want to talk about it in this post. I am still a “noob” while operating this tool, but I tried my shot at automating WhatsApp (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.whatsapp&hl=en), a popular messenger for various platform. The requirement for the automation is that, if I send a WhatsApp ‘wru’ message to the phone, it should respond back giving the location and battery level of my phone. How can I get mouse capture to work in virtualbox when I move guest window to second monitor?

I'm running VirtualBox on a Win7 host. Guest OS is Centos. My setup is a laptop (screen 1) with a huge external monitor (screen 2). I'm only telling Centos there is one monitor though. When I start up VirtualBox on screen 1, the mouse capture works fine. I don't have mouse integration because (I think) the kernel on Centos is too old to support it. That's fine, I don't mind doing the Right-Control thing. The problem I have is that when I drag the whole VM window over to my second monitor, the mouse capture doesn't work right anymore. I click inside the VM and can move the VM cursor a little bit, but I can't always get to the edges of the VM screen -- before I get all the way to an edge, the cursor will escape from the VM as if I had hit right-control. But it's still captured according to the icon, and if I then hit right-control, the guest cursor jumps to a different screen location. My workaround: if I have the VM window mostly on screen 2, but a small corner of it still on screen 1, then the mouse capture works correctly. Is there a setting to make this work better?

Ubutu 14.04 triple screen, third screen black and X cursor

I am having some issues getting my third screen working properly. I had triple screens working fine on 12.04, using 2 nvidia cards. Did a fresh install of 14.04 and having no end of problems getting it working. It either will just be disabled, or the screen is black with the cursor as an X. I can only enable it from the nvidia server settings tool. The Ubuntu native display settings won't even show the 3rd screen. I tried copying the xorg.conf from my old install, which upon restarting X worked fine on the login screen, but then it just sat there after I logged in and didn’t do anything (mouse was still working). I am using gnome-session-fallback instead of unity if that makes any difference. Still having these issues if I try unity though. How do I get my 3rd screen working and displaying a desktop? Ubuntu 12.04 Touchscreen Calibration

I have a machine with Ubuntu 12.04 installed, with dual monitor, via VGA and DVI Interface. The monitor is one touch screen and the other one is regular LCD Monitor. The touch screen is made in China with some unknown brand, and I am using eGalax Driver. The touch screen is now detected and works, but i need to do some calibration since it does not correctly perform click on touch. The problem is, when I’m using xinput_calibrator, it shows 4 crosses to be clicked on, because I’m using dual monitor, the crosses is now show 2 on the touch screen (touchable) and the others on the other monitor which is regular non-touch monitor. Please help, thank you.

Why have mp3 files ripped with Lame always have 128 kbit/s irrespect of settings?

Using Sound Juicer I am able to rip Cds very conveniently. I would like to rip them in about 256 kbit/s variable bitrate. To accomplish this I have defined the settings for mp3 in gnome-audio-profiles-properties as follows: audio/x-raw-int,rate=44100,channels=2 ! lame name=enc mode=0 vbr-quality=0 ! id3v2mux where vbr-quality=0 should give me a variable bitrate averaging 245 kbit/s. The resulting files however always say they are in 128 kbit/s. Is this only a tagging bug or is indeed the bitrate that low? How could I find out?

HI, I want to have set configuration settings for a unit test project that is only relative for one machine ( i.e build machine). So for e.g. is the unit test project is being compiled on a developer machine then use settings A from App.config, if it's compiled on a build machine then use settings B from App.config. Is there a best practice for this sort of things?

What are the default layout settings in gnome-terminal?

I want to replace gnome-terminal fully by lxterminal. I've started by changing the default terminal emulator. So I ran sudo update-alternatives --config x-terminal-emulator, and chose lxterminal. After that, I ran dconf-editor and went to org - gnome - desktop - applications - terminal and changed gnome-terminal to lxterminal and removed the -x in the exec arg part. The only problem though, is that by default, lxterminal doesn't look like gnome-terminal. What are gnome-terminal's default layout settings? I'm especially looking for the hexadecimal colour codes for both text and background.

Ruby and jQuery -- $(document).ajaxSend() not modifying the params as expected

I cannot get jquery's ajaxSend (http://api.jquery.com/ajaxSend/) to properly modify the parameters. However, random and _method (both needed for IE issues) do not get set. Logging settings inside ajaxSend shows me that they are set to settings.data: "remote=1&authenticity_token=6GA9R_snip_253D&random=1270584905846&_method=get" but when it gets sent across the wire, I only have the following: authenticity_token 6GA9R_snip_253D remote 1 Why in the world is this not working?

How do I implement a "sliding out of / into" effect on a settings menu similar to that in Angry Birds?

I'm trying to implement a settings menu component similar to that in Angry Birds - a button control that makes an options menu slide out of it and back into it when clicked on. I use scene2d.ui to build the UI components: a Button in a Table to implement the button control, a Table to implement the options menu, and a Stack to lay these out one on top of the other and at this moment I have the following behavior: When the user hits the button control for the first time, then the alpha of the table component is set to 1; When the user hits the button control the second time, then the alpha of the table component is set to 0; And so on. Any ideas how I can get the sliding out of and into effect on user clicks with libgdx? Similar to what Angry Birds provides. Maybe using the TweenEngine, actions, interpolations, combinations of these? Thanks in advance.

changed plesk root name, what DNS settings get modified?

we recently changed our plesk server's main URL from siteold.com to sitenew.com. many websites had their NS set to ns1.siteold.com - does plesk automatically update that to need ns1.sitenew.com? should I change the godaddy settings? attempting to change them states "Nameserver Not Registered" - is this simply the delay required? lastly, when adding a new domain to plesk, one would simply need to adjust the nameserver for that site in godaddy to ns1.sitenew.com or ns1.newdomain.com? (does plesk have a centralized name server, or does each site acquire its own?)

Why Gsettings isn't enough to reset my nautilus settings?

I'm trying to narrow down a bug (to eventually report it or give up if it'll turn out that resetting a simple setting will be enough to get rid of it) I noticed that with a brand new user the bug doesn't pop up so I tried to reset the config of my user's nautilus I renamed .config/nautilus I renamed .nautilus2 (strange name... why the 2?) and I did a gsettings reset-recursively org.gnome.nautilus strangely enough, it didn't work: I previously set up to use my home as the desktop folder, and now the key has correctly been resetted $gsettings get org.gnome.nautilus.preferences desktop-is-home-dir false and yet on my desktop I see the contents of my home folder (meaning that the settings have not been resetted) I know that with the transition to gtk3 there've been lots of changes (before I should've used gconf... but now there's dconf and gsettings), so there're quite a bit of question about nautilus... but these unfortunately now seem to be outdated

C#.NET Reload configuration settings from an external config file during run-time.

I'm writing a game server in C#.Net and would like to reload or refresh settings from a config file while the server is running. Ideally I would like to save the settings in an XML file, have the ability to edit the file while the game server is running and then send the server the command to reload the settings from the file. I know I can use a database to do this as well, but the game server is fairly small and I think it would be more practical to just save settings in a flat-file. I will have file-level access to the machine the server will run on. What should I use?

Where does Ubuntu Software Center store its (language) settings?

On a fresh install (13.04) I see a strange mix of languages in Software Center The menu (like my system language) is in English, but the descriptions are in German. I want the descriptions in English too. I am using a german keyboard and have German installed too (for giving support to students with German as system language :-)) In system settings I have moved German below English - so it should be ignored, I have logged out after that. I have cleared the "Software Center Cache" with Ubuntu Tweak. The picture remains the same.
