• Solr 3 with jetty and ubuntu 11.10

  I'd like to install solr 3. It will accept connections only locally. I read that jetty takes less memory than tomcat. I have Ubuntu 11.10 server. There is no clear tutorial about it anywhere on the internet. Most of them are old and talking about other combinations. I tried some of them, but didn't succeed in making it work. I'd prefer using packages with apt-get, but if the packages are not updated, I may install each part manually. Also, some tutorials say to install openjdk-6-jdk and other sun-java6-jdk. What's the difference? What are the steps to set up solr 3 + jetty in ubuntu 11.10?

• Should I use an ssl terminator or just haproxy?

  I'm trying to figure out how to set up my architecture for a socket.io app that will require both https and wss connections. I've found many tutorials on the web suggesting that you use something like stud or stunnel in front of haproxy, which then routes your unencrypted traffic to your app. If I were to go this route, is it suggested that haproxy and the ssl terminator be on separate instances, or is it fine if they are on the same EC2 server instance? If I do not want to use a separate ssl terminator, could I use haproxy to terminate the ssl? Or instead would it be possible to proxy these https and wss connections to my application and have the node app terminate the ssl itself?

• Securing a Windows Server 2008 R2 Public Web Server

  I'm setting up a public web server: Windows Server 2008 R2, IIS7.5. Does anyone have a tutorial / walkthrough / tips on properly securing a public web server? I've seen a few tutorials but mostly focused on Windows Server 2003. What I've done so far: Created a specific user account for the website / app pool, Renamed Admin account, Installed FTPS, Configured firewall to block any non-public service (web / https), Configured firewall to allow access to management interfaces only from specific IP addresses (rdp, IIS management, ftp) Maybe a few other things but can't remember at the moment... ICMP is allowed... Should I disable all except ping? Port scan reveals only web and https ports. Any other suggestions? Thanks

• how do I match movement of an object from 2d video into a 3d package ?

  I'm trying to add objects in a 3d package(Blender) using recorded footage. I've played with Icarus and it's great to capture the camera movement. Also the Blender 2.41 importer script works in Blender 2.49 as well. The problem is I can't seem to get 3d coordinates for objects. I have tried Autodesk(RealVIZ) MatchMover 2011 and gone through the tutorials. Tutorial 3 shows how to link a vertex from a 3d mesh to a 2d trackpoint, but the setup is for camera movement. Tutorial 4 goes into Motion capture, but it uses 2 videos of the same motion taken with 2 cameras from different viewpoints. I've tried to bypass that using the same footage twice, but that failed, as the 3d coordinate system ends up messed up. What software do you recommend for this (mapping 3d coordinates to 2d tracked points and importing them into a 3d package) ? What is the recommended technique ? Any good examples out there ?   Is it possible to run hadoop on multi-node and these nodes install hadoop on different paths? I noticed the tutorial, such as Michael Noll's, http://www.michael-noll.com/tutorials/running-hadoop-on-ubuntu-linux-multi-node-cluster/, asks hadoop to be installed on different nodes with the same installation path. I tried to run hadoop on multi-node. Each node installed hadoop on different path. But not success. I noticed that the hadoop assume installation paths are the same in default. The problem is when I execute start-dfs.sh it tries to start hadoop deamons on the salve nodes from the same path as on master. "Whereas the installation path is different. Were the relevant files modified to reflect the installed locations on each node"? Which file I should modify to reflect the installed locations on each node?

  I am using Outlook 2011 with gmail. I moved to Outlook 2011 recently. Before that I was using web mail. When I moved to Outlook recently, I got all my labels with the emails. But now when I go the web mail and create a label, it does not come up as a folder in Outlook 2011. Similarly if i delete a label from Gmail, it does not come up in Outlook 2011. • How can I display and log PHP errors on IIS7?

  We're running PHP 5.2.5 on an IIS 7 Server and we're having problems making PHP errors visible... At the moment whenever we have a PHP error the server sends back a 500 error with the message "The page cannot be displayed because an internal server error has occurred." This might be a good setting for production websites but it's rather annoying on a development server... ;-) I have tried configuring php.ini to display errors to the screen as well as log them to a specific folder but it seems that the Server catches all errors before and prevents and handling by PHP... Does someone know what we have to do to make IIS display PHP errors on screen? Any links, tipps or tutorials on the subject would be appreciated!

  My server is running Ubuntu Hardy and Ruby 1.8.6 installed using aptitude. I'd like to upgrade to Ruby 1.8.7 but, unfortunately, the Ruby package includes Ruby 1.8.7 starting from Ubuntu Intrepid. I read a couple of tutorials about how to upgrade to Ruby 1.8.7 and I found at least 3 different way to accomplish this task: backports installation from source installation from source and multiple versions I'm a bit confused. How do you recommend to upgrade to Ruby 1.8.7 taking into consideration I don't need multiple Ruby versions on the same server? I'd like to cleanly replace the existing Ruby 1.8.6 with Ruby 1.8.7.

• Syntax error in apc.ini: unexpected '='

  I installed APC on Ubuntu 10.04 and it seems to be working fine but I'm seeing this error in my Apache error.log: PHP: syntax error, unexpected '=' in /etc/php5/apache2/conf.d/apc.ini on line 2 The contents of the file are: cat /etc/php5/apache2/conf.d/apc.ini extension=apc.so apc.enabled="1" apc.shm_segments="1" apc.shm_size="192" apc.num_files_hint="1024" And I have also tried it without the quotes (") around the values and get the same error. I've looked at loads of the tutorials on installing APC that mention apc.ini and they all seem to use one of the two syntax formats I have tried. I'd appreciate any ideas. Update: This still causes it: cat /etc/php5/apache2/conf.d/apc.ini extension='apc.so' apc.enabled='1' apc.shm_segments='1' apc.shm_size='192' apc.num_files_hint='1024' I changed to: cat /etc/php5/apache2/conf.d/apc.ini extension=apc.so and it still happens (there's no line 2 in the file now!) I'm assuming a /etc/init.d/apache2 reload will be sufficient to read the new config, is that my mistake?

• How to create a readonly root linux: Can be mounted as writeable for persistent changes?

  I'd like a read only file system that runs almost entirely in RAM but the compact flash or hardrive can be mounted and made writeable to make persistent changes. How do I do this on Linux? I've looked at several tutorials but none really explain how to create such a system with the option of being able to mount the storage device and make persistent changes. • Limiting Sybase ASE 15 CPU usage on VM

  I've set up a single CPU Sybase ASE 15.7 test/hobby/experimentation system on a Debian Squeeze x64 KVM VM. I notice the CPU load goes to 100% and stays there. Definitely not a Sybase guru, only interested to see if some programs I'm running work on the database. Looking at Sybase docs it seems ASE detects the machine is idle and then takes over all processing just waiting for a connection (and if needed, doing some housekeeping apparently). Normally that would be fine but as it is running in a VM it's taking away processor resources other VMs could use - and the increased fan noise of the PC near my desk annoy me. I've tried to remedy this: set the "runnable process search count" parameter from DEFAULT (2000 IRC) to 3 in /opt/sybase/ASE-15_0/SYBASE.cfg from http://sybase.reygrobellet.com/tutorials/install_sybase_vb/standalone04_configure_oralin11#TOC-Configure-kernel I added this to my /etc/init.d/sybase startup script: echo 0 /proc/sys/kernel/randomize_va_space (though I don't think it'll make much difference) How can I tell Sybase to "behave" and not hog the processor - I don't mind reduced performance.

• Are Motherboards for the Acer Aspire One AOA150 Netbook Compatible with the AOA110?

  I have an Acer Aspire One ZG5 AOA110-1588 netbook, and the motherboard doesn't have a port for a SATA 2.5 inch hard drive; it only supports this slow 8GB SSD type drive. Through research I've discovered that the AOA150 motherboards do have a SATA slot, and the bottom plate of these laptops have an appropriate protrusion for the drive to fit in (for example, compare this to this). The AOA110 and AOA150 models are very similar in appearance and specs. I've even seen tutorials that involve soldering a SATA connector onto the AOA110's motherboard, essentially creating an AOA150 motherboard (right?) So, could I just swap out the motherboard in my netbook with the MBS0506001? (I'd post another link to the actual board but can't because of the spam prevention...) I assume I would also need to purchase and replace the bottom cover with a larger one and possibly get a hard drive caddy as well...? Thanks!

• How do I get VDPAU working with Ubuntu 9.1?

  What do I need to do to get MKV HD videos playing with VDPAU and also Blu-ray discs? Lots of people say you need to compile the latest MPlayer (which I haven't had luck doing) for VDPAU. I found an mplayer ppa that says it has VDPAU compiled into it so I'd like to use that. What packages do I need for playing MKV files and Blu-ray with the video decoding offloaded to my GPU? So far I haven't had any luck with any of the tutorials I've found. I'm just looking for a quick synopsis that will tell me what I'm looking for as I'm kind of shooting in the dark. (I didn't know what VDPAU was until a few days ago.)

  I read plenty of tutorials that describe how to install ADWS (ActiveDirectory Webservices) and Powershell. But I never saw any hint about installing ADWS on a SBS-2008 in order to work with Powershell and ActiveDirectory-module. I know, that I should use the SBS-Console to manage users, but there are tasks where it could be good to use AD as database of users and computers to loop through them (e.g. remote-commands on all workstations, find out user-lastlogon-times etc). Can anybody say, if it's ok (and supported?) to install AD-Powershell-Module and ADWS on a SBS-2008? Thanks

  I'm a little confused on the deployment process for Python. Let's say you create a brand new project with virtualenv source bin/activate pip install a few libraries write a simple hello world app pip freeze the dependencies When I deploy this code into a machine, do I need first make sure the machine is sourced before installing dependencies? I don't mean to sound like a total noob but in the PHP world, I don't have to worry about this because it's already part of the project. All the dependencies are registered with the autoloader in place. The steps would be: rsync the files (or any other method) source bin/activate pip install the dependencies from the pip freeze output file It feels awkward, or just wrong and very error prone. What are the correct steps to make? I've searched around but it seems many tutorials/articles make an assumption that anyone reading the article has past python experience (imo).

• Getting rid of Plesk on a VPS

  I've been using a relatively expensive VPS for hosting about 30 domains and I want to migrate to a cheaper one, without Plesk. Both use CentOS. My users will not care, they don't use Plesk anyway. But I will not be able to use it for creating new virtual hosts, FTP accounts etc. I'm not a commandline guru, esp. not in a server environment. Is there a free Plesk alternative for these purposes? • cannot mount remote partition using fstab/fuse

Now, I can connect through SSH and browser the files through an ad-hoc mount - but I would like to be able to do this automatically, and so had a look at fstab. my new entry in fstab is: remote_comp:/ /var/remote_comp fuse defaults 0 0 but testing with mount -a results in the following error: /bin/sh: remote_comp:/: not found I thought the problem was because I was trying to mount the root of the other computer, but even trying sub-directories result in the same error message.

• Dual boot Windows 7 with Windows 8- Dynamic Disk

  Its a long explanation. I have a HP Pavilion dm4 notebook. It has pre installed Windows 7 Home Pre. Recently, I tried to install Windows 8 developer preview on my notebook, but while installing, it only allowed me to insatll it on my primary Windows 7 drive I.e. drive C. I had kept 1 empty partition for Windows 8 but when I selectced that option, the next button at the bottom of the window just grey with some error saying Windows cannot boot from this drive....blah blah blah So I googled and found another way of doing it by VHD(virtual hard disk). This seemed to work but on restarting gave me "VHD_BOOT_INITIALIZATION_FAILED" error. After trying all possible ways for around 10 times, I gave up. I noticed that d only thing difference in d tutorials and my notebook is the Disk type. They all had Basic and I have Dynamic. Is that the reason m not able to boot Windows 8? Any suggestions?
