• Supervisord: how to append to $PATH

  I can't seem to figure out how to append to the default path in a supervisord program config. I can reset the path: environment=PATH="/home/site/environments/master/bin" But when I try: environment=PATH="/home/site/environments/master/bin:$PATH" I see that supervisord doesn't evaluate $PATH. Google wasn't a big help on this for some reason, I cannot believe I'm the first person to need this. Supervisord must have support for this, any idea what it is?

• Can't sync filesystem without reboot

  I'm having an issue with a linux server. Once a week the running mysql instance hangs and there is no way to fully stop it. If I kill it, it remains in zombie status and init does not reap its pid. The server is used for staging deployments and some internal tools, so it's not under heavy load. The only process constantly used id mysql and for this I think that it's the only process which suffer of this issue. I've also installed smartmontools and mcelog packages but none of them did report any issue. What can I do to track the cause of this issue? • Ubuntu wired network disconnected

  I am not able to establish a wired network connection between two computers on which I just installed Ubuntu 10.04. I am new to this environment. Unlike in the Windows environment, where it happens by just connecting them with a cable, Ubuntu keeps flashing a notification saying "Wired network disconnected". Am I missing a driver or something? I am able to connect to the wi-fi router without issue. The wired connection is just not working.

• Setup access to SAS RAID drives with NTFS partitions on CentOS Machine

  We have a Dell Poweredge 2900 system with Adaptec 39320A SCSI CONTROLLER CARD and 4 SAS hard drives attached, with NTFS partitions on them. We installed CentOS on the other raid array with a different controller and it is working fine. We are now trying to access the drives shown above and they are not being shown in /dev as sdb, etc. sda is the drive that we installed centos on and it has sda1, sda2, sda3, etc. The CDROM has been picked up as well. If I scan for scsi devices then the perc and adaptec controllers are both found. sg0 is the CDROM and sg2 is the centos installed, however I think sg1 is the other drive but I cannot see anyway to mount the partitions, as only the drive is listed in /dev.   Let's compare WinRT with .Net .Net .Net is the 13+ years evolution of COM. Three main parts of .Net are execution environment, standard libraries and supported languages.   I set JAVA_HOME in windows environment preferences echo %JAVA_HOME% C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jdk1.6.0_20 but then I try to run ant build and I get Perhaps JAVA_HOME does not point to the JDK. It is currently set to "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6" I think the registry key JAVASOFT is interfering with my environment variable, but I'm not sure how to fix this

• Capture Outgoing Email to One Mailbox or Account on Linux

  I am looking to see if anything exists that would allow us to capture all outgoing email on a machine -- for example, in a staging environment -- and drop it in a single place, which ideally would be something we could check with a mail client. Currently we're doing this on the software level (if environment is staging, rewrite address) which is a bit ugly and leads to errors. • Automating silent software deployments on Solaris 10

  Hello everyone. Essentially, the question I'd like to ask is related to the automation of software package deployments on Solaris 10. Specifically, I have a set of software components in tar files that run as daemon processes after being extracted and configured in the host environment. Pretty much like any server side software package out there, I need to ensure that a list of prerequisites are met before extracting and running the software. For example: Checking that certain users exists, and they are associated with one or many user groups. If not, then create them and their group associations. Checking that target application folders exist and if not, then create them with preconfigured path values defined when the package was assembled. Checking that such folders have the appropriate access control level and ownership for a certain user. If not, then set them. Checking that a set of environment variables are defined in /etc/profile, pointed to predefined path locations, added to the general $PATH environment variable, and finally exported into the user's environment. Other files include /etc/services and /etc/system. Obviously, doing this for many boxes (the goal in question) by hand can be slow and error prone. I believe a better alternative is to somehow automate this process. So far I have thought about the following options, and discarded them for one reason or another. 1) Traditional shell scripts. I've only troubleshooted these before, and I don't really have much experience with them. These would be my last resort. 2) Python scripts using the pexpect library for analyzing system command output. This was my initial choice since the target Solaris environments have it installed. However, I want to make sure that I'm not reinveting the wheel again :P. 3) Ant or Gradle scripts. They may be an option since the boxes also have java 1.5 enabled, and the fileset abstractions can be very useful. However, they may fall short when dealing with user and folder permissions checking/setting. It seems obvious to me that I'm not the first person in this situation, but I don't seem to find a utility framework geared towards this purpose. Please let me know if there's a better way to accomplish this. I thank you for your time and help.

  Good morning, I have a registry key that changes local users Internet Explorer LAN Settings to uncheck the "Automatically detect settings" tickbox. When I add this policy to the Terminal Servers user group it has no effect. I exported this key from my own registry after unticking the box. My computer runs Windows Vista Business Edition. Environment: We are using Server 2008 RC2 environment - two terminal servers with a session broker. Any idea's on how to get this working?

• Debug/step into a Linux boot

  Is there a way to watch Linux boot as though it was a program compiled with GCC on a Linux environment using the -g switch so, say, I can step through the entire boot sequence from GRUB onwards, choosing to step through at C source level or assembly when necessary/desirable, by using GDB or a GDB-like tool? I suspect it would require a virtual machine at least, to watch the boot on a host environment. Any elaboration on this topic of observing a boot would be appreciated!

• debugging JBoss 100% CPU usage

  We are using JBoss to run two of our WARs. One is our web app, the other is our web service. The web app accesses a database on another machine and makes requests to the web service. The web service makes JMS requests to other machines, aggregates the data, and returns it. At our biggest client, about once a month the JBoss Java process takes 100% of all CPUs. The machine running JBoss has 8 CPUs. Our web app is still accessible during this time, however pages take about 3 minutes to load. Restarting JBoss restores everything to normal. The database machine and all the other machines are fine, only the machine running JBoss is affected. Memory usage is normal. Network utilization is normal. There are no suspect error messages in the JBoss logs. I have set up a test environment as close as possible to the client's production environment and I've done load testing with as much as 2x the number of concurrent users. I have not gotten my test environment to replicate the problem. Where do we go from here? How can we narrow down the problem? Currently the only plan we have is to wait until the problem occurs in production on its own, then do some debugging to determine the cause. So far people have just restarted JBoss when the problem occurred to minimize down time. Next time it happens they will get a developer to take a look. The question is, next time it happens, what can be done to determine the cause? We could setup a separate JBoss instance on the same box and install the web app separately from the web service. This way when the problem next occurs we will know which WAR has the problem (assuming it is our code). This doesn't narrow it down much though. Should I enable JMX remote? This way the next time the problem occurs I can connect with VisualVM and see which threads are taking the CPU and what the hell they are doing. However, is there a significant down side to enabling JMX remote in a production environment? Is there another way to see what threads are eating the CPU and to get a stacktrace to see what they are doing? Any other ideas? Thanks!

  Hi People, I have an environment variable set in Windows as TEST=abc£ which uses Windows-1252 code page. Now when I run a perl program - 'test.pl', this environment value comes properly. When I call another perl code - 'test2.pl' from 'test1.pl' either by system(..) or Win32::process(..), the environment comes garbled. Can someone provide information why this could be and way to resolve it? The version of perl I am using is 5.8. If my understanding is right, perl internally uses 'utf-8', so the initial process - 'test1.pl' received it right from windows1252-utf-8. When we call another process, should we convert back to windows 1252 code page? -Kartlee

• App.Config Ignored After Pre-Build Event

  I have a solution with several projects and several developers, each with their own environment (of course). To manage connection strings between each environment, I have created several app.config files for each environment: app.config.dev, app.config.qa, etc. The pre-build event simply copies the app.config.$(ConfigurationName) to app.config. This pre-build event is done for each project in the solution, and the config string is included in each (including the test project). When I use the pre-build events to manage the app.config files, the connection string cannot be found. I can get the tests to run fine by 2 methods: 1. Do not use the pre-build events to manage the app.config file selection, and do it myself or 2. If I check out app.config and make it writable, then the pre-build events work just fine. We are using Visual Studio 2008. I'm down to my last grey hair here, any ideas? Thanks in advance!

• .exe generated in cygwin 1.7 is not running on cygwin 1.52

  Hi, A year back i have developed a small script in perl for a customer and developed its .exe using pp . we delivered .exe file along with basic cygwin(1.52) install files to run that .exe to customer. Now we got an enhancement in the script .we lost all dev environment for cygwin .Again we installed fresh cygwin with 1.7 version ,coded and generated .exe file.this file is not running in the customer environment who have cygwin 1.52.Just it will be balnk after executing the .exe we cannot ask customer to upgarde the test environment. what is other way to make it run .exe with cygwin dll 1.7 on cygwin 1.52. • Container Options in AWS Elastic Beanstalk

  We have deployed a java webapplication in Elastic Beanstalk with the minimum instance count 1 and max instance count 2 for Autoscaling. The custom AMI we are using is c1.medium with Sun JDK 6. The environment status changed to yellow and then red. After checking into the log file from the snapshot logs we found a exception - Caused by: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space. Assuming this could be one of the possible reason for the Environment failure. The settings that we have configured in the Environment Container option are Initial JVM Heap Size (MB) - 256M Maximum JVM Heap Size (MB) - 512m The maximum heap size the java virtual machine will ever consume, specified on the JVM launch command line using -Xmx. Maximum JVM Permanent Generation Size (MB) - 512m Should i increase the Heap size from 512m to more or is it fine.

• Performance analysis strategies

  I am assigned to a performance-tuning-debugging-troubleshooting task. Scenario: a multi-application environment running on several networked machines using databases. OS is Unix, DB is Oracle. Business logic is implemented across applications using synchronous/asynchronous communication. Applications are multi-user with several hundred call center users at peak time. User interfaces are web-based. Applications are third party, I can get access to developers and source code. I only have the production system and a functional test environment, no load test environment. Problem: bad performance! I need fast results. Management is going crazy. I got symptom examples like these: user interface actions taking minutes to complete. Seaching for a customer usually takes 6 seconds but an immediate subsequent search with same parameters may take 6 minutes. What would be your strategy for finding root causes?
