• Is there a "dual user check-in" source control system?

  Are there any source control systems that require another user to validate the source code "before" it can be checked-in? I want to know as this is one technique to make sure that code quality is high. Update: There has been talk of "Branches" in the answers, and while I feel branches have there place I think that branchs are something different as when a developer's code is ready to go into the main branch it "should" be checked. Most often though I see that when this happens a lead developer or whoever is responsible for the merge into the main branch/stream just puts the code into the main branch as long as it "compiles" and does no more checks than that. I want the idea of two people putting their names to the code at an early stage so that it introduces some responsibility, and also because the code is cheaper to fix early on and is also fresh in the developers mind.

• Is it safe to validate a URL with a regexp?

  In my web app I've got a form field where the user can enter an URL. I'm already doing some preliminary client-side validation and I was wondering if I could use a regexp to validate if the entered string is a valid URL. So, two questions: Is it safe to do this with a regexp? A URL is a complex beast, and just like you shouldn't use a regexp for parsing HTML, I'm worried that it might be unsuitable for a URL as well. If it can be done, what would be a good regexp for the task? (I know that Google turns up countless regexps, but I'm worried about their quality). My goal is to prevent a situation where the URL appears in the web page and is unusable by the browser.

  i just read some articles about these two theories, and i thought they have the similar goal, but DG is more about process management by follow some best practice. So my 1st question is about the difference between DG & DM. I'm confused. There're so many concepts around data management. Data quality, data security, data governance, data profiling, data integration, master data management, metadata management.... It seems like neither of them is EXACTLY separated, they're together. • Examples of both beautiful and ugly java code?

  I would like to demonstrate how difficult it is for a layman to identify high quality code from flawed code. I'm thinking of doing this with the help of two java methods. Both of the methods should look like they do the same, pretty simple thing. However one of them should have several kind of flaws, for example: iteration with array off by one error string concatenations causing lots of objects to be created (as opposed to StringBuffer in the "good" code, which looks more complicated) possibly null pointer exception (but it should not be trivial to spot) Those are just some examples, all kinds of other issues including bugs and performance related structures are highly appreciated. Methods should be around 10-20 lines of length, and the task they do should be something simple - preferably printing something in an iteration.

I dread having to deal with HTML, JavaScript etc. to build a high quality browser based user interface. I've got the full suite of Telerik controls. Is it possible to build a polished, somewhat feature rich browser UI while being sheltered from the archaic environment of HTML and JavaScript? • How can I reference only a portion of a TextArea's htmlText block?

  I have a number of very poor-quality pdf documents that look like 80's photocopies, which I'm rebuilding in Flash (Flex Builder 3 MXML application), representing paragraphs of text in TextAreas so that selected portions can be bold or italic, or whatever I need. I need a way to apply toolTips or event listeners to individual words within the block of text to link those words to a glossary. I'm perfectly happy to create a definition panel that is populated and made visible with a mouseOver, but don't know how to do it to just a portion of the text. Is there a good / clean / easy way to do this?

• What is the easiest straightforward way of telling which version performs better?

  I have an application, which I have re-factored so that I believe it is now faster. One can't possibly feel the difference, but in theory, the application should run faster. Normally I would not care, but as this is part of my project for my master's degree, I would like to support my claim that the re-factoring did not only lead to improved design and 'higher quality', but also an increase in performance of the application (a small toy-thing - a train set simulation). I have toyed with the latest VisualVM thing today for about four hours but I couldn't get anything helpful out of it. There isn't (or I haven't found it) a way to simply compare the profiling results taken from the two versions (pre- and post- refactoring). What would be the easiest, the most straightforward way of simply telling the slower from the faster version of the application. The difference of the two must have had an impact on the performance.   I want compress jpeg files using Java. I do it like this: Read the image as BufferedImage Write the image to another file with compression rate. OK, that seems easy, but I find the ICC color profile and the EXIF information are gone in the new file and the DPI of the image is dropped from 240 to 72. It looks different from the origin image. I use a tool like preview in OS X. It can perfectly change the quality of the image without affecting other information. Can I done this in Java? At least keep the ICC color profile and let the image color look the same as the origin photo?

  The C++0x standard is on its way to being complete. Until now, I've dabbled in C++, but avoided learning it thoroughly because it seems like it's missing a lot of modern features that I've been spoiled by in other languages. However, I'd be very interested in C++0x, which addresses a lot of my complaints. Any guesstimates, after the standard is ratified, as to how long it will take for major compiler vendors to provide reasonably complete, production-quality implementations? Will it happen soon enough to reverse the decline in C++'s popularity, or is it too little, too late? Do you believe that C++0x will become "the C++" within a few years, or do you believe that most people will stick to the earlier standard in practice and C++0x will be somewhat of a bastard stepchild, kind of like C99?

  So ... I have an image loaded into an NSBitmapImageRep object, so I am able to examine the contents of specific pixels via a two dimensional array. Now I want to apply a couple of "transformations" to the image, in preparation for some additional processing. If I was manipulating the image manually, in Photoshop, I would: Rotate the image Crop a portion of it and discard the rest Apply a "threshold" transformation (which essentially converts the image to black and white, based on the threshold value I provide) Resample the image to shrink it down a bit (which, although losing some image quality, will speed up the subsequent processing) (not necessarily in that order) Are there objective C methods available to facilitate these specific image manipulations, with the data in the NSBitmapImageRep object? If so, can someone point me to some good examples?

  I'm wondering how Instapaper (bookmarklet that saves text) might generate URLs for their bookmarklet. Mine has a script src of something similar to www.instapaper.com/j/AnJHrfoDTRia The quality of these URLs is that they need to never collide, and not be really guessable (so other people can't save to your account). I know a simple approach might be to MD5 their email address (presumed to have been checked on signup for uniqueness), but then I'd end up with a super long string. This isn't a huge issue, but I'm wondering what techniques there are for shorter GUIDs that won't collide too often (this is obviously the tradeoff, but 12 characters above is pretty short in my opinion)

  What I'm talking about is: Is it possible that under certain circumstances the CPU "buggs" and suddenly responses 1+1=2? In which parts of the computer can that happen (HDD, RAM, Mainboard)? What could be the causes? Bad quality? Overheating? Does that even happen? When yes, how frequently? If everything is okay with the CPU (not a single fault in production, good temperature), can that still happen sometimes? What would be the results of, let's say one to three wrong computations? This is programming related as it would be nice to know if you can even rely on the hardware to return the right results.

  Are there any frameworks/libraries that provide servlets/filters etc that handle reencoding on the fly of images. interpret the accept headers and output the file, reencoding into the new format if necessary by checking the actual format of the original image file. provide a low and high quality version of an image. re encode an image into new dimensions. width and height parameters might query string parameters. I could create versions of the file in all the formats, at upload time but the seems overkill. I would rather lazily create the rencoded file and stick it in a cache if it gets served again etc.

  I'm trying to essentially get something like this where I can see clear ripples at the base but otherwise it's like a Gaussian: This is kind of unsatisfactory because the ripples aren't very noticeable, it has a very gritty quality that obscures the image a bit, and if you move the graph so that it's just in 2D (so it looks like a circle) I'm not even sure if it's quite like how it should be (the concentric circles seem to be more evenly spaced in the real thing).   Hi, Could some one possibly clarify this for me. In the MVC paradigm, the idea is to keep the controller as thin as possible, it is also true that the model is the bit that communicates with data sources such as the database, XML-RPC etc and this is where the business logic should go. Is the POST and GET data a 'data source' and should that kind of data be handled by the model or should it be by the controller. I would normally call a method in the model and pass it the post data, the data would be quality checked by the controller and the model method would simply do the insertion or whatever. Should it be though that controller just calls the model method if a post has occured and it is responsible for sanity check, data checks etc.

How do I transform those into a opaque pixel p? Does the alpha channel go in the high byte or the low byte? I googled up the documentation but it only states that: Each pixel is stored on 4 bytes. Each channel (RGB and alpha for translucency) is stored with 8 bits of precision (256 possible values.) This configuration is very flexible and offers the best quality.
