• Web Crawling Sites with Javascripts or web forms

  Hello everyone, I have a webcrawler application. It successfully crawled most common and simple sites. Now i ran into some types of websites wherein HTML documents are dynamically generated through FORMS or javascripts. I believe they can be crawled and I just don't know how. Now, these websites do not show the actual HTML page. I mean if I browse that page in IE or firefox, the HTML code does not match what's actually in the IE or firefox. These sites contain textboxes, checkboxes, etc... so I believe they are what they call "Web Forms". Actually I am not much familiar with web development so correct me if I'm wrong. My question is, does anyone in similar situation as I am now and have successfully solved these types of "challenges"? Does anyone know of a certain book or article regarding web crawling? Those that pertains to these advanced type of websites? Thanks.

• int vs size_t on 64bit

  Porting code from 32bit to 64bit. Lots of places with int len = strlen(pstr); These all generate warnings now because strlen() returns size_t which is 64bit and int is still 32bit. So I've been replacing them with size_t len = strlen(pstr); But I just realized that this is not safe, as size_t is unsigned and it can be treated as signed by the code (I actually ran into one case where it caused a problem, thank you, unit tests!). Blindly casting strlen return to (int) feels dirty. Or maybe it shouldn't? So the question is: is there an elegant solution for this? I probably have a thousand lines of code like that in the codebase; I can't manually check each one of them and the test coverage is currently somewhere between 0.01 and 0.001%.

• When does printf("%s", char*) stop printing?

  In my class we are writing our own copy of C's malloc() function. To test my code (which can currently allocate space fine) I was using: char* ptr = my_malloc(6*sizeof(char)); memcpy(ptr, "Hello\n", 6*sizeof(char)); printf("%s", ptr); The output would typically be this: Hello Unprintable character Some debugging figured that my code wasn't causing this per say, as ptr's memory is as follows: [24 bytes of meta info][Number of requested bytes][Padding] So I figured that printf was reaching into the padding, which is just garbage. So I ran a test of: printf("%s", "test\nd"); and got: test d Which makes me wonder, when DOES printf("%s", char*) stop printing chars?

• How to improve INSERT INTO ... SELECT locking behavior

  In our production database, we ran the following pseudo-code SQL batch query running every hour: INSERT INTO TemporaryTable (SELECT FROM HighlyContentiousTableInInnoDb WHERE allKindsOfComplexConditions are true) Now this query itself does not need to be fast, but I noticed it was locking up HighlyContentiousTableInInnoDb, even though it was just reading from it. Which was making some other very simple queries take ~25 seconds (that's how long that other query takes). Then I discovered that InnoDB tables in such a case are actually locked by a SELECT! http://www.mysqlperformanceblog.com/2006/07/12/insert-into-select-performance-with-innodb-tables/ But I don't really like the solution in the article of selecting into an OUTFILE, it seems like a hack (temporary files on filesystem seem sucky). Any other ideas? Is there a way to make a full copy of an InnoDB table without locking it in this way during the copy. Then I could just copy the HighlyContentiousTable to another table and do the query there.

  I am looking to improve front-end performance of my application, so I used YSlow tool in Firefox. When I ran this tool for my app, in the YSlow grade tab it showed up a issue 'Grade F on Compress components with gzip'. Seems to be that we need to compress the files(js, css) while sending from the server to client to increase the server response time. My app is a Struts Java application. Can anyone let me know how to compress and send the front end UI files(JS,CSS) from server so that the response time increases and my pages lot fastly? What are the things that I need to do to compress these files in Java at server?

• Bad interpreter: No such file or directory

  I'm working through Michael Hartl's tutorial trying to learn Rails for the first time, and I've run into some issues. I recently reinstalled the whole Rails Installer because I had apparently inadvertently deleted some important files. Now, when I try running a test I get the following error: sh.exe": /c/Program Files (x86)/ruby-1.9.3/bin/bundle: "c:/Program: bad interpre ter: No such file or directory I checked my PATH and attempted to use the solution outlined here: Bundle command not found. Bad Interpreter ..but putting quotation marks around "C:\Program Files (x86)\ruby-1.9.3\bin" didn't do anything for me. I ran $ rails -v and got the following output: $ rails -v ?[31mCould not find multi_json-1.3.6 in any of the sources?[0m ?[33mRun `bundle install` to install missing gems.?[0m So then I tried running $bundle install and got the following issue again: Tom@TOM-PC /c/sample_app (updating-users) $ bundle install sh.exe": /c/Program Files (x86)/ruby-1.9.3/bin/bundle: "c:/Program: bad interpre ter: No such file or directory I'd really appreciate any help -- I've spent 5+ hours today trying to get back on track and am still at a loss. • Masks and transparency

  Hi, I'm fairly new to Shoes and ran into two problems. First I want to set a mask using a partially transparent png, like this: mask do image "images/stencilMask.png" end Is this possible somehow or can only vector shapes be used? Apart from that, I noticed a small bug(?) when trying to set a transparent color as a stroke on any kind of text, like this: title "Hello", :stroke => rgb(1.0, 0.0, 0.0, 0.5) The transparency simply isn't applied. I'm not sure how the result of getValue is returning that, I would've thought doing A && B && C && D would have returned true, rather than the value of D.

• Launching my deployed my app gets "has stopped working" error. How do I debug this?

  I deployed a VB.Net app and ran it and I get 'AppName has stopped working" "Windows is checking for a solution to the problem" along with a Cancel button under Windows 7. Under XP I am only getting the option to Send the error report to Microsoft or not. There is no apparent way to hook into a debugger. I am not getting any exception data. I have put msgboxes at the very start of my code and they are not hit so it is failing before any of my code is even executing. I have checked all dependencies that I can think of. I developed the app on VS2008 Windows 7 and deploying to Windows 7 and WinXP. I need some advice - how do I debug this? Thanks, Brad

Explain why this is a poor choice of compression function, and how it could be improved. I basically just say that the function could be improved by changing the value for p (or 9027) to an prime number and choosing an other constant for a (or 3) could also help.

• Does pdksh (public domain korn shell) support associative arrays?

  I recently ran up against a wall doing some bash shell programming where an associative array would have solved my problems. I googled about features of the Korn shell and learned that it supports associative arrays, so I installed Cygwin's pdksh (public domain korn shell). However, when trying to create an associative array in the prescribed manner (typeset -A varName), I received the following errors, so I'm beginning to suspect pdksh does not support associative arrays. ./find_actions.ksh: line 2: typeset: -A: invalid option typeset: usage: typeset [-afFirtx] [-p] name[=value] ... • Detecting Infinite recursion in Python or dynamic languages

  Recently I tried compiling program something like this with GCC: int f(int i){ if(i<0){ return 0;} return f(i-1); and it ran just fine. When I inspected the stack frames the compiler optimized the program to use only one frame, by just jumping back to the beginning of the function and only replacing the arguments to f. And - the compiler wasn't even running in optimized mode. Now, when I try the same thing in Python - I hit maximum recursion wall (or stack overflow). Is there way that a dynamic language like python can take advantage of these nice optimizations? Maybe it's possible to use a compiler instead of an interpreter to make this work? Just curious!

• Enforcing a query in MySql to use a specific index

  Hi, I have large table. consisting of only 3 columns (id(INT),bookmarkID(INT),tagID(INT)).I have two BTREE indexes one for each bookmarkID and tagID columns.This table has about 21 Million records. I am trying to run this query: SELECT bookmarkID,COUNT(bookmarkID) AS count FROM bookmark_tag_map GROUP BY tagID,bookmarkID HAVING tagID IN (-----"tagIDList"-----) AND count >= N which takes ages to return the results.I read somewhere that if make an index in which it has tagID,bookmarkID together, i will get a much faster result. I created the index after some time. Tried the query again, but it seems that this query is not using the new index that I have made.I ran EXPLAIN and saw that it is actually true. My question now is that how I can enforce a query to use a specific index? also comments on other ways to make the query faster are welcome. Thanks

• applying padding after using css reset

  As it turns out I don't know CSS. I ran into a brick wall after using Eric Meyer's CSS reset (http://meyerweb.com/eric/tools/css/reset/) I have a table with this style table.home_right_top, .home_right_top table, .home_right_top { background-color: #F2F2F2; width: 100%; padding: 10px 20px 15px 20px; } but the padding is not applied to the table at all and I cannot figure out why. I am happy that I see the same behavior on all the browsers including IE7 and IE8 but I don't see any padding. Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong here? Thanks.

• AS3 TextField - unwanted carriage return when setting value to ""

  I have an input TextField and have a KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWN even listener on the stage to listen for the Keyboard.ENTER event. The event listener adds the entered text to an array or whatever, and then clears the TextField. The problem is that when the Enter key event fires and the TextField value is set to "", it leaves a carriage return in the TextField and the cursor positioned on the second line. WTF? I've been coding AS2 and AS3 for a LONG time and have never ran into this before. Am I losing my mind? • Why does this window object not have the eval function?

  I ran into an interesting (?) problem in the YUI rich edit demo on IE. When looking at the window object for the content editable frame used as the browser I see that the eval function is undefined (by running the following). javascript:alert(document.getElementById("editor_editor").contentWindow.eval) This only happens on IE (I checked on IE6 and IE8), and it doesn't happen on Firefox or Chrome. All the other window functions and properties seem to be in order, now I realise that eval is not really defined on the window but on the global object but my understanding was that in browsers the window is the global object (also eval does appear on all other windows so why not on this one?). Does anyone know if this is a know bug/limitation in IE and how I can get to eval in the context of the global object of this frame? (I need the side effects to be available to anything running from within this frame).

• Naming convention for the primary key in a Table

  Hi all, I am learning the Model relationship types in cakephp. I have built twotables and in one of the Table A, I got these fields in it: Table A {postID, topic, content} Table B {replyID, content, postID} And when I ran the web page, a bunch of error related to SQL popped up saying that cakephp couldn't find post_id. It is weird that I have already declared the $primaryKey to be using postID in the tableA.php under Models folder, but cakephp seemed want me to change the ID field to post_id instead of postID, because the error disappeared after I have changed the primaryKey to post_id. ANy ideas?

• Can't Add LINQ to SQL classes to projects in VS2010

  I just ran into something in Visual Studio 2010 RC that wasn't previously happening (like, yesterday). No software changes here, but I did run into some muck yesterday when compiling that required a reboot. I am unable to add LINQ to SQL classes to any project through the add dialog. I have created ASP.NET web sites, ASP.NET MVC projects - both of these as 'templated' and as 'empty' - and there appear to be no templates installed or available. I have made sure that the project targets the 4.0 Framework. I can easily add a new database and the ADO.NET entity framework templates are there. As a workaround I can copy a DBML file to my project, delete all tables and sprocs, update the connection string and use the leftover shell (the designer works fine like this), but it's a pain. Has anyone else had their templates drop? Figured out how to reinstall them?

• How to force oracle to use index range scan?

  Hi, all. I have a series of extremely similar queries that I run against a table of 1.4 billion records (with indexes), the only problem is that at least 10% of those queries take 100x more time to execute than others. I ran an explain plan and noticed that the for the fast queries (roughly 90%) Oracle is using an index range scan (on my created), while on the slow one, it's using a full index scan. Is there a way to force Oracle to do a an index range scan? Thanks!

• TypeInitilazationException When Getting an NHibernate Session

  I’ve run into what appears to be an NHibernate config problem. Basically, I ran up a simple proof of concept persistence integration test using NUnit, the test simply querys an Oracle database and successfully returns the last record received by the underlying table. However, when the assemblies are taken out of the NUnit test environment and deployed as they would be for an actual application build, my call for an NHibernate session results in a ‘TypeInitializationException’ whilst executing the code line: sessionFactory = New Configuration().Configure().BuildSessionFactory() The application is a vb.net console app running against an Oracle 9.2 database, using a ‘coding framework’ published on the web by Bill McCafferty entitled 'NHibernate Best Practices with ASP.NET' (pre S#harp Architecture).   Quick question about Ruby forking - I ran across a bit of forking code in Resque earlier that was sexy as hell but tripped me up for a few. I'm hoping for someone to give me a little more detail about what's going on here. Specifically - it would appear that forking spawns a child (expected) and kicks it straight into the 'else' side of my condition (less expected. Is that expected behavior? A Ruby idiom? • linux display drivers

  I've run into a major display problem on newly installed fedora 11, on my 6 years old pc which runs a pentium4 2.4 GHz processor, 1 gb ddr ram, intel 845 motherboard with integrated graphics card. When i open an image or play a video, my complete screen turns garbled. I simply cannot make out whats on my screen. With difficulty i have to close the image/video window and move around the folder window to clean the screen image. Is it because of my display drivers? How can i fix it? I also ran into mp3 plugins and flash issues which i was able to resovle. I'm new to linux, the sole purpose of isntalling it on my old pc was to learn linux but this display problem is frustrating me. Thanks, Salman

• GetOleDbSchemaTable Foreign Keys on Sql Server 2005

  I'm trying to get the Foreign Keys for a table in my SQL Server 2005 database. I'm using the GetOleDbSchemaTable function right now: DataTable schemaTable = connection.GetOleDbSchemaTable( OleDbSchemaGuid.Foreign_Keys, new object[] { null, null, null, "TABLE" }); This pulls back the right foreign keys, the only problem is that the UpdateRule and DeleteRule are set to "No Action". If I browse to the same table in SSMS I can see that my DeleteRule is "Set NULL". Does the GetOleDbSchemaTable function not return the proper foreign key rules ? Has any one else ran into this problem ?

• How to figure out optimal C / Gamma parameters in libsvm?

  I'm using libsvm for multi-class classification of datasets with a large number of features/attributes (around 5,800 per each item). I'd like to choose better parameters for C and Gamma than the defaults I am currently using. I've already tried running easy.py, but for the datasets I'm using, the estimated time is near forever (ran easy.py at 20, 50, 100, and 200 data samples and got a super-linear regression which projected my necessary runtime to take years). Is there a way to more quickly arrive at better C and Gamma values than the defaults? I'm using the Java libraries, if that makes any difference.

• Trouble Extending Network with Apple Airport Extreme (PC won't connect with Ethernet)

  So I have an Apple Airport Extreme base station that I use to create a wifi network at my house. But on a separate story from this station i have a PC (running Windows 7) that does not have a wireless card. Luckily, I have another Airport Extreme Base Station, so I figured I'd have my second station "extend" the existing network. I asked Apple if this was possible, which it was, and walked through the setup wizard to extend the network. Then I ran an ethernet cable from the Station to my PC. However the PC refuses to connect to the Internet. It says it can access the network, "Unidentified Network (Limited Connectivity)", but that's it. It tells me that my computer does not have an IP address. I tried running the cable to another computer (my Apple MacBook Pro) and got a similar error. Any thoughts?
