• How much effort is involved in moving a WordPress site to a private server? [on hold]

  I work in tech, but am on the business side. I have a WordPress site that I would like to move to a personal server and associate with a new domain name. I already have a server (actually, a friend is letting me use his) and the domain name. A friend-of-a-friend, who claims to be an IT pro, has agreed to help, but now is asking for what feels like a lot of money for what he says is a pretty time-intensive job. This doesn't sound right to me, so I thought I would ask here: Would it take months or even days to move the content, and why would it have to be moved in stages? The blog currently uses a basic template and has about 1000 posts. How much effort is really involved in moving a WordPress site from one server to another? Can anyone explain the process? Would it just make more sense to point the domain name at the existing WordPress blog, and pay the nominal yearly fee? I appreciate any answers you can provide.

• SIMPLEST way to set up password protection for a static site, with basic admin UI?

  I have a static site. I would like the simplest approach to password protecting a directory, with a basic admin UI for adding/removing users. I will have so few users that I don't care about performance. I don't care if it's PHP or Django or whatever, I just want a complete software package. Apache basic auth isn't good, because you can't log out. Nor is there a UI for adding users. I tried throwing everything behind Django auth and serving the files through Django. However, Chrome treats all my text/css headers as text/plain, so I don't get any stylesheets showing. I can't use mod_xsendfile on my server because I can't reconfigure Apache to add new modules. I think this approach is overkill anyway. I can try configuring Nginx's X-Accel-Redirect, however that requires implementing all the Django code for auth myself, and I'd prefer an existing solution. However, this is my backup plan. Is there a code package that implements authentication with basic admin for a static site?

• What to do if you find a vulnerability in a competitor's site?

  While working on a project for my company, I needed to build functionality that allows users to import/export data to/from our competitor's site. While doing this, I discovered a very serious security exploit that could, in short, perform any script on the competitor's website. My natural feeling is to report the issue to them in the spirit of good-will. Exploiting the issue to gain advantage crossed my mind, but I don't want to go down that path. So my question is, would you report a serious vulnerability to your direct competition, in order to help them? Or would you keep your mouth shut? Is there a better way of going about this, perhaps to gain at least some advantage from the fact that I'm helping them by reporting the issue? Update (Clarification): Thanks for all your feedback so far, I appreciate it. Would your answers change if I were to add that the competition in question is a behemoth in the market (hundreds of employees in several continents), and my company only started a few weeks ago (three employees)? It goes without saying, they most definitely will not remember us, and if anything, only realize that their site needs work (which is why we entered this market in the first place). I confess this is one of those moral vs. business toss-ups, but I appreciate all the advice.

• How are certain analytics metrics (time on site, etc.) usually distributed?

  I'm not sure if I've come to the right place to ask this question, but I'm gathering some information for a research project. We're trying to design an experiment that'll heavily involve web analytics, and I'm trying to figure out some sensible values of mean +/- standard deviation for the following visitor-level (i.e., visitor 1 spends 2 minutes on site, visitor 2 spends 1 minute -- mean 1.5 +/- 0.71...) metrics: time spent on site page views If time allowed, we would put up the sites and gather the information ourselves, but we have a grant deadline coming up. I realize that even though these the distributions of these quantities are probably going to be heavily skewed towards zero, we'll need some reasonable figures or estimates of these figures in order to do sample size calculations, etc. Anyway, I'm not sure where else I'd turn, and I certainly have had a difficult time finding these values in the prior literature. If someone could direct me to a paper with the right information, or if you have these figures on hand (perhaps taken directly from your logs!) -- that would be amazing, and I'd love to hear from you. • How should I structure a site with content dependent on visitor type (not user)?

  I have a website that displays different content depending on two selections made by a visitor: Whether they are a teacher or student, and their learning level (from 4 options). Everything is public and they don't need to authenticate to access the content. Depending on their selection, different content is displayed across the whole site, other than a contact and about page. The tone of the language changes depending on whether the visitor is a student or teacher and the materials available on each page also change depending on the learning level, however in all cases, the structure of the site is identical. Currently I'm using a cookie to store the visitor's selections and render different content appropriately, so I have a single set of URLs which display different content depending on the cookie, with one of the permutations as default. I appreciate this is far from ideal, but what is the better option? Would I be better using a distinguishing segment for each selection, for example: http://example.com/teacher/lv3/resources/activities http://example.com/teacher/lv4/resources/activities http://example.com/student/lv4/resources/activities etc. What is the most sensible way to handle this situation?

• Best setup/workflow for distributed team to integrated DSVC with fragmented huge .NET site?

  So we have a team with 2 developers one manager. The dev server sits in a home office and the live server sits in a rack somewhere handled by the larger part of my company. We have freedom to do as we please but I want to incorporate Kiln DSVC and FogBugz for us with some standard procedures to make sense of our decisions/designs/goals. Our main product is web-based training through our .NET site with many videos etc, and we also do mobile apps for multiple platforms. Our code-base is a 15 yr old fragmented mess. The approach has been rogue .asp/.aspx pages with some class management implemented in the last 6 years. We still mix our html/vb/js all on the same file when we add a feature/page to our site. We do not separate the business logic from the rest of the code. Wiring anything up in VS for Intelli-sense or testing or any other benefit is more frustrating than it is worth, because of having to manually rejigger everything back to one file. How do other teams approach this? I noticed when I did wire everything up for VS it wants to make a class for all functions. Do people normally compile DLLs for page-specific functions that won't be reusable? What approaches make sense for getting our practices under control while still being able to fix old anti-patterns and outdated code and still moving towards a logical structure for future devs to build on?

• ASP.Net MVC 3: multiple versions of the site without changing of URL, is it possible?

  Our website is written in ASP.NET MVC 3 and we want to change a feature in the core functionality of the site. The problem is not every client can be moved to this new version/format (because of some technical inner restrictions) so it means that we need to keep 2 versions of the same functionality (backend and frontend) simultaneously. We don't want our clients to worry about URLs, so the ideal solution would be keep the same URL but redirect clients to the different versions. The information about clients is stored in database. So the moment when user (client) logs in we know which version of site we should show. I'm thinking about routing and areas but I'm not sure if it's possible for example to have 2 areas with the different versions of the same application. Or is it possible to load the assemblies on the fly? After user is logged in we can decide if (s)he should be redirected to the new or old version. As far as all the clients have been moved to the new version we don't need this system more. How can I do this in ASP.NET MVC?

However I'd like to add this newly created site to an existing application pool. • PHP e-commerce site talking to internal database for stock / ordering?

I'm working on an e-commerce site (either bespoke with PHP, or using Drupal/Ubercart), and I'd like to investigate the site interacting with an internal (filemaker) database we use to manage stock and orders. Currently we manually transfer orders from the web site to our own database, and the site does not check or record changes in stock. My plan to allow the 2 to interact is as follows: Make the internal database available externaly on a machine with a fixed IP Allow external access from the site only Connect to the internal database using ODBC (or similar) Use simple queries to check stock / record stock changes / record order details Am I missing something here as this sounds quite straight forward?   I've inherited a high-traffic site that loads some Ext javascript files and I'm trying to trim some bandwidth usage. Are Ext libraries necessary for development only or are they required for the finished site (I've never used Ext.) The site loads ext-base.js, ext-all-debug.js, expander.js, exteditor.js. It appears that expander.js and exteditor.js have some site specific code, so they should stay? But what about ext-base.js and ext-all-debug.js? Am I reading this correctly - are base and debugging libraries necessary for a live site?

• How do you remove a site from Sharepoint Designer?

  I would like to use Sharepoint Designer 2007 as an html editor. I have a web site with a lot of files in a folder on my hard drive. I do not want Sharepoint Designer to make a web site out of this. I just want to use Sharepoint Designer to edit the html files, locally. If I ever make a mistake and click on a tool for Sites, such as summary or report, Sharepoint Designer will decide that my folder is now a web site. From that point on, Sharepoint Designer is painfully slow whenever I open a file contained in the folder that Sharepoint decided is my web site, instead of being instantaneous like it was before. I can resolve this situation by renaming the folder containing my web site -- everything gets fast again. I can also fix it by uninstalling and reinstalling Sharepoint Designer. Neither of these is a good solution. Is there a place in Sharepoint Designer, or in application data or the registry that I can kill off the Sharepoint Designer web site that's associated with a folder on my hard drive?

• PHP site keeps opening to blank page, no errors.

  First, the premises: PHP loaded on IIS6 on Win2003 STD R2 SP2, PHP_5213 using FastCGI, MySQL_5145. Customer sent me the site files, which I unzipped to C:\InetPub\wwwroot\<site root>, then I created a new site in IIS, pointed to <site root>, added test.php to the site files for testing and it works, but visiting index.php produces a blank page with no errors. The readme.txt file present makes reference to application.php and explains root folder var and sets it to a non-existent file. I don't know PHP syntax, but I tried several logical changes with zero results. At this point I'm not even sure if that is the problem anymore. With PHP, MySQL & site debugging have put in over 20 hours. Still confused, I have resorted to heavy drug use and purchased a small firearm, loaded with a single round (even this seemed to take an inordinate amount of time). I've given up all hope. Someone please help save a new server and/or old administrator.

I'm thinking about this from a web developer's perspective, such that someone else is creating the actual design and content for the site. So while usability and content may be more important than the platform, you the programmer have little say in that. What you do need to worry about is that your implementation of the platform is stable, performs well, is secure, and meets any other business goals (like not cost too much, take too long to build, and rank as well with Google as the content supports). Think of this from the perspective of a developer who's done some work for intranet-type applications in a fairly trusted environment, and is about to have his first shot and putting out a potentially popular site for the entire big bad world wide web. Also: I'm looking for something more specific than just a vague "web standards" response. I mean, HTML, JavaScript, and CSS over HTTP are pretty much a given, especially when I've already specified that you're a professional web developer. So going beyond that, Which standards? In what circumstances, and why? Provide a link to the standard's specification. This question is community wiki, so please feel free to edit that answer to add links to good articles that will help explain or teach each particular point.

  Hi there, In my email today I got the following: The My Site of is scheduled for deletion. As their manager you are now the temporary owner of their site. This temporary ownership gives you access to the site to copy any business-related information you might need. To access the site use this URL: http://mysites.freud.com/personal/ I click on the link and I can see that there site is there. I do not want there site to be deleted at all what can I do. When I search for the user using the PeopleSearchBoxEx web part the user comes up but when I click on there name I get the error: Server Error in '/' Application. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- User not found. • Accessing a share point site using the object model.

  Hi I am trying to access a share point site using the SP object model from a console application. I am trying to do something like this.. SPSite site = new SPSite(sitePath) //Operations go here This works fine when the share point site and the console app are on the same machine. However when the console app and the site are on different machines, I get an error "The Web application at "http://server/url" could not be found. Verify that you have typed the URL correctly. If the URL should be serving existing content, the system administrator may need to add a new request URL mapping to the intended application" Here are the things that I have already done: 1) I have tried accessing the site via both IP address as well as machine name, assuming that it could be a DNS resolution issue. 2) Initially I impersonated using a farm admin account, still i could not access. Then I added myself as the farm admin, still no joy. 4) The site is accessible via IE. So it is not a permission issue I guess. 5) I have tried almost all the solutions suggested by various links obtained by googling the error message. I am trying this on share point 2010. A similar issue occurs on 2007 also. Sometimes its kind of frustrating to do SharePoint development , since I get the feeling of stumbling from one error to the next, with no clue as to what could be wrong and the error messages not being helpful in the least :(
