• Beginner question about vertex arrays in OpenGL

  Is there a special order in which vertices are entered into a vertex array? Currently I'm drawing single textures like this: glBindTexture(GL_TEXTURE_2D, texName); glVertexPointer(2, GL_FLOAT, 0, vertices); glTexCoordPointer(2, GL_FLOAT, 0, coordinates); glDrawArrays(GL_TRIANGLE_STRIP, 0, 4); where vertices has four "xy pairs". This is working fine. As a test I doubled the sizes of the vertices and coordinates arrays and changed the last line above to: glDrawArrays(GL_TRIANGLE_STRIP, 0, 8); since vertices now contains eight "xy pairs". I do see two textures (the second is intentionally offset from the first). However the textures are now distorted. I've tried passing GL_TRIANGLES to glDrawArrays instead of GL_TRIANGLE_STRIP but this doesn't work either. I'm so new to OpenGL that I thought it's best to just ask here :-) Cheers!

• How do I include Implementation and Usage Documentation in one file

  There are two types of documentation. One type, the Implementation Documentation, contains information about specific implementation of a construct (eg. Class, Method, etc.). It is targeted to the future me, maintainer, debugger and so on. And there is Usage Documentation, containing information how to use a provided api. It does not contain information about specific implementation and is targeted to users of the api. How do I include both of them in one file? (Or do I include both of them in one file? And if not, what type belongs into the source file?) Are there special techniques, using java-doc and/or best practices?

• Why is chunk size often a power of two?

  There are many Minecraft clones out there and I am working on my own implementation. A principle of terrain rendering is tiling the whole world in fixed size chunks to reduce the effort of localized changes. In Minecraft the chunk size is 16 x 16 x 256 as far as I now. And in clones I also always saw chunk sizes of a power of the number 2. Is there any reason for that, maybe performance or memory related? I know that powers of 2 play a special role in binary computers but what has that to do with the chunk size?

  Migrating to another virtual machine program can be intimidating. if you already have your virtual machines set up they way you like them, you don’t necessarily have to install them from scratch – you can migrate your existing virtual machines. VirtualBox and VMware use different virtual machine formats, but each supports the standard Open Virtualization Format. Convert your existing virtual machine to OVF or OVA and you’ll be able to import it into another virtual machine program. Unfortunately, this may not always work perfectly, as VirtualBox and VMware both seem to use slightly different OVA/OVF implementations that aren’t entirely compatible.   When you interrupt the work on some code (be it because you have to work on something else or go on vacation or simply because it is the end of the day), once you close that Visual Studio project, what is your preferred way to remember what you want to do next when you start working on that code again. Do you set a Visual Studio bookmark or do write down something like // TODO: continue here next time? Maybe you have a special tag like // NEXT:? Do you put a sticky note on your monitor? Do you use a cool tool or Visual Studio plugin I should know? Do you have any personal trick that helps you find the place in your code where you left off the last time you worked on your code?

• Problem with text deletion in vi editor

  When I am writing C code on the vi editor, I am not able to use the backspace keys or my arrow keys to delete or navigate through lines. Some unexpected special characters occur on the screen that is on middle of my code and I am not able to delete them also. If I use my delete key, the whole code gets deleted. I have tried both insert mode using 'i' and 'a'. I am able to manage this situation for C programming by using the text editors but when I am creating LeX and yacc programs, I find this awkward. Can you please help me with this?

• Need advice for approach for a web-based app that loads excel worksheet but exposes only the charts

  I'm looking for suggestions on the Visual Studio approach to take for a web application that is in the conceptual stage. My environment has a lot of tools: Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard 64bit Visual Studio 2010 Professional Edition Sharepoint 2010 Server Enterprise Edition SQL Server 2008 R2 Office 2010 Professional I know I will need this app to retrieve data from a database (or a web service - not sure exactly at this point). The data needs to be placed in an Excel workbook dynamically. The app will need to have a nice user interface (standard web controls - perhaps with some Javascript effects). The Excel ribbon and worksheet grid will need to be hidden. Some web control(s) will cause the Excel chart(s) to be rendered. I am thinking this sounds like Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) so as to leverage .Net and hide Excel. Can you offer suggestions regarding: One ASP.Net Web App Project One Class Library Project for Excel or perhaps which one of the several different Excel 2010 project types (addin, template, document) Would Excel Services for Sharepoint be useful (or required) ? I am feeling a little overwhelmed with so many choices at this early stage of conceptualizing the app. Can you suggest some ideas for this sort of thing? Also, I am a bit more experienced with C# but I've read VB.Net is better for work with the Excel object model. What are general advises with regard to tool choice and overall approach tradeoffs?

• Why would a web site keep my signup information for a limited time only?

  I have just created account at (some web service, well, actually it was Transifex, a localization service). Registration form requested typical things: accont name, e-mail adress, password (twice), and, optional company name and phone number. What confused me was this sentence on confirmation page (the one right after submitting the form): We will store your signup information for 7 days on our server. Can anybody explain what does this mean? What exactly they are referring to by "signup information", if it's something that should be kept for only 7 days? Or is my account going to be destroyed after that time? (Well, that could make sense for some special services, but not for this one.)

However, if I want to import mailing list to this software, I need to add the address one by one, which is a waste of time. Does iKode provides mass account import ability? • Application toolkits like QT versus traditional game/multimedia libraries like SFML

  I currently intend to use SFML for my next game project. I'll need a substantial GUI though (RPG/strategy-type) so I'll either have to implement my own or try to find an appropriate third party library, which seem to boil down to CEGUI, libRocket, and GWEN. At the same time, I do not anticipate doing that many advanced graphical effects. My game will be 2D and primarily sprite-based with some sprite animations. I've recently discovered that QT applications can have their appearance styled so that they don't have to look like plain OS apps. Given that, I am beginning to consider QT a valid alternative to SFML. I wouldn't have to implement the GUI functionality I'd need, and I may not be taking advantage of SFML's lower-level access anyway. The only drawbacks I can think of immediately are the learning curve for QT and figuring out how to fit game logic inside such a framework after getting used to the input/update/render loop of traditional game libraries. When would an application toolkit like QT be more appropriate for a game than a traditional game or multimedia library like SFML?

• Custom extensible file format for 2d tiled maps

  I have implemented much of my game logic right now, but still create my maps with nasty for-loops on-the-fly to be able to work with something. Now I wanted to move on and to do some research on how to (un)serialize this data. (I do not search for a map editor - I am speaking of the map file itself) For now I am looking for suggestions and resources, how to implement a custom file format for my maps which should provide the following functionality (based on MoSCoW method): Must have Extensibility and backward compatibility Handling of different layers Metadata on whether a tile is solid or can be passed through Special serialization of entities/triggers with associated properties/metadata Could have Some kind of inclusion of the tileset to prevent having scattered files/tilesets I am developing with C++ (using SDL) and targetting only Windows. Any useful help, tips, suggestions, ... would be appreciated!

• My First robots.txt

  I'm creating my first robots.txt and wanted to get a second opinion on it. Basically I have a FTP setup on my board for some special users to transfer files between each other and I do NOT want that included in the search by the bots. I also want to point to my sitemap which gets auto generated by a PHP page. So here is what I have, what else should I include, and if I need to fix anything with it? Also, it's linking to xmlsitemap.php because that generates the sitemap when called. My goal is to allow any search bot crawl the forums to grab meta data. • Network setup not working. Can't connect to the Internet in Ubuntu

  I want to know how to set-up network in 12.04 using automatic settings (DHCP). I installed Ubuntu, but I can't seen to see the network connection. What can I do? My notebook has no wireless only cable. The cable will not fit in. How can I plug it in? Do I need a special Cable? There is no router can I fix this myself, or should I call a technician? Also can I use USB to connect to the network/Internet? please can you help Thank you jamel
