  I have a method in a class trying to return a pointer: <?php public function prepare( $query ) { // bla bla bla return &$this->statement; } ?> But it produces the following error: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '&' in /home/realst34/public_html/s98_fw/classes/sql.php on line 246 This code, however, works: <?php public function prepare( $query ) { // bla bla bla $statement = &$this->statement; return $statement; } ?> Is this just the nature of PHP or am I doing something wrong?

• Entity Framework - SaveChanges with GUID as EntityKey

  I have a SQL Server 2008 database table that uses uniqueidentifier as a primary key. On inserts, the key is generated on the database side using the newid() function. This works fine with ADO.NET. But when I set up this table as an entity in an Entity Framework 4 model, there's a problem. I am able to query the entity just fine, but when creating a new entity and invoking SaveChanges() on the context, the generated uniqueidentifier on the database is all zeros. I understand there was an issue with EF v1 where this scenario did not work, requiring creating the GUID on the client prior to calling SaveChanges. However, I had read in many places that they were planning to fix this in EF 4. My question -- is this scenario (DB-side generation of uniqueidentifier) still not supported in EF4? Are we still stuck with generating the GUID on the client?

• Disable cache in Silverlight HttpWebRequest

  My Silverlight4 app is hosted in ASP.NET MVC 2 web application. I do web request through HttpWebRequest class but it gives back a result previously cached. How to disable this caching behavior? There are some links which talks about HttpWebRequest in .NET but Silverlight HttpWebrequest is different. Someone suggested to add unique dummy query string on every web request, but I'd prefer more elegant solution. I also tried the following, but it didn't work: _myHttpWebRequest.BeginGetRequestStream(new AsyncCallback(BeginRequest), new Guid()); In fact, by setting browser history settings it is possible to disable caching. • Is Visual Studio 2010 WebDev WebServer (Cassini) 64-bit compatible?

  I'm now developing on Visual Studio 2008 on a 64-bit OS (Windows Server 2008 64-bit). While the apps I write are 64-bit capable, as is IIS7, the built-in ASP.NET Development Server (aka Cassini aka WebDev.Webserver.exe) runs as 32-bit. This brings up a plethora of issues, such as: 32-bit and 64-bit applications have separate HKLM\Software registry homes There are 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the SQL Server Client Network Utility Other fun surprises I haven't discovered but I'm sure will spring up While I am finding workarounds for most of this, I have to ask... Does anyone who has played with the Visual Studio 2010 preview bits on 64-bit architecture know if the development web servers can handle 64-bit, and if so, are there options for which mode to run it in? (Like a checkbox in the project properties, for instance)

• Nested/Child TransactionScope Rollback

  I am trying to nest TransactionScopes (.net 4.0) as you would nest Transactions in SQL Server, however it looks like they operate differently. I want my child transactions to be able to rollback if they fail, but allow the parent transaction to decide whether to commit/rollback the whole operation. A greatly simplified example of what I am trying to do: static void Main(string[] args) { using(var scope = new TransactionScope()) // Trn A { // Insert Data A DoWork(true); DoWork(false); // Rollback or Commit } } // This class is a few layers down static void DoWork(bool fail) { using(var scope = new TransactionScope()) // Trn B { // Update Data A if(!fail) { scope.Complete(); } } } I can't use the Suppress or RequiresNew options as Trn B relies on data inserted by Trn A. If I do use those options, Trn B is blocked by Trn A. Any ideas how I would get it to work, or if it is even possible using the System.Transactions namespace? Thanks

  Hi, I want to publish some data as XML from a SQL Server database using a WCF service to a location on our content delivery network. (www.somelocation-on-cdn/myxml.xml) This data which is published as XML will have to be updated at an interval of time. I was thinking of writing a WCF service to return the data required, create a RSS reader to update / write the XML file to a location on the content delivery network. Is this approach correct? Can I use WCF REST instead of WCF SOAP As a further enhancement I want to be to use this WCF Service to make cross domain calls using JSONP from our website Thanks

• Dynamic Data Associate Related Table Value?

  I have create a LINQ-to-SQL project in Visual Studio 2010 using Dynamic Data. In this project I have two tables. One is called phones_extension and the other phones_ten. The list of columns in phones_extension looks like this: id, extension, prefix, did_flag, len, ten_id, restriction_class_id, sfc_id, name_display, building_id, floor, room, phone_id, department_id In phones_ten it looks like this: id, name, pbxid Now, I'd like to be able to somehow make it so that there is an association (or inheritance?) that essentially results in me being able to make a query like phones_extension.ten and it gives me the result of phones_ten.name. Right now I have to get phones_extension.ten_id and then match that against phones_ten.id - I'm trying to get the DBML to handle this translation automatically. Is this possible?

  I am currently gathering some technology requirements for a site that will be a social network based. I don't want to re-invent the wheel so i am looking for some type of SDK or collection of tools that can provide me with a way of creating/managing a social network. I understand that no framework will probably fit my exact needs so I am also looking for a flexible/extendable framework. An example extension point would be allowing the user to provide sub networks, maybe a global network that could be sub classified as work and friends. Beyond that it would also be nice to somehow be able to import contacts from other networking sites (Facebook, Linked In, etc). My current technology suite will consist of the following: IIS 7.0 WCF Data Services SQL Server 2006 ASP.NET front end. If there is any more information you may need please let me know.

• Supplementary Developer Laptop

  I'm looking to buy a laptop with the following specs for a developer. The goal will be to have a development machine supplementing the devs desktop. During work hours the dev will be on a beefy desktop. For working while on the go: trains, client sites, code camps, it would be nice to have a machine which can run Visual Studio 2008 without needing to remote desktop into their primary machine. What do you think is the lowest cost laptop meeting this need? Here are the specs I have in mind: SSD drive 64GB-doesn't need to be huge, most data is stored on servers. Will need to fit Windows 7, IIS, SQL Server, and Visual Studio 2010. RAM-3GB processor =Pentium Core 2 duo Screen size = 14 inches. OS doesn't matter. It will be paved with Windows 7 Ultimate optical drive omitted would be a plus. weight and battery life aren't so important because the machine will be plugged in almost all the time.

• python pdb not breaking in files properly?

  Hi Folks, I wish I could provide a simple sample case that occurs using standard library code, but unfortunately it only happens when using one of our in-house libraries that in turn is built on top of sql alchemy. Basically, the problem is that this break command: (Pdb) print sqlalchemy.engine.base.__file__ /prod/eggs/SQLAlchemy-0.5.5-py2.5.egg/sqlalchemy/engine/base.py (Pdb) break /prod/eggs/SQLAlchemy-0.5.5-py2.5.egg/sqlalchemy/engine/base.py:946 Is just being totally ignored, it seems, by pdb. As in, even though I am positive the code is being hit (both because I can see log messages, and because I've used sys.settrace to check which lines in which files are being hit), pdb is just not breaking there. I suspect that somehow the use of an egg is confusing pdb as to what files are being used (I can't reproduce the error if I use a non-egg'ed library, like pickle; there everything works fine). It's a shot in the dark, but has anyone come across this before? Thanks, /YGA

• In NHibernate, how do I combine two DetachedCriteria instances

  My scenario is this: I have a base NHibernate query to run of the form (I've coded it using DetachedCriteria , but describe it here using SQL syntax): SELECT * FROM Items I INNER JOIN SubItems S on S.FK = I.Key The user interface to show the results of this join allows the user to specify additional criteria: Say: I.SomeField = 'UserValue'. Now, I need the final load command to be: SELECT * FROM Items I INNER JOIN SubItems S on S.FK = I.Key WHERE I.SomeField = 'UserValue' My problem is: I've created a DetachedCriteria with the 'static' aspect of the query (the top join) and the UI creates a DetachedCriteria with the 'dynamic' component of the query. I need to combine the two into a final query that I can execute on the NHibernate session. DefaultCriteria.Add() takes an ICriterion (which are created using the Expression class, and maybe other classes I don't know of which could be the solution to my problem). Does anyone know how I might do what I want?

  I need to extract Voip log from a D-Link router, so I've setup a little python script that executes a command in this router via telnet. My script does a "cat /var/log/calls.log" and returns the result, however... it also sends non-important stuff, like the BusyBox banner, etc... How can I ignore lines from 1 to 6 and the last 2 ?   Hi folks, Got a problem I need help with. Basically I'm gonna develop a form (part of a bigger web app) that lists a load of clients and there business contact, tech contact 1, and tech contact 2. The idea is rapid data entry. So one form shows each client with their contacts in dropdowns and I we can change each one then click a save button to do a mass save. the database looks like this: tblClient ClientID ClientName BusinessContact Tech1 Tech2 My idea was to use a repeater to format the data like this: Client Business Contact Tech1 Tech2 Client2 Business Contact Tech1 Tech2 What I'm stuck on is how to do the mass update? • How to set up asp.net membership with a web application instead of a web project

  Originally the site was set up using a Website project which ended up not working for various reasons. I'm trying to make it work as a web application project and have started from the ground up with a new project. I have looked online and not found a good resource that explains some of the "simple" things that are taken for granted when it's a website project. Some things specifically: How am I specifying the external sql database that the membership site should use? Is it possible to set privileges on a folder and require authentication when accessing that content or does each page need to check for itself? Once again, I'm looking for some resources I can use as I move forward as opposed to answers to specific questions (although those are welcome as well).

  Hi all, I keep receiving an error with the following code. I am trying to make a function that will format a field (content=0.0032) into a varchar/percent (content=0.32%). At the moment i'm just trying to get format to work, and it throws up an error "Error Code : 1064 You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'len);" The function definition for "Format" is "Format(X,d)" where x is the number and d is the number of decimal places to round too. Enterprise Manager’s compliance library is filled with a wide variety of standards based on Oracle’s recommendations, best practices and security guidelines. These standards can be easily associated to a target to generate a report showing its degree of conformance to that standard. ( To get an overview of  Database compliance management in Enterprise Manager see this screenwatch. ) Starting with release 12.1.0.4 of Enterprise Manager the compliance library will contain a new standard based on the US Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) for Oracle Database 11g. According to the DISA website, “The STIGs contain technical guidance to ‘lock down’ information systems/software that might otherwise be vulnerable to a malicious computer attack.” In essence, a STIG is a technical checklist an administrator can follow to secure a system or software. Many US government entities are required to follow these standards however many non-US government entities and commercial companies base their standards directly or partially on these STIGs. You can find more information about the Oracle Database and other STIGs on the DISA website. The Oracle Database 11g STIG consists of two categories of checks, installation and instance. Installation checks focus primarily on the security of the Oracle Home while the instance checks focus on the configuration of the running database instance itself. I have previously created projects with Linq-To-Sql or with Ado.Net. My plan for this project is to use VS2010 and the new EF4 framework. It would be great to hear other programmers options about development with Entity Framework Pros and cons from previous experience? Do you think EF4 is ready for production?
