• How to enable extended logging for classic asp on IIS7 on Windows 2008 R2

  I had to deploy an application that was not written by me onto the above configuration. It is a rather bizarre hybrid of asp.net and classic asp and it's the classic asp that is proving troublesome. The client is having problems with 500 Internal Server Errors appearing and I can see some of these in the logs but I only get the error code and the page name but little else. What I would like to see is the actual error message to at least give me an idea what is going on (or not going on, depending on your point of view) I don't want to display errors in the browser as I don't know the code well enough and this could (for all I know) display some crazy code where the db password is hard-coded into the site.

• Set up linux box for hosting a-z

  I am in the process of reinstalling the OS on a machine that will be used to host a couple of apps for our business. The apps will be local only; access from external clients will be via vpn only. The prior setup used a hosting control panel (Plesk) for most of the admin, and I was looking at using another similar piece of software for the reinstall - but I figured I should finally learn how it all works. I can do most of the things the software would do for me, but am unclear on the symbiosis of it all. This is all an attempt to further distance myself from the land of Configuration Programmer/Programmer, if at all possible. I can't find a full walkthrough anywhere for what I'm looking for, so I thought I'd put up this question, and if people can help me on the way I will edit this with the answers, and document my progress/pitfalls. Hopefully someday this will help someone down the line. The details: CentOS 5.5 x86_64 httpd: Apache/2.2.3 mysql: 5.0.77 (to be upgraded) php: 5.1 (to be upgraded) The requirements: SECURITY!! Secure file transfer Secure client access (SSL Certs and CA) Secure data storage Virtualhosts/multiple subdomains Local email would be nice, but not critical The Steps: Download latest CentOS DVD-iso (torrent worked great for me). Install CentOS: While going through the install, I checked the Server Components option thinking I was going to be using another Plesk-like admin. In hindsight, considering I've decided to try to go my own way, this probably wasn't the best idea. Basic config: Setup users, networking/ip address etc. Yum update/upgrade. Upgrade PHP/MySQL: To upgrade PHP and MySQL to the latest versions, I had to look to another repo outside CentOS. IUS looks great and I'm happy I found it! • updating drive mapping GPO programmatically using powershell

  I have a Group Policy in a domain that have lots of drive mapping settings. I would like to change the path for a lot of these servers in this gpo with powershell if possible. I know i could do this via the GPMC, but would prefer to do it programtically. I have looked at the grouppolicy powershell module from microsoft (get-gpo and friends) but i only seem to be able to change registry entrys and permissions on the policys, not the actual path for the drivemapping. any ideas?   In line with the question about Best sysadmin accident, what's the worst accident you've been involved in? Unlike the previous question, I mean "worst" in the sense of most system damage or actual harm to people. I'll start with mine: We have two remote wiring closets that are at the end of a 100-foot corridor which has a metal grate for the floor. After we had Cat6 cable installed, the contractors cleaned up all the debris that dropped through the grating to the concrete 3 feet below. A co-worker and I entered the corridor to check on the progress one day but were distracted and didn't notice that a piece of grating had been moved aside. My buddy stepped into air and his chest slammed into the steel crossbar. He was winded and sore enough to take a couple days off, but luckily the steel beam had rounded edges and the size of the opening was such that he didn't smack his head into it or the floor below. Obviously we learned that areas where the floor is partially removed need to be flagged.

• Renaming Z drive in DOSBox

  DOSBox makes a virtual drive, which it names Z:, for storing utility stuff on. Clearly they're trying to stay out of your way, so you can do whatever you want with the C: drive. Swell, I understand that. But I've got some old database accessing software I really, really want to run which assumes it lives on the Z drive. So I need to get DOSBox's Z called anything else. (C would be fine with me.) I've seen mentions that it is possible, but no actual indication of how to do it. Anything that gets the job done is appreciated.

• choosing the right SSL certifcate

  Hi All, We're looking to purchase some SSL certificates to secure the login pages of ecommerce sites. It is not required to secure the actual payment process as this is protected by a third party with its own verisign certificate. rapidSSL looks like a good (and cheap) option but a salesperson has told me that they are only suitable for "test sites" and recommended that we use one that is 4 times the cost. Can anyone make any recommendations about what we should be looking for and what we should consider? Thanks.

• Is there a usable HTML web gallery template for Lightroom 2?

  The built-in HTML gallery unfortunately generates invalid HTML markup so its looks are likely more coincidence than proper design. That aside its JavaScript usage prevents using the middle mouse button to open an image in a new tab. A look at the few free HTML gallery templates out there shows me that there seems to be little interest in building an actual HTML gallery which doesn't use JavaScript. Most of them are using JS to build fancy animations or in-page popup boxes containing the image. This may be nice for some people but at least one person who looks at my images is on dial-up and quickly opening all images in individual tabs to let them load and then close the connection is very nice to have there. Anyone seen such a gallery template; i. e. simple, plain HTML without JS? My HTML/CSS skills aren't that good that I can develop such a thing on my own, unfortunately.

  i'm doing some research on how browsers support TLS-SRP (RFC5054). I know that TLS-SRP is implemented in GnuTLS, OpenSSL as of release 1.0.1, Apache mod_gnutls, cURL, TLS Lite and SecureBlackbox. I don't find any fresh source of information, only this from 2011: http://sim.ivi.co/2011/07/compare-tls-cipher-suites-for-web.html I'm testing them manually at the moment, but as far as i know nobody seems to support it. My interest is then in understanding if browsers are planning to support these ciphersuites in the future, apart from the current state. • Mystery "users" email group

  This morning, our entire company received a spam message sent to [email protected], where "ourdomain.on.ca" is our actual domain. There is a distinguished name that this could correspond to: CN=Users,DC=ourdomain,DC=on,DC=ca Looking at the attributes though, there is no mail, no proxyAddresses, no signs that there is a mailbox configured there. I did some LDAP queries, searching for: (proxyAddresses=smtp:[email protected]) ([email protected]) But am not seeing any records. (I also search for known email addresses to ensure the tree was being searched properly.) We are running Exchange 2003. Is there another place to look for group email addresses? Is it possible that the distinguished name is being automatically translated to an email address?

• Wrapping text in an opened file in vim

  I want to soft wrap text in Vim to 90 columns per line. I want soft wrap so that it doesn't affect actual text by adding line break characters. Here's is what I tried: // Opened a file with lots of text and ran the following: set wrap set tw=90 set linebreak Running the commands doesn't change anything about the view at all. It soft wraps at the end of the window. I have used "Soft Wrap" in TextMate by Command-Option-W to get the same effect, and want to know how to get it work on Vim.

  I am currently developing a project which is mission-critical. The actual domain name is registered with 1 & 1 and I plan on purchasing DynDNS Custom DNS service (which has 5 different geographical locations for DNS) and then another secondary DNS service to make sure my DNS is as failover safe as possible. Does it matter that the registration is with 1 & 1 - are they a weak link in the chain? All I really use them for is to say that DynDNS is my primary DNS nameserver and then my secondary DNS is my other nameserver. I can transfer the registration to DynDNS - Im just not sure if it really matters or not. Thanks

• GMail, IMap and Outlook: Speeding it up?

  I finally set up Outlook to use GMail and IMAP, but unfortunately, it's extremely slow. The reason, I think for this is because I have 14300 emails in my inbox. And I have no intention to delete them. So, my questions are: Is there a way to archive old messages, in order to speed things up? Any other suggestions on how I can speed it up? Note: It's only really slow when I click on "Send and Receive". The actual synchronization is what takes forever.

• Best way to bring a system down with a "maintenance" message?

  What's the best way to bring down an apache2/tomcat6 setup for maintenance? Specifically, apache2 can stay running, but tomcat needs to restart to accomplish a number of tasks. My initial thought is to change the root directory in the httpd.conf VirtualHost entry to point to a new location, then issue a force-reload command to direct traffic away from the actual tomcat application. After some period of time, I perform tomcat maintenance, switch the VirtualHost entry, and force-reload to begin directing traffic back. Is there a better way to do this? I'm looking to start work on a rather extensive web application, and my deployment procedure right now involves shutting everything down and bringing everything back up. Is there a better way to do this than what I've proposed?

  Hi, I'm about to perform an experimental upgrade on my CentOS 5 server. If the upgrade fails, I want to be able to back out the changes to the filesystem. This scenario seems similar to the example in Section 3.8 of the LVM HOWTO for LVM2 read-write snapshots - but the example is rather lacking in actual how-to. 1) How would I commit the changes, merging them back into the original partition? 2) How would I revert the changes, restoring the filesystem back to its original state? Should I assume that I'll need to restart several services, if not outright reboot? 3) Is it possible to snapshot only certain directories on a partition, or is it a partition-wide operation?   I've came across RAID products that also list JBOD (just a bunch of disks) mode and 2LUN mode. What the heck is 2LUN mode? I could not find a description; the closest thing seems to be LUN 'logical unit number' but I don't get the 2LUN thing. UPDATE 1 This is what Wikipedia has to say about JBOD: JBOD (derived from "just a bunch of disks"): an architecture involving multiple hard drives, while making them accessible either as independent hard drives, or as a combined (spanned) single logical volume with no actual RAID functionality. So JBOD can actually mean two different (albeit related) things. Answer of Guest says 2LUN means no spanning. Does this suggest that 2LUN would simply mean the JBOD-variant with no span?

• MX Records - go to two servers?

  Right now I have a single mail server for IMAP. Let's say I want to introduce Exchange but not all users will be on it. Some users will be on my "legacy" IMAP, others on the "new" Exchange. Is it possible to "split up" your users (from the same e-mail domain) on two services like this? What would the MX records look like? My guess is that this isn't possible, but thought I'd ask. By the way, I realize that Exchange can offer IMAP and all that, but my question is more about splitting users across services and the MX records. The actual protocols above are only examples.

• Docbook: Centralized glossary, where each document includes only terms which appear in it?

  Trying to figure out if this (or something similar) is possible. I'm working with a collection of technical documents, all written in DocBook. The documents each contain many acronyms, technical terms and other jargon, so we need to include a glossary with each of them. The ideal situation would be this: I have a central glossary.xml file which contains a glossentry item (or similar) for each such term; then, each of the documents uses that glossary file, but only prints out the terms which appear IN that document. So, each document has its own glossary printed at the end, but the actual glossary entries are stored centrally. Is that doable?

• Recovering files that do not appear in the Recycle Bin, but are in the $Recycle.bin folder on external drive

  Problem: I have an NTFS external drive with a $Recycle.bin folder on the root (E:/$Recycle.bin/) that has about 70gb worth of data. For whatever reason, the folder is no longer a hidden system file and no Windows machine I have used the drive on will show the files in the actual Recycle Bin. What I Want To Do: I want to atleast view the recycle bin files from this external, and all of the help articles I have read just talk about deleting the folder all together. I plan on reformating the drive, but first I need to see if there are any important deleted files. What Didn't Work: Recuva - didn't see any of my files Resetting the external's Recycle Bin via command prompt and moving the old $Recycle.bin files into the new external $Recycle.bin folder (I didn't read this anywhere, just made it up on my own)

  I've got haproxy set up with keepalived for load balancing and ip failover of a percona cluster, and since it works great I'd like to use the same lb / failover for another service/daemon. I've configured haproxy this way: listen my_service 0.0.0.0:4567 mode tcp balance leastconn option tcpka contimeout 500000 clitimeout 500000 srvtimeout 500000 server host1 xxx.xxx.xxx.xx1:4567 check port 4567 inter 5000 rise 3 fall 3 server host2 xxx.xxx.xxx.xx2:4567 check port 4567 inter 5000 rise 3 fall 3 The load balancing works fine, but the service sees the IP of the load balancer instead of the actual IPs of the clients. In http mode it's quite easy to have haproxy pass along the remote IP, but how do I do in tcp mode? This is critical due to the nature of the service I need to load balance. Thanks! Vito

I'm sort of a VMWare noob and am not sure where to go from here because I couldn't find a lot of documentation on the VMWare website, and the forums didn't seem to have any posts about it with actual answers. • Vista laptop won't connect to airport extreme

  Our previous router died, and to replace it I procured an apple airport extreme. My mac, my wrt54gs (with ddwrt acting as a bridge) and a linux machine have had no problem connecting to the wireless. None of the wired clients are having a problem obviously. The problem is one of my roommates can not connect. That's not strictly true. He can connect to the network, and will, infact, get a dhcp lease. However he cannot get any packets out. Can't ping the router, can't access any web sites, nothing. However he's fine if we switch to an unsecured network. Which is obviously not acceptable. The airport only allows for 'wpa/wpa2 personal' and 'wpa2 personal' (and of course the enterprise versions there of) I keep reading about this problem in multiple spots on the web, but never see any actual answers... Anyway the laptop: hp/compaq cq50-215nr vista home premium wireess card: atheros 5007 airport is simultaneos dualband II
