• Windows Boot disc to save files?

  Somehow after updating my legit windows 7 OS with no pirated or mod software on my PC i was welcome to a black screen. I popped in my ghost disc and copied the files i need to an external HD. IIRC windows 7 disc can do that too. Problem with the way i did it on ghost was it excepted me to select 1 file (an HD disc image) so i couldnt select multiple folders to move. Also when i did move i had no idea if it finished or how long it would take. My linux live cd couldnt access the HD. Anyways, is there a disc i can use to easily copy files from my laptop to my external HD? I think ghost, windows 7 and windows server all allow me but is there one that is better suited to copy files?

• Windows 7 changes desktop icon location when switching from External Monitor to Internal Monitor (laptop)

  I have a Windows 7 Laptop, and lately its been acting really weird with my 1080p Monitor. When I get home from school, Ill plug my screen in, and close my laptop lid (which makes the laptop treat the Monitor as the primary and only screen). However it will move my desktop icons! This also happens when I remove / unplug the screen, as shown in the pictures. I hate this, as Im the kinda person who's use to every icon being in a set spot, and so am use to their location. Its a massive hassle to try and move the icons back to their original spot. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? • How do I change the .bash_history file location?

  I'm running CentOS 6.x and want to move the .bash_history to a different location. The home directories of my users are (because I run a VPS) in /var/www/vhost/<domain>.<tld> which is FTP accessible (and it should be). Because of this, I have changed the AuthorizedKeysFile for SSH connections out of the normal ~/.ssh/authorized_keys since FTP connections would easily be able to locate them. At the same time I want to move the .bash_history file to /home/%u/.bash_history where %u is the current user.

I'm a VBA rookie and tried just replacing the Set Messages line with this which resulted in a Run-time error '13': Type mismatch which I think refers to a mismatch of the Dim Messages and the Set Messages commands. I've tried using different Dim definitions with no luck. I'm guessing that someone who knows VBA will see the way to do this right away. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

• Are changes to the date and time logged in Windows Server?

  We've recently gone into British Summer Time in the UK. One of our techs, anticipating the move, decided to change the time on one of our servers. Bad move. This server happens to have a number of time-based incidents logged to it, and as a result of this change, the times are unreliable. I'm trying to build a concrete timeline of when the clock was changed so I can apply corrective action to our time-based records. My question is:- Does Windows record date and time changes anywhere so I can get hard, actual data? Thanks

• DOS application to allow remote management of files over serial link

  Harken back to the days of DOS. I have an embedded DOS handheld device, and I'm looking for a tool to manage the files stored on it. I picture an application I can launch on the device that opens COM1 up for commands to get a directory listing, send/receive files via x/y/zmodem, move/delete files, and create/move/delete directories. A Windows application can then download a recursive file listing and then manage those files (for example, synchronizing with a local directory). Keep in mind that this is DOS -- 8.3 filenames, 640K of RAM and a 19200bps serial link (yuk!). I'd prefer something with source in case we need to add additional features (for example, the ability to get a checksum of a file for change detection). Now that I've written this description, I realize I'm asking for something like LapLink or pcAnywhere. Norton no longer sells DOS versions of pcAnywhere and LapLink V for DOS seems pricy at $50. Are you aware of any similar apps from those good old days?

• How is the 137GB limit counted in Virtual PC (two systems on one disk)?

  I have a dual boot (Win7, XP) physical machine on my old computer which I want to virtualize and move to my new one. So I've uninstalled everything that I can and run shrink from RescueCD (used GParted). Now I have two about 80GiB partitions with a gap between them, so still this seem to be above the given limit. Still the resulting VHD (made with Disk2vhd) is much below the limit (about 110GiB) and both partitions are below the limit. So my question is - is it failing due to the limitations of disk size for VPC or is failing simply because it's a dual boot system. Or maybe it would work if I would move partitions to be close to each other (the gap between them is about 171GB and the whole physical disk is 1TB)?

I have started running out of space on my SSD drive, and I found that about 12% of used space is in my installer folder (holds the .msi files for all the programs that I have installed) I am looking for two things: A way to move this (or any) folder via symlink. Ideally, some powershell function that I could use to just designate a folder, a destination, and the symlink would be created in the original (pointing to the destination) In this particular case, a registry change that would allow the location to be move would also be helpful, but I would still prefer solution 1. How can this be done?

  Hi- I am trying to obtain a certificate and move it to a remote server. It is a report server which requires its own certificate for SSL but is not running IIS. I have a server running IIS 6 so i created a fake website to create a csr, obtained a certificate from a 3rd party, then processed and installed the cert on the fake website. I want to then move the certificate to a remote server. when it asks for the server name and credentials i supply them, hit next, then get the error, 'class not registered'. any ideas? Thanks -Ed

• Any way to release focus on a KVM guest in virt-manager without having to click Ctrl_L + Alt_L?

  Is there a way to move my mouse in and out of a KVM guest in virt-manager without having to click to gain focus of the window and release focus by pressing Ctrl_L + Alt_L? EDIT #1 The guest VM is Win2008R2. I've tried this on a CentOS 5, 6, and Fedora 14 box running various versions of virt-manager and KVM and they all exhibit this behavior. EDIT #2 I just tried the solution recommended by @tpow and that appears to be the issue. Manually adding a tablet input device resolves the problem and I can now move the mouse in and out of the KVM guest without having to gain focus first.

I set up a two way trust between the two domains, but now I want to move their servers into our forest, while keeping the domain name of blah.com. Is this possible?   I want Thunderbird 3.1.1 to automatically move old messages to archive. The definition of "old" should vary by folder. E.g., messages in the "Meeting minutes" folder should get archived after 7 days, messages in "newsletters" can get archived after 2 days, but messages in a folder for a course I am taking should not get automatically archived, because I am going to manually move the entire folder to archive once the course is over. I tried making a filter which moves all messages older than 7 days to an archive folder. It worked when I ran it manually. But I don't know how to make Thunderbird run it automatically once a day on the folder "Meeting minutes". Any ideas how to do it, with or without filters?

  I have a spreadsheet with several cells in one column. Each cell has identical conditional formatting: In 1 cell value equal to ='Y' In 2 cell value equal to ='N' In 3 cell value equal to ='?' Is it possible to use Google Apps or another Cloud Service as a replacement for a Windows Domain Controller (replacing my whole AD infrastructure)? Specifically, I want to remove our dependence on a local Windows Server; currently it acts as a Domain Controller with File and Print Services. I'd like to seamlessly replace this server with something based on hosted applications. I do not just want to move the server to a dedicated or collocated server. I have yet to figure out how to piece together printer/etc sharing. If anyone has any insight into this, it would be appreciated. The goal is to eventually move all my servers to the cloud then write up a case study on the whole affair.

  I'm using Outlook 2010 with Exchange 2007. I am moving emails from my Deleted Items folder to a user-created folder. When I move a "low" number of messages, say a few hundred or less, the operation completes successfully. When I move a "large" number of messages (in this example it's over 800) I get the message shown in the screenshot below. If I click Yes, a new email is generated and has links to all the emails I selected in the Attachment field. When I cancel that email, not only have the messages not moved but they appear to be deleted entirely. What does the message mean and why does it get presented? Why does clicking Yes do the behavior I described above?

Instead of separating it on multiple slides, I made an animation that moves it up using animation path, so that text hidden at bottom appears while text on top goes off screen. However, I need more move animations to reaveal more text (the text takes more than 2 screens). This means, I need two (or more) animation paths (of the same length) and I want them to move obejct from position, where the last path has left it.   I have two 150GB SATA drives in hardware RAID 0, on which I have my C: (Win XP) and D: (installed apps). I'm migrating to Windows 7, but I want to keep my XP system until I've got it all running smoothly. So I want to: break the RAID move C: and D: to one of the drives (there's enough room) use the other drive for Win 7 boot into one or the other Clearly I can't move C: and D: after breaking the RAID, so I'm assuming I need to image the two partitions first, then break the RAID and restore the images to one of the drives. So my questions are: Is this possible? If so, what would be a good (free) imaging/restore tool? How do I ensure that the drive will boot after restoring the images? What sort of gotchas should I look out for? If there's a better solution than this, I'd be grateful for suggestions. Thanks!

  I got a new MacBook Pro (insurance payout) and passed my old one (previous generation MacBookPro 2008) on to a staff member whose MacBook Pro died. I used carbon copy to move my data to the new laptop but couldn't do the same with her move as the older Macbook wouldn't allow it as it was on an old OS. Ended up just migrating her software onto my old MBP. Now however, they both have the same admin identities and her computer is synching with my mobile me account. Can I change the administrator identity and save all her applications? I am hoping that I don't have to wipe and reinstall everything to change her computers identity.

I am looking to implement a data retention policy at my workplace. As our amount of data grows it puts a large strain on our backup routines. • Migrating to a new server

  I was asked by a client to move a website to a new server. Normally I would make a local copy by downloading it and then uploading it to the new server after making any necessary configurations of course. This particular client has like 1 million images ranging up 1MB and I still haven't found a solution as to how to move these properly. I have tried zipping them on the server first but the file gets too big and it seems to just stop. Anyway, the client told me he can set up a "portal" so I don't have to download and re-upload the files. I have never heard of this no can I find what this is. • Amazon - install a complete server on EBS

  is it possible to install a full working OS with a webserver, db, and all needed stuff on an EBS storage? If so, would I immediatly gain benefits by mounting this EBS on a better instance? Otherwise (if I cannot install a complete image, or if you don't think it's reasonable) can I install the software so that I only need to mount the EBS on a new instance to have it working? I purchased a Medium Reserved Instance, but when there will be the need to get a better instance I'd like to move the whole db/website, I'd simply buy a better instance and then attach the EBS. Is it possibile? I'm imaging about it like an hard drive that would be mounted on a better server. Of course, more RAM would allow me to increase caching limits, and that's ok, but I don't want to reinstall anything (the main website is a magentocommerce and it's pretty painful to move it). P.S. is the Standard EBS (100 IOPS) valid or do I need to choose a Provisioned IOPS (up to 1000 IOPS)?

• Mac Snow Leopard Server DNS

  I have a Tomcat-driven application on my Windows server that I am planning to move to a MacMiniServer. Before I do this, I want to fully test the transition for licensing purposes. I have a Fire drive setup with Snow Leopard Server and the base app runs just fine BUT I need to be able to resolve the URL to my domain and not localhost. So, I figured I would setup panomedia.net in the DNS Server and also create an A record to my internal network IP so www.panomedia.net would dish out the same thing as localhost. The problem is: The Tomcat web app starts up going through panomedia.local and not through www.panomedia.net and My main network preference panel is still looking at my Comcast DNS search providers even though I put my local IP address as the only DNS Server and Search provider. I need to test this via an actual domain name before I commit to a 400GB data move. Can anyone help?
