  • Sustainability Activities at Oracle OpenWorld

    Close to 50,000 participants will come to San Francisco for Oracle OpenWorld and JavaOne events, held September 30-October 4, 2012 at Moscone Center. Oracle is very conscious of the impact that these events have on the environment and, as part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability, has developed a sustainable event program-now in its fifth year-that aims to maximize positive benefits and minimize negative impacts in a variety of ways. Click here for more details. At the Oracle OpenWorld conference, there will be many sessions and even a hands-on lab which discuss the sustainability solutions that Oracle provides for our customers. I wanted to highlight a few of those sessions here so if you will be at Oracle OpenWorld, you can make sure to attend them. One of the most compelling sessions promises to be our “Eco-Enterprise Innovation Awards and the Business Case for Sustainability” session on Wednesday, October 3 from 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. in Moscone West 3005.     It might seem like there is not much time passed since Tyrus 1.0 (Java API for WebSocket reference implementation) release, but the fact is it was frozen several weeks before going public and development in the trunk continued. Tyrus 1.1 brings some new features and improvements: client-side proxy support simple command line client various stability/performance fixes (see below for complete list) Individual blog posts about highlighted features will follow, same as related user guide chapters.. stay tuned! Tyrus 1.1 is already integrated in Glassfish trunk - you can download nightly build or upgrade to newer Tyrus manually (replace all Tyrus jars; I know this is not very user friendly, so I'll try to come up with some better solution or at least simple guide).   • EntSSO stopped working

    My EntSSO (Enterprise Single Sign-On Server, part of BizTalk) did not start today, with the message: The SSO service failed to start. Error Code: 0x80131700 Could not create SSOSQL. To fix the problem, reinstall SSO or try 'regasm SSOSQL.dll' from a Visual Studio command prompt. Error Code: 0x80131700   The only reason for this that I can think of is that I have just installed the .net framework 4.0 RC but I have not verified this. The solution suggest in the error message works like a charm! Open a Visual Studio command prompt and run this command: regasm  ‘C:\Program Files\Common Files\Enterprise Single Sign-On\SSOSQL.dll’ Problem solved!

  • Flash player (in Firefox) is unstable in 14.04

    For 13.10, I used this guide to get Intel iGPU-supported playback of flash videos in Firefox: http://www.webupd8.org/2013/09/adobe-flash-player-hardware.html All in all, Intel graphics acceleration for flash content was working just fine in 13.10, at least on my machine (with Xubuntu). I basically followed the guide to do the same for 14.04, but about 2-3 weeks ago flash videos started acting up. Whenever I have one instance of flash paused or stopped in one tab and go to the next tab to continue some song on Soundcloud or something, it's game over. I'm clueless as to what I can do here. Did anything change in the meantime?

    SOA Suite 11g Developers Cookbook Available Just realized that I failed to mention that Matt & mine’s most recent book, the SOA Suite 11g Developers Cookbook was published over Christmas last year! In some ways this was an easier book to write than the Developers Guide, the hard bit was deciding what recipes to include.  Once we had decided that the writing of the book was pretty straight forward. The book focuses on areas that we felt we had neglected in the Developers Guide, and so there is more about Java integration and OSB, both of which we see a lot of questions about when working with customers.   • Windows Phone 7 Design Template

    Expression Blend is a wonderful design environment for WP7 (Windows Phone 7) but for quickly visualizing a concept nothing beats Illustrator! I am excited about WP7 and decided that having a solid .ai template would prove invaluable. Some of the details of the WP7 UI Design and Interaction Guide are a bit fuzzy (literally) but I was able to generate some useful layout guides, character styles, and symbols. While the template does not cover every aspect of the guide I think it is a good launching point; if you find it useful and extend it please share your updates (I created the template in CS4, if you have problems in earlier versions let me know).Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?   • StreamInsight Licensing

    I cannot help but think that this is currently wrong.  There are two editions of StreamInsight (SI), Premium and Standard.  A link to their differences is here Points to note Developer Edition and Evaluation Edition represent Enterprise Edition in SQL Server but not SI where they represent Datacentre Edition.  Won’t this be confusing when people evaluating SI find that it is not the same animal when they move to Enterprise Edition? If SI Premium is the only thing you want out of the SQL Server box then it is going to be a high cost. The latency rates as well quoted on the site above make Premium Edition essential if you are going to be using this to do Real-Time analytics.

  • Repacked proprietary software keeps updating the same deb

    I repacked a proprietary program delivered as tar file to a deb file for having a company wide repository. I used reprepro to set up a repository and signed it. A unix timestamp is faking a versioning numbering, so I can have different (real) versions installed at the same time. Almost everything works as expected. The deb file looks like this: mysoft8.0v6_1366455181_amd64.deb Only problem on a client machine it tries to install the same deb file over and over again because it thinks its an update. What do I miss: control file in deb package looks like this: Package: mysoft8.0v6 Version: 1366455181 Section: base Priority: optional Architecture: amd64 Installed-Size: 1272572 Depends: Maintainer: me Description: mysoft 8.0v6 dpkg repackaging and the config in the repository: /mirror/mycompany.inc/conf/distributions: Origin: apt.mycompany.inc Label: apt repository Codename: precise Architectures: amd64 i386 Components: main Description: Mycompany debian/ubuntu package repo SignWith: yes Pull: precise Help much appreciated Added guide: This Is the guide I used to create the repository.

  • EM CLI, diving in and beyond!

With this in mind, I put together two screen watches on Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c command line interface, or EM CLI as it is also known. There is a wealth of information on any topic that you choose to read about, from manual pages to coding documents…might I even say blog posts? In our busy lives it is so nice to just sit back with a short video, watch and learn enough to dive in. Doing more in less time, is the essence of EM CLI. It enables you to script fundamental and complex administrative tasks in an elegant way, thanks to the Jython scripting language. Repetitive tasks can be scripted and reused again and again. Sure, a Graphical User Interface provides a more intuitive step by step approach to tasks, and it provides a way of quickly becoming familiar with a product and its many features, and it is definitely the way to go when viewing performance data and historical trending…but for repetitive and complex tasks, scripting is the way to go! Lets us take the everyday task of creating an administrator. Using EM CLI in interactive mode the command could look like this.. emcli>create_user(name='jan.doe', type='EXTERNAL_USER') This command creates an administrator called jan.doe which is an externally authenticated user, possibly LDAP or SSO, defined by the EXTERNAL_USER tag. The create_user procedure takes many arguments; see the documentation for more information. Now, where EM CLI really shines and shows power is in creating multiple users. Regardless of the number, tens or thousands, the effort is the same. With the use of a standard programming construct, a loop, you can place your create_user() procedure within it. Using a loop allows you to iterate through a previously created list, creating new users until the list is complete. Using EM CLI in Script mode, your Jython loop would look something like this… for user in list_of_users:       create_user(name=user, expire=’true’, password=’welcome123’) This Jython code snippet iterates through a previously defined list of names, list_of_users, and iterates through the list, taking each name, user in this case, and creates an administrator sets the password to welcome123, but forces the user to reset it when they first login. This is only one of over four hundred procedures created to expose Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c functionality in a powerful and programmatic way. It is a few months since we released EM CLI with scripting option. We are seeing many users adapt to this fun and powerful way of using Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c. What are the first steps? Watch these screen watches, and dive in. The first screen watch steps you through where and how to download and install and how to run your first few commands. The Second screen watch steps you through a few scripts. Next time, I am going to show you the basic building blocks to writing a Jython script to perform Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c administrative tasks. Join this growing group of EM CLI users….   • Why won't my install on Macbook work?

    I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my Macbook. The CD drive is broken, so I am going from a USB flash drive I created. I can get it to "Try Ubuntu" perfectly fine, as a matter of fact I'm using it right now. However, I really want to install. Everything is partitioned, rEFIt is installed. I run the installer and I follow the guide at Apple Intel Installation I get to the install part of the installer, and after running it ends with a fatal grub error. Anyone know how to get past this? I feel like it has something to do with the fact that I don't get the last dialog box of the installer with the "advanced" tab used in the guide. Any help is greatly appreciated!

    I always hear that PHP is for medium and small websites whereas .NET and Java for enterprise applications. My question is about PHP. Why is PHP not a good option for enterprise web applications? Is it because if the web application becomes bigger then PHP will be slower as it is an interpreted language? I know that corporate world will choose .NET or J2EE because of the integration with their products and because of back end services, etc. However, if we just have PHP for building sites and web applications then how can we use it to perform well with big sites? In short, Is there a relationship between the performance of PHP and the size of the website? What are the factors that make PHP not appropriate option for big sites?

  • Using EPEL repos with Oracle Linux

    There's a Fedora project called EPEL which hosts a set of additional packages that can be installed on top of various distributions such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, Scientific Linux and of course also Oracle Linux. These packages are not distributed by the distribution vendor and as such also not supported by the vendors (including Oracle) however for users that want to pick up some extras that are useful, it's very easy to do this. All you need to do is download the EPEL RPM from the website, install it on Oracle Linux 5 or Oracle Linux 6 and run yum install or yum search to get the packages. example : # wget http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/6/i386/epel-release-6-5.noarch.rpm # rpm -ivh epel-release-6-5.noarch.rpm # yum repolist Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit, rhnplugin repo id repo name status epel Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux 6 - x86_64 7,124 The folks that build these repositories are doing a great job at adding very useful packages. They are free, but also unsupported of course.
