• Causes of hard crashes on Windows XP and how to debug

  I am occasionally seeing hard lockups on XP: totally unresponsive to keyboard/mouse, screen freezes at time of crash, no SSH/VNC possible. Very intermittent, nothing in the logs. I never see a blue screen on any kind of error message. This morning I logged in via VNC, logged out again, 20 minutes later physically sat at PC and it crashed around the time of VNC logout. I tend to suspect video cards in these kind of situations but it's a modern-ish card with modern drivers (one revision back, but this has been happening for 5 revisions or more) and normally would at least see a blue screen I expect. What would you suspect? Where can I look or what can I set up for more information? Bear in mind that this happens about once every 3 or 4 weeks, so extensive logging or intrusive monitoring isn't really an option.

• Worth it to move /var to physical disk vs logical?

  Brief question about partition layout. I use an SSD for /, /boot, /usr, & /home partitions. I'd like to move /var to a mechanical disk to minimize writes to the SSD. I'm mainly concerned about maximizing drive life rather than maximizing performance (although I obviously wouldn't want to cripple my server). My mechanical disks consist of two drives sharing LVM, and a third used for nightly rsync backups. I also have a bunch of old 2.5in hard disks lying around. My question is, should I simply create a new LVM volume '/var' on my primary data store, or would it be worth the increased energy consumption (in terms of maximizing the lifetime of the LVMed drives) to install a low volume 2.5in disk to use just for /var? On a more general level my question is about the trade offs of placing OS mounts on the same physical volumes as my data. Thanks for any help!

• Recover Time Machine partition that turned MBR only instead of GUID

  I have one drive that has a NTFS partition, a TimeMachine partition (I guess HFS+) and empty space. The other day, I did one partition more from Windows 8 (bootcamp) and since then, I can't see the TimeMachine one from OSX, I can see it from Windows though. The problem is that TimeMachine uses a file system that Windows cannot browse, only shows some folders and I need to recover this partition because I have to use it to backup my Mac. On OSX I can only see the NTFS partition and the other one appears unmounted and it's impossible to mount. I've come to the conclusion that something has happened to the partition table. With TestDisk it shows that it's MBR only when I think it should be GUID: And pressing p shows that it's FDisk_partition_scheme and the TimeMachine one appears as Windows_NTFS.   i've a problem on my windows 2008 server x64, and i cannot understand how can i solve it. i'm looking to Resource Monitor and see about 100 to 200 hard faults/sec. and generally the machine is slow. As i've readed a bit it is caused by a "memory Page" that is no longer available on physical memory and causes a io operations (disk) and it is a problem. The current hardware is a intel core2duo E8400 (3.0GHz) with 6GB RAM on a Windows Server Web 64-bit. Actually the machine have about 2GB Ram used what having 4Gb available to use, Why is the machine requires that high level of Disk operations? what can i do to increase the performance? Im experiencing a memory issues? what should be my starting point?

  My wife's computer had a virus alarm go off, so I am looking into it. The virus is supposed to be on the D: drive. I wanted to talk a quick look at the file, but I cannot not. It has one file that I can get to. It is D:\Recovery. That shows a "Protected by PC Angel" graphic. How can I get past this? Should I do it? Is the virus scanner wrong? (I am using Avast).

• How to hide a partition?

  I bought a small 32 GB SSD to store the operating system (Windows 7) and my applications. I'll copy the existing boot partition (30 GB) from my harddisk (WD Velociraptor) to the SSD using GParted but I'd like to keep the existing partition intact (keeping all data on it) so I can go back to it if there is a problem with the SSD. How can I hide the partition so it is not visible anymore to Windows? What should I change with GParted? Second question: how can I keep the harddisk partition synced with the SSD so I have a backup? I'm looking for a near real-time solution (not something like Acronis Drive Image).

I created a symlink using: ln -s /media/MYDISK /home/camilo/MYDISK chmod 777 /home/camilo/MYDISK I'm setting up smb.conf like this: [myshare1] comment = external disk browsable = yes path = /home/camilo/MYDISK guest ok = yes read only = no create mask = 0775 Also, in the [global] section I tried adding the following lines: follow symlinks = yes wide links = yes unix extensions = no The problem is that when browsing the shared folder in Windows 7, I get a "\\etc\myshare1 is not accessible" error. When pointing the path to a regular folder it works fine. Also, when I point it directly to /media/MYDISK, it shows the same error. EDIT: to make it more interesting, I have no graphical interface, so I need to touch the config files directly..

• External hard drive not disconnecting and leaving 'ghost drives' on my PC

  I use a Seagate FreeAgent on my laptop and PC. While it works fine most of the time, sometimes when I try to safely disconnect it, it says the files are in use. Obviously I have by that time shut down all applications. Now with my laptop, a Toshiba Satellite, I shut down the computer and unplug the Seagate and no ghost drives are found. But no matter what I do with my desktop, it continues to create 'ghost drives'. Is this due to a feature in the external hard drive, and if so, would anyone have an idea how I can fix it? I am getting tired of deleting the 'ghost drives'. Both my laptop and desktop use Windows 7.

• SD card mounted as bootable image instead of FAT 32

  I have an SD card that I recently used to take photos on vacation. It have taken a lot of photos using it and worked fine on the camera. However, I had forgotten that a few months before this trip, I tried to make the SD card a bootable Xubuntu USB drive. So when I plugged my SD card in to copy the photos, the card mounts as the Xubuntu image, rather than mounting as the FAT32 drive with the images on it. The files must still be on the drive. Any ideas on how to fix this? (I'm using Mac OS X) Thanks!

• Enabling DMA in pc with windows 7

  I was checking my pc settings using AIDA64 (supposed to be the successor for Everest - it basically shows you detailed hardware you currently have). For my ATA hard disk it shows the setting for DMA as "supported, disabled". But when I checked the windows setting I see that it is actually enabled. How can I find out which is correct? • How can I increase the size of a Windows 2003 NTFS partition?

  Hi everybody! I have a very important server running Windows Server 2003 and my System partition is becoming too small, it's slowing down the machine. I have already tried all the cleaning stuff and transferring some "unimportant softs" on the "Saves" partition but it didn't help much at all. Is there a way to re-partition my hard-drive that will work on a 2003 Server, that's not too expensive and that could be used without turning the machine off. If there is no other way, then I'll have to reinstall the OS, but it will have to wait for the weekend. Thanks for your suggestions.

Later I tried to create a partition using this free space using diskmanagement tool. It shows free space as unusabe space and the only one option available is to make it as a simple partition. Unfortunately I made it as simple partition and all my partitions converted to simple dynamic partition. Now after reboot the OS is not loading. I tried to reinstall the OS by formatting the C drive, but it doesn't work. Now I can't load the OS properly. How can I install Windows 7 on my system without losing my data on the other two drives?

• What does this WinImage Error Mean?

  Hi, I am using WinImage (version 8.0) on Windows XP SP3 to create a VHD File from my Hard Drive, however, everytime I try to, everytime it says: "I/O error in reading data on position 000000007cd40000:00010000. Error 23: Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)." with the options "Abort", "Retry", "Skip" & "Skip All". Everytime I try "Retry" the message comes, if I click skip another message comes up (same as above, except the data position). I have run "CHKDSK /F /R" several times, but the error always appears. What is wrong? Can I safely skip the Errors? Is there anything I can do to fix the error?

• diagnose "corrupt file" problems

  My computer has been crashing the last couple weeks pretty regularly (at least once a day). A lot of times things I do will display a little notification in the bottom right saying something about a corrupt file. (I'm on Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3). When the computer does crash I get the "blue screen of death" usually. Some of the notifications also advise running the chkdsk utility. I cannot get it to successfully run. Using the command prompt (or even the "tools" menu after right clicking the drive and choosing properties), it will not run the utility (it says "do you want to schedule it to run next boot time" or whatever, which I confirm). The problem is that most of the time after restarting, it doesn't run at all. The few times it does run, it has an error (I can't remember the error right now, it at least says it's ntfs and such) and says disk checking will end. How can I get it to successfully run?

  Hi, I just bought an 1TB External Hard drive with eSATA, USB, FW400/800 (LaCie if you are interested). I already put the windows 7 installation in a FAT32 active partition so i can plug the HDD via USB, since my notebook or other computers doesn't support boot via eSATA commonly, and it works. Now i want to do more partitions so i'm looking for a way to have a boot manager as active partitions that allows me to boot from different partitions in my HDD (win7, ubuntu installations for example) I want to know if you know any software to do this or you already have this system. • Debian Harddrive Fdisk - Same ID's and changing letters

  I am trying to create and install a debain NAS and ive been having a hard time because I am new to all of this. I used ntfs-3g in order to automount my 4 NTFS drives. I also have a partitioned harddrive which is for the OS. When I was working on it and I ran this command I got this: fdisk -l /dev/sdae1 fdisk -l | grep NTFS /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1 The weird thing is, all of the NTFS harddrives listed had an ID of 7. The next time I boot up my machine, I get an error about mounting /dev/sda1 and I run this command, and get the following results: fdisk -l | grep NTFS /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1 /dev/sde1 I havent plugged in any drives, so whats going on? How to I make sure that my drives are mounted with the same sdXX name every time, and is the reason for this because they dont have unique ID numbers, if so, how do I solve this?

What I want to do, is have a dual-boot setup (2 partitions, both 50 GB) for Windows 8 and Windows 7. But will I be able to access the 3rd partition on the disk, or the other disk from both OSs? In this case, it would be really useful to access files and install programs, because I could use them on both OSs, as long as I have the same registry keys.

• Trouble accessing network drives in Windows 7

  Hi, Recently purchased a LaCiE network drive. Connected it to my router, configured it, added a user for myself. Installed the "Network Assistant" that came with it - no problem. Went to My Computer Network, found the network drive - was prompted for a login/password to see the contents, types \user and password (leading slash to get rid of DOMAIN) and accesses contents. There is one open share that I can access/mount without problem and there's another share with my user name as set-up via the network drive's web-based config. Double-clicked on that, prompted again. user/password doesn't work! It says I have no permissions but the user/pass combination is PERFECT. Some Windows Vista posts talk about a Local Security Policy menu - but that's nowhere to be found. Any ideas? (Windows 7 Professional BTW).

  My Windows 7 Release Candidate is about to expire, so I'm going to do a clean install of a retail version. I have two volumes, on four physical drives, as follows: Disk 0: Spanned Volume (D:) Disk 1: Primary Partition, Boot/Windows Install (C:) Disk 2: Spanned Volume (D:) Disk 3: Spanned Volume (D:) If I install Windows to a formatted drive 1, will it still recognize the spanned volume in Disks 0, 2, and 3? The spanned volume is not redundant in any way, so the volume is 1.5TB consisting of three 500GB disks. I don't have the space to do an external backup, and I thought it was impossible to convert a spanned volume back to a basic volume.

  I am using DBAN to erase HDD. DBAN is loaded from a CD and BIOS Boot order has been set to favour CD drive. On starting laptop, system boots from CD and DBAN interface can be seen. DBAN detects two storage devices, HDD and the SD Card. My HDD IS 320GB but DBAN says 298GB. It erases the SD card but when i try to erase HDD, it gives following error. • Looking for a free or open-source burner emulator [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Virtual CDR driver I am looking for a free or open-source virtual CD/DVD emulator to run in a Windows environment. What I want is similar to what SlySoft's Virtual Clone Drive or Daemon Tools provides, but the emulated drive needs to be a burner of some type. The burner should be able to save disc images (.iso, .ccd, etc) to my harddrive - basically, the same as if I burned the files to a CD-R, and then ripped them back to a disc image. I have already looked around some and come across 2 - DVD neXt COPY iTurns and NoteBurner M4P. Both of these programs create a virtual CD-RW drive, but they are integrated into their product (for burning from iTunes to create mp3 files) and cannot create disc images. I am currently writing a piece of software that will have the capability to burn disc images onto CDs/DVDs, and I don't want to end up with a 100 coasters while I'm testing my software. • Can't select hard disk off Windows 7 system image creator

  When I try to create a system image in Windows 7 from the Control Panel (Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Backup and Restore) I get the option to select a hard disk or a removeable disk to select, I have 2 disks and wanted to create the image on my spare one. However when I click refresh it doesn't show either of my disks but shows my CDROM under the removable disks area, anyone have this problem? Also, when I select a USB disk instead, it tries to iamge both my disks! I can't select my active Windows 7 installed disk! How pointless!
