  This could sound a subjective question, but what i am looking for is specific instances which you would have encountered related to this. 1) How to make a code, cache effective-cache friendly? (More cache hits, as less cahce misses as possible). from both perspectives, data cache & program cache(instruction cache). i.e. What all things in one's code, related to data structures, code constructs one should take care of to make it cache effective. 2) Are there any particular data structures one must use, must avoid,or particular way of accessing the memers of that structure etc.. to make code cache effective. 3) Are there any program constructs(if, for, switch, break, goto,...), code-flow(for inside a if, if inside a for, etc...) one should follow/avoid in this matter? I am looking forward to hear individual experiences related to making a cache efficient code in general. It can be any programming language(C,C++,ASsembly,...), any hardware target(ARM,Intel,PowerPC,...), any OS(Windows,Linux,Symbian,...) etc.. More the variety, it will help better to understand it deeply.

• Using cellUpdateEvent with YUI DataTable and JSON DataSource

  I'm working with a UI that has a (YUI2) JSON DataSource that's being used to populate a DataTable. What I would like to do is, when a value in the table gets updated, perform a simple animation on the cell whose value changed. Does a cell that's updated as a result of the setInterval callback even fire a cellUpdateEvent? It may be that I don't fully understand what's going on under the hood with DataTable. Perhaps the whole table is being redrawn every time the data is queried, so it doesn't know or care about changes to individual cells?. Is the solution to write my own specific function to replace onDataReturnReplaceRows? Could someone enlighten me on how I might go about accomplishing this? Edit: After digging through datatable-debug.js, it looks like onDataReturnReplaceRows won't fire the cellUpdateEvent. It calls reset() on the RecordSet that's backing the DataTable, which deletes all of the rows; it then re-populates the table with fresh data. I tried changing it to use onDataReturnUpdateRows, but that doesn't seem to work either.

• Upgrade to Delphi 2010, or stick with Delphi 7 "forever"?

  I am an individual user of Delphi, starting back in the early Turbo Pascal days. I have quite a bit of code developed over the years, but I have never sold software commercially or used it for business. Historically, Borland supported the non-professional users with lower cost versions, but Embarcadero does not. As I consider upgrading to Delphi 2010, I am put off by the high price. Embarcadero is also trying to "encourage" upgrading by threatening to charge "new user" prices for upgrades after Dec 31st. I have several questions for the community to help me decide whether to upgrade. 1) I have read about difficulties updating existing code to support the unicode string types. I have no need for unicode strings, and I am happy with the string support in D7. Will I have to modify existing code and components just to re-compile under D2010? Or are there compiler options to allow backward compatibility if new string types are not required? 2) The main reason I'm considering upgrading is for IDE improvements, and to get access to new APIs added to Windows since 2002. Are there any Windows 7 APIs or capabilities that would be impossible to support from my programs compiled using using Delphi 7 (assuming appropriate JEDI API libraries, for example)? 3) Is there anything else about Delphi 2010 that is really compelling for someone who is primarily interested in Win32 apps, and not working with databases? I have read that D2010 is slow to load, and other versions between D7 and D2010 have had stability issues, and the help system was "broken". What is the biggest benefit to D2010?

• SQL Server 2008 Running trigger after Insert, Update locks original table

  Hi Folks, I have a serious performance problem. I have a database with (related to this problem), 2 tables. 1 Table contains strings with some global information. The second table contains the string stripped down to each individual word. So the string is like indexed in the second table, word by word. The validity of the data in the second table is of less important then the validity of the data in the first table. Since the first table can grow like towards 1*10^6 records and the second table having an average of like 10 words for 1 string can grow like 1*10^7 records, i use a nolock in order to read the second this leaves me free for inserting new records without locking it (Expect many reads on both tables). I have a script which keeps on adding and updating rows to the first table in a MERGE statement. On average, the data beeing merged are like 20 strings a time and the scripts runs like ones every 5 seconds. On the first table, i have a trigger which is beeing invoked on a Insert or Update, which takes the newly inserted or updated data and calls a stored procedure on it which makes sure the data is indexed in the second table. (This takes some significant time). The problem is that when having the trigger disbaled, Reading the first table happens in a few ms. However, when enabling the trigger and your in bad luck of trying to read the first table while this is beeing updated, Our webserver gives you a timeout after 10 seconds (which is way to long anyways). I can quess from this part that when running the trigger, the first table is kept (partially) in a lock untill the trigger is completed. What do you think, if i'm right, is there a easy way around this? Thanks in advance! Cheers, Koen

• C# Regex - Replace multiple characters at once without overwriting?

  Hello guys, I'm implementing a c# program that should automatize a Mono-alphabetic substitution cipher. The functionality i'm working on at the moment is the simplest one: The user will provide a plain text and a cipher alphabet, for example: Plain text(input): THIS IS A TEST Cipher alphabet: A - Y, H - Z, I - K, S - L, E - J, T - Q Cipher Text(output): QZKL KL QJLQ I thought of using regular expressions since I've been programming in perl for a while, but I'm encountering some problems on c#. First I would like to know if someone would have a suggestion for a regular expression that would replace all occurrence of each letter by its corresponding cipher letter (provided by user) at once and without overwriting anything. Example: In this case, user provides plaintext "TEST", and on his cipher alphabet, he wishes to have all his T's replaced with E's, E's replaced with Y and S replaced with J. My first thought was to substitute each occurrence of a letter with an individual character and then replace that character by the cipherletter corresponding to the plaintext letter provided. Using the same example word "TEST", the steps taken by the program to provide an answer would be: 1 - replace T's with (lets say) @ 2 - replace E's with # 3 - replace S's with & 4 - Replace @ with E, # with Y, & with j 5 - Output = EYJE This solution doesn't seem to work for large texts. I would like to know if anyone can think of a single regular expression that would allow me to replace each letter in a given text by its corresponding letter in a 26-letter cipher alphabet without the need of splitting the task in an intermediate step as I mentioned. • How to modernize an enormous legacy database?

  I have a question, just looking for suggestions here. So, my application is 'modernizing' a desktop application by converting it to the web, with an ICEFaces UI and server side written in Java. However, they are keeping around the same Oracle database, which at current count has about 700-900 tables and probably a billion total records in the tables. Some individual tables have 250 million rows, many have over 25 million. Needless to say, the database is not scaling well. As a result, the performance of the application is looking to be abysmal. The architects / decision makers-that-be have all either refused or are unwilling to restructure the persistence. So, basically we are putting a fresh coat of paint on a functional desktop application that currently serves most user needs and does so with relative ease and quick performance. I am having trouble sleeping at night thinking of how poorly this application is going to perform and how difficult it is going to be for everyday users to do their job. So, my question is, what options do I have to mitigate this impending disaster? Is there some type of intermediate layer I can put in between the database and the Java code to speed up performance while at the same time keeping the database structure intact? Caching is obviously an option, but I don't see that as being a cure-all. Is it possible to layer a NoSQL DB in between or something?

• Image "moves" when varying heightForRowAtIndexPath in UITableViewCell.

  I have a table view with varying height, as defined in the heightForRowAtIndexPath. For some very odd reason, the image is "indented" to the right based on the height; if the height is low enough, the image is stuck to the left side of the cell, but as the height increases, the image for said cell is shifted rightward compared to other rows. The result of this is a very poor looking list, with images floppily laid out in a zig-zag pattern depending on the height of each individual row. • What is the right way to scale a Flex application up to fullscreen?

  Fullscreen mode and I have been battling for a while in this Flex application, and I'm coming up short on Google results to end my woes. I have no problem going into fullscreen mode by doing a Application.application.stage.displayState = StageDisplayState.FULL_SCREEN;, but the rest of the content just sits there in the top, left corner at it's original size. All right, says I, I'll just do a stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.SHOW_ALL and make it figure out how to pull this off. And it looks like it does. Except that when you mouse over the individual checkboxes and buttons and various components, they all fidget slightly. Just a slight jump up or down as they resize...on mouse over. Well, this is frustrating, but bearable. I can always just invoke invalidateSize() explicitly for all of them. But for the comboboxes. The ones at the bottom have their menus go off the bottom of the screen, and when I pop out of fullscreen mode, their drop downs cut off half way. I have no idea how to fix that. Can someone step in here, and put me out of my misery? • Windows Azure DownloadtoStream EOF error

  Hello, I've been using Windows Azure to create a document management system, and things have gone well so far. I've been able to upload and download files to the BLOB storage through an asp.net front end. What I'm attempting to do now is allow users to upload a .zip file, and then take the files out of that .zip and save them as individual files. Problem is, I'm getting "ZipException was unhandled" "EOF in header" and I don't know why. I'm using the ICSharpCode.SharpZipLib library which I've used for many other tasks and its worked great. Here's the basic code: CloudBlob ZipFile = container.GetBlobReference(blobURI); MemoryStream MemStream = new MemoryStream(); ZipFile.DownloadToStream(MemStream); .... while ((theEntry = zipInput.GetNextEntry()) != null) and it's on the line that starts with while that I get the error. I added a sleep duration of 10 seconds just to make sure enough time had gone by. MemStream has a length if I debug it, but the zipInput does sometimes, but not always. It always fails. • drupal_add_css not working

  Hiya, I need to use drupal_add_css to call stylesheets onto single D6 pages. I don't want to edit the main theme stylesheet as there will be a set of individual pages which all need completely new styles - the main sheet would be massive if i put it all in there. My solution was to edit the page in PHP editor mode and do this: <?php drupal_add_css("/styles/file1.css", "theme"); ?> <div id="newPageContent">stuff here in html</div> But when i view source, there is nothing there! Not even a broken css link or anything, it's just refusing to add the css sheet to the css package put into the page head. • How do I use an SWT Control to render the content of an SWT/JFace table?

  I have a JFace TableViewer with an SWT Table, and I would like to custom render the content of some cells. I would like to use an SWT Control to render the cell content. I would prefer to have only one instance of the Control doing the rendering, but if I have to instantiate one for each row, that would be acceptable. Next, the solution MUST be compatible with the ContentProvider/LabelProvider approach (I am using EMF). This means that I cannot use the solution described in Sniplet 126 (http://dev.eclipse.org/viewcvs/index.cgi/org.eclipse.swt.snippets). Next, I though about using custom drawing. But here the catch is, that I have to send individual drawing operations to the graphics context. I was trying to have the Control render the content for me by calling redraw() or print(GC) upon SWT.PaintItem, but that just lead to uncontrollable flickering. At this point, my best guess is to use SWT.PaintItem to do the drawing. This will result in duplicate code, as I already have a Control that can render the content the way I'd like it. I'd like to prevent this redundancy. Any help is appreciated!

• Test Results window in VS2008 not showing results

  I have an existing solution that has been working for a long time, containing around 600 tests in a couple of test projects. I recently moved to a new PC - it's Win7-x64, and I installed a fresh copy of VS2008. When I first opened the solution on the new machine, the Test List Editor was completely empty. Trying to create a new test list caused the editor to refresh, and now it shows my test lists, but they're acting funny. I can select tests in the lists, and run them, but the results window doesn't usually update automatically to show the results of the latest test. It has done this when running a single test a couple of times, but even that is not consistent. The only way I can view the results is by manually going to the Test Runs window and connecting to individual test runs. When I do that, the results show up in the results list, but I can't check them to re-run the failed tests - the check boxes are all disabled. I guess I should describe the way it used to work, in case that was unusual - I used to select some tests from the Test Lists window, tell it to run them, and the results window would clear itself, and then display the results from the current run. I could then check any tests that I wanted to re-run, and use the run/debug button in the results window to do so. Any ideas what's going on here?

• Cron Job on Ubuntu Hardy Executing But Not Deleting Files As Expected

  I have a bit of a pickle here and wonder if anyone can give me some pointers: I have a cron job which executes for a particular user daily and is supposed to sweep files in a particular directory. Technically, it is two jobs. I've turned on cron.log to verify they're actually executing, and they are: May 24 11:03:01 AppNameGoesHere /USR/SBIN/CRON[11257]: (mongrel_AppNameGoesHere) CMD (rm -rf /var/www/apps/AppNameGoesHere/current/public/ {popular,index,purchasing,purchasing-alternate,support,about-us,guarantee,screenshots}.htm{,l}) May 24 11:04:01 AppNameGoesHere /USR/SBIN/CRON[11260]: (mongrel_AppNameGoesHere) CMD (rm -rf /var/www/apps/AppNameGoesHere/current/public/ {stats,popular,bcf,articles,expenses}) I have removed the actual usernames and formatted it so that it is less ugly on StackOverflow. Now, my question: Despite the fact that I can see these deletions executing and apparently succeeding in the log, if I go to the specified directory, the files are still there. I initially suspected permission hijinx were going on, but I've verified that I can delete the files manually by su-ing into the mongrel_AppNameGoesHere user and issuing individual rm commands or by copy/pasting the cron job to the command line. Anything that I don't manually zap stays unzapped despite days of that cron job executing successfully. Any suggestions on to what might be happening? I was previously using Dapper Drake with these cron jobs in the /etc/crontab file directly, and when I upgraded to Hardy I moved them to user-specific crontabs (via sudo crontab -e - u mongrel_AppNameGoesHere), which was the point where they appear to have stopped working.)

• Create a VPN with Python

  I want to make a device "tunnel box" that you plug an input ethernet line, and an output ethernet line, and all the traffic that goes through it gets modified in a special way. This is similar to how a firewall, IDS, VPN, or similar boxes are connected inline in a network. I think you can just assume that I am writing a custom VPN in Python for the purpose of this question: LAN computer <--\ LAN computer <---> [LAN switch] <--> ["tunnel box"] <--> [internet modem] <--> LAN computer <--/ My question is, what is a good way to program this "tunnel box" from python? My application needs to see TCP flows at the network layer, not as individual ethernet frames. Non-TCP/IP traffic such as ICPM and other types should just be passed through. Example Twisted-like Code for my "tunnel box" tunnel appliance: from my_code import special_data_conversion_function class StreamInterceptor(twisted.Protocol): def dataReceived(self,data): data=special_data_conversion_function(data) self.outbound_connection.send(data) My initial guesses: TUN/TAP with twisted.pair.tuntap.py - Problem: This seems to only work at the ethernet frame level, not like my example? • Changing JButton background colour temporarily?

  Hi, I'm super new to Java, and in need of some help. I'm making a little java desktop application where I basically have a grid of 4 JButtons ( 2 x 2 grid), and I need the background colour of individual JButtons to change, and after one second, change back to the original colour (the game I'm trying to make is like Simon, where you have to follow a pattern of buttons that light up). I have a vector that contains randomly generated numbers in the range of 1 to 4, and I want to be able to get each element from the vector and get the corresponding button to change to a different colour for one second (for example, if the vector contains 2 4 1, I would want button 2 to change, then button 4 to change, then button 1 to change). Is this possible or is there a better way to go about doing this with something other than JButtons? How do I implement this? Also, I'm running Mac OS X, which apparently (based on some things I've read on forums) doesn't like JButtons background changing (I think it's because of system look and feel), how can I change this so it works on mac? • Using Gdata Calendar API for PHP App to create a calender system with event ownership

  Hello, I'm working on a PHP app, and I'm trying to find the best way to set up a calendar system. First let me describe the intended function of the system: The application has multiple users who can login simultaneously. Each user should be able to add their own events and display them on their "profile." Also, on another page, the events should be able to be shown all together (from all users) and from each individual users exclusively. Since Google Calendar has a nice calendar-looking interface, I thought I would work with the GData APIs. Originally, I thought this would make things easier. But then it seems that if I want to represent event ownership, either each user would have to have a google account or somehow they all would each have to have a separate calendar. Thus, the application would have to create the calendar (if it does not exist) and be able to edit only their calendar. Two questions: Can I somehow use the GData APIs to accomplish my goal? (Mainly event ownership.) Should I just create my own calendar like application? Thanks!

• What do I need to do to make a WPF Browser Application (XBAP) that requires Full Trust work on Windo

  So this is a Visual Studio 2008, .NET, WPF, XBAP, Windows 7 question, regarding .NET trust policies. At work, we have several Web Browser Applications (.XBAP files) developed with Visual Studio 2008 (so .NET 3.5) that we deployed internally. These required a .NET FullTrust policy, we found a way to make a .MSI that adjusted the policy on individual stations, everything worked great. Users love in-browser apps. This was last year and on Windows XP. This year our company started upgrading users to Windows 7, and now none of our Web Browser Applications work. The error message is "Trust Not Granted", as if the policy-changing .MSI had not been run. Other details: I can confirm that our apps work on Windows XP for Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox, and do not work on Windows 7 for Internet Explorer 8 nor Firefox. I must admit that .NET security policies mystify me. Still, I could not find any mention of this problem on the Net at large or on this site. Did anybody else encounter this problem? Any and all help welcome.

• Using httplib2 in python 3 properly? (Timeout problems)

  Hey, first time post, I'm really stuck on httplib2. I've been reading up on it from diveintopython3.org, but it mentions nothing about a timeout function. I look up the documentation, but the only thing I see is an ability to put a timeout int but there are no units specified (seconds? milliseconds? What's the default if None?) This is what I have (I also have code to check what the response is and try again, but it's never tried more than once) h = httplib2.Http('.cache', timeout=None) for url in list: response, content = h.request(url) more stuff... So the Http object stays around until some arbitrary time, but I'm downloading a ton of pages from the same server, and after a while, it hangs on getting a page. No errors are thrown, the thing just hangs at a page. So then I try: h = httplib2.Http('.cache', timeout=None) for url in list: try: response, content = h.request(url) except: h = httplib2.Http('.cache', timeout=None) more stuff... But then it recreates another Http object every time (goes down the 'except' path)...I dont understand how to keep getting with the same object, until it expires and I make another. Also, is there a way to set a timeout on an individual request? Thanks for the help!

What is the best and/or most concise way of doing this? I have something like: <Object Value="{Binding ComplexValueObject.PropertyOne}" /> but the UI does not update when ComplexValueObject as a whole changes.

• What are the correct bindings for an NSComboBox for use with Core Data

  Imagine if you will a Core Data app with two entities (Employee, and Department). Employees have a to-one relationship with department (department) and the inverse is a to-many relationship (employees). In the UI you can select individual Employee entities and edit the details in a detail area (there are of course other attributes and there is UI for adding and editing Department entities). When using a popup button the bindings are: content = PopUpArrayController.arrangedObjects content values = PopUpArrayController.arrangedObjects.name (name is an NSString) selected object = EmployeeArrayController.selection.department.name This allows for viewing of all departments in the popup menu, correct selection of the current Employee's department, and allows that department to be changed as expected. The goal is to change this for an NSComboBox so that the user can tab to the box and type the department name in without switching to the mouse. I have tried numerous different bindings to accomplish this. I even had it work for one run with these bindings: content = PopUpArrayController.arrangedObjects.name value = EmployeeArrayController.selection.department.name At least once this worked as expected (it even added a new department when the entered text did not match any existing department). Now however it will display the available Departments and auto complete but will not update the model with the correct value when the value is changed in the combo box. If the Department is set or changed with the popup the correct department is shown in the combo box. Does anyone know what I am missing? Thanks.

• Free solution for automatic updates with a .NET/C# app?

  Yes, from searching I can see this has been asked time and time again. Here's a backstory. I'm an individual hobbyist developer with zero budget. A program I've been developing has been in need of constant bugfixes, and me and users are getting tired of having to manually update. Me, because my current solution of Manually FTP to my website Update a file "newest.txt" with the newest version Update index.html with a link to the newest version Hope for people to see the "there's an update" message Have them manually download the update sucks, and whenever I screw up an update, I get pitchforks. Users, because, well, "Are you ever going to implement auto-update?" "Will there ever be an auto-update feature?" Over the past I have looked into: WinSparkle - No in-app updates, and the DLL is 500 KB. My current solution is a few KBs in the executable and has no in-app updates. http://windowsclient.net/articles/appupdater.aspx - I can't comprehend the documentation http://www.codeproject.com/KB/vb/Auto_Update_Revisited.aspx - Doesn't appear to support anything other than working with files that aren't in use wyUpdate - wyBuild isn't free, and the file specification is simply too complex. ClickOnce - Workarounds for implementing launching on startup are massive, horrendous and not worth it for such a simple feature. Publishing is a pain; manual FTP and replace of all files is required for servers without FrontPage Extensions. I'm pretty much ready to throw in the towel right now and strangle myself. And then I think about Sparkle... EDIT: I came across SparkleDotNET just then. Looks good, though the DLL is 200 KB. Don't know if that's really that big of an issue, though.

• What are the best open-source software non-profits for making financial contributions and/or facilitating useful work?

  I'm not a great programmer myself (my main job is more electrical engineering) and have never really helped out with any open source projects, but I've benefited greatly from free and/or open-source software (MySQL, OpenOffice, Firefox, Apache, PHP, Java, etc.) and at some point would like to make some modest financial contributions to help keep this stuff going. I'm wondering, what are the best non-profits to make financial contributions? I'm aware of: Open Source Initiative (founded 10 years ago by several prominent figures including programmer and "The Cathedral and the Bazaar" author Eric S. Raymond) Free Software Foundation Mozilla Foundation Apache Foundation Anyone have a particular favorite? Ideally I'd like to give money to a non-profit that would foster some of the smaller but promising open-source and/or free software projects. The big projects like Firefox and Apache are already well-established. There are a few small individual shareware programs I've already paid for directly. But it's those middle-ground projects that I would really like my contributions to support. (one that comes to mind is a good GUI for Subversion or Mercurial.) It's one thing for a single person to donate a little $$ to a small project. It's another for a foundation or something to give larger grants to projects that give a good bang for the buck. Conservation organizations like The Nature Conservancy, or the Trust for Public Lands, have really honed this approach, but I'm not really sure if there's an equivalent model in software-land.

• What are the limitations of the .NET Assembly format?

  We just ran into an interesting issue that I've not experienced before. We have a large scale production ASP.NET 3.5 SP1 Web App Project in Visual Studio 2008 SP1 which gets compiled and deployed using a Website Deployment Project. Everything has worked fine for the last year, until after a check-in yesterday the app started critically failing with BadImageFormatException. The check-in in question doesn't change anything particularly special and the errors are coming from areas of the app not even changed. Using Reflector we inspected the offending methods to find that there were garbage strings in the code (which Reflector humorously interpreted as Chinese characters). We have consistently reproduced this on several machines so it does not appear to be hardware related. Further inspection showed that those garbage strings did not exist in the Assemblies used as inputs to aspnet_merge.exe during deployment. Web Deployment Project Output Assemblies Properties: Merge all outputs to a single assembly Merge each individual folder output to its own assembly Merge all pages and control outputs to a single assembly Create a separate assembly for each page and control output In the web deployment project properties if we set the merge options to the first option ("Merge all outputs to a single assembly") we experience the issue, yet all of the other options work perfectly! So my question: does anyone know why this is happening? Is there a size-limit to aspnet_merge.exe's capabilities (the resulting merged DLL is around 19.3 MB)? Are there any other known issues with merging the output of WAPs? I would love it if any Assembly format / aspnet_merge gurus know about any such limitations like this. Seems to me like a 25MB Assembly, while big, isn't outrageous. Less disk to hit if it is all pregen'd stuff.

• InvalidCastException in DataGridView

  (Using VS 2010 Beta 2 - .Net 4.0 B2 Rel) I have a class, MyTable, derived from BindingList where S is a struct. S is made up of several other structs, for example: public class MyTable<S>:BindingList<S> where S: struct { ... } public struct MyStruct { public MyReal r1; public MyReal r2; public MyReal R1 {get{...} set{...}} public MyReal R2 {get{...} set{...}} ... } public struct MyReal { private Double d; private void InitFromString(string) {this.d = ...;} public MyReal(Double d) { this.d = d;} public MyReal(string val) { this.d = default(Double); InitFromString(val);} public override string ToString() { return this.real.ToString();} public static explicit operator MyReal(string s) { return new MyReal(s);} public static implicit operator String(MyReal r) { return r.ToString();} ... } OK, I use the MyTable as a binding source for a DataGridView. I can load the data grid easily using InitFromString on individual fields in MyStruct. The problem comes when I try to edit a value in a cell of the DataGridView. Going to the first row, first column, I change the value of the existing number. It gives an exception blizzard, the first line of which says: System.FormatException: Invalid cast from 'System.String' to 'MyReal' I've looked at the casting discussions and reference books but don't see any obvious problems. Any ideas?
