• Windows 8 will only recognize the Blu Ray ROM, if the install disk is present at boot time

  If I have the install disk in the blu ray ROM drive at boot time and subsequently remove the disk and replace it with blu ray media everything functions as I'd expect. However, if I have no media present, or another disk in the drive at boot time, then windows 8 does not seem to recognize that the blu ray player is even present in the computer. It is not present in the 'my computer' screen, device manager does not show the player, and scanning for new hardware yields nothing. It seems that the driver is installed and working as expect, what is it about having the windows 8 install disk in the drive or not that would cause this kind of behavior?

• Send files ending in .mp4 in Apache with HTTP 206 Partial Content

  I am using Apache as web server and the return code is always HTTP/1.1 200. I want to set some kind of handler or use a mod to return HTTP/1.1 206 when the extension of the file requested is .mp4 so it can do video seeking, my web server is already returning some headers to do seeking, but it doesn't work. Is this possible?   I have few DVD-RAM disks and when using udftools, specifically sudo mkudffs --media-type=dvdram /dev/sr0 where /dev/sr0 is my DVD-RAM drive, I get trying to change type of multiple extents and nothing happens. What should I do? • Arch Linux with an nginx/django setup refuses to display ANYTHING

  I'm on Amazon Ec2, with an Arch Linux server. While I truly am loving it, I'm having the issue of actually getting nginx to display anything. Everytime I try to throw my hostname into the browser, the browser states that it's not available for some reason - almost as if the host doesn't even exist. One thing I'd like to know is, how can I get this up and running? Is there a specific arch linux configuration I have to do to make it web accessible? I have port 80 open, as well as port 22. I've tried using gunicorn, python-flup, and nginx. The thing is that Django itself is working fine, and my permissions to the document root of the where the site files are stored is 777. Ontop of that, I have a git repo which works perfectly fine, and django, python, and runfcgi all start without issues. The same goes for gunicorn, when I do a gunicorn_django -b 0.0.0.0:8000 in my document root.   Hi I've got 8GB RAM on my laptop running Ubuntu 12.04. I added following record to /etc/fstab tmpfs /media/ramdisk tmpfs defaults,noatime,mode=1777 0 0 What exactly it means? I have tested that I can save 4GB to ram disk at most. Why exactly 4GB? Where did the computer get this number from? And what happens when I don't use that ram disk for a while and when the directory /media/ramdisk is empty? Does it mean that my system can use whole 8GB ram? And what happens when the system runs out of ram? Will the most rarely used things be moved to swap? And should I turn of swap if I think my system will never need it? Will turning off the swap make my computer faster? And can I even remove the swap partition? And will the hibernation work correctly then?

  I already know about the option in Control Panel Sound Communications, so please don't bother pointing me there. I am using the Skype Modern UI app and whenever I start a call, it lowers the volume of anything else that I have active. How can I resolve this issue? Also, not sure if this is related, but any Modern UI music apps also lower their own volume when they are not in the foreground. But, does that use up an Apache thread/process per request? In my setup, I've noticed that all my processes are used up, even though they aren't doing anything, CPU wise. To free up apache processes, I've configured lighttpd and the amount of processes needed is lowered significantly, Munin shows. However, I've set it up to connect directly to lighty, to prevent apache workers from server static media. My question is: when using Apache Proxy, does that also use up a process/worker?

  I just bought a 1.5T HDD and a disk enclosure. I connected this disk to my laptop via the provided USB cable. I then used the following command: rsync -r -t -v --progress --delete -c -l -z / /media/C4E41A11E41A0678/Moonface_BKP/ I ran this for a long (long long) time when i noticed that what had been backed up to the HDD began to be backed up. In other words, when i ran the command, it created a /media directory and a C4... directory below that and kept recursively backing up this directory (since, I suppose, I was backing up the hard drive itself, too). So...what's the proper way to use rsync?

• Fedora Installation with software repository in DVD does not work

  I bought a new assembled PC with processor as Core-i3(2120) and Intel H61 motherboard and was trying to install Fedora 16 from a DVD. This DVD contains all the packages so that installation does not require to download packages from internet. I have used this DVD to install Fedora 16 offline many a times though in machines with different hardware configuration. But in this new machine when the installation reaches the stage wherein it asks for Software repository selection I select CD/DVD but the system fails to read the media and throws up an error that it cannot detect the media. THe LED in the DVD writer also indicate that the DVD is not being read. Now there is neither a problem with the DVD or the DVD drive because the installation started from the DVD itself. So what could the problem be, anything in the BIOS that is causing the problem, Is there any way I could utilize the packages already existing in the CD so that I save downloading the packages from DVD

  I have pppoe internet connection. My ISP provides connections like this: ISP->media converter(fiber)->8 port switch(TP Link TL-SF1008D)->to individual internet connection account holders (like me) Now the connection between the media converter and the switch is done using 4 pair cross over cat5 cable and I would like to connect the cable running from the switch to the router and through router to my PC. So what type of cable should I use to make the connection between the switch and the router (straight thru cable or cross over cable)? The point I am trying to make is I am able to connect to the internet using straight through cable between the switch and my PC but when I connect the same cable between the switch and the router and from router to my PC I am not able to connect to the internet. Also, if I am using the 2 pair cable (instead of 4) between the switch and the router I am able to connect to the internet but same is not true in case of 4 pair cat5 cable.

• Proffesional video editor that can handle FLV?

  I tried Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 and was not able to open my file (unsupported format). Media player can open it thanks to ffdshow (tryouts IIRC). Premiere doesnt seem to want to use ffdshow. I tried renaming it to AVI and hoped Premiere would open it via ffdshow but it didnt and i checked and disabled the dont use ffdshow option in ffdshow video decoder option. What is a good proffesional video editor that can handle FLV? All ffmpeg based editors died on it and virtualdub got close but had a bad framerate. Probably bc it didnt know it was a streaming vid and the start is 26mins of 31min video.   Hi My laptop has two os. one is windows vista. and other is Ubuntu. I am currently on ubuntu system, this is my primary OS. There are 4 partitions of my hard disk Windows OS Linux(Ubuntu OS) Data Now the problem part. The data partition is NTFS. I have mounted this partition on the location /media/windrive-a under ubuntu OS. A little while back i decided to delete the mounting of the data partition and i fired command rm -r /media/windrive-a/. To give me a shock; all my data on data drive is gone. Now, I know this is not the command to remove mounted partition. But I have committed the wrong. Is there any way i can get my data back. These are very important data for me. Please suggest.

• Raspberry Pi: mvoe home & var folders to USB HDD?

  I have a Raspberry Pi running raspian. I've installed Apache2, PHP & MySQL. Apache & MySQL are both configured to use sub-directories of /var. I'd like to use a directory on my USB HDD instead of my SD card. I'd also like to move the /home directory to the USB HDD. I'd like to avoid re-partioning my HDD if possible. I thought maybe I could use a symlink to tell raspian that /var is really at /media/USBHDD1/var and /home is really at /media/USBHDD1/home. I tried it last night but couldn't get it to work.

• E71 update my music files keep getting disconnected via USB

  Previously, i can update my music files using Oviplayer to my E71 Nokia. Now whenever i plug in my E71 i choose PC suite. i go to Oviplayer in my laptop. and i select the mobile phone section and i press the connect button, automatically my phone is disconnected via USB. the alternative is to choose media transfer or media player. The same thing happens. And the connecting screen at Ovi player is like hanged. I have previously transferred songs, but only twice. first time this has happened to me. I do not know why. I have tried several Firefox add-ons, and several stand-alone programs, and none of them will save videos from this site. I even paid for Replay Media Catcher, and it didn't work, so I got a refund. (The website for the best Firefox video downloader I have, Downloadhelper, said Replay Media Catcher worked with that site.) I have a slow internet connection, and cannot watch videos smoothly unless I can cache them. This site (4tube.com) doesn't cache, when you restart, it reloads, when you pause it stops - so I need to be able to save the videos to be able to watch them.

• In Windows 7, can a program overrride file associations not set in "Set Default Programs"?

  I am using Windows 7. I installed a media application (KMPlayer) that does not show up in the "Set Default Programs" list. Now in the KMPlayer's preferences, there's a setting to associate file types with itself. But when I tried that, I noticed that the files still default to Windows Media Player. So can I assume that no external application can change the program associated with a file type unless explicitly done via the: [Set Default Programs] or [Associate a file type ... with a program] or the [Open with...] options? Thanks in advance! Btw, I know there are utilities that can help me batch change it. I'm just more curious about the "rules" that Windows 7 has in place regarding file types and their associated programs.

• How do I upload huge files across the internet without using P2P?

  I work remotely and have 44GB of media files that I need to send back to my office. There are lots of free services out there that can handle up to 2GB, but I haven't seen talk of anything larger. We both have 50mbps+ connections, so I would rather not mail physical media (though, that is an option). Bittorrent is blocked at my corporate headquarters. We have an FTP server, but the per-user cap is 10GB. I use Citrix, but throughput is throttled to 3mbps. (44gb @ 50mbps = 4 to 5 hours... @3mbps = 5 or 6 days.) Any suggestions appreciated. • Trouble joining Windows Server 2008 to Domain

  When I try to join my new server to my existing domain I get the following error: "An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a DC in the domain being joined has failed. Please verify this client is configured to reach a DNS server that can resove DNS names in the target domain." I have tried all of the following already: Successfully pinged the domain controller. Ping the new server from the domain controller by IP address and by DNS name. Ping the DC server from the new server by IP address and by DNS name. Changed the network to DHCP (it was originally static). No joy as static or DHCP. Turned off all firewall settings. Added the domain name to 'hosts' file. Added the server name of the primary domain controller to the 'hosts' file in the new server. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help! Jim Update: With help from J. Brian Kelly (Thanks) I have managed to narrow down the problem to a DNS issue. Specifically, UDP/53 packets are being sent (they are seen in Network Monitor), but are not getting to the DNS server.
