• Dynamic Views based on view models

  I have an asp.net mvc 2 app. I need to display the same page to each user. But each user has different rights to the data. IE some can see but not edit some data, some cannot edit nor see the data. Ideally data that cannot be seen nor edited is whitespace on the view. For security reasons I want my viewmodels to be sparse as possible. By that I mean if a field cannot be seen nor edited , that field should not be on the viewmodel. Obviously I can write view for each view model but that seems wasteful. So here is my idea/wishlist Can I decorate the viewmodel with attributes and hook into a pre render event of the html helpers and tell it to do &nbsp; instead??? Can I have the html helpers output &nbsp; for entries not found on the viewmodel?? or can I easily convert a view built into code then programaticlly build the markup and then put into the render engine to be processed and viewd as html on client side??

• Does IE6 Really not Allow Me to set width/height from left/right/top/bottom???

  Building a site super quick and having it work on all my Mac browsers, I thought I'd take a gander on a friends old dell laptop with Windows XP and IE6. Nothing looks remotely correct. It's because I used lots of left/right/top/bottom (constraint) declarations to size elements proportionally to their parent's size (I didn't use percent sizes because the percents refer to the parent's size before margins and padding are applied, left/right/top/bottom refer to them after with position:absolute. I'm asking about that here :)). I've read lots these past few weeks on how horrible IE6 (and IE) is in general, but because of all the reasons people say to support it (large market share and the fear of installing better software), and because half the people in the company we're building a site for use IE6 (getting them to upgrade to Chrome slowly but surely), I thought if I could just get IE6 to render my constraints, that might help. So I am messing around with simple layouts here, and they work fine in my latest versions of Firefox, Safari, Chrome, and Opera, but IE6 is basically saying: If you haven't set a width or height on me, I'm assuming it's zero. But position:absolute; left:0px; right:0px; top:0px; bottom:0px; on a container that's width:1000px; height:1000px; should be the same as setting width:1000px; height:1000px on the child, no? Taking a quick look at the source for this, why won't IE6 render the constraint based absolutely positioned AND SIZED elements? (note: I will be messing around with that file for a while) Thanks

• Using AJAX in Rails: How do I change a button as soon as it's clicked?

  Hey! I'm teaching myself Ruby, and have been stuck on this for a couple days: I'm currently using MooTools-1.3-compat and Rails 3. I'd like to replace one button (called "Follow") with another (called "Unfollow") as soon as someone clicks on it. I'm using :remote = true and have a file ending in .js.erb that's being called...I just need help figuring out what goes in this .js file The "Follow" button is in a div with id="follow_form", but there are many buttons on the page, and they all have an id = "follow_form"...i.e. $("follow_form").set(...) replaces the first element and that's not correct. I need help replacing the button that made the call. I looked at this tutorial, but the line below doesn't work for me. Could it be because I'm using MooTools instead of Prototype? $("follow_form").update("<%= escape_javascript(render('users/unfollow')) %") ps. • Rails Form Submission, User can't be blank

  I'm trying to create an event through an event form and I keep getting a form error that says "User can't be blank". The event needs a user_id to post a feed_item showing who created the event.   Apache allows you to create a directory list (when configured) if you visit a folder with no index.html. What I want to know is, is it possible to get that same list but at a different URL? I'm already using index.html and want to keep it that way. i.e., this is what I'm looking for: http://example.com/blar/ - loads my index.html page (don't want this to change) http://example.com/blar/directory_list (I want this url to render the apache directory list instead)

  I have a IIS7/ASP.NET application running with the following configuration: Anonymous authentication (IUSR). Application Pool running as a domain account If IUSR is denied the "logon locally", then it appears that ASPX pages will still render their HTML, but static content such as images will not be delivered. I'm wondering what the technical reason is for this? If IUSR is "broken", why will a request to an ASPX page be passed down the pipeline and executed, but IIS will refuse to serve an image in the same directory?

• Mac OS X bug: Desktop & Screen Saver: image alignment preference is ignored.

  I have my desktop background set to rotate through a folder of images. Even though I have the alignment drop-down list set to "Center", the images still render as "Fill to Screen". When I change the list value to something else, then back to "Center", OR I manually click on a different image to display, well, that image is rendered as "Center". But all images that follow (via the "Change picture every x minutes" checkbox) are rendered as Fill to Screen. Any fix to this bug?

• Launch remote NX sessions using metacity while local sessions use compiz?

  I'm using gnome with compiz (gtk-window-decorator) on Arch Linux for my desktop. I installed FreeNX from the repo, but when I connect remotely it does not render any window decorations. I can make the window decorations appear and function as normal by opening a command prompt and typing: metacity --replace I'm fine with using metacity for remote sessions, but I want gtk-window-decorator when using the machine locally. Is it possible to make it run metacity for FreeNX sessions and gtk-window-decorator for local sessions?

It almost looks like Firefox is trying to render different font colours on top of eachother and blends them in the process somehow. • How can I get the Terminal raster font to display alt codes in a text editor?

  I am working on a project that includes making some ASCII art, except it isn't true ASCII art since I am using a far amount of Windows Alt codes to make it. Anyways, I wanted to make sure that as I am working on it, that it looks exactly how it will in a windows command prompt terminal session. So since command prompt defaults to the Terminal raster font, I figured I would use that. But I quickly noticed that when I use the Terminal typeface in a text editor, it will not render ASCII codes, either at all (as is the case most of the time) or incorrectly. Now, I understand if a font just doesn't support non-ASCII characters, but what I don't get is how the characters do show up correctly in command prompt when they don't in a text editor. I checked the output of the 'chcp' and it was set to 437 by default, which is what I need. Well, either that or 850 but preferably 437 since they got rid of some of the graphics in 437 and replaced them with other Latin characters. Command prompt terminal settings show I am using the Terminal raster font with a 8x12 glyph size. So I try using size 12 in the text editor but no good, even after switching the text encoding to either MS-DOS OEM-US (supposedly an alternative name for CP437) or UTF-8. I just don't get how I am not getting the characters to show up. Also, if it helps, the art I am making is basically modified screen shots from a game I play called Dwarf Fortress that uses characters from the Terminal/Curses typeset, or at least that is how it is reported in the forums by those who make graphics sets to replace the default character set. However, the game doesn't actually use the system's Terminal font. The game's data files includes a bitmap image that is a grid of all the characters the game uses. So it uses this bitmap to render graphics instead of the actual font file. And I basically want to get a text editor to make it so if I type up some ASCII art to look like a screenshot from Dwarf Fortress, that it will actually look like Dwarf Fortress other than the lack of color. Any help?

  We're looking into putting up a wiki or CMS for internal use by our IT department. One of the big things we want to use it for is disaster recovery procedures. Given that a disaster, such as a power or network outage, might render the wiki inaccessible, it seems sensible to to host the wiki in two places so that if one is inaccessible, we can fall back to the other. Are there any wikis or CMSes that synchronize (or an alternate way to achieve a similar end)?
