You need to setup your adf-config.xml file in your dev environment or Jdeveloper to access these files from MDS.   I got into an interesting internet argument about getter and setter methods and encapsulation. Someone said that all they should do is an assignment (setters) or a variable access (getters) to keep them "pure" and ensure encapsulation. Am I right that this would completely defeat the purpose of having getters and setters in the first place and validation and other logic (without strange side-effects of course) should be allowed? When should validation happen? When setting the value, inside the setter (to protect the object from ever entering an invalid state - my opinion) Before setting the value, outside the setter Inside the object, before each time the value is used Is a setter allowed to change the value (maybe convert a valid value to some canonical internal representation)?

• kubuntu wallpaper settings disappear

  To render my system useable after upgrading to 11.10, I had to abandon gnome and install the KDE window manager. This is mostly fine, but the desktop wallpaper slideshow works for a few minutes and then gets reset to the default (fixed kubuntu splash background). I can start up the slideshow again by right-clicking on the background and re-entering all the Desktop Settings, but then it just disappears again after a while. What could be causing this? Oops!   What I failed to realize was that KDE apparently uses an independent wallpaper setting for each desktop. I have 12, so some were set to the slideshow but others were still set to the default. Being accustomed to one common wallpaper setting for all desktops, I misinterpreted this as a global reset. Sorry!

• Fullscreen windowed mode in id games

  I run a TwinView, dual monitor system. I like to play games fullscreen on one of the monitors, not spanning both. With wine, this works by just setting it to desktop mode and setting the resolution to that of one screen. For OpenTTD, I used Compiz's Window Rules plugin. But I have a few native games that this doesn't work for. Today's experiment involved Prey (Doom 3 engine) but I've had similar issues with other ID engines. So in short: has anybody found a way of having Prey/OpenAreana/Doom3/etc run in windowed mode but with fullscreen decorations (that is to say, no borders and above the panel)?

• How can I record an OpenGL game in Ubuntu?

  I would like to create a short clip of me playing Minecraft, an OpenGL game. The usual screencast recorders do not properly record OpenGL. What kind of software is available for this purpose? My experience with the software in the similar (but no longer duplicate) question: kazam: very low framerate despite setting to 60 FPS, no sound, unity menubar constantly flashing through the fullscreen window. RecordMyDesktop: max framerate setting is 50 FPS, but the video becomes extremely fast if not using the default 15 FPS. xvidcap: not available on 12.04 tibesti: not available on 12.04 wink: does not run ffmpeg: very low quality video and no sound with the recommended settings, might be tunable though (no gui unfortunately). kdenlive: uses recordmydesktop, and the recorded clip becomes corrupted aconv: video sped up, often broken image, no sound

• How to prevent launcher from influencing window placement?

  As I understand it, in Ubuntu 11.04 setting the AutoHide setting on Compiz Config - Unity (see here) not only hid the launcher but prevented the launcher from influencing window placement. However, since updating to Ubuntu 11.10 when I open a new window it gets indented the space of the launcher. I just want new windows to open flush left. This is annoying, because I like to have two windows on my large screen, one taking up the left half of the screen and the other taking up the right half of the screen. Indenting causes them to overlap. How can I stop Ubuntu 11.10 thinking that the launcher takes up desktop space when placing windows? The following screen shot shows what I'm talking about. I've just opened chromium and the window is indented by the width of the launcher.

  This is a follow up blog post of SQL SERVER – QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON/OFF and ANSI_NULL ON/OFF Explanation. I wrote that blog six years ago and I had plans that I will write a follow up blog post of the same. Today, when I was going over my to-do list and I was surprised that I had an item there which was six years old and I never got to do that. In the earlier blog post I wrote about exploitation of the Quoted Identifier and ANSI Null. In this blog post we will see a quick example of Quoted Identifier. However, before we continue this blog post, let us see a refresh what both of Quoted Identifider do. QUOTED IDENTIFIER ON/OFF This option specifies the setting for use of double quotes. When this is on, double quotation mark is used as part of the SQL Server identifier (object name). This can be useful in situations in which identifiers are also SQL Server reserved words. In simple words when we have QUOTED IDENTIFIER ON, anything which is wrapped in double quotes becomes an object. E.g. -- The following will work SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON GO CREATE DATABASE "Test1" GO -- The following will throw an error about Incorrect syntax near 'Test2'. SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER OFF GO CREATE DATABASE "Test2" GO This feature is particularly helpful when we are working with reserved keywords in SQL Server. For example if you have to create a database with the name VARCHAR or INT or DATABASE you may want to put double quotes around your database name and turn on quoted identifiers to create a database with the such name. Personally, I do not think so anybody will ever create a database with the reserve keywords intentionally, as it will just lead to confusion. Here is another example to give you further clarity about how Quoted Idenifier setting works with SELECT statement. -- The following will throw an error about Invalid column name 'Column'. SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON GO SELECT "Column" GO -- The following will work SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER OFF GO SELECT "Column" GO Personally, I always use the following method to create database as it works irrespective of what is the quoted identifier’s status. It always creates objects with my desire name whenever I would like to create. CREATE DATABASE [Test3] I believe the future of the quoted identifier on or off is useful in the real world when we have script generated from another database where this setting was ON and we have to now execute the same script again in our environment again. Question to you - I personally have never used this feature as I mentioned earlier. I believe this feature is there to support the scripts which are generated in another SQL Database or generate the script for other database. • How to Delete/Disable gnome panels. No existing solutions working

  I would like to remove gnome panel completely. I spend most of my time in a (tmux) terminal or a browser. Synapse and a small hidden AWN panel fit the rest of my needs. I have tried all recommended solutions including this (found it a few places): How to delete Gnome Panel? However it always comes back at log in. I have tried changing the required components panel to avant-whatever as well as to empty. I have tried setting them both as default (right click set as default). Right now I just have the last panel set to transparent and auto hide, but it still tends to be annoying. What do I need to do to get rid of this damn thing? Clarification: Using gconf-editor, gconftool2, and/or Ubuntu tweak to set /desktop/gnome/session/required_component/panel to avant-window-navigator is not working. The setting stays when I reboot, but the empty gnome panel sticks around.

• Ubuntu 12.10 "Turn screen off when inactive for: Never" still turns off

  After a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10, my screen still goes off after about ten minutes. I've been to the Brightness and Lock control panel. The Turn screen off when inactive for: setting is set for Never. I've been through the dconf Editor searching for power, screen, and idle changing parameters. This doesn't seem to have any effect on the display timeout. Here's one more interesting thing, the screen doesn't go off, per se. It just goes black. Meaning, the back lighting is still on, and all the pixels are black. When it goes black, it does a very pleasant quick dim to black. Similarly, it quickly un-dim's after a key press, mouse movement, or mouse click. So, I'm feeling this is more of a software setting the timeout, not a power saving function.

  I'm working on my first OpenGL 2D game and I've just locked the framerate of my game. However, the way objects move is far from satisfying: they tend to lag, which is shown in this video. I've thought how more fluent animation can be achieved and started getting segmentation faults due to accessing the same object by two different threads. EDIT: I've tried increasing the FPS limit but lags are noticeable even at 200 fps.

  I currently have 63 websites (and counting) that I'm tracking on one Google Analytics account, and I'm starting to realize... this is becoming a bit cumbersome. What's the best way to collect traffic data in bulk? Are there other resources out there that are better suited for this task? Does Google offer a bulk option for this kind of thing? Would it be better to make separate analytics accounts? I'm just wondering if anyone else has had found a better solution that manually setting up all these accounts/setting up the tracking codes etc, when it comes to large scale management.

  How does one configure Radeon video cards when using the open source Radeon driver - power profile, vsync, etc? Why I try the widely documented solution (against overheating) that worked for me under LMDE (confirmed with kernels up to 3.12.6), I get the following error: $ sudo cat /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile default $ sudo sh -c "echo mid > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile" sh: echo: I/O error Exit 1 And when I try suggestions from Arch's ATI wiki my modifications are simply ignored: $ sudo cat /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_dpm_force_performance_level auto $ sudo sh -c "echo high> /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_dpm_force_performance_level" $ sudo cat /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_dpm_force_performance_level auto Is this something Ubuntu specific, or something introduced with the 3.13 version of the Radeon driver? I'm encountering this on 2 laptops, one with a Radeon HD6290 (integrated GPU), the other with a discrete RV710 card. The RV710 needs a specific power setting to prevent overheating under LMDE, fortunately it doesn't seem to overheat with the Ubuntu default setting.

• In the context of semantic versioning, does a change in the default configuration warrant a new major version?

  My module is enabled by default (i.e. when you add the module). There's also a configuration you can optionally use, which supports an enabled="true|false" setting. This way the module can be disabled after it's been added, without the need to remove the module. But I realized the module doesn't play nicely with another module that is also enabled by default. I am considering changing my module so it's not be enabled by default. This would break for anyone that has not explicitly enabled it with the enabled="true" configuration setting. Should I wait for v2.0 for this? semver.org mentions the public API and breaking changes, not configuration. Is it generally accepted that configuration is part of the public API?

• Dark Sun Dispatch 001.5 (a review of City Under The Sand)

  City Under The Sand - a review I'm moderately familiar with the Dark Sun setting. I've read the other Dark Sun novels, ages ago and I recently started running a D&D 4.0 campaign in the Dark Sun world, so I picked up this book to help re-familiarize myself with the setting. Overall, it did accomplish that, in a limited way. The book takes place in Nibenay and a neighboring expanse of desert that includes a formerly buried city, a small town and a bandit outpost. The book does a more interesting job of describing Nibenese politics and the court of the ruling Sorcerer King, his templars and the expected jockeying for position that occurs between the Templar Wives. There is a fair amount of combat, which was interesting and fairly well detailed. The ensemble cast is introduced and eventually brought together over the first few chapters. Not a lot of backstory on most of the characters, but you get a feel for them fairly quickly. The storyline was somewhat predictable after the first third of the book. Some of the reviews on Amazon complain about the 2-dimensional characterizations, and yes there were some... but it's easy to ignore because there is a lot going on in the book... several interwoven plotlines that all eventually converge. Where the book falls short... First, it appears to have been edited by a 4th grader who knows how to use spellcheck but lacks the attention to detail to notice the frequent occurence of incorrect words that often don't make sense or change the context of the entire sentence. It happened just enough to be distracting, and honestly I expect better from WOTC. Second, there is a lot of buildup to the end of the story... the big fight, the confrontation between good and evil, etc... which is handled in just a few pages and then the story basically just ends. Kind of a letdown, honestly. There wasn't a big finish, and it wasn't a cliffhanger, it just wraps up neatly and ends. It felt pretty rushed. Overall, aside from the very end, I enjoyed it. I really liked the insight into that region of Athas and it gave me some good ideas for fleshing out my own campaign. In that sense, the book served its purpose for me. If you're looking for a light read (got a 5-6 hour flight somewhere?) or you want to learn more about the Dark Sun setting, then I'd recommend this book.

• System Settings icons missing

  Is there any way to reset the System Settings Control Panel page? The Control Panel was fine, but the for no apparent reason, PRIVACY, BACKGROUND and a host of other icons have vanished... My system seems pretty messed up after the upgrade... Shutdown, Reset, and Logout from the menu no longer work either... However, I can launch the Privacy panel from the terminal: activity-log-manager and it runs... so why is this, and others, now missing from the System Setting Control Panel? I have checked and: activity-log-manager-control-center is installed Is there a config file I can check, or a setting in Gconf where the list of icons are referenced? I have run - in desperation - sudo apt-get purge unity* sudo apt-get purge ubuntu* sudo apt-get autoremove Run Gconf-cleaner and Janitor then re-installed all packages Still the same issue....?

• Change the brightness adjustment interval

  So whenever I hit my dim/brighten keys on the keyboard, a notification bubble pops up with the screen brightness. All that's fine, but I would like to be able to change how much the brightness changes with each key press. For example, right now it takes just 5 presses to go from the completely dark to the brightest setting. However, I know from the "Brightness/Lock" setting that the screen is capable of much smaller intervals than this. Is there a way to change how much the brightness jumps each time the keys are pressed?

• Loud fans despite cool system under Linux (but not Windows)

  My new desktop computer runs almost silently under Windows, but the fans seem to run on a constantly high setting under Linux. Psensor shows that the GPU (with NVidia drivers) is thirty-something degrees and the CPU is about the same, so it's not just down to Linux somehow being more processor-intensive. I've read that the BIOS controls the fans under Linux, which makes sense given the high fan speeds when in BIOS as well. It's under Windows, when the ASUS AI Suite 3 software seems to take control, that the system runs more quietly and only speeds the fans up when required. So is there a Linux app which offers a similar dynamic control of the fans, or a setting hidden somewhere in the ASUS BIOS which allows the same but regardless of the OS? EDIT - I've tried using lm-sensors and fancontrol, but pwmconfig tells me "There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed". This is after the sensors-detect command does find an 'Intel digital thermal sensor', and despite the sensors working fine in apps like psensor. Help getting this to work would likely solve the problem.

  Does anyone know what configuration file is modified when I change settings within this area of the system settings? I keep choosing my Logitech USB Headset as the soundard, and, when I hit apply, it accepts that change and all is good. However, as soon as I close the system settings window, it loses the setting, so I have to leave it open all the time. How can I make this setting permanent? Thanks for any assistance. I'm actually running Kubuntu 11.10.

  I have Kubuntu 12.04 installed on HP 430 Notebook PC. My problem is that when I press Super Key, nothing happened. Some of my Fn keys did not work either. I have changed the Keyboard Model in System SettingsHardwareInput DevicesKeyboard to Hewlett Packard Internet keyboard but doesn't seems to help. I have also Compiz-Config-Setting-Manager installed but I don't know how to make the right keyboard setting. I would like to have the Super Key launch Start Menu Launcher as in MS-Windows, is it possible ... Thanks for the help

• Pros and cons of creating a print friendly page to remove the use of pdfs?

  the company I work for has a one page invoice that uses the library tcpdf. they wanted to do some design changes that I found are just incredibly difficult for setting up in .pdf format. Using html/css I could easily create the page and have it print very nicely, but I have a feeling that I am over looking something. What are the pros and cons of setting up a page just for printing? What are the pros and cons of putting out a .pdf? I could also use the CSS inline so that if they wanted to download it and open it they could.
