But I will have to do the setup all over again (setting up applications/updates). Plus many of my preferences and tweaks I've had in my desktop will be lost and those too I will have to all over again.   I have a few questions that have been bothering me for quite a while, maybe you guys can give me some tips. So let me give a very brief explanation about what I am doing at the moment (like someone cares lol). At the moment I am a last year student on computer science. And like most of you already know is that you won't learn deep programming there, you need to learn it yourself. So at the moment I know like the basics of c++, java, html, php. But it's all bits of this and bits of that. I seriously want to dive deeper in the programming world but there are so many programming languages on the web and there is so much information that i don't know where to start any more.. And that's not the biggest issue, I also lost a bit of my motivation for programming and I like to get more motivation for it so that I love what I do (I am also a very lazy person btw, that's also a problem playing here). So can you guys give me some tips for helping me, because I really want to get pumped up and make cool stuff. (sry for my bad english XD)

• Transitioning from Internal to Public Speaking

  For whatever reason, I've always enjoyed giving presentations. As a developer, I've grown from giving the rare presentation when asked to frequently doing 'brown bag' talks and other presentations on new technology, projects etc. I'd like to expand as a presenter and start giving talks in public, outside of just my workplace, and I'm looking for tips on how to get there. At a high level, I'd love to know a good path to take & useful tips to help me grow from just giving internal talks to my group (10-20 people) to eventually be a presenter at medium-large sized conferences. Here are some specific questions, but I will take any advice you can offer: 1. How much experience do I need to speak at user groups etc? I've been in industry for around 5 years, which pales in comparison to most speakers that I normally see. 2. What is a good venue for my 1st public talk? 3. What surprises can I expect when transistioning from speaking to a small group of friends to presenting in public to strangers? I live in southern California and my background is mostly .net / web, so if you have any specific user group / venues those are also greatly appreciated.

  as a new linux user, used Ubuntu 12.10, I tried several tweaks with the SMB shares. I followed this tutorial to mount permanently 4 SMB shares from my local NAS. To resume, I : edit /etc/fstab added a line like : //servername/sharename /media/windowsshare cifs credentials=/home/ubuntuusername/.smbcredentials,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0 created a credentials file for security reasons in my home folder (explained in the tutorial) ~/.smbcredentials It work perfectly, they are automounted on each reboot, but when I logon, I all the time get 4 file explorer open with each share. It is possible to avoid these file explorer window to be opened on every reboot ? I guess it's related to X or via a explicit deny or these graphical mount, but I don't have any clues on how to proceed Thank you for your time,

• View the Time & Date in Chrome When Hiding Your Taskbar

  Do you prefer keeping your Taskbar hidden but still need to keep watch on what time it is? Now you can keep track of the time without the Taskbar using the Date Today extension for Google Chrome. A Look at Date Today with Different Themes This extension does one thing and does it well…it provides you with an “active icon” clock that will let you view the time and date in two fashions. The first is by hovering your mouse over the “Toolbar Clock Button”… And the second is by clicking on the “Toolbar Clock Button” to view an enlarged version. Here you can see the extension in use with five different themes to get an idea of how it might look with the theme that you are currently using. It does stand out very nicely with brighter or darker colored themes. Conclusion While this extension is obviously not for everyone it will make a nice (and useful) addition to Chrome for those who prefer keeping their Taskbar hidden. • How To Figure Out Your PC’s Host Name From the Command Prompt

  If you’re doing any work with networking, you probably need to know the name of your computer. Rather than diving into Control Panel, there’s a really simple way to do this from the command prompt. Note: If you haven’t already, be sure to read our complete guide to networking Windows 7 with XP and Vista. To see the hostname… all you have to do is type hostname at the command prompt. Go figure, eh? The same thing works in Linux or OS X, though you can see that most of the time the hostname is part of the prompt anyway. Note: you can also change the hostname by simply typing “hostname <newhostname>”. Of course, the easiest way to see your computer name in Windows is to just hit the Win+Break key combination, which will pop up the System pane from Control Panel.   If you want to change it instead, you can always change your computer name easily through Control Panel. • Ubuntu 12.04 Battery problem

  I have my laptop ( Dell Inspiron 14R) on dual boot with Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7. While using Windows 7, I used to get about 2.5-3 hours on battery fully charged (with my cellphone connected for 3g Internet). The battery is almost 2 years old. But in Ubuntu 12.04, I'm getting only about 1-1.5 hrs on battery. I tried installing jupiter, also tried some tweaks that were mentioned in the forums, like editing the grub file. But nothing seems to work. I am not sure if any app is draining the battery. The one application that I use always is firefox. It's always open. Is there any way I could get at least 2.5 hrs of battery time?

• Ubuntu 12.10 Laptop temperature

  I'm using a laptop having dedicated graphics card with Ubuntu and Windows 7 dual boot. The windows 7 idle temperature for cpu is 51C average and gpu is 46-48.5C, and when in load Cpu temp varies between 55-61C, and GPU 49-51 MAX. But in ubuntu idle temp CPU: 54c Gpu(ati radeon,proprietary driver installed): 50C and on load cpu: 58-69C gpu:53C max. Is it normal? If not is there any solution? Note that i'm using jupiter,latest graphics driver, grub tweaks etc.

• UbuntuOne: how to sync folders on different partitions (symlink?)

  I use Ubuntu One to synch my home/Documents folder among more computers. On a portable tablet I have set the Documents folder in a separate Fat32 partition named sda6, and I made it default documents folder with Ubuntu Tweaks. How do I synchronize it with my /Documents cloud ? I tried to link /sda/Documents in my home folder but it didn't succeed: UbuntuOne still tries to set an own Documents folder and doesn't let me sync the linked folder with the cloud. While some texts are obviously unique to each view (v.g. the html title), other refer to concepts from the model (v.g. a ticket, the location or status of such ticket, etc.) As usual, some terms will appear many times in different locations (vg, in both the edition page and in the search page and in the listings I have a "ticketLocation" label). My question is: can I organize the labels around the model concepts (so I have a ticket.location label and I use it everywhere such field is labeled) or should I make a different label for each (so form.ticketLocation and filter.ticketLocation and list.ticketLocation). I would go for the first option; I have searched for tips and the only thing that I see that could hinder me is due to the length of the string disrupting the design, and even for that I would prefer having to add a ticket.locationShort for places where there is not much space. What is your opinion/tips/experience?

• How can I fix unreliable Unity startup?

  When I log in, either Unity loads perfectly or it just doesn't; all I see is my desktop background. Commands don't seem to work and I can't switch to the terminal view. No matter how long I wait, Unity doesn't start. I never had this issue with Oneiric Ocelot. Other GUIs such as GNOME 3.4 don’t seem to be having that issue. I've got MyUbuntu, Ubuntu Tweaks, CompizConf and other tweaking tools installed. Could they be causing the problem? If not, what should I do? I'd really like to use Unity again. Thanks in advance!
