  • "Can't find root filesystem / error mounting /dev/root" when booting to new kernel

    I am trying to upgrade my kernel from 2.6.18-274 to 2.6.39 for some wireless card drivers. When I boot into the new kernel I get the "Can't find root filesystem / error mounting /dev/root" googling led me to this page http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Common_kernel_problems#Can.27t_find_root_filesystem_.2F_error_mounting_.2Fdev.2Froot From what I am reading seems to be an issue with a driver for my SATA controller or HD, but I can't find what option I need to add to the kernel. Doing a diff from the old initrd to the new one gives me the following: root-> diff /tmp/kafter /tmp/kbefore 6a7,8 > lib/dm-message.ko > lib/dm-region_hash.ko 8a11 > lib/dm-raid45.ko 13d15 < lib/dm-region-hash.ko 16a19 > lib/dm-mem-cache.ko Do I need any of those? not sure if I would need dm-raid45.ko as I am not running a raid. I have the same SATA and IDE options configured for both kernels so not sure what else to look for, any help is appreciated.   • Outlook 2010 - Missing New Mail Envelope Icon

    I've seen a number of posts related to this issue, but none with a solution that works for me. I have: Windows 7 Professional 64 bit Office/Outlook 2010 "Show an envelope icon in the taskbar" checked "Hide When Minmized" selected "Show icon and notifications" selected for Outlook in my taskbar settings This used to show me the envelope icon in my notifications area. Then something happened with my user profile and the sys admins created me a new one. Since then, the envelope only displays if Outlook is not minimized. It doesn't matter if I unselect "Hide When Minmized", the icon still doesn't display when new mail arrives. If I select "Display a Desktop Alert", then the icon is displayed. However, I HATE the desktop alert as I find it too intrusive/distracting. Is there some way to just get the envelope icon working (again)? UPDATE More testing and sometimes I will and sometimes I won't get an envelope icon with the desktop alert turned on. This is driving me nuts!! UPDATE TWO I like my notification area of the taskbar to be clean. So, all icons are set to "Only show notifications" except for Outlook as noted above. I've noticed the envelope icon is being displayed in the expanded notification area when I click on the up arrow to view all icons. So, it is being added to the notification area, but not displayed. It's a rather useless feature now...

  • Installing a new Motherboard in a HP xw6200 case

    I have a HP xw6200 Workstation, that is rather long in the tooth, and with 2 physical CPUs, it is quite inefficient. So, the plan was to upgrade the internals. Nothing special: AMD Athlon II X4 640 ASUS M4A78KT-M LE (mATX) 2x 2GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM. 3p under my £150 budget The issues: The pin connector for the front panel isn't a good fit, but I can trim it to size. The PSU has a 8-Pin Power connector, unsurprisingly, the new board has a 4 pin socket. The pins do line up, but I would have to cut it in half to fit. Finally, due to the weight of heat-sinks, they are screwed directly into the case. It turns out that these screws also lock the motherboard in place. As to remove it, you remove the heat-sinks, slide the motherboard across and lift it out. I tested the new board for fit, and while it slots in fine, it's not secure. There is nowhere to screw the board down, it is just held in place with plastic standoffs. The only idea I had, was to wedging something between the side of the motherboard and part of the case. Any suggestions?

Now if I want to end the comment series I have several options: hit <Esc>S hit <BS> three times Both of these afford three keystrokes, taken together with the <Enter> this means four keystrokes for a new line, which I think is too much. Ideally, I would like to just hit <Enter> a second time to be left with: // this is a comment * It is important that the solution will also work with different indentation levels, i.e. int main(void) { // this is a comment* } hit <Enter> int main(void) { // this is a comment // * } hit <Enter> int main(void) { // this is a comment * } I think I have seen this feature in some text editor a few years ago but I do not recall which one it was.   • Directory service unavailiable, new hardware same settings

    I'm working on a project with 2 sites connected by a VPN. Site 1 has the main server and there is a secondary server at site 2 which I am trying to replace. The current setup works perfectly however I can't for the life of me get the replacement server at site 2 up and running. I'm trying to replace like for like just upgraded hardware. I have installed the OS (all Server 2003 Standard SP2) and used exactly the same settings as the old server. I have setup Active Directory, DNS Server, DHCP Server and WINS Server configured. I have used all the same settings as the old server (except IP address and name). I can access the active directory but I can't do anything; add, edit, delete all returns "the directory service is unavaliable". No-one can login on any of the computers on site 2 and the internet is down. Plugging the old server back in and connecting it to the network rectifies the issue (so both new and old are connected at site 2), everyone can login and the internet is back (curious since the modem connects direct to the switch, and even with the new server online I can connect to the router via IP but not the net). I really don't have much experience but I've been roped into doing this because my company is too cheap to hire a real network admin. Any suggestions of where I can start to troubleshoot this, its driving me crazy and I only have a day before all the users are back on site.

  • 100% CPU use when new usb device plugged in - services.exe / Windows Server 2003

    On my server I am trying to install a new usb drive but all that happens is that the system starts using huge amounts of processor cycles with services.exe. On closer inspection with process explorer there is a thread called umpnpmgr.dll using most of the services.exe processor time. I left it for a half hour and still nothing happened. Rebooted and tried again, same result. Tried a different usb drive, then a flash drive but still same issue. Tried updating driver but it said the update function was already in action. I have used process explorer to kill the thread now so the server can still perform its intended functions. Any device that was previously installed before this began happening will still work but any device new to the system will not. My question(s) is/are: Is there a way to manually install the device into the registry so Windows thinks it is a previously installed device? Or can this problem be repaired through anything other than a reinstall? To do a reinstall would mean backing up large amounts of data which is hard with a usb drive and insufficient space on all other network machines. Any help would be greatly appreciated. William

    Hi, I'm trying to call a thread on a button click (btn_more) but i cant get it right. The thread is to get some data and update the images. The problem i have is if i only update 4 or 5 images then it works fine. But if i load more than 5 images i will get a force close. At times when the internet is slow I will face the same problem too. Can please help me to solve this problem or provide me some guidance?     Hi Could someone tell me how to add a new line in a text that i enter in a mySql table. I tried using the '\n in the line i entered with INSERT INTO statement but '\n is shown as it is. Actually i have created a table in Ms Access with some data. Ms Access adds new line with '\n. I am converting Ms Access table data into mySql . But when i convert, the '\n is ignored and all the text is shown in one single line when i display it from mySql table on a php form. Can anyone tell me how mySQL can add a new line in a text ?     Hi guys, I haven't coded in C++ in ages. And recently, I'm trying to work on something involving structs. Like this typedef struct{ int x; int y; } Point; Then in a loop, I'm trying to create new structs and put pointers to them them in a list. Point* p; int i, j; while (condition){ // compute values for i and j with some function... p = new Point; p* = {i, j}; //initialize my struct. list.append(p); //append this pointer to my list. } Now, my question is it possible to simplify this? I mean, the pointer variable *p outside of the loop and calling p = new Point inside the loop. Isn't there a better/nicer syntax for this?

    I'm developing a new language. My initial target was to compile to native x86 for the Windows platform, but now I am in doubt. I've seen some new languages target the JVM (most notable Scala and Clojure). Ofcourse it's not possible to port every language easily to the JVM; to do so may lead to small changes to the language and it's design. After posing this question, I even doubted more about this decision. I now know some "pro" JVM arguments. The original question was: is targetting the JVM a good idea, when creating a compiler for a new language? Updated the question: What are the disadvantages of targeting the JVM instead of x86 on Windows?

  • How to declare a pointer to a variable as a parameter of a function in C++?

    I have a function that takes a pointer to a D3DXVECTOR3, but I have no reason to declare this beforehand. The most logical solution to me was using new: Function( //other parameters, new D3DXVECTOR3(x, y, 0)); but I don't know how I would go about deleting it, beign intitialized in a function. My next thought was to use the & operator, like so: Function( //other parameters, &D3DVECTOR3(x, y, 0)); but I don't know if this is a valid way to go about doing this. (It doesn't get an error, but neither does int *x; x = 50;). So should I use new, &, or some other technique I'm overlooking?

    all my domains and created account work fine, but this domain which i created yesterday, each time i visit it, it redirects from domain.com to domain.com/cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi. so i deleted it and re-created it, still same issue.. deleted the dns, rcreated new dns, then did cleanup and deleted dns and recreated.. do you know how can i fix it?

    Using Ubuntu server, I need to create some user accounts that have the following limitations: (1) User may only view and manipulate files in their home directory. (2) User may only execute commands related to rsync and sftp. I want users to be able to backup files using rsync, and I want them to be able retrieve files using an sftp client like FileZilla. Other than this, I don't want users to be able to view other files on the system, or execute any commands that might mess with the system. I'm more of an Ubuntu Desktop user, and have very little experience administering a linux server. Most tutorials I've found assume I know things that I don't know. So I'm having difficulty setting this up.

Any pointers on where to look to figure out what's going on? I don't know anything about SpamAssassin; someone else usually manages this but I'm free right now and am trying to figure out what the problem is because it's been annoying us for a while and we only just realized this bug was still affecting us. Update: I've lowered the score for the FH_DATE_PAST20XX rule to 0.1, both in /etc/spamassassin/local.cf and /usr/share/spamassassin/50_scores.cf and it's still giving 3.188 points for this rule. Any idea what's going on? This really has me stumped. Update 2: It seems that after restarting amavisd, it's been fixed. What's the difference between amavisd and spamd? It seems like both should not be running, or something.

Any idea what's going on? This really has me stumped. Update 2: It seems that after restarting amavisd, it's been fixed. What's the difference between amavisd and spamd? It seems like both should not be running, or something.

  • setting rpmforge repository for Linux (RHEL)

    Hello, I had a Linux centos(5.5) machine, on this i had deployed amavisd (with clamav and spamassassin). Referred these: http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Amavisd http://wiki.centos.org/PackageManagement/Yum/Priorities Now I have a linux RHEL machine, details are as follows: (Linux version 2.6.18-164.6.1.el5 ([email protected]) (gcc version 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-46)) x86_64 GNU/Linux Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.5 (Tikanga)) I want to set up the above mentioned software's on this(RHEL) machine, for that I do (as per the reference link): install yum-priorities but i am unable to install this on my said machine, because the default yum repository provided by RHEL doesn't contain this. How can i deploy the above software's on my RHEL machine, suggest any safe alternate. Please guide since i am a newbie in this matter. thanks in advance Ashish Sharma

Here are the differences: Laptop #1: 4GB Ram, Intel Core i5 2450M 2nd Gen processor w/ 2.5 Ghz clockspeed NVIDIA GeForce GT 520MX DDR3 1 GB Dedicated Graphics 750 GB SATA II Hard disk USB 2.0 Ports 6 hrs battery life Laptop #2: 4 GB Ram, Intel Core i5 3210M 3rd Gen processor w/ 2.5 Ghz clockspeed Integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 500 GB SATA Hard disk USB 3.0 Ports 3 hrs battery life (This concerns me) First and foremost, does dedicated graphics matter for a casual gamer like me? Secondly, does the generation of the processors make a difference despite the same clockspeed. Thirdly, do usb 3.0 ports make a difference? And lastly, which laptop is more future proof?   • New drivers, now switchable graphics won't work

    I have an ASUS notebook with dual AMD/ATI graphic cards. Before I've been able to switch individual programs in the Vision Control Center from high performance to energy saving and the other way around. But today I updated the drivers using the AMD Mobility to version 12.10, and now every time I try to configure switchable graphics it either shuts down or does not come up at all. I have a new menu item called Global Switchable Graphics settings though. Any thoughts on this?
