  • Does importing of packages change visibility of classes?

    I jsut learned that A class may be declared with the modifier public, in which case that class is visible to all classes everywhere. If a class has no modifier (the default, also known as package-private), it is visible only within its own package. This is a clear statement. But this information interfere with my understanding of importing of packages (which easily can be wrong). I thought that importing a package I make classes from the imported package visible to the importing class. So, how does it work? Are public classes visible to all classes everywhere under condition that the package containing the public class is imported? Or there is not such a condition? What about the package-private classes? They are invisible no mater if the containing package was imported or not? ADDED: It seems to me that I got 2 answers which are marked as good (up-voted) and which contradict eachother.

  • Correct way to add objects to an ArrayList

    I am trying to add an object to an arraylist but when I view the results of the array list, it keeps adding the same object over and over to the arraylist.     When I try to use assertNotLesser or assertNotGreater I get compile error .. and eclipse suggest me to create a new method called like this .. http://junit-addons.sourceforge.net/junitx/framework/ComparableAssert.html I found it here I never used these options before but I need to write this test, I can do it jmock as well but I don't know how .. I need to compare my expected results let say 0, if the real result is greater that the test should fail.

  • Refactoring a long method that simply populates

    I am refactoring a method which is over 500 lines (don't ask me why) The method basically queries a list of maps from the database and for each map in the list does some computation and adds the value of that computation to the map. There are however too many computations and puts being done that the code has reached over 500 lines already!     Currently, my code would construct the GWT form, which user would submit directly to openId (or any authenticaiton service). Such a method works fine. However, what if I had the gwt page server access the OpenID provider, is there a way/strategy for the server to mediate authentication between its client and the auth provider? I wish to know the answers with respect to GAE as the proxy and, regardless if GAE or Tomcat is the intended proxy, answers wrt Google Accounts OpenID OAuth If so, it would be wonderful if someone could describe the installation strategy.

  • How do I calculate a good hash code for a list of strings?

    Background: I have a short list of strings. The number of strings is not always the same, but are nearly always of the order of a “handful” In our database will store these strings in a 2nd normalised table These strings are never changed once they are written to the database. We wish to be able to match on these strings quickly in a query without the performance hit of doing lots of joins. So I am thinking of storing a hash code of all these strings in the main table and including it in our index, so the joins are only processed by the database when the hash code matches. So how do I get a good hashcode? I could: Xor the hash codes of all the string together Xor with multiply the result after each string (say by 31) Cat all the string together then get the hashcode Some other way So what do people think? (If you care we are using .NET and SqlServer)

    Hello, I need a hint concerning MVC and Observer-Pattern. For example a model contains the classes "Address" and "Person". The Address class contains the fields street:String, zipcode:String, location:String. Whereas the Person class contains the fields name:String, firstName:String, address:Address. My approach so far looks something like this: Both, Address and Person are observable. If one of their setters is being called, I validate whether the current value and new value differ. Only in this case an update event is fired. The event contains the source, the name of the changed field, the old and the new value. The class for the view contains text fields to display and edit the information of a person: name, firstname, street, zipcode, location. It knows the Person model and is an subscribed observer for the person. So it gets the update events from the person object. My questions concerns the address field from type Address in the person class, since an address is observable on its own. If the view gets an update event from person when a new address has been set, I can update all of the address related fields in the view. But what if a field of the address changes? Should the view also register for update events from the address? Any hints about common design approaches would be appreciated. Greetings.

Then how do you handle different instantiation scenarios (creating of the objects through an library [like Hibernate], creating objects with "new" ...)?   • How to -accurately- measure size in pixels of text being drawn on a canvas by drawTextOnPath()

    I'm using drawTextOnPath() to display some text on a Canvas and I need to know the dimensions of the text being drawn. I know this is not feasible for paths composed of multiple segments, curves, etc. but my path is a single segment which is perfectly horizontal. I am using Paint.getTextBounds() to get a Rect with the dimensions of the text I want to draw. I use this rect to draw a bounding box around the text when I draw it at an arbitrary location. Here's some simplified code that reflects what I am currently doing: // to keep this example simple, always at origin (0,0) public drawBoundedText(Canvas canvas, String text, Paint paint) { Rect textDims = new Rect(); paint.getTextBounds(text,0, text.length(), textDims); float hOffset = 0; float vOffset = paint.getFontMetrics().descent; // vertically centers text float startX = textDims.left; / 0 float startY = textDims.bottom; float endX = textDims.right; float endY = textDims.bottom; path.moveTo(startX, startY); path.lineTo(endX, endY); path.close(); // draw the text canvas.drawTextOnPath(text, path, 0, vOffset, paint); // draw bounding box canvas.drawRect(textDims, paint); } The results are -close- but not perfect. If I replace the second to last line with: canvas.drawText(text, startX, startY - vOffset, paint); Then it works perfectly. Usually there is a gap of 1-3 pixels on the right and bottom edges. The error seems to vary with font size as well. Any ideas? It's possible I'm doing everything right and the problem is with drawTextOnPath(); the text quality very visibly degrades when drawing along paths, even if the path is horizontal, likely because of the interpolation algorithm or whatever its using behind the scenes. I wouldnt be surprised to find out that the size jitter is also coming from there.

    Look at this piece of code: MessageParser parser = new MessageParser(); for (int i = 0; i < 10000; i++) { parser.parse(plainMessage, user); } For some reason, it runs SLOWER (by about 100ms) than for (int i = 0; i < 10000; i++) { MessageParser parser = new MessageParser(); parser.parse(plainMessage, user); } Any ideas why? The tests were repeated a lot of times, so it wasn't just random. How could creating an object 10000 times be faster than creating it once?

  • Use of mouselisteners in a jTable

    I have a jTable with columns 'Job_no' and 'Status'with values such as: Job_no Status 1 Active 2 Pending 3 Pending I would like it so that if a user clicks on a Status say in this case the first 'Pending'(where Job_no = 2) an inputDialog pops up allowing the user to change the status of the cell clicked-how can I do this? Bear in mind you will also have to retrieve the Job_no(that corresponds to that status) somehow, and that, though I'm OK with JOptionPane's, I'm new to JTables. I'm using JDBC(mySQL) and have a table 'Jobs' which amongst other things, has column Job_no and status. Thanks for your help.

    I have some philosophical feeling that adding to an entity fields which doesn't mapped to the DB is a wrong way of solving problems. But are there any concrete situations where using @Transient fields leads to implicit and hard fixing problems? For example, is it possible that adding/removing 2nd level cache will break our app when there are @Transient fields in our entities?
