• How to have Windows 7 remember a password for a Domain

  About eighteen months ago, I wrote a post covering how to clear saved passwords in Windows XP.  This week at work I was reminded how useful it is to not only deleted saved passwords, but to also setup wildcard credentials using this same interface. The scenario that I run into as consultant working at a client site, is that my laptop is not a member of the Windows Domain that my client uses to secure their network. So, when I need to access file shares, shared printers, or even the clients internal websites, I’m prompted for a name and password.  By creating a wildcard entry on my laptop (for the user account that the client issued to me), I avoid this prompt and can seamlessly access these resources.  (This also works when you’ve configured Outlook to access Exchange via RPC over HTTP.) How to create a credential wild card entry in Windows 7: Go to your Start Menu --> Type "user" into the Search box Click on the “Manage your credentials” in the column on the left Click on the “Add a Windows credential” link Enter the Domain (in my case my client’s domain), something like this: *.contoso.com Enter the username and password That’s it.  You should now be able to access resources in that Domain without being prompted for your name and password.  Please note: if you are required to change your password periodically for that domain, you’ll need to update your saved password as well.

• Is individual code ownership important?

  I'm in the midst of an argument with some coworkers over whether team ownership of the entire codebase is better than individual ownership of components of it. I'm a huge proponent of assigning every member of the team a roughly equal share of the codebase. It lets people take pride in their creation, gives the bug screeners an obvious first place to assign incoming tickets, and helps to alleviate "broken window syndrome". It also concentrates knowledge of specific functionality with one (or two) team members making bug fixes much easier. Most of all, it puts the final say on major decisions with one person who has a lot of input instead of with a committee. I'm not advocating for requiring permission if somebody else wants to change your code; maybe have the code review always be to the owner, sure. Nor am I suggesting building knowledge silos: there should be nothing exclusive about this ownership. But when suggesting this to my coworkers, I got a ton of pushback, certainly much more than I expected. So I ask the community: what are your opinions on working with a team on a large codebase? Is there something I'm missing about vigilantly maintaining collective ownership?

• Virtualization in Ubuntu 11.10

  Since Ubuntu 11.10 use a new kernel, it's very difficult to have a decent support for virtualization. VirtualBox doesn't support guest additions for ubuntu 11.10, so I can't copy to and from my ubuntu desktop and windows, which I absolutely require, plus FreeBSD seems not to be able to use DHCP without guest additions. Virt-manager instead gives an error on launch: Unable to open a connection to the libvirt management daemon. Libvirt URI is: qemu:///system Verify that: - The 'libvirt-bin' package is installed - The 'libvirtd' daemon has been started - You are member of the 'libvirtd' group unable to connect to '/var/run/libvirt/libvirt-sock', libvirtd may need to be started: Permission denied Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/share/virt-manager/virtManager/connection.py", line 1146, in _open_thread self.vmm = self._try_open() File "/usr/share/virt-manager/virtManager/connection.py", line 1130, in _try_open flags) File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/libvirt.py", line 102, in openAuth if ret is None:raise libvirtError('virConnectOpenAuth() failed') libvirtError: unable to connect to '/var/run/libvirt/libvirt-sock', libvirtd may need to be started: Permission denied The problem is solved by running virt-manager as root, but I don't like that. • Registering in the iOS developer program as a minor

  Hi there. Recently I started learning to develop Apps for iOS, and while the simulator is fine for starting out, I've gotten to the point that I really should be testing the Apps I write on an actual device. As I'm sure you are well aware, to do this you must be a member of the $99/year iOS developer program, which also allows you to publish on the App Store. I'm more than happy to pay the fee, but my problem is that I'm still a minor, and to join the developer program you must be over 18 in the U.S. (I'm not sure how it works in other countries). I've talked to a few others that were in a similar position, but their responses have been varied. From what I've gathered, the best course of action is to register in the name of one of my parents. My problem with this is that if I were to ever publish an App on the store, it would be ideal to have my name as the seller instead of my Dad's. It wouldn't be the end of the world if this happened, but as I said, this wouldn't be ideal. Now I turn to you; is this a good plan? Have any of you been in this position or known somebody who has? Any other tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

• How to sell logistical procedures that require less time to perform but more finesse?

  I am working with a group where part of the responsibilities is managing a certain set of configuration files which, of course, have the same skeleton/structure across different environments but different values (like server, user, this setting, that setting etc.). Pretty classic scenario... The problem is that everyone just goes and modifies final, environment-specific files and basically repeats the work for every environment. Personally, I am offended to have to peform repeatable, mundane tasks in this day and age when we have technologies to automate it all. So I devised a very simple procedure of abstracting the files into templates, stubbing env-specific values with parameters and then wrote a simple Perl script that, given a template and an environment matrix with env-specific values for each param, produces the final file. So this is nothing special, cutting-edge or revolutionary -- I am pretty sure that 20 years ago efficient places did their CM like that. However, that requires that changes are made at the template level and then distributed across different environments using the script and not making changes in the final environment-specific files. This is where I am encountering resentment as they feel "comfortable" doing it their old, manual, repeated labor way. Personally, I don't have a problem with them working hard rather than smart but the problem is when I have to build on top of someone else's changes, I have to merge their changes into my template from a specific file, which takes time and is grueling. So my question is how to go about selling my method, which makes it so much faster in an environment that is resentful to change and where most things have to be done at the level of the least competent team member?

  I tried to find through various sources but still unable to understand difference between routed events and attached events in WPF. Most of the places of reference for attached event following example is used: <StackPanel Button.Click="StackPanel_Click"> <Button Content="Click Me!" Height="35" Width="150" Margin="5" /> </StackPanel> Explained as: stack panel do not contain Click event and hence Button.Click event is attached to Stack Panel. Where as msdn says: You can also name any event from any object that is accessible through the default namespace by using a typename.event partially qualified name; this syntax supports attaching handlers for routed events where the handler is intended to handle events routing from child elements, but the parent element does not also have that event in its members table. This syntax resembles an attached event syntax, but the event here is not a true attached event. Instead, you are referencing an event with a qualified name. According to MSDN information as pasted above, the above example of Buttons and StackPanel is actually a routed event example and not true attached event example. In case if above example is truly about usage of attached event (Button.Click="StackPanel_Click") then it's in contradiction to the information as provided at MSDN which says Another syntax usage that resembles typename.eventname attached event syntax but is not strictly speaking an attached event usage is when you attach handlers for routed events that are raised by child elements. You attach the handlers to a common parent, to take advantage of event routing, even though the common parent might not have the relevant routed event as a member. A similar question was raised in this Stack Overflow post, but unfortunately this question was closed before it could collect any response. Please help me to understand how attached events are different from routed events and also clarify the ambiguity as pointed above.

It would be better to finesse the specific target OSD notification to cancel, by using org.freedesktop.Notifications.CloseNotification(uint id). Is there an interface method that can put this on (in?) the DBus to fire when a particular notify event occurs? The method will need to get the notify PID to use as the argument for CloseNotification(uint id). Alternatively, qdbus org.freedesktop.Notifications \ /org/freedesktop/Notifications \ org.freedesktop.Notifications.CloseNotification(uint id) could be used from the shell, if the (uint id) argument could be determined. The actual command syntax would use an integer in place of (uint id). Perhaps a better question to ask first might be "How is the DBus address for a notification found?". In hindsight the previous question "How is the (uint id) for a notification found?" is rhetorical! • Correct way to use Farseer Physics in XNA

  I am using Farseer Physics for my 2D sidescroller game and I'm not sure how to proceed with it. I currently have a Sprite class (handles nothing but graphics), a GameObject class (contains specific object info like hit points), a World object which contains the list of Bodies, and a Level object which contains all of these objects. Originally I was trying to keep track of the Sprites, GameObjects, and Bodies separately because I felt that would provide loose coupling but it quickly became a headache. So my new idea was to add a Sprite member to the GameObject class but I'm still not sure how to maintain the Bodies because they have to communicate with GameObject. Specifically, my issue is this: The position of the Body is used to draw the Sprite inside of the Level. In order to do that I would have to maintain a link between GameObjects and Bodies. Is this correct or is there a better way to architect my game? If any of this is unclear please ask and I'll try to clarify. Thank you in advance for any help.

• Use of list-unsubscribe to improve inbox delivery

  To overcome email being classified as spam by Gmail, Google recommends a number of steps, which we have implemented (namely SPF, DKIM, and Precedence: bulk). One additional measure they recommend at https://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=81126#authentication reads as follows: Because Gmail can help users automatically unsubscribe from your email, we strongly recommend the following: Provide a 'List-Unsubscribe' header which points to an email address where the user can unsubscribe easily from future mailings (Note: This is not a substitute method for unsubscribing). Documentation for List-Unsubscribe is found at http://www.list-unsubscribe.com/. From this documentation I expect a button to be provided by a supported mail client. I have tested the 'List-Unsubscribe' header and it does not appear to provide the button. I have tested in both Gmail and OS X Mail. I tested with an http address and with both an email address and an http address. The format of the header is as follows: List-Unsubscribe: <mailto:[email protected]>, <http://domain.com/member/unsubscribe/[email protected]?id=12345N> No button appears in any test. My questions: How widely is List-Unsubscribe supported? Should a button be appearing somewhere, or does something else have to be present? I have seen a comment that even if the button is not present, services like Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail/Windows Live would give higher regard to email having the header. Thus it might be worthwhile for this aspect alone. Please note that our standard email footer already contacts instructions and a link to allow unsubscribing from our email. Finally, is it worth while to implement this header? (That is, any downsides?)

• In virtualbox, I can't access the dvd drive to install a guest host

  I have installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu Server 12.04 and VirtualBox 4.3. I have set up a VM called "MediaServer" and tried to start it. I then get the following error: Cannot open host device '/dev/sr0' for readonly access. Check the permissions of that device ('/bin/ls -l /dev/sr0'): Most probably you need to be member of the device group. Make sure that you logout/login after changing the group settings of the current user (VERR_ACCESS_DENIED) I have looked all over the Internet and have been unable to find a solution. Using Webmin, I tried changing the group settings so that my user name was in the "vboxusers" group, but that did not work either. I tried various other changes in group settings and none of them worked. Also, I tried rebooting the server after the changes and that didn't work either. I have been following a guide on how to set up an Ubuntu server from the website "linuxhomeserverguide.com" and when it came to the section where you could finally set up your first virtual machine, I am stumped. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me. Thanks in advance.

• OAuth2 vs Public API

  My understanding of OAuth (2.0) is that its a software stack and protocol to allow 2+ web apps to share information about a single end user. User A is a member of Site B and Site C; Site B wants to fetch some data from Site C about User A, and this is where OAuth steps in. So first off, if this assessment is incorrect, please begin by clarifying this for me and correcting me! Assuming I'm on the right track, then I guess I'm not seeing the need for OAuth to begin with (!). I'm sure I'm just not seeing the "forest through the trees" here, but the way I see it, couldn't Site C just expose a public API that Site B could use to fetch the same data (sans OAuth)? If Site C required user credentials to access the data, could this public API just use HTTPS for secure transport and require username/password as a part of each API call? Again, I'm sure I'm missing something, but I'm just not understanding why I would need OAuth when a secure, public API written and exposed by Site C seems more than capable of delivering what Site B needs regarding User A. In general, I'm looking for a set of guidelines to go by when deciding to choose between using OAuth for my web apps or just writing my own web service ( exposing public API). Thanks in advance!

  I am a student of computer engineering. I have never done any programming before, and as you can understand, I don't know how to study it or how to make my own programs. My English is weak [edited for clarity - ed], and so if you don't like the choices I list, please feel free to provide others. How should I study? How should I learn programming languages? Study completely from a book. Don't study from a book, just try writing code. A mix of the two; study from a book, then try writing code. Study half the book, then write the code by hand on paper. Listed to the teacher, then try to solve general problems (those not from any specific chapter). I have send that question to stackoverflow before when I am at first year. Now, I want to construct webpage to guide fresh students by giving advise of yours and mines.Maybe, you wonder Why I want to construct webpage , I just want help the other student. It is another thing to deal with situations you do not want or expect to occur in your processes and services. This session dives into fault handling in Oracle Service Bus 11g and Oracle SOA Suite 11g, based on an order-to-cash business process. Faults can be divided into business faults, technical faults, programming errors, and faulty user input. Each type of fault needs a different approach to prevent them from occurring or to deal with them. For example, apply User Experience (UX) techniques to improve the quality of your application so that faulty user input can be prevented as much as possible. This session shows and demos what patterns and techniques can be used in Oracle Service Bus and Oracle SOA Suite to prevent and handle technical faults as well as business faults. Q&A This section lists answers to the questions that were raised during the preview event. Q: Where can retries be configured in Oracle Service Bus? The retry mechanism is used to prevent faults caused by temporary glitches such as short network interruptions. A faulted message is resend (retried) and might succeed this time since the glitch has passed. • Is there any kind of established architecture for browser based MMO games?

  I am beginning the development of a broser based game in which players take certain actions at any point in time. Big parts of gameplay will be happening in real life and just have to be entered into the system. I believe a good kind of comparison might be a platform for managing fantasy football, although I have virtually no experience playing that, so please correct me if I am mistaken here. The point is that some events happen in the program (i.e. on the server, out of reach for the players) like pulling new results from some datasource, starting of a new round by a game master and such. Other events happen in real life (two players closing a deal on the transfer of some team member or whatnot - again: have never played fantasy football) and have to be entered into the system. The first part is pretty easy since the game masters will be "staff" and thus can be trusted to a certain degree to not mess with the system. But the second part bothers me quite a lot, especially since the actions may involve multiple steps and interactions with different players, like registering a deal with the system that then has to be approved by the other party or denied and passed on to a game master to decide. I would of course like to separate the game logic as far as possible from the presentation and basic form validation but am unsure how to do this in a clean fashion. Of course I could (and will) put some effort into making my own architectural decisions and prototype different ideas. But I am bound to make some stupid mistakes at some point, so I would like to avoid some of that by getting a little "book smart" beforehand. So the question is: Is there any kind of architectural works that I can read up on? Papers, blogs, maybe design documents or even source code? Writing this down this seems more like a business application with business rules, workflows and such... Any good entry points for that?
