• Why isn't a JS file hosted on Amazon S3 getting cached by the browser?

  I have a JS file hosted on Amazon S3 (http://s3.amazonaws.com/wingify/vis_opt.js). I want the file to be cached on users' browsers so that they don't have to download it with every page view. However, in spite of setting Cache Control header I don't think it is getting cached. Browser still contacts Amazon Server with every pageview. Here is the example of page where this script is embedded: http://myjugaad.in/ If you have Firebug, you will be able to see that browser requests it with every pageview. What can I do so that the file gets permanently cached? Thanks for help.

• Why is my background image not displaying properly in IE7?

  Screenshot of the issue: here Webpage in Question: http://cure.org Offending browser: Internet Explorer 7 You'll notice from the screenshot, or if you view this site in IE7, that the background image is not displaying for the content div (#modal-inner-content). Strangely, the image displays in the other divs where it is used (since it's a sprite, I'm using that same image for #modal-top-border and #modal-btm-border). In all other browsers it displays properly, and even in IE8. I cannot seem to find what CSS rule (or lack thereof) I may be using that IE7 is choking on. • Is it the filename or the whole URL used as a key in browser caches?

  It's common to want browsers to cache resources - JavaScript, CSS, images, etc. until there is a new version available, and then ensure that the browser fetches and caches the new version instead. One solution is to embed a version number in the resource's filename, but will placing the resources to be managed in this way in a directory with a revision number in it do the same thing? Is the whole URL to the file used as a key in the browser's cache, or is it just the filename itself and some meta-data? If my code changes from fetching '/r20/example.js' to '/r21/example.js', can I be sure that revision 20 of example.js was cached, but now revision 21 has been fetched instead and it is now cached?

  Here I am stuck with my htaccess code. I have been trying to figure it out for the last 11 hours why am I getting a redirect loop for the below code. And on the other hand if the user is from any other browsers then he should be redirected to a https version with www as prefix no matter if he types www in the url or not.

• Any alternative to jQuery change() to detect when user selects new file via dialog box in IE8?

  I am unable to detect when input type="file" changes its value after user selects file and the dialog box closes. $('.myInput').change(function(){ alert($(this).val()); }) Above jQuery code works perfectly in all browsers apart from IE. For some reason IE detects the change only after input field loses focus. Is there a way to detect the change immediately after dialog box closes? Or maybe to force input field to lose focus after dialog box closes so IE can detect it? I'm puzzled. Thanks for any help.

I haven't posted any source here, as you can freely see all that is there on the link. :-) Statement:I have a web page at http://agrimgupta.com/antaragni/ Disclaimer: Pardon me for the pathetic coding on that page. ;-) It was done on a very short interval. Improvements will be done at a later stage. Observation: This page is functioning normally on my localhost on all browsers. Problem: IE 8 is crawling (nearly hanging) while loading this page from the website. Although it is working fine on localhost. When on the website, It fails to render the mouseover effects, doing them in almost what seems like a minute. Question: How to resolve this stuck up of IE? It is necessary to resolve this. • Browser Detection, do's and don'ts. Is this ok?

  So, I understand that browser detection (ie. navigator.userAgent) shouldn't be used to decide which object method/property to use; yet, I want to set some simple CSS with JavaScript depending on the browser. However, it's not enough to justify a completely new StyleSheet. So is it OK if I use Browser Detection to decide what CSS to apply to an element? EDIT Ok, let's be SPECIFIC. I'm talking about a text-shadow inside a button (<input type="button"/>) The text inside the button isn't vertically centered in all browsers, so I tweak this with JS depending on the browser.

• Page layout breaks only in Opera which is weird?

  Okay so I'm working on an admin panel, in which everything should always be only within the view port until you hit the minimum widths and heights set. The current version of it can be seen here (its still in development) : http://qwibbledesigns.co.uk/preview/Admin/ In layout terms, it works flawlessly in all browsers, even down to ie6 =D. However, opera doesn't like it, and for some reason, always add's extra space to the bottom of the page, making it have an extra scrollbar, and I can't fathom it out which is highly annoying. Jquery is used to set the height of the container, sidebar, and content area so that they're always within the browser view port, and these functions rerun when the window is resized. I therefore cannot work out the the life of me what's wrong with opera. Would anyone mind taking a look and seeing if they can work it out? =D

• Would popup blockers stop a URL which pops up only when the user clicked on something?

  I'm currently building a web application that can can track a users actions on a particular website and pop a URL if the user takes certain actions, such as: first click, responding to a question by clicking yes / no, clicking a submit button, or exiting the site. It is important that these URLs are served to the user and are not blocked by pop-up blockers. It is my understanding that there are certain exceptions within the major internet browsers that allow pop-ups if they are served based on some user action, rather than serving an unsolicited pop? Is this true? How do I design this web application so that it can serve these pops (and not have them blocked).

• Alternative to css3 not selector

  Are there any alternatives to the :not css3 selector that are compliant with IE8 (and quirks mode). Either in css or javascript/jquery that emulates the selector or something similar. I am using *:not as follows below. Feel free to recommend a solution that avoids the use of :not completely. @media screen { #printable { visibility: hidden; } } @media print { *:not(#printable) { visibility: hidden; } #printable { position: absolute; visibility: visible; } } Note that the use of :not is tied to the use of @media print so just using a simple jQuery solution to apply css to $(":not(#printable)") won't work without being clever. • Stylesheets loading but styles not showing...

  Hi- I have a website I created in VS2010 and am trying to run with IIS7. My website starts in all major browsers but for some reason the styles are not applied even though I've confirmed using Firebug that the stylesheets have indeed loaded. Also, when I use the inspect tool to click on an element, I can see in the right-side box the specific styles that are supposed to be applied. I thought this might be a permissions issue but I think I've got those set properly. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Does jquery require timestamp on GET Calls in IE7?

So added the timestamp: new Date().getTime() part. That fixed the IE issue. I want o know why this happens in jQuery? Do I need to include a timestamp parameter to URL to avoid caching in all jQuery Ajax calls?

• Very simple mod_rewrite questions

  1- Does mod_rewrite means that if I make this url: domain.com/ad.php?id=8498292 INTO domain.com/8498292 that all links on my website will have to be changed to the later above? example the link: domain.com/ad.php?id=8498292 wont work now, unless I replace it with domain.com/8498292 ? Or will the server know that they are the same still? 2- Will the rewritten link appear rewritten in the browsers adress bars also, so if I enter domain.com/ad.php?id=8498292 it will actually appear as domain.com/8498292 in the adress bar itself? 3- Will images and all other related links and material on the page whose link is rewritten remain intact? ie will pictures and links still work FROM that page which are relative? I could successfully set the focus for first element by using $(":input:visible:first").focus(); or $(':input:enabled:visible:first').focus(); , according to jquery, set focus on the first enabled input or select or textarea on the page . I tried to use something like $('select:first').focus(); or $("select").first().focus(); or $(':visible:first').focus(); or $('enabled:visible:first').focus(); or other variations I could think of, but have not succeeded. Could anyone help me on this problem? I am a beginner for JQuery. I would like this function to work for all major browsers. Thank you very much!

• Problem with Firefox, javascript, and Canvas

  I'm having a Firefox-specific issue with a script I wrote to create 3d layouts. The correct behavior is that the script pulls the background-color from an element and then uses that color to draw on the canvas. When a user mouses over a link and the background-color changes to the :hover rule, the color being drawn changes on the canvas changes as well. When the user mouses out, the color should revert back to non-hover color. This works as expected in Webkit browsers and Opera, but Firefox chokes on it if mouseout is triggered and no mouseover event follows it. • Jquery .text() seems not to work on XML in IE7

  My PHP backend sends XML response to the client (ajax): <response> <code>0</code> <message>OK</message> </response> in the javascript I'm trying to get CODE value in this way: var errorCode = $('code', xml).text(); and then depending on errorCode value I do processing. It is working fine in all browsers I tested except IE7. Instead of CODE value - it is giving me the empty string. The problem is not in 0 value, because I tried to use 5 as a code for example - the result was the same. Any ideas, because I'm stuck with :(( Thanks.

  I am on the stage where I need to make my website cross-browser compatible. I need tips on how to get started. I have developed my website on firefox, so it works great with firefox. I guess I have to download a couple of versions of all major browsers now, right? Then just test each browser one by one? Should I do this before uploading the entire website onto a server or afterwards? All tips and SW which makes this easier is appreciated. • DOMNodeInserted or hashchange

  I am trying to write a JavaScript script that is "overlayed" on top of a Facebook page. It uses DOMContentLoaded to detect when content is loaded, then adds some extra stuff in. However, because Facebook doesn't actually "reload" the page when going to a new page (it just uses AJAX), the DOMContentLoaded handler doesn't run again, even though there is new stuff to look through. Anyway, to detect the change, I thought about using onhashchange since Facebook used to change the page's hash, but in Firefox 4 (I need to support Firefox 3 and later with this, but no other browsers), Facebook doesn't change the hash anymore and in pre-Firefox 3.6 there is no onhashchange. I thought about using DOMNodeInserted, but would that really slow down the page? (I really can't have any slowdowns in this script.)

• IE 8 Error - What's the cause?

  I have two magento eshops that worked perfectly in the past on all major browsers except IE 7. After I installed WINDOWS XP on my computer and accessed my eshops with IE 8, I almost had a heartattack seeing that they aren't working as they should. Before installing Windows XP I was running Windows 7 and the websites were looking good on IE 8. Now, the same IE version, but on different operating systems, gives me headaches! Now, can someone explain me how to 'debug' the ie 8 parsing engine for seeing the errors and try to modify the templates? Thanks.

This is is the best document I have found so far, but I believe it is is incomplete. The W3 specs are even worse, all it says is "This attribute may be used with most elements.". All browsers have their own quarks, if you know of a document for a specific browser like Firefox or IE that would also be helpful.

• nginx - how do I get rewrite directives to execute before index directives?

  I'm trying a simple internal rewrite with nginx to navigate to a sub-directory depending on the user_agent -- mobile browsers go to /mobile, otherwise they go to /www however it seems that when I rewrite these urls, the index directive is processed before the rewrites, so I end up getting 403 forbidden. # TEST FOR INDEX index index.php # TEST PHONES if ($http_user_agent ~* '(iPhone|iPod)') { rewrite ^(.*)$ /mobile$1 break; } # OTHERWISE WE ARE DONE rewrite ^(.*)$ /www$1 break; when I turn off the re-writes and hit the hostname (http://www.somehost.com/) the index is displayed correctly. When they are on, I have to explicitly navigate to somehost.com/index.php to get the script to run ... Do I have to explicity test for directories, and then re-write to an index.php file, or is there a simpler solution?

  I want to be able to add an attribute to a HTML element to be able to identify what its referring to. E.g if I have a list of names and a checkbox next to each name, like this: <div id="users"> Bob smith <input type=checkbox /> </div> And when a checkbox is clicked and the event handler function for it is called, I want to be able to identify which user was selected/unselected. Ideally I'm looking for something like this: <input type=checkbox data-userId = "xxx" /> Then when its clicked: function handleClick() { var userId = $(this).attr('data-userId'); } However I'm looking to do this in a way that won't break my HTML validation, and would still be valid HTML and work in all browsers. Any suggestions?
