  • Blackberry apps: Native or webapps?

    Dear all, I have read the Blackberry documentation and it is possible to push a notification from a webapp. I am planning to create a Blackberry application that compliments to our webapps. But I am still left in the middle whether to develop a webapp or native Blackberry app. I have also look at how a webapp runs on Blackberry browser and it looks smooth. From your experience does the native app offer something that the webapp doesn't? Bonus question, is Facebook and Twitter app on Blackberry a native app or a webapp? If it is a webapp, is it possible to make a launcher for the application on Blackberry? Thanks for your help.

  • Can you overlay transparent images in Blackberry Apps?

    I have a very simple application that has one screen and one button. The main screen has a verticalFieldManager with a BitmapField inside it, and one button beneath the bitmap. I want to be able to overlay another image on top of this when the user clicks a button. The overlay image is a PNG with transparent background, and this is important for design, so I can't use popupscreen or a new screen because the backgrounds are always white by default, and I've heard alpha doesn't really do the trick. I guess what I'm asking is if anyone knows a simple way to... A) take a standard verticalFieldManager and overlay a PNG on top of the inner contents B) overlay a PNG over the screen, no matter the contents The basic functionality of this app was intended to be - show an image. on click, show another overlaid on top. on click again, remove the popup image. I haven't found anything that addresses something like this online, but I have read of people doing similar things that utilize popupscreen and new screens in a way I don't need to do. Hopefully this makes sense. Thanks

  • Restfull authentication between two GAE apps.

    Hello everyone, i am trying to write a restful google app engine application (python) that accepts requests only from another GAE that i wrote. I dont like any of the ways that i thought of to get this done, please advice if you know of something better than: Get SSL setup, and simply add the credentials on the request that my consuming app will send. I dont like it cause SSL will slow things down. Security by obsecurity. Pass a long number by my consuming app that is in Xmod0, where X is a secret number that both applications know. I just,,,, dont like this. Check the HTTP header to see where is the request coming from. This option is the one that i hate the least, not alot of processing, and spoofing an HTTP request is not really worth it, for my application's data. Is there any other clean solution for this?

  • Kohana PHP - Multiple apps with shared model

    I'm using Kohana 3 to create a website that has two applications, an admin application and the actual site frontend. I have separated my folders to have the two applications separated, so the hierarchy looks as follows: /applications /admin /classes /controller /... /site /classes /controller /.... My question is, how I need to go about creating a shared /model folder. Essentially, both the admin and site itself operates on the same data, so the database layer and business logic remains more or less the same. So to me, it makes sense to have a single model folder, sitting outside of the two application folders. Is it possible to achieve the following hierarchy: /applications /model --> Where model sits in a neatly generic location, accessible to all applications /admin /classes /controller /... /site /classes /controller /....   • Websphere 6.1, Datasource, two apps

    Hi, I've got a webapp running on a Websphere 6.1 Server which JNDI lookups for a datasource. This webapp runs fine, the Websphere server recognizes the datasource ref in the web.xml etc.. Now we added a second webapp which should use this datasource with same configuration but I only getting a NULL Object when I invoke my JNDI lookup and a ClassCastException is thrown (which is correct). Maybe one of you has some suggestions?

  • Apps with lable XYZ could not be found

    Hello folks, today I ran into an error and have no clue how to fix it. Error: App with label XYZ could not be found. Are you sure your INSTALLED_APPS setting is correct? Where XYZ stands for the app-name that I am trying to reset. This error shows up every time I try to reset it (manage.py reset XYZ). Show all the sql code works. Even manage.py validate shows no error. I already commented out every single line of code in the models.py that I touched the last three monts. (function by function, model by model) And even if there are no models left I get this error. Here http://code.djangoproject.com/ticket/10706 I found a bugreport about this error. I also applied one the patches to allocate the error, it raises an exception so you have a trace back, but even there is no sign in what of my files the error occurred. I don't want to paste my code right now, because it is nearly 1000 lines of code in the file I edited the most. If someone of you had the same error please tell me were I can look for the problem. In that case I can post the important part of the source. Otherwise it would be too much at once. Thank you for helping!!!

  • Cucumber-rails on jruby installs gem into my apps root directory with bundler

    Just installed cucumber 0.7.2 and cucumber-rails 0.3.1 with jruby-1.4.0 on OSX. When I run a bundle install, it places a cucumber-rails directory in my main app with all of the gem code/dependencies. First off, this is definitely not what I want and I'm not sure why this happens for cucumber-rails only.   • Recommendations for a 3rd party Calendar picker class that's easy to use in iPhone/iPad apps

I'd like to add a Calendar picker control to my iPad app that is similar in appearence and functionality to the Calendar picker control in the upper right corner of the native Calendar app on the iPad. I've looked into a couple of the 3rd party frameworks that have Calendar controls like this (such as the Tapku Library), but because I'm new to iPhone OS development, I'm having a hard time figuring out how to use them, mostly because the ones I've looked at have little or no documentation. For those that have used 3rd party Calendar picker controls, can you recommend one that is... Easy to use or provide decent enough documentation to figure out how to use it Legit for use in iPhone OS 3.2+ (including 4.0) Or if you could recommend one and provide some code snippets from your projects that show how to...   • Android GPS cloud of confusion!

    I am trying to design my first Android application with the use of GPS. As of right now, I have a drawable button that when clicked, alerts a Toast message of the longitude and latitude. I have tried to use the telnet localhost 5554 and then geo fix #number #number to feed in values but no results display just 0 0. I have also tried DDMS way of sending GPS coordinates and I get the same thing. My question is what exactly is the code equivalent to the geo fix and the DDMS way of sending coordinates. I have used Location, LocationManger and LocationListener but I am not sure which is the right choice. Could anyone explain to me what the code-equivalent just so I can get a better understanding of how to fix my application not working.   • Mail in the cloud? (web service for email)

    I have multiple websites that need to send mail (after successful signup, etc.); I maintain a Postfix instance just for this (it never receives any incoming mail). This Postfix instance is a pain: it is sometimes broken, is regularly attacked, produces enormous amounts of logs, etc. These problems could certainly be dealt with by an experienced Postfix admin, but that's not me. Is there a service that would be just like Twilio, but for email? IE: a web service for sending mail.

  • Most Efficient Alternative Method of Storing Settings for iPhone Apps

    I am not using the Settings bundle to store the settings for my app, as I prefer to allow the user to access the settings within the app (they may be changed fairly often). I do realize that there is the option to do both, but for now, I am trying to find the most optimal place to store the settings within the app. I have a good number of settings (from what I have read, probably too many for NSUserDefaults), and the two main options I am considering are: 1) storing the settings in a dictionary in the plist, loading the settings into a NSDictionary property in the app delegate and accessing them via the sharedDelegate 2) storing the settings in a Core Data entity (1 row on Settings entity), loading the settings into a Settings object in the app delegate and accessing them via the sharedDelegate Of these two, which would be the optimal method, performance wise?

How do you actually ask for mobile device to give out it's location to the site? And in what format is that location given? I've got no clue and didn't find any answers from google, neither.

  • Custom Online Backup Solution Advice

    I have to implement a way so our customers can backup their SQL 2000/5/8 databasase online. The application they use is a C#/.NET35 Winforms application that connects to a SQL Server (can be 2000/2005/2008, sometimes express editions). The SQL Server is on the same LAN. Our application has a very specific UI and we must code each form following those guidelines. There’s lots of GDI+ to give it the look and feel we want. For that reason, using a 3rd party application is not a very good idea. We need to charge the customer on a monthly/annual basis for the service. Preferably, the customer doesn’t need to care about bandwidth and storage space. It must be transparent. Given the above reqs., my first thoughts are: Solution 1: Code some sort of FTP basic functionality with behind the scenes SQL Backup mechanism, then hire a Hosting service and compress-transfer the .BAK to the Hosting. Maintain a series of Folders (for each customer). They won’t see what’s happening. They will just see a list of their files and a big “Backup now” button that will perform the SQL backup, compress it and upload it (and update the file list) ;) Pros: Not very complicated to implement, simple to use, fairly simple to configure (could have a dedicated ftp user/pass) Cons: Finding a “ftp” only hosting plan is not probably going to be easy, they usually come with a bunch of stuff. FTP is not always the best protocol. more? Solution 2: Similar to 1, but instead of FTP, find a cloud computing service like Amazon S3, Mosso or similar. Pros: Cloud Storage is fast, reliable, etc. It’s kind of easy to implement (specially if there are APIs like AWS or Mosso). Cons: I have been unable to come up with a service optimized for resellers where I can give multiple sub-accounts (one for each customer). Billing is going to be a nightmare cuz these services bill per/GB and with One account it’s impossible to differentiate each customer. Solution 3: Similar to 2, but letting the user create their own account on Amazon S3 (for example). Pros: You forget about billing and such. Cons: A mess for the customer who has to open the Amazon (or whatever) account, will be charged for that and not from you. You can’t really charge the customer (since you’re just not doing anything). Solution 4: Use one of the many backup online solutions that use the tech in cloud storage. Pros: many of these include SQL Server backup, and a lot of features that we’d have to implement. Plus web access and stuff like that will come included. Cons: Still have the billing problem described in number 2. Little of these companies (if any) offers “reseller” accounts. You have to eventually use their software (some offer certain branding). Any better approach? Summary: You have a software (.NET Winapp). You want your users to be able to backup their SQL Server databases online (and be able to retrieve the backups if needed). You ideally would like to charge the customer for this service (i.e. XX € a year).

  • Can't seem to sign AWS Cloud Front URL properly

    Hi everybody, I found a lot of detailed examples online on how to sign an Amazon CloudFront URL for private content. Unfortunately, whenever I implement these examples my URL doesn't seem to work. The resource path is correct because I can download the file when it is set for world read, but the URL doesn't work when set just for authorized users. The PHP code I am using is below.
