• CPU Cores: The more the better?

  I currently have a dual-core processor at work and a quad-core at home. I've noticed both PCs are pretty equal as far as launching applications/surfing the web. The difference I can see is that my dual-core is 2.8GHz and my quad-core is 2.4GHz. Is it better to have a dual-core with a fast clock speed or a quad-core with a mediocre clock speed?

• Is it possible to have Grub2's boot.img in the MBR and have it load core.img from a separate boot partition?

  I have a multiboot system that I would like to use Grub to manage. The version of Grub shipping with my Linux distro is Grub2, and it installs its equivalent of stage 1.5-2, core.img, into the remaining sectors on the first track after the MBR but before the first partition. Unfortunately, those sectors are needed by another program. I have a separate primary /boot partition. If I could only keep boot.img as my MBR but have it look in the /boot partition for core.img rather than the embedded one in the sectors immediately following the MBR, everything would work fine. Is this possible with grub2?

  I am developing an application using J2ME to send the GPS coordinates received to the server and i am new to developing client server application. Everything works fine with the use of Nokia N97mini or E71. But when i tried it on HTC HD2, i get the exception from the server. I am using Netbeans 6.5.1 GlassFish V2 as Server. I have no idea why this error occurs only on the HTC HD2. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks... Implementing it is not difficult, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing a function in Core or Contrib. There is a zip namespace in Core, but it is described as providing access to the Zipper functional technique, which does not appear to be what I am after. Is there an equivalent function for combining 2 or more lists, in this way, in Core? If there is not, is it because there is an idiomatic approach that renders the function unneeded?

Some brief pro and cons: Since Eclipse is use, tracking and finding unused localizations are easier when they are saved as variables, compared to having them in a file.   On the Spring Security Core plugin GitHub repo, I see that Graeme on May 21st upped the required version of Grails from 2.0 to 2.3 before the RC4 version was released a couple of months later, but I don't see any explanation for why. Was it mismatched dependencies, bug reports, etc? I run a 2.2.4 app, and I would prefer not to upgrade at this point just to get the latest RC of spring security core. I understand if the upgrade to 3.2.0.RELEASE of spring security caused mismatched dependencies with older versions of Grails since I've run into the same issues before. This originally came up due to a pull request on the spring security OAuth2 provider plugin that I maintain. The pull request upped the required version to 2.3, and the requester pointed me to the RC4 release of core as the reason. Thanks for the good works as always!

  Hello. I was wondering if somebody knows how to use home/end keys behave in a Windows/ Linux fashion. What I mean is that when I press Apple + Left (Home combo on a mac book pro laptop) it should go to the beginning of the line, and Apple + Right to the end of the line. Right now they change focus to the top of the scroll history. Drives me crazy. Home / End keys behave as expected in TextMate and such but not in terminal, which makes me think it's that app specific. I found some page saying that I need to remap key bindings but I can't do that on every mac i touch. So is there another shorcut in Mac I can use or how do I make Home/End keys behave as expected? The concept of "Spaces" in a Mac is extremely important to how I utilize my development environments and I use this feature on Linux all the time. I use Compiz Manager for Ubuntu which allows me to "Desktop Switch" and navigate all desktops using the Ctrl+Alt+Arrow keys to a particular desktop. On a Mac, the process is similar, however, you're only given 3 non-customizable short-cuts: Option+Arrow, Ctrl+Arrow, and Alt+Arrow. How can I change the keyboard shortcut to take Ctrl+Option? The keys would then fit my working style and it won't feel awkward to remember two sets of keyboard shortcuts. Thanks! Mahmoud

  I have Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO graphics card in my Windows Server 2008 x64 machine. It has two outputs a VGA and a DVI. I have connected the DVI to my Dell 24" monitor with 1900x1200 resolution and it works 100%. The VGA I have connected to my second monitor a Samsung 22" with native resolution of 1680x1050. But the ATI driver and Catalyst control centre doesn't show this resolution as an option. If I choose a lower resolution like 1280x1024 it looks really bad and fuzzy. I searched in google and downloaded the powerstrip tool that allowed me to create a custom resolution of 1680x1050 and then this option shows up in Catalyst control centre and my 2nd monitor works fine now. But I don't want to pay for an application to choose a display resolution. Why doesn't ATI show me that option by default even though it has no problem in actually supporting the display at resolution. Is there a way to get 1680x1050 resolution using ATI drivers only ?

• Any Suggestions on How to Soup Up/ Mod a MacBook Pro 13"?

  So I've got a mid-2009 MacBook Pro 13". Integrated GPU so not a games machine but fast enough for doing .Net development in VMs. I love the little thing and wanted to give it a Christmas present so thought I'd mod it up a bit and give it a boost. I'm probably going to go for a 500GB Seagate Momentus XT hybrid drive rather than full-on SSD (I need 500GB space) but was wondering if there are any other mods/tweaks people could suggest? I saw something online about swapping a HDD for the DVD drive and wondered if anyone had tried this or similarly drastic mods to the smallest of the MBPs. Cheers.

  I just bought a nettop. It came with WinXP Home. I first installed Win 7 on it. I wasn't that happy with the performance so I decided to go back to XP. I am using an external dvd drive and a Win XP Pro disc. I boot from the dvd drive and during the install get this error: Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program. Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3. • How do I set up a working GUEST USER account in Win XP Pro?

  I have two user accounts within my WinXP Pro PC. One I'd like to erase. But I'd also like to setup a GUEST user account. I've already gotten 2-step instructions on how to get rid of the extraneous account: a) use an MS tool called delprof.msi b) manually delete the former users files in Documents & Settings. But I guess my original question was too complex -- kind of like a bill in Congress. So now I am just asking the final part of the question: How do I create a GUEST ACCOUNT -- then define what it will authorize/grant access to? i.e. internet browser(s), specific programs and files etc

• How to exchange the HDD of a MacBook Pro?

  I've bought an Solid State Drive (SSD) for my MacBook Pro, and now I need to exchange it somehow. Would this strategy work? 1) Create an backup with Time Machine (Snow Leopard) 2) Then replace the old HDD 3) Insert the new HDD 4) Install Snow Leopard (same version as previously used) 5) Open up Time Machine, and recover from the last backup I'm not sure about how to do the last part. Is that hard? What are the neccessary steps? Or is there a better way? Maybe I don't need to re-install Snow Leopard completely? Maybe the Install CD already offers an option to recover from Backup?
