• Undocumented overload of string.Split() ?

  According to both Intellisense and MSDN doc on string.Split, there are no parameterless overloads of string.Split. Yet if I type in string[] foo = bar.Split(); It compiles. And it works. I have verified this in both Visual Studio 2008 and 2010. In both cases intellisense does not show the parameterless overload. Is there a reason for this? Are there any other missing overloads from the MSDN/Intellisense docs? Usually browsing through overloads in intellisense is how I best determine which overload to use. I'd hate to think I am missing other available options throughout the .Net framework.

• How to kill a quoted string at point in emacs?

  I would like to kill a quoted string in a source file without having to mark the beginning of the string and kill-region, but just by placing the point anywhere inside the quoted string and pressing a shortcut. I tried to write a function in elisp for this, but I figured out that the file would need to be parsed from the beginning up to point to determine whether the point is inside quoted string, and to find the bounds of the quoted string(also handle the \")... But the file is already parsed by font-lock. So now I can find out if I'm inside quoted string: (defun inside-quoted-string? () (interactive) (print (find 'font-lock-doc-face (text-properties-at (point))))) But how do I get the bounds of the string? font-lock knows it, since it nicely highlights it in blue, but how do I get it?

• NSTableView doesn't populate with array objects until a new object is added via the controller

However, if I bind a button to the array controller's add: input and click it during runtime (this adds a new object to the array and table) then the table will show the new object first, with the objects added during applicationDidFinishLaunching following it. Why does this happen? And is there a way to make my table populate without having to add an element first?

• Generic Database table design

  Just trying to figure out the best way to design my table for the following scenario: I have several areas in my system (documents, projects, groups and clients) and each of these can have comments logged against them. My question is should I have one table like this: CommentID DocumentID ProjectID GroupID ClientID etc Where only one of the ids will have data and the rest will be NULL or should I have a seperate CommentType table and have my comments table like this: CommentID CommentTypeID ResourceID (this being the id of the project/doc/client) etc My thoughts are that option 2 would be more efficient from an indexing point of view?

• Need new method for linking to native mapping from mobile web app

  My mobile web apps use a map button which automatically starts the mapping features of Android and iPhone by simply linking to http://maps.google.com/maps?q=New+York. iOs 6 comes out, the links stop working, because Apple wants us to use "maps.APPLE.com". Turns out ANYTHING you send to "maps.apple.com" gets forwarded to "maps.google.com". So now I have to specially detect iOs 6 and swap out links just so Apple can forward everything back to Google anyway. Is there a clean way to open the device/native mapping app from a mobile web app that works on Android, iOs 6, and iOs pre-6, since iOs 6 nerfed it?   I'm trying to draw text on NSView subclass. I'm using an NSTextStorage, an NSLayoutManager, and an NSTextContainer. I followed Apple's doc and here's the method I use to calculate the necessary height for each text: NSSize newSize= NSMakeSize(width, 0.0); NSLayoutManager* layoutManager= [[textStorage layoutManagers] objectAtIndex:0]; NSTextContainer* textContainer= [[layoutManager textContainers] objectAtIndex:0]; [textContainer setContainerSize:newSize]; [textStorage addAttribute:NSFontAttributeName value:font range:NSMakeRange(0, [textStorage length])]; [textContainer setLineFragmentPadding:0.0]; [layoutManager glyphRangeForTextContainer:textContainer]; return [layoutManager usedRectForTextContainer:textContainer].size.height; The only problem is that I don't know how to draw in an NSRect with the layout manager. • Pass structured data from C++ app to ASP.NET web service.

  I have Visual C++ application that needs to communicate with a ASP.NET web service. Specifically, the app needs to pass structured data (e.g. objects that contain lists of structures, etc) as a parameter to one of the service methods. The C++ application is already generating an xml document that contains this data. The document is generating using an xml library, so it should always well-formed. What is a good method for passing this data to the web service? I'm thinking about passing the document to the web service as a string parameter, then deserializing to a .NET object based on an xsd. But, I hear that passing an xml doc as a string parameter is not recommended. So, my questions: What are the pitfalls associated with sending the document as a string parameter, assuming that the document itself is always well-formed? Assuming the above is a bad idea, what are some good alternate approaches?

• What would be my best MySQL Synchronization method?

  We're moving a social media service to be on separate data centers with global load balancing, as our other hosting provider's entire data center went down. Twice. This means that both websites need to be synchronized in some sense -- I'm less worried about the code of the pages, that's easy enough to sync, but they need to have the same database data. From my research on SO, it seems MySQL Replication is a good option, but the MySQL manual, for scaling out, says that its best when there are far more reads then there are writes/updates: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/replication-solutions-scaleout.html In our case, it's about equal. We're getting around 200-300 thousand requests a day right now, and we can grow rapidly. Every request is both a read and write request. What would be the best method or tool to handle this?

• How do I bind a click to an anchor without a framework (javascript)

  I know this is easily done in jQuery or any other framework, but that's not really the point. How do I go about 'properly' binding a click event in pure javascript? I know how to do it inline (I know this is terrible) <a href="doc.html" onclick="myFunc(); return false">click here</a> and this causes my javascript to execute for a JS enabled browser, and the link to behave normally for those without javascript? Now, how do I do the same thing in a non-inline manner?

• Xcode OpenGL Build Error (header file not found)

  When building my Objective-C project (for Mac OS 10.9, Xcode 5.11), I get the error message Lexical or Preprocessor Issue 'OpenGL/OpenGL.h' file not found. The error is caused by the include section of the file CVDisplayLink.h where the above named file is included. CVDisplayLink.h belongs to the framework CoreVideo. Now there are two strange points related to that issue: The error appeared after I tried to test some basic OpenGL features using the tutorial in the Mac Developer Library ( https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/GraphicsImaging/Conceptual/OpenGL-MacProgGuide/opengl_drawing/opengl_drawing.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40001987-CH404-SW8 ). I added an NSOpenGLView to my MainMenu as well as the related code given in the tutorial. Then the error message appeared. I also tried to add the OpenGL and CoreVideo frameworks to my project target, but this did not help. After some frustration, I removed the NSOpenGLView from my project, as well as all related code. Now the error Message still appeares and I have no Idea how to ged rid of it.

• Using CMake with Eclipse CDT, quickly switch targets?

  I'm using the CDT4 - MinGW Makefiles generator. Project-Build All successfully builds the target (a shared library) but it seems I would have to (A) open a project settings page and type in the target, hoping it's spelled right*, or (B) run make from a terminal to "build" the install and package targets. I noticed a promising Project-Make Target entry, but the Create... and Build... sub-entries are greyed-out.   I am trying to write some google map functionlity and playing around with javascript closures with an aim to try organise and structure my code better. • Problem with CFNetRegister

  I'm trying to work with CFNetServices by trying to start up and publish a service asynchronously. I'm trying to use the example code from here: http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/Networking/Conceptual/NSNetServiceProgGuide/Articles/CFNetServices.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/30001276-SW3, but CFNetRegisterWithOptions always fails. (CFNetRegister is deprecated now). When I print out the error struct, it looks like this: (gdb) p error $1 = { domain = 10, error = -72004 } Which doesn't seem correct to me. Does anyone know what might be wrong? Thanks!

• Do I need the text "_size" in the my.cnf file for mysql 5.1?

  This is a pretty simple question about setting parameters in the my.cnf file for mysql 5.1. This page gives me the parameters I can tune: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/server-parameters.html and so I think I would need to write key_buffer_size = 256M But when I open my current my.cnf, it has the line: key_buffer = 16M My question is, do I need "key_buffer_size" or "key_buffer" or does it not matter which I use? And, how would I know if something in the my.cnf is incorrect? Where's the daemon start log file? I am running ubuntu; I think version 8.04 LTS

• CouchDB emit with lookup key that is array, such that order of array elements are ignored.

  When indexing a couchdb view, you can emit an array as the key such as: emit(["one", "two", "three"], doc); I appreciate the fact that when searching the view, the order is important, but sometimes I would like the view to ignore it. I have thought of a couple of options. 1. By convention, just emit the contents in alphabetical order, and ensure that looking up uses the same convention. 2. Somehow hash in a manner that disregards the order, and emit/search based on that hash. (This is fairly easy, if you simply hash each one individually, "sum" the hashes, then mod.) Note: I'm sure this may be covered somewhere in the authoritative guide, but I was unsuccessful in finding it.

• Boost.Log - Multiple processes to one log file?

  Reading through the doc for Boost.Log, it explains how to "fan out" into multiple files/sinks pretty well from one application, and how to get multiple threads working together to log to one place, but is there any documentation on how to get multiple processes logging to a single log file? What I imagine is that every process would log to its own "private" log file, but in addition, any messages above a certain severity would also go to a "common" log file. Is this possible with Boost.Log? Is there some configuration of the sinks that makes this easy? I understand that I will likely have the same "timestamp out of order" problem described in the FAQ here, but that's OK, as long as the timestamps are correct I can work with that. This is all on one machine, so no remote filesystem problems either.

  I need an easy way to show different document-types (.doc, .xls, .jpg...) in webpages. Ideally a user prints or saves that document and that document is automatically converted to Adobe-Flash. I know there are existing solutions to this. However, I would like to implement them in my own application, written in C#.   i have a mini blog app, and a 'timeline' . there i want to be displayed all the posts from all the friends of a user, plus the posts of that user himself. For that, i have to make some kind of a 'join' between the results of two queries (queries on the same table) , so that the final result will be the combination of the user - posesor of the account, and all his friends. My query looks like this: blog = New.objects.filter(created_by = following,created_by = request.user) By that ',' i wanted to make a 'join' -i found something like this on a doc- but this method is not correct- i'm getting an error. How else could be done this 'join' ? Thanks!
