• Canon MP280 All in One prints but scanner not recognized

  I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS after not using any Linux distro for several years. My Canon MP280 worked perfectly as far as printing goes and I was even able to set it up on a Samba share and print from a Windows 7 machine. However when I open Simple Scan it does not detect a scanner. I did find some instructions online but the scanner is still not recognized in Simple Scan even after installing a couple .deb packages from the Canon site. I also couldn't seem to find the ScanGear package after installing those .deb packages as well but I haven't had a chance to delve fully into it. Thanks for your time!

• Outlook 2010 reminders keep popping up even if closed

  Today when I got to work and started my computers I got a event reminder for my last events last friday. I closed the reminder, but perhaps 10 minutes later it pops up again, and another 10 minutes later it popped up yet again. As the day is passing all my reminders for this day is added to the list of reminders that keep popping up 10 minutes after that they are closed. I've tried both the repair function in Windows Control Panel -- E-mail and the scanpst.exe program, but none of them solved the problem. I've tried outlook.exe /cleansniff and outlook.exe /cleanreminders, but that didn't help either. Reading on the net there seem to be some reports with this for reoccuring calendar events, but my affected events are one-timers. How can I get the closed reminders to stay closed? Update: I noticed that I have 282 drafts of the meetings that I keep getting reminders of.

• Late feedback

  MySQL Community team asked me to write about Devconf 2013 few months ago. Conference was in June, 2013, but I remembered about this my promise only now: month later after my participating in MySQL Connect and Expert Troubleshooting seminar (change country to United Kingdom if you see blank page). I think it is too late for the feedback, but I still have few thoughts which I want to record.DevConf (former PHPConf) always was a place where I tried new topics. At first, because I know audience there very well and they will be bored if I repeat a story which I was telling last year, but also because it is much easier to get feedback in your own native language. But last years my habit seems started to change and I presented improved version of my 2012 MySQL Connect talk about MySQL backups. Of course, I also had a seminar with unique topic, made for this conference first time: Troubleshooting MySQL Performance with EXPLAIN and Using Performance Schema to Troubleshoot MySQL. And these topics, improved, were presented at the expert seminar. It is interesting how my habit changes and one public speaking activity interferes next one.What is good about DevConf is it forces you to create new ideas and do it really well, because audience is not forgiving at all, so they catch everything you miss or prepared not good enough. This can be bad if you want to make a marketing-style topic for free, but allows to present technical features in really good details: all these sudden discussions really help.In year 2013 Oracle had a booth at the conference and was presented by a bunch of people. Dmitry Lenev presented topic "New features of replication in MySQL 5.6" and Victoria Reznichenko worked on the booth. What was new at the conference this year is greater interest in NoSQL, scale and fast development solutions. This, unfortunately, means not so huge interest in MySQL as it was earlier. However, at the same time, "Common" track was really MySQL track: not only Oracle, but people from other companies presented about it.

• windows 2008 R2 TS printer security - can't take owership

  I have a Windows 2008 R2 server with Terminal server role installed. I'm seeing a problem with an ordinary user who is member of local printer operators group on the server. If the user opens a cmd window using ‘run as administrator’ they can run printmanager.msc without needing to enter their password again. In printmanager they can change the ownership of redirected (easy print) printers without problems. If, from the same cmd window, they use subinacl to try and change the onwership of the queue to themselves they get access denied: >subinacl.exe /printer "_#MyPrinter (2 redirected)" /setowner="MyDom\MyUsr" Elapsed Time: 00 00:00:00 Done: 1, Modified 0, Failed 1, Syntax errors 0 Last Done : _#MyPrinter (2 redirected) Last Failed: _#MyPrinter (2 redirected) - OpenPrinter Error : 5 Access denied so, same context, same action but one works and one doesn't. Any ideas for this odd behaviour? I'm using subinacl x86 on an x64 server as I can't find anything more up to date. I've tried with icacls and others but couldn't get them to do anything with printers.

• Do you think that in the future it'll be possible to develop games on OS X by using Python and the latest library "Sprite kit" made by Apple? [on hold]

  I don't understand a lot about game engines and modules for Python, even though I'm aware of the existance of PyGame and Pyglets, so please don't bash me too hard if I'll wrote something wrong in this question :-) When I upgraded my Mac to the latest version of OS X, I noticed for the first time that Apple is providing a library named Sprite kit for developing games on both iOS and OS X. It looks to me fairly complete, and the fact is managed by a big company gives me the impression of being well-supported for the time being; in summary, it looks... cool. Actually in order to take advantage of "Sprite kit" you need to code in Obj-C. Since I don't know Obj-C but only a little bit of Python, do you think that there's a chance that sooner or later someone will make a wrapper for Python ? Thank you very much and best regards

  Sometimes videos appear in google's web search results (and not only in Google Videos). For a video to appear in the web search results, does it have to appear in Google Videos firs? Does each and every video that appears in Google Videos has a chance to appear in google's web search results (given that the video is very relevant to the query, more relevant than all the other videos)? Please note: I'm not asking about video sitemaps or mRSS. I'm just asking when do videos appear in google's web search results compared to when do videos appear in Google Videos.

• Strange RDP / Remote Desktop problem

  I'll try to be as specific as I can be: Server is running SBS 2008 R2 (with all updates) Server is connected to the internet Server has 2 NIC's, one is disabled Server is running RDP Service (accessible directly from the internet, I know, not as secure as it should be) Computers A and B are on the same local net. Computers A and B are both Windows 7. Users X and Y are both admins on the server Computer A can connect as user X to the server with mstsc Computer A can connect as user Y to the server with mstsc Computer B can connect as user X to the server with mstsc computer B CANNOT connect as user Y to the server with mstsc! The last point is the problem, I get an authentication error. This used to work flawlessly for the last year. The server and desktops have been rebooted. I find it very strange....

• Laptop overheats while using Internet

  YES I have figured out that my laptop overheats while using the internet via an Ethernet port through a broadband connection.Strange isn't it ? Well I need to know WHY ? . I have installed ATI Graphics : Vesa Madison as they appear to be working very fine. Temperature of my i7-hp pavilion dv6 rises from 67degrees to a superhot 85+ and also to 106degrees where my laptop shuts down. When running torrents or Chromium I hardly open 4 Tabs so there is no chance for CPU over-loading due to multiple processes.NEED HELP.And Thank You for your time.

• After installing updates, Windows 7 reboots when it gets to "Preparing to Configure"

  After letting Windows 7 Pro install updates at shutdown I now cannot get it to boot back up. I have tried selecting safemode, and "last known working configuration" and I get the same results. It gets to the screen and says "Preparing to configure Windows" and then reboots. If it is giving me a BSOD it is happening so fast I can not see it. This is a generic PC that has been running fine for the last year. It had 22 updates to do at shutdown. Windows 7 Pro Service Pack 1 64 bit in an Active Directory Domain.

  I joined Sun Microsystems in December of 1996, not quite 17 years ago. Over the course of those years, it has been my great pleasure and honor to work with a many talented folks, on a many incredible projects - first at Sun, and then at Oracle. In those nearly 17 years, we made quite a few platforms and products accessible - including Java, GNOME, Solaris, and Linux. We pioneered many of the accessibility techniques that are now used throughout the industry, including accessibility API techniques which first appeared in the Java and GNOME accessibility APIs; and screen access techniques like the API-based switch access of the GNOME Onscreen Keyboard. Our work was recognized as groundbreaking by many in the industry, both through awards for the innovations we had delivered (such as those we received from the American Foundation for the Blind), and awards of money to develop new innovations (the two European Commission accessibility grants we received). Our knowledge and expertise contributed to the first Section 508 accessibility standard, and provided significantly to the upcoming refresh of that standard, to the European Mandate 376 accessibility standard, and to a number of web accessibility standards. After 17 years of helping Sun and Oracle accomplish great things, it is time to start a new chapter... Today is my last day at Oracle. It is not, however, my last day in the field of accessibility. Next week I will begin working with another group of great people, and I am very much looking forward to the great things I will help contribute to in the future. • I'm working on my resume for a job fair this week; any tips? [closed]

  This will change as I update the document, but here is my resume. The job fair I'm going to is really huge (very good chance that it will determine where I intern this summer), so I would definitely appreciate any possible assistance in polishing this up. Any advice possible will be appreciated, ranging from spacing or absurdly minor formatting issues, to rearranging bullet points, to browser incompatibilities, to major changes in anything I've organised or written. At the moment, my only specific question is whether easter eggs are acceptable (specifically, if representatives who understand the reference will generally frown upon my inclusion of "Hacked The Gibson", given the context). Also, if anyone wants to evaluate it (e.g. font size, final arrangement, etc.), here is a PDF snapshot of the document at the time this question was submitted (the final version will have a different file name and appropriate metadata, for the record). • Deferring questions about salary expectations until the second interview [closed]

  I usually find that interviewers ask about expected salary on a first interview, but I usually feel uncomfortable discussing such details at an early stage. I feel that low-balling a figure might result in under-selling myself, whereas going too high might lose me the chance of a second interview. I also like time to reflect on my interview experience before vocalising my expectations. I recently realised that in one interview I prefixed my salary figure with a justification, which made me come across as a little desperate and unsure of myself. Is there a good way to defer such questions until a second interview (assuming I get one, of course) without hurting my chances or weakening my position?

• Proccess of carrying out a BER Test

  I am subscribed to an ISP supplying a 3meg ADSL line. Lately (for the last 4 weeks) speeds have dropped from the usual average downstream speed of ~250kbps to just 0.14Mbps (according to speedtest.net) and employees are complaining about lack of access to the server. I have been calling customer support and logging calls for the last 3 weeks, but they have been unable to determine the source of the problem other carrying out a few bitstream tests and checking the DHCP renewal times. I am going to call back and suggest carrying out a BER test. What type of equipment is needed to carry out this test? I have access to a wide range of Cisco networking equipment. Other: We dont need a leased line as there are less than ten employees.

• How to convince a non-technical client that their application spec needs to be simplified?

  Often times I am faced with the situation where a new client comes to me with an application that has literally 100s of unnecessary features and it is quite clear that things need to be drastically simplified for the project to have any chance of succeeding. How do you convince the client to take a more MVP approach and simplify? edit: So the current top answer is to provide the client with a time/cost estimate for the huge application. I'm not too fond of this answer because it doesn't address the real problem with this situation. And that is - it's a bad practice to spec out a massive application and then try and build it from the get go. I feel much more comfortable initially building a small, simple MVP foundation. And then adding small features to that foundation one by one. So how do I convince the client to approach building software in this way?

  This being my first time going to TechEd and I want to make sure that I get the most out of it.  The first goal is to make sure that I get to the sessions that cover as many topics as possible.  This is important for me as a Solution Architect consultant specializing in Microsoft technologies.  To this end I have spent some time going through the sessions on the myTechEd site. The other reason for the trip is to connect with the Microsoft development community.  This includes both members of my local Midwest community and the global communities that I have only had online connections with.  Sharing the experience and getting a chance to exchange ideas with new and old friends is a great part of any convention. • I keep getting blue screen - Windows 7 x64 (maybe ram?)

  I have +- 5yrs old pc runnig windows 7 and I've been getting blue screen recently. I had win 8 and I got a lof of erros with ram memory, so I reinstalled back to Win 7. (I have 2x 2 GB RAM) To make a better image of my errors - I get them while writing email, installing nvidia driver, sound driver, running RAM test. I got a log of my last error, could anyone tell me what is it? Should I get new RAM memories? • Is Carnegie Mellon (CMU) a Javaschool? Are any prominent universities in the US javaschools? [on hold]

  I'm guessing CMU would teach C and other unmanaged languages (their course listing shows Principles of Functional Programming as a required course for a BSCS), but it's hard to tell from course listings. I'm looking into applying there, where I have an OK chance of getting in , as well as some other mid-to high tier CS schools. I'm wondering how you can tell if a school mainly teaches Java or goes into C/C++. Everyone says (and I agree, from my current programming knowledge) that learning Java in college exclusively is a bad idea, so I'm hoping to avoid ending up at a 'Javaschool.'

• How to create Button/Switch-Like Tile where you can step on it and change its value?

  If the player step on Button-Tile when its true, it become false. If the player step on Button-Tile when its false, it become true. The problem is, when the player stand on (intersect) the Button-Tile, it will keep updating the condition. So, from true, it become false. Because its false and player intersect on it, it become true again. True-false-true-false and so on. I use ElapsedGameTime to make the updating process slower, and player can have a chance to change the Button to true or false. However, its not a solution I was looking for. Is there any other way to make it keep in False/True condition while the Player standing on it (The Button tile) ?
