• What are some cool git or .gitignore tricks & best practices? [closed]

- by 01walid
Git is just awesome and fast VCS, however, knowing better this tool will help you incredibly increase your productivity and save your time. Here we can try to make a collection of tips, tricks and useful links to better take advantage of git, this question can have some more sub-questions, I mean: what are some usefull commands that reverse or rectify commits/adding/removing mistakes? what are .gitignore & Global .gitignore best practices? especially with private/secure files that contains passwords, api keys, local config and so on ... .gitignore first or git add <files> first? what are the advantages/disadvantages of both being the first/last. links to blog post, articles, would be sufficient. I thought every sub-question is not worthy opening a whole post each alone, I think centralizing these tips in one question post would help many people.

• A Year of Tuesdays: T-SQL Tuesday Meta-Roundup

- by Adam Machanic
Just over a year ago I kicked off T-SQL Tuesday , "a recurring, revolving blog party." The idea was simple: Each month a blog will host the party, and about a week before the second Tuesday of the month a theme will be posted. Any blogger that wishes to participate is invited to write a post on the chosen topic. The event is called "T-SQL Tuesday", but any post that is related to both SQL Server and the theme is fair game . So feel free to post about SSIS, SSRS, Java integration, or whatever other...(read more)

• T-SQL Tuesday #34: Help! I Need Somebody!

- by Most Valuable Yak (Rob Volk)
Welcome everyone to T-SQL Tuesday Episode 34! When last we tuned in, Mike Fal (b|t) hosted Trick Shots. These highlighted techniques or tricks that you figured out on your own which helped you understand SQL Server better. This month, I'm asking you to look back this past week, year, century, or hour...to a time when you COULDN'T figure it out. When you were stuck on a SQL Server problem and you had to seek help. In the beginning... SQL Server has changed a lot since I started with it. <Cranky Old Guy> Back in my day, Books Online was neither. There were no blogs. Google was the third-place search site. There were perhaps two or three community forums where you could ask questions. (Besides the Microsoft newsgroups...which you had to access with Usenet. And endure the wrath of...Celko.) Your "training" was reading a book, made from real dead trees, that you bought from your choice of brick-and-mortar bookstore. And except for your local user groups, there were no conferences, seminars, SQL Saturdays, or any online video hookups where you could interact with a person. You'd have to call Microsoft Support...on the phone...a LANDLINE phone. And none of this "SQL Family" business!</Cranky Old Guy> Even now, with all these excellent resources available, it's still daunting for a beginner to seek help for SQL Server. The product is roughly 1247.4523 times larger than it was 15 years ago, and it's simply impossible to know everything about it.* So whether you are a beginner, or a seasoned pro of over a decade's experience, what do you do when you need help on SQL Server? That's so meta... In the spirit of offering help, here are some suggestions for your topic: Tell us about a person or SQL Server community who have been helpful to you. It can be about a technical problem, or not, e.g. someone who volunteered for your local SQL Saturday. Sing their praises! Let the world know who they are! Do you have any tricks for using Books Online? Do you use the locally installed product, or are you completely online with BOL/MSDN/Technet, and why? If you've been using SQL Server for over 10 years, how has your help-seeking changed? Are you using Twitter, StackOverflow, MSDN Forums, or another resource that didn't exist when you started? What made you switch? Do you spend more time helping others than seeking help? What motivates you to help, and how do you contribute? Structure your post along the lyrics to The Beatles song Help! Audio or video renditions are particularly welcome! Lyrics must include reference to SQL Server terminology or community, and performances must be in your voice or include you playing an instrument. These are just suggestions, you are free to write whatever you like. Bonus points if you can incorporate ALL of these into a single post. (Or you can do multiple posts, we're flexible like that.) Help us help others by showing how others helped you! Legalese, Your Rights, Yada yada... If you would like to participate in T-SQL Tuesday please be sure to follow the rules below: Your blog post must be published between Tuesday, September 11, 2012 00:00:00 GMT and Wednesday, September 12, 2012 00:00:00 GMT. Include the T-SQL Tuesday logo (above) and hyperlink it back to this post. If you don’t see your post in trackbacks, add the link to the comments below. If you are on Twitter please tweet your blog using the #TSQL2sDay hashtag. I can be contacted there as @sql_r, in case you have questions or problems with comments/trackback. I'll have a follow-up post listing all the contributions as soon as I can. Thank you all for participating, and special thanks to Adam Machanic (b|t) for all his help and for continuing this series!

• Fixed Bid vs. T&M – Take 2

- by AjarnMark
One of my most popular blog entries of all time is my Contracting Tips: Fixed Bid vs. T&M post from January, 2004. This post consistently shows up in my referrers list, usually coming from a search engine. Recently, Brent Ozar (@BrentO) wrote a great argument for why he always bills by the hour (a.k.a. Time & Materials or T&M) which itself was a response to Mark Richman’s (@mrichman) post on why he never bills by the hour (fixed bid). Each article has good arguments, and I encourage you to read them both and choose the best approach for you. As for me, my experience parallels Brent’s and I historically have leaned toward the Time & Materials model.

• What would you change about C# if you could?

- by Casebash
Assume that your objectives are the same as for C#. I don't want an answer like "I'd write Python instead". I'm only interested in changes in the language itself - not in the standard library. Perhaps this would be interesting to discuss, but as it is shared between many languages it would be better to discuss this in another question instead. Please post a single idea per answer; if you want to post several ideas, post several separate answers. Thanks!

• Where can I find game postmortems with a programmer perspective [on hold]

- by Ken
There are a number of interesting game post-mortems in places like GDC vault or gamastura.com. The post-mortems are generally give with a CEO/manager perspective or a designer perspective, or, more often a combination of both e.g DOOM postmortem But I have not been able to find many post-mortems which are primarily from the programmers perspective. I'm looking for discussions and rational for technical choices and tradeoffs and how technical problems were overcome. The motivation here is to learn what kind of problems real game programmers encounter and how they go about solving them. A perfect example of what I'm looking for is Renaud Bédard's excellent GDC talk on the development of Fez, "Cubes all the way down". Where can I find more like that?

• Switching to WIF SessionMode in ASP.NET

- by Your DisplayName here!
To make it short: to switch to SessionMode (cache to server) in ASP.NET, you need to handle an event and set a property. Sounds easy – but you need to set it in the right place. The most popular blog post about this topic is from Vittorio. He advises to set IsSessionMode in WSFederationAuthenticationModule_SessionSecurityTokenCreated. Now there were some open questions on forum, like this one. So I decided to try it myself – and indeed it didn’t work for me as well. So I digged a little deeper, and after some trial and error I found the right place (in global.asax): void WSFederationAuthenticationModule_SecurityTokenValidated( object sender, SecurityTokenValidatedEventArgs e) { FederatedAuthentication.SessionAuthenticationModule.IsSessionMode = true; } Not sure if anything has changed since Vittorio’s post – but this worked for me. While playing around, I also wrote a little diagnostics tool that allows you to look into the session cookie (for educational purposes). Will post that soon. HTH

• Can 302 redirect on wordpress homepage affect SEO?

- by user2402116
I manage a website. In order to lead the visitor to the latest post when entering the website, I set a 302 redirect from the homepage URL to the latest post URL. There's 1 to 2 posts a month so the redirection is made manually each time a new post gets published. Despite the website registration on google it doesn't get indexed at all. After searching for some solution on blogs and forums I understood this issue might be related to the 302 redirection. It's the first time I use redirections on a website, can someone help me?

• How to adjust DPI in 14.04

- by jake
I asked about fixing DPI in 12.04. The 14.04 release notes list "Support for High-DPI screens and desktop scaling." Post upgrade, it seems that nothing has changed. Similar symptoms from my previous post persist: The 1" square here is closer to 1/2" Despite the line xserver-command=X -dpi 170 in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf, xdpyinfo reports 96x96 dpi I did find that I was able to use the "Scale for menu and title bars" slider in System SettingsDisplays to fix title bar text size instead of setting org.gnome.desktop.interface text-scaling-factor as described here. The last post also mentions that in Gnome 3, DPI is hard coded to 96. Is this a limitation in 14.04? (I am somewhat ignorant to the distinction between Gnome and Unity) Can I do anything to properly set my DPI?

• guest blogging, recipricle links & nofollow

- by sam
When writing a guest blog for a site and in the blog post i write i link back to my self, that counts as an imbound link. Writing something on my blog, like "have a look at this post i wrote for _" made that a link the links would be recipricle, correct ? thus cancling each other out.. If i was to to make the link back to my article a nofollow link then would i still get the link juice ? If i write guest blog post and the site want to also write a guest blog on my site later on whats the best way to handle it as wont these both cancel each other out and have no effect ?

• Questions Anyone?

- by Kevin Smith
I've been working with WebCenter Content for almost 9 years now and have a ton of topics rolling around my head that I'm sure would make excellent blog post once I find the time to write them up. Does anyone have any questions they would like answered? Like why does WCC do ...? How does this feature work? I can't seem to get this working? Post your question to the comments and if it is something on my list of topics I had planned on creating a blog post about I will move it to the top of the list.

- by AWE
This is what advanced settings tell me: Shell Laptop lid close action on battery suspend Shell Laptop lid close action when on AC suspend I couldn't post a screenshot because "new users aren't allowed to post images. Earn more than 10 reputation to post images" The screen is on when I open the lid after closing for a few seconds. But not when I suspend from the session menu. Still the battery on my Dell inspiron N5110 is always empty when I get back to it after closing the lid. 'Why' is my question.

• A verdade sobre o NuGet e seu futuro (pt-BR)

- by srecosta

• Translating Fusion Apps Customizations: Composers mean Usable Apps in Any Language

- by ultan o'broin
Quick shoutout for the Fusion Applications (Cloud Applications to you) Developer Relations blog post about translating Fusion apps customizations using composers and other tools and utilities provided by Oracle. Great to see Fusion help customizations included in the post, as well as software, and it also includes a nice heads up on what's coming to enable customers to make changes to text themselves in Release 8 of Oracle's Cloud Applications. I am proud to say that I logged the enhancements for what's coming in Release 8 to come to life and also wrote a spec for its requirements based on the customer research done internationally through the Oracle Usability Advisory Board). Remember, copywriting is design and translated versions means reflecting local UX requirements too! Nice post guys!

• Read the Comments!

Hopefully this will be the start of a renewed posting binge! A piece of advice, if you are searching for a solution to an issue, or a recommendation, or anything else on the web, when you find a post or a forum thread do 2 things. First, check the date on the post of thread. If it is older it may no longer be fully up to date and or inaccurate. Bear that in mind. Second, READ THE COMMENTS! Often small omissions or other issues in the post itself are resolved in the comments. If the solution to your issue does not appear to work check the comments. There may be a step missing or something else relavent that was raised by a prior reader or the author themselves. Cheers, Robert Porter

• Google indexing pages very slowly [duplicate]

- by Clark
This question already has an answer here: Older post not indexed, new post indexed right away? 1 answer Is there anything I can do to speed up the time it takes to index my pages? It's currently indexing them on it's own time I believe which is every 2 - 3 days and when working in music and media I need to have the latest post fairly quickly. My robots.txt file is. User-agent: * Disallow: /wp-admin/ Disallow: /wp-content/ Disallow: /wp-includes/ sitemap: http://vipes.us/sitemapindex.xml If I am understanding this correctly, I would put this URL into Google http://vipes.us/sitemapindex.xml. But in doing so I still only get some of my pages indexed?

• Will I get penalised by google for overflow hidden? [duplicate]

- by Rascal Capac
This question already has an answer here: How bad is it to use display: none in CSS? 5 answers I have 2 divs next to each other, div A and div B. Div A displays a whole wordpress post and div B displays about 15 excerpts of posts with the same tag. To get this looking nice I set the hight of div B to be the same as the hight of div A with javaScript. This means alot of post excerpts will be hidden due to overflow hidden on div B. Will Google penalise me for this, and if so, how can I make this work and still please Google? Ps. I would gladly prevent the excerpts from being indexed but the main post must be indexed Ds.

• Moving Day

- by Christopher House
I've decided that it's time for me to move on from Geeks with Blogs. It's been a great platform but unforuntately I've not used it nearly as much as I should. It's been over a year and a half since my last post. It's not that I haven't had worthwhile stuff to post, it's more due to a lack of motivation. Knowing how I work, I think part of the problem with me using GWB is that it's free. If I don't use it, I don't feel like I'm wasting anything. With that in mind, I've decided to move to a paid host in hopes that drives me to post more frequently. My new blog is located at the following address:http://thirteendaysaweek.comIn the coming days and weeks I'll be working on moving my content to the new site and will leave posts here that redirect to the new site.

• Error 15 after manually installing Ubuntu 12.04 dualboot windows 7

- by indraisme
(this post contains as the same as my preceding post on Grub rescue problem after installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS since I've post it on the wrong place) Thanks God I found this page. I'm a newby from Indonesia, and I have a laptop with 2 OSes (7 and Precise) installed. I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 manually by replacing Blankon 4.0's (an Ubuntu-based Indonesian distro) partition. I made /boot mountpoint and then chose it as the place for bootloading. As the result, I've been experiencing error 15 until now, and I have to boot my laptop from Paragon rescue kit every time I want to use it. Is there any way to solve the problem? Terima kasih (Thanks)

• AZGroups.org Postcard Idea

VistaPrint.com is a place that prints very cheap (free sometimes) business cards and post cards. I’ve used them in the past for my user group business cards. The printing is free, but you have to pay fro shipping, and they usually have a VistaPrint Logo on them. For community stuff, it’s great. I received an email this morning about a free post card offer, and I thought I would put together a post card that promotes the AZGroups.org calendar. This calendar is meant to be a simple calendar...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
