  • Bizarre static_cast trick?

    - by Rob
While perusing the Qt source code I came across this gem: template <class T> inline T qgraphicsitem_cast(const QGraphicsItem *item) { return int(static_cast<T>(0)->Type) == int(QGraphicsItem::Type) || (item && int(static_cast<T>(0)->Type) == item->type()) ? static_cast<T>(item) : 0; } Notice the static_cast<T>(0)->Type? I've been using C++ for many years but have never seen 0 being used in a static_cast before. What is this code doing and is it safe? Background: If you derive from QGraphicsItem you are meant to declare an unique enum value called Type that and implement a virtual function called type that returns it, e.g.: class Item : public QGraphicsItem { public: enum { Type = MAGIC_NUMBER }; int type() const { return Type; } ... }; You can then do this: QGraphicsItem* item = new Item; ... Item* derivedItem = qgraphicsitem_cast<Item*>(item); This will probably help explain what that static_cast is trying to do.

  • iPhone time comparison

    - by Rob
I am trying to figure out how to create an 'if' statement that uses a time value as a condition. For example: if (time <= 10:00) { score = 3; } else if (time <= 20:00) { score = 5; } else { score = 9; } I know that a string of "5:23" cannot be compared this way but I don't think I can just turn a string value like that directly into an integer. Any thoughts?

  • UIViewController: setToolbarItems vs navigationItem

    - by Paul Sanwald
my application has a UIViewController subclass which is being managed by a UINavigationController. In the viewDidLoad of my UIViewController subclass, I was attempting to add a UIBarButtonItem to the toolbar like this: settingsButton = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithTitle:@"Settings" style:UIBarButtonItemStylePlain target:self action:@selector(viewSettings:)]; [self setToolbarItems:[NSArray arrayWithObject:settingsButton]]; this wasn't working out for me, so after some googling around, I tried this: [[self navigationItem] setRightBarButtonItem:settingsButton]; which worked out fine. from reading the UIViewController documentation, I'm still confused about why setToolbarItems wasn't working. I verified in the debugger that the button was in the toolbarItems array in the viewDidAppear method. the button itself just wasn't appearing on my toolbar. so, my question is, why didn't setToolbarItems work for me in the first code snippet? I don't have the toolbar configured in my xib for this view controller at all, if that makes a difference.

  • GCommit doesn't work with fugitive.vim under windows xp?

    - by Paul Wicks
I've just discovered fugitive.vim, which is pretty cool. However, I've run into a problem (this is using windows xp, msys git 1.7, fugitive.vim 1.1, and gvim 7.2). Adding files to the index and checking the status works just fine, but when I do a :GCommit, a command prompt flashes for a second and nothing happens. No way to type a commit message and nothing is committed. Is this a bug? Am I doing something wrong?

  • Access variable value using string representing variable's name

    - by Paul Ridgway
Hello everyone, If the title was not clear, I will try to clarify what I am asking: Imagine I have a variable called counter, I know I can see its current value by doing something like: std::cout << counter << std::endl; However, assume I have lots of variables and I don't know which I'm going to want to look at until runtime. Does anyone know a way I can fetch the value of a variable by using its name, for example: std::cout << valueOf("counter") << std::endl; I feel being able to do this might make debugging large complex projects easier. Thanks in advance for your time.

  • How to submit to the server with JQuery.UI Dialog and ASP.Net?

    - by Paul
    Hi, I'm looking for a way to submit information captured in a JQuery Dialog to the server in ASP.Net. I originally thought it would work with a 'hidden' asp button, but the click doesn't seem to be submitting the form. Here's the code I have so far: <script type="text/javascript"> jQuery(document).ready(function() { var dlg = jQuery("#dialog").dialog({ bgiframe: true, autoOpen: false, height: 150, width: 300, modal: true, buttons: { "Add": function() { var btn = document.getElementById("<%=btnAdd.ClientID %>"); if (btn) btn.click(); $(this).dialog("close"); } } }); $("#dialog").parent().appendTo("#dialog_target"); }); </script> <div id="hidden" style="visibility:hidden" > <!-- Hidden button that actually triggers server add --> <asp:Button ID="btnAdd" runat="server" style="display:none" OnClick="btnAdd_Click" /> <!-- Hidden Delete Dialog --> <div id="dialog" title="New Additional Skill"> <label>Additional Skill Name:</label> <asp:TextBox ID="_txtNewSkillName" runat="server" /> </div> Any pointers?

  • Closed Source Java Applications

    - by Paul
I am taking programming courses and we have been discussing Open Source and having a bit of an argument over the confusion. Just because Java is Open Source, the licensing on developed applications starts at the developer, correct? Someone is arguing about the use of code from a complete program just because "Java is Open Source". If I write a Java application, what are the limitations on how I can distribute it or how someone else can use it? Assume here that I DO NOT want someone having access to my source. Thanks

  • What do people find difficult about C pointers?

    - by Paul
From the number of questions posted here, it's clear that people have some pretty fundemental issues when getting their heads around pointers and pointer arithmetic. I'm curious to know why. They've never really caused me major problems (although I first learned about them back in the Neolithic). In order to write better answers to these questions, I'd like to know what people find difficult. So, if you're struggling with pointers, or you recently were but suddenly "got it", what were the aspects of pointers that caused you problems?

  • INotifyPropertyChanged event listener within respective class not firing on client side (silverlight)

    - by Rob
    I'm trying to work out if there's a simple way to internalize the handling of a property change event on a Custom Entity as I need to perform some bubbling of the changes to a child collection within the class when the Background Property is changed via a XAML binding: public class MyClass : INotifyPropertyChanged { [Key] public int MyClassId { get; set; } [DataMember] public ObservableCollection<ChildMyClass> MyChildren { get; set; } public string _backgroundColor; [DataMember] public string BackgroundColor { get { return this._backgroundColor; } set { this._backgroundColor = value; if (this.PropertyChanged != null) { this.PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs("BackgroundColor")); } } } public MyClass() { this.BackgroundColor = "#FFFFFFFF"; this.PropertyChanged += MyClass_PropertyChanged; } public event PropertyChangedEventHandler PropertyChanged; void MyClass_PropertyChanged(object sender, System.ComponentModel.PropertyChangedEventArgs e) { //Do something here - fires client side but not server side } } I can listen to the event by externalizing it without any problems but it's an ugly way to handle something that want to set and forget inside my class e.g.: public class SomeOtherClass { public SomeOtherClass() { MyClass mc = new MyClass(); mc.PropertyChanged += MyClass_PropertyChanged; } void MyClass_PropertyChanged(object sender, System.ComponentModel.PropertyChangedEventArgs e) { MyClass mc = (MyClass)sender; mc.UpdateChildren(); } }

  • Warning on standard headers after upgrading to NetBeans 6.8...

    - by paul
After upgrading to NetBeans 6.8 on my Mac, some standard headers generate a warning. The warning is "There are unresolved includes inside <string>". <string> is just an example and <iostream> and <map> have the same warning. The project builds and runs fine; however, I would like to resolve these warnings. Has anybody else seen this problem? And is there any way to make that warning go away? I also didn't see this problem when I upgraded to 6.8 on Linux.

  • iPhone producing strange results on 'if' statement

    - by Rob
I have a UIPicker where the user inputs a specified time (i.e. 13:00, 13:01, 13:02, etc.) - which determines their score. Once they hit the button an alert comes up with the score that is determined through this 'if-else' statement. Everything seems to work great MOST of the time - but I am getting some erratic behavior. This is the code: //Gets my value from the UIPicker and then converts it into a format that can be used in the 'if' statement. NSInteger runRow = [runTimePicker selectedRowInComponent:2]; NSString *runSelected = [runTimePickerData objectAtIndex:runRow]; NSString *runSelectedFixed = [runSelected stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString:@":" withString:@"."]; //The actual 'if' statment. if ([runSelectedFixed floatValue] <= 13.00) { runScore = 100; } else if ([runSelectedFixed floatValue] <= 13.06) { runScore = 99; } else if ([runSelectedFixed floatValue] <= 13.12) { runScore = 97; } else if ([runSelectedFixed floatValue] <= 13.18) { runScore = 96; } else if ([runSelectedFixed floatValue] <= 13.24) { runScore = 94; } else if ([runSelectedFixed floatValue] <= 13.30) { runScore = 93; } else if ([runSelectedFixed floatValue] <= 13.36) { runScore = 92; } else if ([runSelectedFixed floatValue] <= 13.42) { runScore = 90; } else if ([runSelectedFixed floatValue] <= 13.48) { runScore = 89; } else if ([runSelectedFixed floatValue] <= 13.54) { runScore = 88; } Now, when I test the program, I will get the expected result when I choose '13:00' which is '100'. I also get the expected result of '99' when I choose all of the times between '13:01 and 13:05'. BUT, when I choose '13:06' it gives me a score of '97'. I also get a score of '97' on '13:07 through 13:12' - which is the desired result. Why would I get a '97' right on '13:12' but not get a '99' right on '13:06'???? Could this be a memory leak or something???

  • Javascript not reading value from hidden textBox - JQuery C#

    - by Paul van Valkenburgh
I'm a non-specialist with JavaScript / JQuery and I'm having trouble figuring out why my script doesn't work. When my C# page loads, I have a hidden textBox txtHiddenKeywordArray which gets dynamically filled with comma separated values like... horse, buggy, track I'm trying to use the highlight functionality in jquery.highlight-3.js where I have a label text field that will contain and highlight the words in the keywords list. I'm using the script <script language="javascript" type="text/javascript"> var myString = document.getElementById('<%=txtHiddenKeywordArray.ClientID%>').val() myArray = myString.split(" "); $(document).ready(function () { for (i = 0; i < myArray.length; i++) $("p").highlight(myArray[i]) }); </script> Here is the textBox declaration : <asp:TextBox ID="txtHiddenKeywordArray" ClientIDMode="Static" runat="server" Visible="false"></asp:TextBox> It worked great when I hard coded the values of var myString. I've tried researching it and keep seeing the same example of the way I have it done. The page does use a MasterPage. Could this affect it? Any idea how I can get the script to see the values from the textbox? Do I need a RegisterStartUpScript or something? Thanks for any help you can provide.

  • session variable not available in global before(:each, :type => :controller)

    - by Rob
Hi, I'm refactoring some specs, in controller specs I have a before(:each) which sets up things required in the session my before filter is... config.before(:each, :type => :controller) do ... session[:current_user] = @user session[:instance] = @instance ... end @user and @instance are also set in the before(:each) i've just hidden them for readability here I get the following error when running the controller tests undefined method `session' for nil:NilClass I would expect the global before callbacks to have the same things as the ones in the individual tests but I guess maybe they are loaded before the rails environment has been initialised? Thanks

  • Is it possible to resolve domain names to an IP address with PHP?

    - by Rob
Well, very simple question. So that's good news for you, I guess. More thorough explanation: I have a PHP script allowing me to add urls to a database. I want the script to resolve the url to an IP address as well, to store that, too. However, some of the URLs are like this: http://111.111.111.111/~example/index.php So it also needs to work with that. I'm not SURE that this is possible, but it only makes sense it would be. So: Is it possible, and if so, how?

  • md5_file() not working with IP addresses?

    - by Rob
Here is my code relating to the question: $theurl = trim($_POST['url']); $md5file = md5_file($theurl); if ($md5file != '96a0cec80eb773687ca28840ecc67ca1') { echo 'Hash doesn\'t match. Incorrect file. Reupload it and try again'; When I run this script, it doesn't even output an error. It just stops. It loads for a bit, and then it just stops. Further down the script I implement it again, and it fails here, too: while($row=mysql_fetch_array($execquery, MYSQL_ASSOC)){ $hash = @md5_file($row['url']); $url = $row['url']; mysql_query("UPDATE urls SET hash='" . $hash . "' WHERE url='" . $url . "'") or die("MYSQL is indeed gay: ".mysql_error()); if ($hash != '96a0cec80eb773687ca28840ecc67ca1'){ $status = 'down'; }else{ $status = 'up'; } mysql_query("UPDATE urls SET status='" . $status . "' WHERE url='" . $url . "'") or die("MYSQL is indeed gay: ".mysql_error()); } And it checks all the URL's just fine, until it gets to one with an IP instead of a domain, such as: http://188.72.215.195/config.php In which, again, the script then just loads for a bit, and then stops. Any help would be much appreciated, if you need any more information just ask.

  • How to write a build script for a C++ project

    - by Paul
I am developing a C++ application on Ubuntu. The application consists of several modules, each with its makefile. I want to have a customised command line build process that does the following: checks code out from a repository (for specified branch/tag) builds the app (release or debug as specified) logs any errors etc I am too lazy to learn Perl (I tried before, but cant seem to get my head around it). Are there any (preferably open source) tools anyone can suggest, or maybe a simpler scripting languuage - or do I really have to learn Perl?

  • odd behavior with java collections of parameterized Class objects

    - by Paul
Ran into some questionable behavior using lists of parameterized Class objects: ArrayList<Class<String>> classList = new ArrayList<Class<String>>(); classList.add(Integer.class); //compile error Class intClass = Integer.class; classList.add(intClass); //legal apparently, as long as intClass is not parameterized Found the same behavior for LinkedList, haven't tried other collections. Is it like this for a reason? Or have I stumbled on something?

  • ASP.NET Membership controls (can I see inside?)

    - by Paul Moss
Hello, I am looking at ASP.NET membership controls (2008) and have been dropping them onto web pages to see how it all works. In some ASP.NET starter kit web site examples that I downloaded, I notice that between the asp:control tags I can see all the tags of the constituent parts like the textboxes, labels and buttons etc. However with the membership control that I am using in 2008 I do not see these other tags. Is this because the starter kit examples are from an older version or is it possible to expose these inner tags? It seems that this would make it possible to customize the controls. Thanks [email protected]

  • MySQL Update query with left join and group by

    - by Rob
I am trying to create an update query and making little progress in getting the right syntax. The following query is working: SELECT t.Index1, t.Index2, COUNT( m.EventType ) FROM Table t LEFT JOIN MEvents m ON (m.Index1 = t.Index1 AND m.Index2 = t.Index2 AND (m.EventType = 'A' OR m.EventType = 'B') ) WHERE (t.SpecialEventCount IS NULL) GROUP BY t.Index1, t.Index2 It creates a list of triplets Index1,Index2,EventCounts. It only does this for case where t.SpecialEventCount is NULL. The update query I am trying to write should set this SpecialEventCount to that count, i.e. COUNT(m.EventType) in the query above. This number could be 0 or any positive number (hence the left join). Index1 and Index2 together are unique in Table t and they are used to identify events in MEvent. How do I have to modify the select query to become an update query? I.e. something like UPDATE Table SET SpecialEventCount=COUNT(m.EventType)..... but I am confused what to put where and have failed with numerous different guesses.
