  • How to bring the parent element with floated child elements to the center of the document?

    I have organized a menu. Its HTML is as follows: <ul class="topmenu"> <li><a href="sample.html">Text 1</a></li> <li><a href="sample.html">Text 2</a></li> <li><a href="sample.html">Text 3</a></li> <li><a href="sample.html">Text 4</a></li> <ul> This is a horizontal menu, so I have floated the list items to left to appear them in a horizontal line. I could have used display:inline to appear them in a single line, but since IE does not support it and I don't know any other way to do so, I used float:left;. It's css is: .topmenu { list-style:none; margin:0; padding:0; } .topmenu li { float:left; } This brings the menu in a perfect horizontal line, but the entire list is floated to the left. I want to bring the .topmenu to appear in the center of the document and keep the listitem inside it floated towards the left. I found that this is achievable by defining width property of the .topmenu, but I dont want to fix its width as the list-items are dynamically generated and thus could increase and decrease. Any one know of any solution?

  • Floats being pushed down in IE8 but not IE7 or Firefox

If you view it in IE8 compatibility mode, it doesn't happen, nor does it happen in Firefox. If you browse to a different page in IE8 the issue does not persist.   • Centered DIV w/ width dependant on text, buffered by two divs that should fill the containing DIV

    I have been wracking my brains on this seemingly small issue the whole day. My web dev friends are baffled and I could not find a suitable answer in my search of this site and others (though, I could have missed it somewhere along the way). Here's the problem: 3 DIVS within one fixed-width container DIV The center DIV has text that will be different on other sites The center DIV needs to be centered, and no larger than the text it contains. This is what I'd like to end up with The basic HTMl: <div id="container" > <div id="left" ></div> <div id="center" >Text inside center should resize this block</div> <div id="right" ></div> </div> Below, I removed most of the styles I have tried. This CSS currently centers the DIV (if I set it as an inline block), but I need the other divs to fill the left and right space remaining: #container { width:750px; text-align:center; } #left { background-color:#E85355; } #center { background-color:#CDD7D7; display:inline-block; } #right { background-color:#65A8A6; } I've tried floating, no-wrap, overflow, etc. Thanks a million to whomever can offer some help!     Looking at the CSS3 specs, I can't find any way to select any element that has no children. Let me explain. <body> <h1>Main Page</h1> <div id="main"> <div class="post"> <h2>Article 1</h1> <p>some text</p> </div> <div class="post"> <h2>Article 2</h1> <p>some text</p> </div> </div> </body> I'm looking for a CSS syntax to select the h1, the two h2 and the two p. A way to select in any page, all elements with no children. Any suggestion ? Sorry, I forgot to add the "empty" part, I am actually already using the *:empty selector, but it's not working for any tag that has a nodeText as a child. So it's working for any input, image, object, but not for h2, h1, or any p.

  • Why doesn't my <div> float around another floated <div> while other elements do?

    I have a container with background color green. Inside that green <div>, I have a <div> which is black and styled as a box (50px x 50px) - this <div> is floated to the left. Now if I add a <p> to my markup after the grey <div>, I'd expect it to float around the grey <div>. And it does. However, when I substitue with another <div> which is styled as box (set height and width), it doesn't float around anymore, but disappears behind the floating div. Even if I have first paragraphs which are floating around correctly and THEN I add the div (box), the paragraphs stop floating around and appear on another line.   • Use a table as container or not?

    I have created my entire website by using a main table, and having the content inside the table. Some ppl suggest this is wrong, and I would like to know what to do specifically in my situation. On my index.html I have a <table align="center"> and then all content in it. Now the content is in form of DIVS and they all have relative positioning, so they are relative to the table. For example: <table align="center"> <tr> <td> <div style="position:relative; left:14px; top:50px;"> CONTENT HERE... (Form, divs, images) </div> </td> </tr> </table> I have just gotten to the stage of browser compatibility. Without making any changes whatsoever, my website works perfect in FF, SAFARI, Chrome and Opera. Only trouble with IE. So for my Q, if you where me, would you change my layout and remove the tables, and instead use alot more css and alot more DIVS, or would you go with what I have? And please if you answer me, don't just provide me with the answer, but also a "why" that is... in other words, give me arguments and facts... Thanks

  • How do I size a second div to be 100% height underneath a fixed image?

    I'm using semi-transparent PNGs (due to the designer's overlapping of elements) and trying to achieve a layout that represents the design while still working well on the web. Thus I have simple HTML: <div id="right"> <div id="welcome"></div> <div id="welcomeRepeatingBottom"></div> </div> And I'm trying to use CSS as follows: #right { height: 100%; position: absolute; right: 0px; top: 0px; width: 430px; } #welcome { background-image: url("welcome.png"); height: 614px; width: 430px; position: absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px; } #welcomeRepeatingBottom { background: url("welcomeBottom.png") repeat-y; height: 100%; left: 0px; position: absolute; top: 614px; width: 430px; } The problem is...the #welcomeRepeatingBottom div can't overlap the #welcome div because of the transparency. What I really want is the #welcomeRepeatingBottom div to be height: 100% - 614px, but of course you can't do that. Am I missing something here or do I need to manipulate these values with JavaScript/JQuery?

  • I am trying to zip files individually, but the file type is unknown

    I am trying to zip some files with an unknown file type individually. I am using the following code in a batch script to do that: @ECHO OFF FOR %%A IN (bestbuy*nat*component.cpi*) DO "C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe" a -mx9 -m0=lzma2:d256m "%%~nA.7z" "%%A" The code will compress files individually ONLY if the file has an extension. Unfortunately the files that I have don't have any extension. In the code I am trying to zip files by doing a pattern match, the files are getting compressed into ONE file (which I do not want, I want each file compressed individually). Why does this code create separate zip files when the files have an extension (for example if I add .txt to the end of the files) and when there is no extension the code creates one zipped file. Can anyone please help me with the code to compress files with unknown file type so that each file gets compressed individually Your help would be greatly appreciated. Jason

  • Ubuntu and Windows 8 shared partition gets corrupted

    I have a dual boot (Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 8) system. Both systems have access to an NTFS "DATA" partition which contains all my images, documents, music and some application data like Chrome and Thunderbird Profiles which used by both OS. Everything was working fine in my Dual boot Ubuntu/Windows 7, but after updating to Windows 8 I am having a lot of troubles. First, sometimes, I add some files from Ubuntu into my DATA partition but they don't show up in Windows. Sometimes, I can't even use the DATA partition from Windows. When I try to save a file it gives an error "The directory or file is corrupted or unreadable". I need to run checkdisk to fix it but after some time, same error appears.   • Zero sized tar.gz file found inside a tar.gz file

    My current directory contains a single file like this- $ls -l -rw-r--r-- 1 root staff 8 May 28 09:10 pavan Now, I want to tar and gzip this file like $tar -cvf - * 2>/dev/null |gzip -vf9 > pavan.tar.gz 2>/dev/null (I am aware I am creating the zipped file in the same directory as the original file) When I run the above tar/gzip commands around 20 times, a few times I observe that the final tarred and zipped file pavan.tar.gz file has a ZERO sized pavan.tar.gz file. I am not sure from where is this zero sized file coming into the archive from. Note: I am NOT running tar/gzip commands on an already existing tar.gz file. I always make sure that the directory has only one file before running the commands On googling, as described here, I suspected that the tar.gz being created was also part of the file being archived. But in my case, gzip is the one who's creating the final file and by the time gzip runs, tar should be done tarring. This is happening on AIX but I've used Linux tag too, to draw more attention, as I guess the problem is platform independent.

    I was using windows 7 till yesterday. I tried to install ubuntu 14. 04 Lts version yesterday with in windows 7. But it was not succeeded. Then I decided to install ubuntu only. By mistake I installed ubuntu in whole disk. After that to get deleted partitions I installed testdisk. I also used deeper search option. Now I'm getting "file system damaged". It shows The hard disk (320GB /298 GiB) seems to small! (<473 GB /441 GB) Check the Harddisk size: HD Jumpers setings, BIOS detection... The following partitions can't be recovered: Partition start end size in sectrors Linux 19077 177 45 57604 81 13 618930716 Linux 19080 192 57 57607 96 25 618930716 With ubcd also I used testdisk option. Same result comes."cannot open file system. File system seems damaged ". I have all my stuff in hard disk. Please help me to get recover my files in deleted partitions.

  • CSS: Freeze table header and first column, *but only on certain axes*

    Hello all, I have a variation on a common question, and I'll try to explain it as best I can. It may take some visualization on your part. I have an HTML table (in reality there are tables within tables within divs within tables -- I'm using the JSGantt plugin). I'd like for the table header to be frozen only when I scroll down on the y-axis, but if I need to scroll right to see more data, I would like it to scroll right. Meanwhile, as I scroll down (with the header row staying put), I'd like the first column of the table to scroll down with me. But when I scroll right, I want the first column to stay put (but as I mentioned above, the header row to scroll with me). So essentially I've frozen the first column only on the x-axis and the header row only on the y-axis. I'll stop there for now. If anyone needs more clarification I can try to explain. I've tried this multiple ways, but I'm convinced that it may not be possible without some serious javascript. The table, by the way, is contained within an outer div with set dimensions, hence the need for me to scroll the data. Any help you can provide would be greatly appeciated. Thanks very much.

    I need a div with picture bg to overlay an image (with some amount transparency) when hovered on. I need to be able to have one transparent overlay that can be used and reused throughout the site on any image. My first attempt was round-about to say the least. Because I found out you cannot roll-over an invisible div I devised a sandwhich system in which the original image is the first layer, the overlay is the second layer, and the original image is third layer again. This way, when you roll-over, the original image disappears revealing the overlay image over the original image: http://www.nightlylabs.com/uploads/test.html So it works. Kinda. Because of you cannot interact with an visibility:invisible element (why?!) the roll-over flickers unless you rest the cursor on it. Any help? This method is bad so if anyone has a better one please comment.

  • Div positioning problem related to Relative and Absolute positioning

Everything is fine until the copy on the page begins to extend further down the page which then causes my content wells to extend down, behind, the footer.   • Flow diagram in html/css

    Hi, is there some good way to create a flow / swimline diagram without resorting to scripting or tables? I'm talking about showing different hosts sending packets (so hosts on the X axis, time on the Y and arrows to the destination host). It seems like too much elements for tables (especially the arrows spanning multiple columns either way), but on the other hand, divs would be hard to position in the right place horizontally (they'd have to be basically aligned to a specified "column"). Is there any good way out? Any helper frameworks? (I don't want to do canvas stuff unless really needed)
