  • Sharing swap space between Windows and Ubuntu

    - by Leftium
This Linux Swap Space Mini-HOWTO describes how to share swap space between Windows and Linux. Do these instructions still apply to Ubuntu in 2011? How should I modify the steps for Ubuntu? Is there a better approach to sharing swap space? Based on the HOWTO, it seems best to create a dedicated NTFS swap partition: Dedicated so the swap file will be contiguous and remain unfragmented. NTFS so both Windows and Ubuntu can read/write to it. (Or is FAT32 better for this purpose?) Then, configure Ubuntu to prepare the swap space for use by Linux on start up; by Windows on shut down. I want to dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 7 on my X301 laptop. However, my laptop only has a 64 GB SDD, so I would like to conserve as much disk space as possible. update: There is an alternate method using a special driver for Windows that let you use a Linux swap partition for temporary storage like a RAM-disk, but it doesn't seem to be as good...

  • Windows XP self-installing virus [closed]

    - by Oliver
Do you remember. Some years ago, there was a huge virus attacking Windows XP in its first version. Once you had installed Windows XP, and on your first internet access, the virus installed itself on your computer, closing your internet connection and making the computer reboot after some seconds. I wonder... How can a virus install itslef this way from nowhere ? Without any user action. You install Windows XP... the computer just connects itself to the internet (assuming Microsoft don't connect to bad sites on its first connection)... and you have a virus. There is something magic I don't understand here. Can someone explain me how that virus could attack Windows that way, without any user action on a fresh installed system...

  • Can't mount windows partition?

    - by C.J.
When I try to open the Windows Partition from Ubuntu I receive the error: Unable to mount 55 GB Filesystem Error mounting: mount exited without exit code 13: ntfs_mst_post_read_fixup_warn: magic: 0x04010400 size: 1024 usa_ofs: 1026 usa_count: 1026: Invalid argument Record 6 has no FILE magic (0x4010400) Failed to open inode FILE_Bitmap: Input/output error Failed to mount '/dev/sda2': Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more detail. Additionally, I can't open the Windows Partition. I've tried updating it many times but it won't show up on GRUB. Does anybody know what all this means? And how I might fix it? I thank you for any help in advance

  • How To Use Windows 8's Gestures on a Laptop Trackpad

    - by Chris Hoffman
While Windows 8 may seem a bit out of place on hardware without a touch screen, trackpad gestures can help bridge the gap. Gestures on a trackpad work similarly to gestures on a touch screen. Instead of moving the cursor to the corners of the screen, you can swipe the trackpad to reveal hidden menus and pinch your fingers to zoom in and out. • How To Make Images, Music, Video, and PDF Files Open On The Desktop in Windows 8

    - by Chris Hoffman
Windows 8 opens many types of files in the Windows 8 interface formerly known as Metro by default. If you’re at the desktop and double-click many types of media files, you’ll see a full-screen media viewer. You can easily prevent these media files from opening in the full-screen Windows 8 apps when you double-click them. All you have to do is change your default programs. • Changing Filename Case with TortoiseSVN on Windows [migrated]

    - by Brad Turner
I've been working on a development project using a Windows machine as a test server. Eventually, I'd like the "live" version to end up on a Linux machine. While trying to test on the Linux machine, it became apparent that I needed to change the case of several file names as Windows was case insensitive but Linux wasn't. When I changed the file name case in Windows, TortoiseSVN recognized that the file hand changed and marked my folders appropriately. However, when I tried to commit my changes, not only did TortoiseSVN tell me that no changes had been made, but it had actually reverted all of the file name changes I had made back to their original case. My question is, is there a simple way to alter the file name case from a Windows PC and have the changes appear in my repository? I'd like to avoid any kind of delete, commit, replace, commit scenario to keep my commits tidy if possible. Thanks!

  • Ubuntu 12.04 host – Virtualbox 4.1.12 Guest=Windows 7 – Network will not connect

    - by user287529
Ubuntu 12.04 host – Virtualbox 4.1.12 Guest=Windows 7 – Network will not connect. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 on an Acer Aspire 5742-7645 laptop with 4GB memory, Intel Core i3 processor, Intel HD Graphics, DVD drive, 802.1 b/g/n, and 500 GB HD. I connect to my router via a wireless connection. I have installed Virutalbox 4.1.12 from the Ubuntu Software Center and installed Guest additions 4.1.12 in the Windows 7 guest session. I have Windows XP and Windows 7 installed as guests in Virtual box The network settings are different for XP and 7 – see below. Network Settings XP guest = Adapter 1: PCnet-FAST III (NAT) - Network works perfectly and has worked well for several years. Network Settings Win 7 = Adapter 1: Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (Bridged adapter, eth1) Promiscuous Mode = allow all Cable connected = checked When I originally installed Windows 7, I tried NAT and the guest network would not connect. Once I changed the setting to the above (Bridged) the Network worked perfectly. However, what I believe is after updates (not sure if it was an Ubuntu or Windows update) the guest network stopped working and I can not get it to connect. • Sharing Files between Ubuntu 14.04 and Windows 8

    - by Matinn
I have Ubuntu and Windows 8 installed on one System. I am trying to share files between these two operating systems using an NTFS Partition wich was created by Windows. I don't have trouble accessing the data on this partition from Ubuntu, however if i create a file in Ubuntu, this file doesn't show up when I boot into Windows. Does anyone know how to do this. From what I have read file sharing should work without installing any additional Software, as I am not trying to access the Linux ext4 Partition from Windows.

  • Unable to boot windows 8.1 after installing Kubuntu 14.04

    - by user289452
I just installed Kubuntu 14.04, and I cannot boot into the previously installed Windows 8.1. As I read everywhere, this shouldn't be a problem: Kubuntu should recognize that Windows is there. But every time I start Kubuntu boots without asking anything. Thank you for your answers! UPDATE: I realized that I run a chkdsk on the Windows' partition, and I didn't let it end, so it may be marked as "unclean" as written here: Problem to enter in NTFS partition Still struggling to make it work, though.

  • Detect a USB drive being inserted - Windows Service

    - by Tom Bell
I am trying to detect a USB disk drive being inserted within a Windows Service, I have done this as a normal Windows application. The problem is the following code doesn't work for volumes. Registering the device notification: DEV_BROADCAST_DEVICEINTERFACE notificationFilter; HDEVNOTIFY hDeviceNotify = NULL; ::ZeroMemory(&notificationFilter, sizeof(notificationFilter)); notificationFilter.dbcc_size = sizeof(DEV_BROADCAST_DEVICEINTERFACE); notificationFilter.dbcc_devicetype = DBT_DEVTYP_DEVICEINTERFACE; notificationFilter.dbcc_classguid = ::GUID_DEVINTERFACE_VOLUME; hDeviceNotify = ::RegisterDeviceNotification(g_serviceStatusHandle, &notificationFilter, DEVICE_NOTIFY_SERVICE_HANDLE); The code from the ServiceControlHandlerEx function: case SERVICE_CONTROL_DEVICEEVENT: PDEV_BROADCAST_HDR pBroadcastHdr = (PDEV_BROADCAST_HDR)lpEventData; switch (dwEventType) { case DBT_DEVICEARRIVAL: ::MessageBox(NULL, "A Device has been plugged in.", "Pounce", MB_OK | MB_ICONINFORMATION); switch (pBroadcastHdr->dbch_devicetype) { case DBT_DEVTYP_DEVICEINTERFACE: PDEV_BROADCAST_DEVICEINTERFACE pDevInt = (PDEV_BROADCAST_DEVICEINTERFACE)pBroadcastHdr; if (::IsEqualGUID(pDevInt->dbcc_classguid, GUID_DEVINTERFACE_VOLUME)) { PDEV_BROADCAST_VOLUME pVol = (PDEV_BROADCAST_VOLUME)pDevInt; char szMsg[80]; char cDriveLetter = ::GetDriveLetter(pVol->dbcv_unitmask); ::wsprintfA(szMsg, "USB disk drive with the drive letter '%c:' has been inserted.", cDriveLetter); ::MessageBoxA(NULL, szMsg, "Pounce", MB_OK | MB_ICONINFORMATION); } } return NO_ERROR; } In a Windows application I am able to get the DBT_DEVTYP_VOLUME in dbch_devicetype, however this isn't present in a Windows Service implementation. Has anyone seen or heard of a solution to this problem, without the obvious, rewrite as a Windows application?

    - by Brad Bruce
What are the major differences between Windows CE and Windows Mobile for a programmer? I'd love to find a feature table, but haven't been able to find one on the Microsoft web site. I'm starting to work on a project involving industrial handheld terminals. I'm early into the design phase and need to find a comparison of Windows CE and Windows Mobile. Many of the people I'll be talking to jump on the first option that sounds "good enough". I want my first suggestion to be the best based on their needs. We're talking heavy duty hardware with a heavy duty price. I've got to get the programming questions out of the way early. We're currently a MFC6 and .Net 2.0 shop
