  • Why do I have no TTY on a basic Ubuntu 9.10 server install?

    I have reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10 Server several times on a bog standard 1RU server and each time I finish the install and reboot I see GRUB run and am then presented with a black screen. The machine is running just fine, as I am able to SSH in, but I can't see anything on the attached monitor. I have a simple LCD screen connected via VGA and a signal is apparently being output to it, as it doesn't go asleep. Looking at /var/log/syslog I see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 rsyslogd-2039: Could no open output file '/dev/xconsole' [try http://www.rsyslog.com/e/2039 ] However, I later see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 kernel: [ 0.001368] console [tty0] enabled Any thoughts?   • Any way to know what files were in a broken ZFS pool?

    I have a large ZFS pool of 4 combined drives. Now, the filesystem can not be mounted: pool: tank state: UNAVAIL status: One or more devices could not be opened. There are insufficient replicas for the pool to continue functioning. action: Attach the missing device and online it using 'zpool online'. see: http://www.sun.com/msg/ZFS-8000-3C scan: none requested config: NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM tank UNAVAIL 0 0 0 insufficient replicas c10t0d0 ONLINE 0 0 0 c8t0d0 UNAVAIL 0 0 0 cannot open c8t1d0 ONLINE 0 0 0 c10t1d0 ONLINE 0 0 0 Probably a broken drive (c8t0d0). I'm not overly concerned by the loss of the data, but I'd love to know exactly which files were in that pool. Is there any way to get a listing of what files were there?

  • Virtualbox Ubuntu 10.04 on Windows 7: networking won't work

    I have a virtualbox image that I created using libvirt from Ubuntu 10.04. It assigns a fixed IP address. I can start it up on my Windows 7 VirtualBox, but I cannot get networking to work. My colleague loaded the same image onto his Windows 7 and networking worked as a bridged connection. Therefore, I know that the image is good, it must be something about my Windows 7 installation. Any thoughts on where to look to get networking running in my virtual machine? Thanks, Herb

  • Fresh install of 64bit Ubuntu needs flash but adobe doesn't have a version for me.

    I need flash to watch YT videos. YT said "You need to upgrade your Adobe Flash Player to watch this video." with a link to download flash. I'm running 10.04 so I see possible choices for myself: 1) a .deb file for Ubuntu 8.04+ or APT (whats this??) for Ubuntu 9.04. I downloaded the deb file and when I opened it in the installer it said that I have the wrong architecture. Anyone have an idea about how to work around this?

  • change default userid for connecting to local AFP share?

    I've got Netatalk & Avahi running on a local Ubuntu server--I use two different userids, "afp" for Time Machine and "stew" to access my media files etc. In order to mount a shared directory on my server, I have to click "Connect As..." and enter my userid/password every time, because it always tries to log in using Time Machine's userid. I'm not sure if this is because that userid is set as default, or just because it's the last userid that logged in to that server--either way: Is there a way to change the default userid for connecting to a given server? Mega extra credit: I'd love to have this automated, such that my userid, "stew", is always logged in (and heck, it'd be great to have the directories always mounted, too!) whenever the server is available.   • Tomcat Solr times out

    (Plesk 10.4 centos 5.8 linux apache2 server, with Tomcat5 on port 8080 and Apache Solr) I get "The connection has timed out" on requesting domain.com:8080 or www.domain.com:8080 or ip.ad.dr.ess:8080 Every reason I can find why this might be seems not to be the case: Plesk thinks Tomcat is running fine and lists it as an active service. The firewall currently has an accept all rule on port 8080. There's nothing relevant in the catalina tomcat logs (/var/log/tomcat5) - just some stuff from last time tomcat was started. There's no record at all of the requests that fail. netstat -lnp | grep 8080 gives the following, which I beleive means Tomcat is listening to requests to port 8080 on all ip addresses from any ip and any port (please correct me if I'm wrong): : tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:8080 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 4018/java This covers every cause of this time out that I can find - so I must be missing something fundamental. It seems Tomcat is running, listening to the right port, is getting an appropriate IP address, is not obstructed by a firewall and is not failing after receiving a request in a way which would be recorded in the logs (so I believe it can't be out of memory, or anything like that). I'm all out of ideas on how to continue debugging this. I must have overlooked something obvious. Can anyone help?

  • Ext4 Input/Output Error Reboot via SSH

    I've got a remote appliance, and its disk IO seems to have locked up, trying to run anything that isn't already loaded results in errors like this: $ sudo shutdown -r 0 sudo: Can't open /var/lib/sudo/<machine_name>/0: Read-only file system sudo: unable to execute /sbin/shutdown: Input/output error I have SSH access to the appliance. I'm hoping that restarting the box will fix this (if not I have to go replace the box), but trying to restart it yields the above output. Anyone have any ideas???

    Possible Duplicate: My server's been hacked EMERGENCY I just got an e-mail from my hosting company that they got a report of malicious content being hosted on my vps. I was unaware of this and started looking into it. I discovered a file called /var/www/mysite.com/osc.htm. Soon after I discovered some weird php files wp-includes.php and ndlist.php both recognized as being PHP/WebShell.A.1 virus. I removed all these files but I'm unsure of what to do next. Can anyone help me analyze the output below of sudo netstat -A inet -p -e and give advice on what's best to do next.     I'm trying to set auto static ip. I've set the content of /etc/network/interfaces to be: auto lo auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.1.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.1. and /etc/resolv.conf to be: nameserver 192.168.1.1. It seems that the ip address have set successfully. However, when I plug out the lan cable and then plug it back, the ip address is not set. How can I make it automatically set the static ip when the lan cable is connected?

    I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 edition on my Acer 5738Z laptop. The screen size of my laptop is about 15'' but the screen resolution in Ubuntu is stuck at 1366x768. I know that my monitor could give better resolution, because previously I was running Win XP and I was able to set higher resolution there. So, my questions here: How do I increase my screen resolution, here? As per the answer given to a related question, I tried to edit the xorg.conf file, but I couldn't find the file in the place /etc/x11/. Should I create this file? If I have to install screen drivers separately, where could I find it?

  • Meraki's Accounting-Requests to RADIUS server

    I'm running a RADIUS server with some Meraki APs, the process of Authentications is fine... But it seems that the Meraki Cloud Controller is just sending the authentication packets and not the accounting requests. I've tested the RADIUS sending accounting requests with the radclient tool (locally) and it worked. I think that maybe my RADIUS server is ignoring the accounting requests from the MCC because there are some Vendor Specific Attributes that my RADIUS doesn't know. should I add a Meraki's dictionary to my RADIUS configurations? I'm kind of desperate, any idea?

  • Apache directory authorization bug (clicking cancel gives acces to partial content)

    I got a minor problem (as the site is not high priority) but still a very interesting one. I have an apache root domain wherein other sites live "/var/www/" And I have foo.example.com forwarding to "/var/www/foo-example" (wordpress site) The problem here is that when you go to foo.example.com you are prompted to enter credentials. If you hit cancel it gives you the access denied page. But when you go to the servers' direct IP (this gives you the default index page) and hit cancel when prompted for credentials it just keeps giving you the login screen, and after pressing cancel a few times more it gives (a perhaps cached) bare html part of the page. How do I prevent this from happening? Perhaps this is a bug... Even if I would block access to the root directory when going to the ip/foo-example it would still do this. And I want to keep all the directories within the www directory or at least all in the same.   • trouble shooting ntfs-loop-xen combination in wubi based grub of Ubuntu

    Here is a situation I installed Ubuntu on a laptop using Wubi in Windows 7 drive.*The laptop is not mine.*I have installed and things worked by now perfectly without any problem.We are trying to set up a Xen (virtualization)environment in this laptop. After setting up every thing cleanly.When I needed to boot with following grub entries menuentry "Xen Linux 2.6.32.27" { insmod ntfs set root='(hd0,2)' loopback loop0 /ubuntu/disks/root.disk set root=(loop0) multiboot /boot/xen.gz module /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32.27 dummy=dummy root=/dev/sda2 loop=/ubuntu/disks/root.disk ro console=tty0 module /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32.27 } I got error file not found error unknown command 'multiboot' error unknown command 'module' error unknown command 'module' Now to dig this issue further I reboot the machine and go to grub command prompt and manually pass on each of the above parameters which you see in the grub entry when I reached grub> insmod multiboot then I got following message on screen error:file not found. It looks like this wubi+ grub setup has just enough modules to use loopback file on ntfs, but the ACTUAL /boot directory is on the loopback NOT ntfs (hd0,2). Therefore any attempt to read any files from (hd0,2) simply wont work, cause there's no file there.I need to use insmod multiboot and command multiboot and module which are available in grub on a normal install without Wubi.But since the laptop is not mine so I am not allowed to partition it and have to make it work in this situation only. While a normal Kernel is still booting? How can I get module multiboot in this Wubi based install.

  • How to play from mic to speakers in Ubuntu Karmic?

    Ok, I have a silly problem. I have few bluetooth headsets lying around and I want to make DYI baby monitor out of them. All I need is for some application to listen to the mic and send it to the speakers. Loopback (even though it doesn't work) is not good enough, it'll send sound from the mic to the speakers in the same device but I need it to go across devices. So does anyone know some application that can do that? I'm looking for something small and easy to use, not jackd or similar.

  • Upstart script not working on Ubuntu

    I'm trying to write an upstart script to start orbited on startup. The script is as follows: #orbited start on startup stop on shutdown script exec /usr/local/bin/orbited --config=/etc/orbited.cfg end script When I run upstart orbited I get something like this: orbited start/running, process 605 But when I run status orbited right after doing that I get: orbited stop/waiting The script fails to start even though it says it's running. Any ideas? Thanks!
