  • ASP.NET High CPU Bringing Servers to their Knees

    - by user880954
Ok, our new build is having 100% cpu spikes on each server at random intervals. For long durations it make the site totally unresponsive - this will be at peak times as people in different countries log on to the site etc. We've looked at perfmom, memory profilers, CLR profiler, sql profilers, Red gate ants profiler, tried load testing in UAT - but cannot even reproduce the problem. This could mean only thousands of users hitting the live site causes it to happen. One pattern we did notice was that the new code - the broken build - actually uses noticably less threads. We are also using spring for IOC - does this have a bed reputation? To make things worse, we cannot deploy to live due to the business impact - so cannot narrow the problem down to subset of the new features we've added. We truly are destroyed - has anyone got any battle scars that may save us a few lives?

  • .NET framework 4 backwards compatibility.

    - by Dark.Lama
Hi! I had installed .NET framework 4 in my system. It says that .NET framework 4 is backwards compatible with all previous versions. But an app installer still asks me to install .NET.F.W. 3.5 SP1. What should I do to make the installer aware of .NET 4's presence? Is it necessary to install .NET. 3.5 SP1 too? (It is a big setup ~250 MB)

  • ASP.NET, HTTP 404 and SEO

    - by paxer
The other day our SEO Manager told me that he is not happy about the way ASP.NET application return HTTP response codes for Page Not Found (404) situation. I've started research and found interesting things, which could probably help others in similar situation.  1) By default ASP.NET application handle 404 error by using next web.config settings           <customErrors defaultRedirect="GenericError.htm" mode="On">             <error statusCode="404" redirect="404.html"/>           </customErrors> However this approach has a problem, and this is actually what our SEO manager was talking about. This is what HTTP return to request in case of Page not Found situation. So first of all it return HTTP 302 Redirect code and then HTTP 200 - ok code. The problem : We need to have HTTP 404 response code at the end of response for SEO purposes.  Solution 1 Let's change a bit our web.config settings to handle 404 error not on static html page but on .aspx page      <customErrors defaultRedirect="GenericError.htm" mode="On">             <error statusCode="404" redirect="404.aspx"/>           </customErrors> And now let's add in Page_Load event on 404.aspx page next lines     protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)             {                 Response.StatusCode = 404;             } Now let's run our test again Now it has got better, last HTTP response code is 404, but my SEO manager still was not happy, becouse we still have 302 code before it, and as he said this is bad for Google search optimization. So we need to have only 404 HTTP code alone. Solution 2 Let's comment our web.config settings     <!--<customErrors defaultRedirect="GenericError.htm" mode="On">             <error statusCode="404" redirect="404.html"/>           </customErrors>--> Now, let's open our Global.asax file, or if it does not exist in your project - add it. Then we need to add next logic which will detect if server error code is 404 (Page not found) then handle it.       protected void Application_Error(object sender, EventArgs e)             {                            Exception ex = Server.GetLastError();                 if (ex is HttpException)                 {                     if (((HttpException)(ex)).GetHttpCode() == 404)                         Server.Transfer("~/404.html");                 }                 // Code that runs when an unhandled error occurs                 Server.Transfer("~/GenericError.htm");                  } Cool, now let's start our test again... Yehaa, looks like now we have only 404 HTTP response code, SEO manager and Google are happy and so do i:) Hope this helps!

  • Posting from ASP.NET WebForms page to another URL

    - by hajan
Few days ago I had a case when I needed to make FORM POST from my ASP.NET WebForms page to an external site URL. More specifically, I was working on implementing Simple Payment System (like Amazon, PayPal, MoneyBookers). The operator asks to make FORM POST request to a given URL in their website, sending parameters together with the post which are computed on my application level (access keys, secret keys, signature, return-URL… etc). So, since we are not allowed nesting another form inside the <form runat=”server”> … </form>, which is required because other controls in my ASPX code work on server-side, I thought to inject the HTML and create FORM with method=”POST”. After making some proof of concept and testing some scenarios, I’ve concluded that I can do this very fast in two ways: Using jQuery to create form on fly with the needed parameters and make submit() Using HttpContext.Current.Response.Write to write the form on server-side (code-behind) and embed JavaScript code that will do the post Both ways seemed fine. 1. Using jQuery to create FORM html code and Submit it. Let’s say we have ‘PAY NOW’ button in our ASPX code: <asp:Button ID="btnPayNow" runat="server" Text="Pay Now" /> Now, if we want to make this button submit a FORM using POST method to another website, the jQuery way should be as follows: <script src="http://ajax.aspnetcdn.com/ajax/jquery/jquery-1.5.1.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script type="text/javascript">     $(function () {         $("#btnPayNow").click(function (event) {             event.preventDefault();             //construct htmlForm string             var htmlForm = "<form id='myform' method='POST' action='http://www.microsoft.com'>" +                 "<input type='hidden' id='name' value='hajan' />" +             "</form>";             //Submit the form             $(htmlForm).appendTo("body").submit();         });     }); </script> Yes, as you see, the code fires on btnPayNow click. It removes the default button behavior, then creates htmlForm string. After that using jQuery we append the form to the body and submit it. Inside the form, you can see I have set the htttp://www.microsoft.com URL, so after clicking the button you should be automatically redirected to the Microsoft website (just for test, of course for Payment I’m using Operator's URL). 2. Using HttpContext.Current.Response.Write to write the form on server-side (code-behind) and embed JavaScript code that will do the post The C# code behind should be something like this: public void btnPayNow_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) {     string Url = "http://www.microsoft.com";     string formId = "myForm1";     StringBuilder htmlForm = new StringBuilder();     htmlForm.AppendLine("<html>");     htmlForm.AppendLine(String.Format("<body onload='document.forms[\"{0}\"].submit()'>",formId));     htmlForm.AppendLine(String.Format("<form id='{0}' method='POST' action='{1}'>", formId, Url));     htmlForm.AppendLine("<input type='hidden' id='name' value='hajan' />");     htmlForm.AppendLine("</form>");     htmlForm.AppendLine("</body>");     htmlForm.AppendLine("</html>");     HttpContext.Current.Response.Clear();     HttpContext.Current.Response.Write(htmlForm.ToString());     HttpContext.Current.Response.End();             } So, with this code we create htmlForm string using StringBuilder class and then just write the html to the page using HttpContext.Current.Response.Write. The interesting part here is that we submit the form using JavaScript code: document.forms["myForm1"].submit() This code runs on body load event, which means once the body is loaded the form is automatically submitted. Note: In order to test both solutions, create two applications on your web server and post the form from first to the second website, then get the values in the second website using Request.Form[“input-field-id”] I hope this was useful post for you. • ASP.Net performance counters

    - by nikolaosk
I was involved in designing and implementing an ASP.Net application some time ago. After we deployed the application we wanted to monitor various aspects of the application. We can use the Performance Monitor. In my windows Server 2008 machine, I go to Start-Run and type " perfmon " and the Performance monitor window pops up. There are thousands of counters in there and it is impossible for anyone to know them all. Most people I know use the Performance Monitor to add counters to monitor SQL Server...(read more)

In this post I would like to talk about LINQ to SQL and its native lazy loading functionality. I will show you how you can change this behavior. We will create a simple ASP.Net application to demonstrate this. I have seen a lot of people struggling with performance issues. That is mostly due to the lack of knowledge of how LINQ internally works.Imagine that we have two tables Products and Suppliers (Northwind database). There is one to many relationship between those tables-entities. One supplier...(read more)

  • Dynamic URL of asp.net web service with web reference

    - by Jalpesh P. Vadgama
It’s been a while I am writing this. But never late.. So I am writing this. Before some time one of friend asked about the URL of web service when we add reference. So I am writing this. Some of you may find this very basic but still many of people does not know this that’s why I am writing this. In today’s world we have so many servers like development, preproduction and production etc. and for all the server location or URL of web service will be different. But with asp.net when you add a web reference to your web application it’s create a web reference settings in web.config where you can change this path. So it’s very easy to just change that path and you don’t have to add web reference again. Read More

  • How to profile LINQ to Entities queries in your asp.net applications - part 1

I have been teaching ASP.Net and EF in one of my classes and I have been asked on the various ways we can profile database activity. Everyone that I know that uses EF as its data access layer has the same question. "How can I see the T-SQL code that the LINQ to Entities engine generates on the fly?" I know a lot of people use VS studio built-in visualisers but that is not enough. A lot of developers use SQL Server Profiler. That is also a good solution since we can see the queries(generated from...(read more)

  • Intro to Sessions in ASP.Net

Sessions are used to pass the value from one page to another with no effort from the user. With a session, if the user inputs values on the original page and you need to access them on another page, you can retrieve the values stored in the session without making the user submit those values again. Sessions are important to any user-related authentication (if you're using the https protocol), user-related validation and customization of visitor experiences in your website. This tutorial will use Visual Basic to illustrate ASP.NET sessions, though the code can be converted to equivalent C# code...

  • Why can't I create a database in an empty ASP MVC 2 project using Project->Add->New Item->SQL Server

    - by Dr Dork
I'm diving head first into ASP MVC and am playing around with creating and manipulating a database. I did a search and found this tutorial for creating a database, however when I follow it, I get this error when trying to add a new database to my fresh, empty ASP MVC 2 project... A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) The only requirement the tutorial mentioned was SQL Server Express, but when I went to download it, it said it was already installed. I'm assuming it was part of the VS 2010 RC I installed and am running. So I don't know what else I need if I am missing something. This is all new to me, so I'm sure I'm missing something obvious here and after I'm done posting this question, I plan to do some more research into the topic of databases and how they work with ASP MVC. In the meantime, I was you could help me answer a couple high level questions... What am I missing/forgetting to do that is causing this error? Any suggestions for good resources/tutorials that focus on using databases with ASP MVC? I've done a lot of database programming in the past, so I'm familiar with the concepts of relational databases and the SQL language. I wish I could find a good resource for learning how to work with them in an ASP dev environment, as well as a good breakdown of all the related technologies used for working with them (i.e. LINQ to SQL). Thanks so much in advance for all your help! I'm going to start researching these questions right now.

  • Weird - "The EntityReference object could not be serialized" when serializing from an ASP.NET Web Si

    - by Mikey Cee
I have an Entity Framework data model. Part of the model is a Customer entity. The web service provides a method to get a customer, and to receive an updated version of this customer to be persisted. To test this, I created a new ASP.NET web Application, (Solution Add New Project ASP.NET Web Application), then added a reference to my service reference using the standard Add Service Reference dialog. I then call the service using the following code: var client = new CustomerServiceClient(); var customer = client.GetCustomerByID(18); // get it customer.LimitDown = 100; // change it client.SaveCustomer(customer); // persist it Everything works as expected. Now, I do exactly the same thing, but this time with as ASP.NET Web Site (Solution Add New Web Site ASP.NET Web Site). I add the reference in a similar fashion and copy and paste the code above into the new site. But now I get the following exception thrown on the 4th line: System.InvalidOperationException The EntityReference object could not be serialized. This type of object cannot be serialized when the RelationshipManager belongs to an entity object that does not implement IEntityWithRelationships. • Searching for flexible way to specify conenction string used by APS.NET membership

    - by bzamfir
Hi, I develop an asp.net web application and I use ASP.NET membership provider. The application uses the membership schema and all required objects inside main application database However, during development I have to switch to various databases, for different development and testing scenarios. For this I have an external connection strings section file and also an external appsettings section, which allow me to not change main web.config but switch the db easily, by changing setting only in appsettings section. My files are as below: <connectionStrings configSource="connections.config"> </connectionStrings> <appSettings file="local.config"> .... ConnectionStrings looks as usual: <connectionStrings> <add name="MyDB1" connectionString="..." ... /> <add name="MyDB2" connectionString="..." ... /> .... </connectionStrings> And local.config as below <appSettings> <add key="ConnectionString" value="MyDB2" /> My code takes into account to use this connection string But membership settings in web.config contains the connection string name directly into the setting, like <add name="MembershipProvider" connectionStringName="MyDB2" ...> .... <add name="RoleProvider" connectionStringName="MyDB2" ...> Because of this, every time I have to edit them too to use the new db. Is there any way to config membership provider to use an appsetting to select db connection for membership db? Or to "redirect" it to read connection setting from somewhere else? Or at least to have this in some external file (like local.config) Maybe is some easy way to wrap asp.net membership provider intio my own provider which will just read connection string from where I want and pass it to original membership provider, and then just delegate the whole membership functionality to asp.net membership provider. Thanks.

  • Mixing application modules between Silverlight and ASP.NET

    - by jkohlhepp
Background: I work in a suite of ASP.NET applications that have several different "modules". The applications all share a main menu, so they all link to one-another. The modules are the high-level areas of the application. So, for example, it might be Payments, Orders, Customers, Products, etc. And Payments and Orders are in one app and Products and Customers are in another. Some of these menu links are "deep links", for example it might be a link to a particular page within the Customers module, such as Create New Customer. The issue: We are about to start a project that will add several more modules to this suite, probably as a new .NET application. I'm thinking about doing these new modules in Silverlight (for various reasons that are not material to the question). If I were to do that, I need to make the menu look the same as the menu in ASP.NET, as the users still need to feel like they are inside one "application". My questions: How should I organize the Silverlight project(s) so that I can "deep link" from ASP.NET pages into particular modules in the Silverlight app? What is even the best idea for creating these different Silverlight "modules"? If I had something that would've been a page in ASP.NET (for example - Create Customer), should each one of those be a separate Silverlight app? Or should it be a separate User Control? Or something else? Should I reuse our shared ASP.NET menu, and deep link to different Silverlight "modules" even within the new application? Or should I reimplement the menu in Silverlight for navigation within the app? Are there menu controls for Silverlight that look similar to ASP.NET menus (with flyout submenus in this case)? Could I maybe even share a SiteMap XML file between them? Edit: After looking around a bit more, it seems like PRISM might be the answer for some of my issues. It would allow me to modularize the different chunks of Silverlight that I have. And it would allow me to define a "master page" in Silverlight where I could host the menu. Do I have this right?

  • Long overdue (for me) question about disposing managed objects in .Net, VB.Net, C#

    - by Jules
I can't believe I'm still confused about this but, any way, lets finally nail it: I have a class that overrides OnPaint to do some drawing. To speed things up, I create the pens, brushes etc before hand, in the construtor, so that OnPaint does not need to keep creating and disposing them. Now, I make sure that I always dispose of such objects, but I have the feeling I don't need to because, despite the fact they implement IDisposable, they're managed objects. Is this correct?

    I have a simple user control with this code: <%@ Control Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="Pager.ascx.cs" Inherits="Pager" %> <table style="width: 100%;"> <tr> <td runat="server" id="PageControls"> <!-- This button has the problem: --> <asp:Button ID="btnPrevPage" runat="server" Text="&larr;" OnClick="btnPrevPage_Click" /> Page <asp:DropDownList runat="server" ID="ddlPage" AutoPostBack="true" OnSelectedIndexChanged="ddlPage_SelectedIndexChanged" /> of <asp:Label ID="lblTotalPages" runat="server" /> <!-- This button has the problem: --> <asp:Button ID="btnNextPage" runat="server" Text="&rarr;" OnClick="btnNextPage_Click" /> </td> <td align="right" runat="server" id="itemsPerPageControls"> <asp:Literal ID="perPageText1" runat="server" /> <asp:DropDownList ID="ddlItemsPerPage" runat="server" AutoPostBack="true" OnSelectedIndexChanged="ddlItemsPerPage_SelectedIndexChanged" /> <asp:Literal ID="perPageText2" runat="server" /> </td> </tr> </table> As you can see, the 2 buttons are wired to click events, which are defined correctly in the code-behind. Now, here is how I include an instance of the control on my page: <uc:Pager ID="Pager1" runat="server" TotalRecords="100" DisplayItemsPerPage="true" ItemsPerPageChoices="10,25,50,100" ItemsPerPageFormatString="Sessions/Page: {0}" PageSize="25" OnPageChanged="PageChanged" OnPageSizeChanged="PageChanged" /> I noticed though, that the 2 buttons in my user control weren't causing a post back when clicked. The drop down list does cause postback, though. Here is the rendered HTML: <table style="width: 100%;"> <tr> <td id="ctl00_MainContent_Pager1_PageControls" align="left"> <!-- No onclick event! Why? --> <input type="submit" name="ctl00$MainContent$Pager1$btnPrevPage" value="?" id="ctl00_MainContent_Pager1_btnPrevPage" /> Page <select name="ctl00$MainContent$Pager1$ddlPage" onchange="javascript:setTimeout('__doPostBack(\'ctl00$MainContent$Pager1$ddlPage\',\'\')', 0)" id="ctl00_MainContent_Pager1_ddlPage"> <option value="1">1</option> <option selected="selected" value="2">2</option> <option value="3">3</option> <option value="4">4</option> <option value="5">5</option> <option value="6">6</option> </select> of <span id="ctl00_MainContent_Pager1_lblTotalPages">6</span> <!-- No onclick event! Why? --> <input type="submit" name="ctl00$MainContent$Pager1$btnNextPage" value="?" id="ctl00_MainContent_Pager1_btnNextPage" /> </td> <td id="ctl00_MainContent_Pager1_itemsPerPageControls" align="right"> Sessions/Page: <select name="ctl00$MainContent$Pager1$ddlItemsPerPage" onchange="javascript:setTimeout('__doPostBack(\'ctl00$MainContent$Pager1$ddlItemsPerPage\',\'\')', 0)" id="ctl00_MainContent_Pager1_ddlItemsPerPage"> <option value="10">10</option> <option selected="selected" value="25">25</option> <option value="50">50</option> <option value="100">100</option> </select> </td> </tr> </table> And, as you can see, there is no onclick attribute being rendered in the button's input elements. Why not?
