• Build automation: Is it usual to use QMake for non-Qt projects?

  So, I'm planning to write a C++ library and I want it to be cross-platform, and as this library won't deal with UI and I want it to have as little dependencies as possible, I won't be using Qt (actually Qt won't really help me to achieve what I want, all I plan on using is STL and Boost). Now when it comes to build a cross-platform project, I really like QMake as it's extremely easy to use and I have experience with it. I also heard good things about CMake, though I really doubt it's as easy to use as QMake. Anyway, here is my question: Should I stick with build automation tool that I know or is QMake just out of context for a non-Qt project? Should I take this as an opportunity to learn CMake? Or is there a better alternative to these two?

What i see is already there MPI/ Bit torrent/Jabber protocols / APIs / servers for messaging LAN / wire and other infrastractural cabels for connecting Boost and analogs on evry OS in most languages for multithreading there are lots of CUDA like on computer frameworks for fast calculating on computers GPUs What I personally do not see out there is a crossplatform framework for multiple processes interaction. Meaning one that would allow easy creation of multyple processes running in paralell inside one hoster app on one machine. In level not harder than needed for threads creation (so no seprate server apps - just one lib doing it all) Is there ny such lib and what can you propose for research topic?

• GRUB's menu.lst deleted after a kernel update

  I have installed ubuntu through wubi and all was well until I updated to the next kernel version. I am now trying to boot into ubuntu and it shows me the GRUB rescue command line. I am able to boost windows and the problem seems to be related to the fact that I have no menu.lst on ubuntu\disks\boot\grub and also it might be related to the fact that wubi wasn't installed to the drive where windows is installed but I am not sure. How do I recover menu.lst? Does the problem lay somewhere else? Is there a way to read the data with a windows tool to just recover my data?

  So, I'm looking ordering myself a new development desktop soon and setting up a PROPER office environment by the end of this year. To boost productivity, I'm going to purchase three new monitors. I find that two just isn't enough when I'm debugging or doing something intensive. That said, I had something pointed out to me the other day that I never really noticed nor cared about before - is the difference between a 16:10 and a 16:9 monitor noticeable when programming? Do you really miss those few extra lines, or is it something that you don't notice at all. I notice HP only seems to sell 16:9 monitors (as far as I have found). Is this becoming something of a new standard with the recent growth and cleaver marketing of of "HD 16:9"? To summarize: Has anybody made the switch from 16:10 to 16:9 (or vise-versa) and actually noticed the difference while programming?

  I'm not sure if it is a right place to ask about it but I think it is worth to try. I am PHP programer with near 5 years professional experience. I passed Zend certificates (PHP4, PHP5, ZF), I know almost everything what I should know. And the problem is, that I am bored. I think that I should change technology. It will give me a boost. It will give me satisfaction from work again. But I'm not sure what to choose. Java, .Net, C++ or maybe something other? I am really open to any technology. Have you ever had similar problem? And what would be the recurring work load (if any) that those back links would need? Are there any good industry specific websites we could submit a profile to?   If any1 can help would be much appreciated.. I recently build my own PC would like to use for gaming etc.. (With Ubuntu of course as my OS) Installed Ubuntu via Flash Drive Everything is connected. Purchased a Graphic card/GPU GPU info;(XFX Double D R9 270 925MHz Boost 2GB DDR5 DP HDMI 2XDVI Graphic card) Now my problem is when i put the CD to install the GPU Drivers it would not recognize the HDD So why is the hard drive not being recognized HDD info;(ADATA USA Premier pro SP600 32GB SATA) I am able to enter the BIOS menu (If that helps) Any help would be much appreciated & Thanks in advanced

  When I write code in Visual Studio, ReSharper (God bless it!) often suggests me to change my old-school for loop in the more compact foreach form. And often, when I accept this change, ReSharper goes a step forward, and suggests me to change it again, in a shiny LINQ form. So, I wonder: are there some real advantages, in these improvements? In pretty simple code execution, I cannot see any speed boost (obviously), but I can see the code becoming less and less readable... So I wonder: is it worth it?

• EF 4, POCO and AddOrUpdate

  I'm trying to create a method on an EF 4 POCO repository called AddOrUpdate. The idea is that the business layer can pass in a POCO object and the persistence framework will add the object if it is new (not yet in the database), else will update the database (once SaveChanges() is called) with the new value. This is similar to some other questions I have asked about EF, but I'm only about 80% there in understanding this so please forgive partial duplication. The part I'm missing is how to update the object graph in my ObjectContext/associated ObjectSet for the passed-in business object once I have determined that the business object indeed already exists in the database (and now has been loaded thanks to TryGetObjectByKey). ApplyCurrentValues sounds sort of like what I want, but it only copies scalar values and doesn't seem intended to update the object graph in the ObjectContext/ObjectSet. • Determining the maximum stack depth

  Imagine I have a stack-based toy language that comes with the operations Push, Pop, Jump and If. I have a program and its input is the toy language. For instance I get the sequence Push 1 Push 1 Pop Pop In that case the maximum stack would be 2. A more complicated example would use branches. Push 1 Push true If .success Pop Jump .continue .success: Push 1 Push 1 Pop Pop Pop .continue: In this case the maximum stack would be 3. However it is not possible to get the maximum stack by walking top to bottom as shown in this case since it would result in a stack-underflow error actually. CFGs to the rescue you can build a graph and walk every possible path of the basic blocks you have. However since the number of paths can grow quickly for n vertices you get (n-1)! possible paths. My current approach is to simplify the graph as much as possible and to have less possible paths. This works but I would consider it ugly. Is there a better (read: faster) way to attack this problem? I am fine if the algorithm produces a stack depth that is not optimal. If the correct stack size is m then my only constraint is that the result n is n = m. Is there maybe a greedy algorithm available that would produce a good result here?

• "Pretty" Continuous Integration for Python

  This is a slightly.. vain question, but BuildBot's output isn't particularly nice to look at.. For example, compared to.. phpUnderControl Hudson CruiseControl.rb ..and others, BuildBot looks rather.. archaic I'm currently playing with Hudson, but it is very Java-centric (although with this guide, I found it easier to setup than BuildBot, and produced more info) Basically: is there any Continuous Integration systems aimed at python, that produce lots of shiney graphs and the likes? Update: After trying a few alternatives, I think I'll stick with Hudson. Integrity was nice and simple, but quite limited. I think Buildbot is better suited to having numerous build-slaves, rather than everything running on a single machine like I was using it. Setting Hudson up for a Python project was pretty simple: Download Hudson from https://hudson.dev.java.net/ Run it with java -jar hudson.war Open the web interface on the default address of http://localhost:8080 Go to Manage Hudson, Plugins, click "Update" or similar Install the Git plugin (I had to set the git path in the Hudson global preferences) Create a new project, enter the repository, SCM polling intervals and so on Install nosetests via easy_install if it's not already In the a build step, add nosetests --with-xunit --verbose Check "Publish JUnit test result report" and set "Test report XMLs" to **/nosetests.xml That's all that's required. You can setup email notifications, and the plugins are worth a look. A few I'm currently using for Python projects: SLOCCount plugin to count lines of code (and graph it!) - you need to install sloccount separately Violations to parse the PyLint output (you can setup warning thresholds, graph the number of violations over each build) Cobertura can parse the coverage.py output. Nosetest can gather coverage while running your tests, using nosetests --with-coverage (this writes the output to **/coverage.xml)
