  On my Linux Ubuntu Karmic machine, when I try to net conf list I get: [2010/03/14 21:25:18, 0] registry/reg_init_basic.c:32(registry_init_common) Failed to initialize the registry: WERR_ACCESS_DENIED I think I may have busted my networking configuration good this time... I can't get Nautilus "networking" functions to work i.e. the "Places - Network" won't show my Windows workgroup anymore... Please help! note1: I have verified my SAMBA configuration and it isn't the problem. note2: I have uninstalled Winbind, Dnsmasq and Squid to get my configuration as simple as possible to debug.

• How to prevent partial crash during VLAN configuration on a HP ProCurve 3500

  as you can see from my question, I have a VLAN configuration problem with a ProCurve3500. The goal is to remove a VLAN from the existing configuration, however when I use the WEB UI to do this, I cannot modify ports to be assigned to a different VLAN or the Default VLAN. I always get the message "config failed", which is not very helpful. When I try to do it over telnet, the router somehow partially crashes and somehow the utilization on all ports is at 100% and I can barely use the web ui. After a reboot everything is fine again, but the configuration was not changed... The traffic after this partial crash looks like a broadcast storm, however there are definitely no loops in the segment. I also updated to the latest stable firmware, but the problem persists. When I run the kickstart I keep getting all these errors that have to do with python files for configuring partitions. The only actual maybe useful piece of information is KeyError /dev/sda/ I tried a number of alterations of this configuration but nothing really worked. Any ideas?

• Creating metadata value relationships

  I was recently asked an question about an interesting use case. They wanted content to be submitted into UCM with a particular ID in a custom metadata field. But they wanted that ID to be translated during submission into an employee name in another metadata field upon submission. My initial thought was that this could be done with a dependent choice list (DCL). One option list field driving the choices in another. But this didn't work in this case for a couple of reasons. First, the number of IDs could potentially be very large. So making that into a drop-down list would not be practical. The preference would be for that field to simply be a text field to type in the ID. Secondly, data could be submitted through different methods other then the web-based check-in form. And without an interface to select the DCL choices, the system needed a way to determine and populate the name field. So instead I went the approach of having the value of the ID field drive the value of the Name field using the derived field approach in my rule. In looking at it though, it was easy to simply copy the value of the ID field into the Name field...but to have it look up and translate the value proved to be the tricky part. So here is the approach I took... First I created my two metadata fields as standard text fields in the Configuration Manager applet. Next I create a table that stores the relationship between the IDs and Names. I then create a View into that table and set the column to the EmployeeID. I now create a new Application Field and set it as an option list using the View I created in the previous step. The reason I create it as an Application field is because I don't need to display the field or store a value in it. I simply need to make use of the option list in the next step... Finally, I create a Rule in which I select the Employee Name field and turn on the 'Is derived field' checkbox. I edit the derived value and add a new condition. Because the option list is a Application field and not an Information field, I can't use the Compute button. Instead, I insert this line directly in the Value field: @getFieldViewValue("EmployeeMapping",#active.xEmployeeID, "EmployeeName") The "EmployeeMapping" parameter designates that the value should be pulled from the EmployeeMapping Application field that I had created in the previous step. The #active.xEmployeeID field is the ID value that should be pulled from what the user entered. "EmployeeName" is the column name in the table which has the value which corresponds to the ID. The extracted name then becomes the value within our Employee Name field. That's it. You can then add additional Rules to make the Name field read-only/hidden on the check-in page and such.

• Filtering option list values based on security in UCM

  Fellow UCM blog writer John Sim recently posted a comment asking about filtering values based on the user's security. I had never dug into that detail before, but thought I would take a look. It ended up being tricker then I originally thought and required a bit of insider knowledge, so I thought I would share. The first step is to create the option list table in Configuration Manager. You want to define the column for the option list value and any other columns desired. You then want to have a column which will store the security attribute to apply to the option list value. In this example, we'll name the column 'dGroupName'. Next step is to create a View based on the new table. For the Internal and Visible column, you can select the option list column name. Then click on the Security tab, uncheck the 'Publish view data' checkbox and select the 'Use standard document security' radio button. Click on the 'Edit Values...' button and add the values for the option list. In the dGroupName field, enter the Security Group (or Account if you use Accounts for security) to apply to that value. Create the custom metadata field and apply the View just created. The next step requires file system access to the server. Open the file [ucm directory]\data\schema\views\[view name].hda in a text editor. Below the line '@Properties LocalData', add the line: schSecurityImplementorColumnMap=dGroupName:dSecurityGroup The 'dGroupName' value designates the column in the table which stores the security value. 'dSecurityGroup' indicates the type of security to check against. It would be 'dDocAccount' if using Accounts. Save the file and restart UCM. Now when a user goes to the check-in page, they will only see the options for which they have read and write privileges to the associated Security Group. And on the Search page, they will see the options for which they have just read access. One thing to note is if a value that a user normally can't view on Check-in or Search is applied to a document, but the document is viewable by the user, the user will be able to see the value on the Content Information screen.

The server-side experiences, the user-side experiences, feature set, TCO, support options etc. And if there were other solutions (like MDaemon 11 + Exchange or anything else) what would you suggest ?

  I have 31 documents I need to merge into one, using Word 2007 on Windows 7. I read that you can go to Insert - Object - Text from file and select the documents you need. I did that and it worked fine. The thing is, each document is right against the last one. Is there any way to make it so each document starts on a new page, other than manually inserting page breaks? • Running Excel 2007 as admin on Win7 causes “There was a problem sending the command to the program”

  I am running Excel 2007 on Windows 7 64bit. I need to run Excel as administrator so I have the "Run as Administrator" box in the Excel shortcut checked. Now, when I try to open an Excel file by double clicking, I get the following error: There was a problem sending the command to the program Excel opens fine after that, and I can open the file fine through Excel's File/Open menu. Why can't I open the file by double clicking? Some sites suggest changing a specific Excel option. I tried while checking/unchecking Excel's "Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)" but that didn't help. The issue goes away if I uncheck "Run as Administrator" but I want to be able to leave that checked. Any ideas?

  In June Mikhail asked the same question but the answer was how to do the opposite (make multiple instances the default). I am trying to get to an answer to Mikhail's question which I rephrase as :- I have same problem with 64 byte Windows 7 and Excel 2007. Excel always used to open in a single instance n o matter how/where I opened the sheets. Because of this I could always copy and paste, etc with full formatting, formulas, etc. Suddenly, Excel switched to opening everything in fresh, separate, multiple instances and destroyed the basic cut and paste options. Wasn't the original question how to go back to everything in a single instance ? I have been searching for the answer to that question (rather than the opposite) Richard

• Can I use netgroup at an NIS Client (Redhat) to restrict access to it?

  Our company has a central NIS configuration that we are using to access our teams servers (Redhat)... The current configuration allows all valid NIS authenticated users to connect to our servers. We cannot update or change something on the NIS Master Server... so... Is there a way to use netgroups or some other configuration to allow our team members to authenticate using the NIS server but still restrict access to all other users? Thanks!

• SharePoint 2007: Moving main site, to be a subsite - How can urls be redirected/changed?

  The setup: SharePoint 2007 (MOSS Enterprise) on WINSVR03/IIS6 One site collection, with one access mapping (http://mainsite) currently I'm moving the main SharePoint site, in our one site collection, to be a subsite in a new site collection. I'm using SharePoint Content Deployment Wizard to complete this task (http://spdeploymentwizard.codeplex.com/). The Question So the main site http://mainsite being moved has many subsites, etc. I want to be sure that urls like this: http://mainsite/subsite/doclib/doc1.docx map to and redirect to the new url: http://newsite/mainsite/subsite/doclib/doc1.docx ? And furthermore: I'm aware of this - http://rdacollaboration.codeplex.com/releases/view/28073 , however is it IIS7 only? That'd wouldn't work for me. Looking at this question - http://serverfault.com/questions/107537/dealing-with-moved-documents-and-sites-in-sharepoint is the only one I see that is similar. Would an IIS redirect of http://mainsite to http://newsite/mainsite work only for the root url?

So, we've bulk edited all the AD records so that the 'mail' attribute is populated with the right e-mail address in the right format. Now, how do we enable these contacts within Exchange 2007? I've looked through http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb684891.aspx but that only seems to talk about manually editing the CSV output to specify the external addresses. AD already knows the external e-mail addresses - I just need the info in Exchange! Any thoughts?

  We are a smallish educational network (about 70 clients) with a single server running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise, functioning as both domain controller and file server. The educational pricing for Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010 is irresistible as a managed anti-malware solution, but it requires System Center Configuration Manager 2007. I know best practice is not to run System Center Configuration Manager on a domain controller, but it's the only server I have to work with. Will installing SCCM on a domain controller cause problems? What conflicts might I need to take into account when planning deployment?

• Minidlna Directory Issues

  I've done my searching and can't find an answer to THIS specific issue. I have my minidlna set up and running - but it's not really done properly. First off, when I open the server on my bluray player, all of my movies are listed twice - when they are certainly not saved on my external twice. Second, when I open the server - rather than reading "Movies" "TV" "Music", etc - It just mashes all of my movies, tv, and some other folders all together with no real organization. I never had this problem when I had my Windows set up, so I know it's something configured improperly more-so than my external drive giving me gruff. After poking and prodding for a while I can't find any obvious way, or documentation telling me how, to set up the 2 ethernet ports in a failover or load-balancing configuration. There seems to be an obvious way to do link aggregation, but not failover or load-balancing? What's the default configuration if I enable both ports with the same (manually configured) IP address?

I was not able to find a standalone installer for that, so I am having to install SQL Server 2005 Client Components. This approach is not ideal as we don't want to have SSMS on an public-facing production server. • Apache Simple Configuration Issue: Setting up per-user directory permission denied problem

  Hello. I am just getting Apache 2.2 running on Fedora 13 Beta 64-bit. I am running into issues setting my per-user directory. The goal is to make localhost/~user map to /home/~user/public_html. I think that I have the permissions right because I have 755 to /home/~user, and I have 755 to /home/~user/public_html/ and I have 777 for all contents inside of /home/~user/public_html/ recursively set. So, first off, you said that you assume that I have the userdir module enabled, but I am not sure what that means exactly. That could be part of the problem. I do have the Module loaded, using the LoadModule directive. I have this: LoadModule userdir_module modules/mod_userdir.so I also did a find on where mod_userdir is, and I found it located here: [huckphin@crhyner-workbox]/% find / . -name '*mod_userdir.so*' 2> /dev/null /usr/lib64/lighttpd/mod_userdir.so /usr/lib64/httpd/modules/mod_userdir.so Is there something else I need to enable? • getting Internet connection sharing working in a slightly more complicated configuration

  I have the following configuration: Computer A - Mac OSX 10.8.4, wireless & wired adapters Computer B - Windows 7 (64 bit), wireless & wired adapters, has internet connection via the wired adapter (ethernet) d-link wired/wireless router. Problem to solve: Connect from computer A to the internet through the wired connection of computer B. I tried the following: I set up a local network between A and B using the d-link router. The configuration is this: D-link router - 192.168.0.1 A - wired connection to the d-link router, static 192.168.0.101 (I could have used the wireless but I preferred the wired connection) B - wireless connection to the d-link router DHCP 192.168.0.102 (but I made sure it always gets the same address) B - wired connection to the internet using some address that begins with 10.x.y.z. In this configuration A can see B. I enabled ICS on the wired adapter of B. I set up the Gateway of A to point to B and DNS servers to point to the DNS servers specified for the 10.x.y.z address. It doesn't work, A goes only as far as B. It can ping the 10.x.y.z address of B though. I then found this article: http://terrybritton.com/windows-internet-connection-sharing-ics-not-working-with-linux-bridging-is-the-solution-916/. Terry is suggesting that a bridge should be defined on B between the two connections. I tried that but basically computer B is screwed as soon as I create the bridge. It can't connect to the internet anymore. It is as if the network bridge seems to think the traffic to the internet should go from the wired connection to the wireless and not the other way around. The other thing that puzzles me is the router itself. In general the router needs an internet address. In a normal configuration it is the router that gets the ip address and the internet traffic goes through the router. In my case I am not interested in that. So, any suggestions to get this working? I wouldn't shy away from using a commercial software but I would think windows 7 should allow me to do it. Thanks

For this I have enabled following policies in User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Network\Network connections Enable Windows 2000 network connection settings for administrators Prohibit access to properties of a LAN connection Prohibit access to properties of components a LAN connection Users (that exist in administrators) still can change the LAN properties. Are there any other solutions?
