  • Can I use one virtualbox disk for multiple machines?

    I'm not sure what search term to use and skimming through the VirtualBox manual didn't help me either, so I ask my two questions here... My setup is this: PC with dual boot into Windows 7 and a Debian operating system (both 64bit). I've created a virtual machine (Kubuntu, 64bit) under Windows and put it's VDI file on a SMB share of my NAS. Then I created a VM under linux using the same settings for memory etc and assigned the existing VDI file to it. My idea was that I could use that virtual machine from Windows and Linux as well. (1) Is this generally something that should work without problems? I noticed that snapshots get me into trouble because they appear to be not visible from the other operating system: The snapshots I took after installing the guest system are not visible under Linux. That's why I shut down the VM after usage and not save its state while it's running. My current problem is this: I have used the VM under Windows first, then under Linux. Now it will only start on Linux. When trying this on Windows the guest OS detects some kind of hard disk error and fails to boot because it cannot mount its drive. Obviously the virtual hard disk won't fail so it must have something to do with me using it under Linux. (2) How can I fix that? Update: It also looks like any changes I made in the VM under Linux have been reset by trying to boot it under Windows. Looks like it's back to the latest snapshot. I'm confused... Update The answer to my first question can be found below. In short: It works, as long as you don't use snapshots. The answer to my second question is this: Under Windows set the VM back to the latest snapshot and then discard the snapshot so it gets merged. There should be no snapshots left at the end. If you have multiple snapshots, discard the earliest ones first (Snapshot 1, then 2, 3, ...). I'm not sure what happens if you start at the end (.., 3, 2, 1). This of course leads to some data loss since you revert all changes since the last snapshot. But at least the VM is usable again.

    I recently reinstalled windows xp on my dell latitude d410 laptop, everything works fine as long as I don't shut down, when I do, I get a black screen with a list of choices, it gives me the option of trying to start windows normally or different safe modes, than a blue screen comes up and runs a check disk, it even ask me to pick a restore point the last time, which I did, I'm afraid to turn the computer off or restart it, what could be wrong?

  • Exchange 2003 mail non-delivery (NDR), spam activity? events 7002 & 7004

    Windows Server 2003 Small Business Server SP2 Exchange Version 6.5 (Build 7638.2: Service Pack 2) This network has been neglected and has been having email problems for years and was on many blacklists. I was called in after the server eventually crashed... I got the server back up and running, but email problems persist. Outgoing mail delivery is sporadic. Sometimes the mail goes through, sometimes a delayed delivery report is generated after a day or more, and sometimes it seems to go through, but the recipient never receives it. Not sure if spammers are successfully using the server as a relay (see event entries below after turning on maximum SMTP logging)... User PCs infected with viruses and server was blacklisted on many sites (I used mxtoolbox.com) I have cleaned all the PCs and changed all passwords (including administrator) I have requested removal from all of the blacklists - most have removed the listing, some take more time. I have setup rDNS pointer records with the ISP (Comcast) - that was one reason for some of the blacklistings. I have tested that it's not an open relay using telnet as described here: www.amset.info/exchange/smtp-openrelay.asp I followed the advise of a Spamhaus & Microsoft article to enable maximum SMTP logging. http://www.spamhaus.org/faq/answers.lasso?section=isp%20spam%20issues#320 which directed me to Microsoft KB article 895853, specifically, the part 2/3 down titled: "If mail relay occurs from an account on an Exchange computer that is not configured as an open relay" . The Application Event Log is filling with this type of activity (Event ID 7002, 7002 & 3018 errors): Event Type: Error Event Source: MSExchangeTransport Event Category: SMTP Protocol Event ID: 7004 Date: 1/18/2011 Time: 7:33:29 AM User: N/A Computer: SERVER Description: This is an SMTP protocol error log for virtual server ID 1, connection #621.   • TrueCrypt partition will no longer mount

    I am hoping for some advice to help me out of my situation, with luck. I have a computer running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 with 3 hard disks installed. On my 2TB hard disk 2 (non-system disk) I have 4 partitions. One is for music, another for video, a downloads partition and a 500GB RAW Truecrypt encrypted partition / volume that I had setup to mount with 4 photographs used as keyfiles. The 4 photographs are located in my 'Documents' partition which is one of four partitions on my 1.5TB hard disk 1 (non-system disk) When I setup the disk encryption I did not (I'm 99% sure) create a password, I only used the 4 photograph keyfiles to mount the volume. Recently my 1TB hard disk 0 (system / boot) started to fail so I decided to replace it. I was going to clone the old disk to a new disk but decided that a fresh installation would be more beneficial. Once I had transferred all the required 'User Data' from my old hard disk 0 (C: disk) I discarded it. I reinstalled Truecrypt, pointed to the partition, selected my 4 keyfiles photographs and I mounted my encrypted volume with no issues. In fact I mounted it several times after re-installing Windows and after reboots. Now all of a sudden when I try and mount it I get the message "incorrect keyfile(s) and/or password or not a Truecrypt volume". Now I am not sure why this happened as I do not recall exactly what I did between last mounting the volume successfully and it not mounting. Here are some of the possible things I may have done to cause it to stop working but I am at a loss as to where to start to try and resolve the problem. 1. I had swapped the drive letters to a preferred order. 2. I possibly swapped the physical SATA connectors on the mainboard. 3. I enabled 'Hot Plugging' for the two non-system hard disk SATA ports and the DVD SATA port in the BIOS. I have tried changing the encrypted partition drive letter as suggested in another post but this does not help. On my old system the encrypted drive was drive "X". I have about tried it with all the other free drive letters but alas nothing changes. I do not recall what drive letter was allocated to the encrypted partition before I changed them all. I have not tried to change the letter back to what it possibly was to start with as I am happy with the current layout. I will try this is anyone thinks it would be worthwhile though. I do hope I have managed to convey my situation in an understandable manner and live in hope someone could help me recover years of personal files.   • VM Virtual guest machine disk defrag improves performance, myth or reality?

    In operation of a virtual Vmware or Hyper-V guest typically advice is given to defrag the host and virtual disk images so to result in improved performance. Something like a cmd: vmware-vdiskmanager -d <file.vmdk> works great. Yet I can't find any qualitive evidence that suggest defraging inside the guest VM improves performance. Does anyone have advice or evidence that doesn't come from a commercial defragger's whitepaper that suggests inside guest defragging helps?

    Hello, I have a view as a main screen of the application which contains the available application's actions as icon+text pairs ( desktop like). I want to find out programatically what are the activities defined ONLY in my AndroidManifest.xml Suppose I have : < activity android:name="example.mainActivity" android:label="mainActivity" < intent-filter < action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" / < category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" / < /intent-filter < /activity < activity android:name="example.activity1" android:label="Activity1" < intent-filter < action android:name="android.intent.action.VIEW" / < category android:name="example.custom.ACTIVITY" / < /intent-filter < /activity < activity android:name="example.activity2" android:label="Activity2" < intent-filter < action android:name="android.intent.action.VIEW" / < category android:name="example.custom.ACTIVITY" / < /intent-filter < /activity I want that in the mainActivity to dinamically read Activity1 and Activity2 because when i add Activity3 for example it will be automatically read. I thought that this could be done by defining a custom category, example.custom.ACTIVITY, and in the mainActivity use the packageManager.queryIntentActivities(Intent intent, int flags) but it doesn't seem to be working. I really would like to code it to dinamically discover the installed activities in my application. Do you have any ideas on how to do this? Thank you

  • Why doesn't my android application show up in the launcher?

    I'm developing an application for the Android platform targeted for api level 4 (Android 1.6) but I can't get it to show up on my phone and I can't figure out why.   • Why is Core Data not persisting these changes to disk?

    I added a new entity to my model and it loads fine but no changes made in memory get persisted to disk. My values set on the car object work fine in memory but aren't getting persisted to disk on hitting the home button (in simulator). I am using almost exactly the same code on another entity in my application and its values persist to disk fine (core data - sqlite3); Does anyone have a clue what I'm overlooking here? Car is the managed object, cars in an NSMutableArray of car objects and Car is the entity and Visible is the attribute on the entity which I am trying to set. Thanks for you assistance.   • Updating database row from model

    Hey everyone, I'm haing a few problems updating a row in my database using Linq2Sql. Inside of my model I have two methods for updating and saving from my controller, which in turn receives an updated model from my view. My model methods like like: public void Update(Activity activity) { _db.Activities.InsertOnSubmit(activity); } public void Save() { _db.SubmitChanges(); } and the code in my Controller likes like: [HttpPost] public ActionResult Edit(Activity activity) { if (ModelState.IsValid) { UpdateModel<Activity>(activity); _activitiesModel.Update(activity); _activitiesModel.Save(); } return View(activity); } The problem I'm having is that this code inserts a new entry into the database, even though the model item i'm inserting-on-submit contains a primary key field. I've also tried re-attaching the model object back to the data source but this throws an error because the item already exists. Any pointers in the right direction will be greatly appreciated.   • How to R/W hard disk when CPU is in Protect Mode?

    I am doing some OS experiment. Until now, all my code utilized the real mode BIOS interrupt to manipulate hard disk and floppy. But once my code enabled the Protect Mode of the CPU, all the real mode BIOS interrupt service routine won't be available. How could I R/W the hard disk and floppy? I have a feeling that I need to do some hardware drivers now. Am I right? Is this why an OS is so difficult to develop? I know that hardwares are all controlled by reading from and writing to certain control or data registers. For example, I know that the Command Block Registers of hard disk range from 0x1F0 to 0x1F7. But I am wondering whether the register addresses of so many different hardwares are the same on the PC platform? Or do I have to detect that before using them? How to detect them?? For any responses I present my deep appreciation.

  • Integrating Code Metrics in TFS 2010 Build

Yesterday Microsoft finally releases a Visual Studio Code Metrics Power Tool 10.0, a command line tool that lets you run code metrics on your applications.  This means that it is now possible to perform code metrics analysis on the build server as part of your nightly/QA builds (for example). In this post I will show how you can run the metrics command line tool, and also a custom activity that reads the output and appends the results to the build log, and also fails he build if the metric values exceeds certain (configurable) treshold values. The code metrics tool analyzes all the methods in the assemblies, measuring cyclomatic complexity, class coupling, depth of inheritance and lines of code. Then it calculates a Maintainability Index from these values that is a measure f how maintanable this method is, between 0 (worst) and 100 (best). For information on hwo this value is calculated, see http://blogs.msdn.com/b/codeanalysis/archive/2007/11/20/maintainability-index-range-and-meaning.aspx. After this it aggregates the information and present it at the class, namespace and module level as well. Running Metrics.exe in a build definition Running the actual tool is easy, just use a InvokeProcess activity last in the Compile the Project sequence, reference the metrics.exe file and pass the correct arguments and you will end up with a result XML file in the drop directory. Here is how it is done in the attached build process template: In the above sequence I first assign the path to the code metrics result file ([BinariesDirectory]\result.xml) to a variable called MetricsResultFile, which is then sent to the InvokeProcess activity in the Arguments property. Here are the arguments for the InvokeProcess activity: Note that we tell metrics.exe to analyze all assemblies located in the Binaries folder. You might want to do some more intelligent filtering here, you probably don’t want to analyze all 3rd party assemblies for example. Note also the path to the metrics.exe, this is the default location when you install the Code Metrics power tool. You must of course install the power tool on all build servers. Using the standard output logging (in the Handle Standard Output/Handle Error Output sections), we get the following output when running the build: Integrating Code Metrics into the build Having the results available next to the build result is nice, but we want to have results integrated in the build result itself, and also to affect the outcome of the build. The point of having QA builds that measure, for example, code metrics is to make it very clear how the code being built measures up to the standards of the project/company. Just having a XML file available in the drop location will not cause the developers to improve their code, but a (partially) failing build will! To do this, we need to write a custom activity that parses the metrics result file, logs it to the build log and fails the build if the values frfom the metrics is below/above some predefined treshold values. The custom activity performs the following steps Parses the XML. I’m using Linq 2 XSD for this, since the XML schema for the result file is available, it is vey easy to generate code that lets you query the structure using standard Linq operators. Runs through the metric result hierarchy and logs the metrics for each level and also verifies maintainability index and the cyclomatic complexity with the treshold values. The treshold values are defined in the build process template are are sent in as arguments to the custom activity If the treshold values are exceeded, the activity either fails or partially fails the current build. For more information about the structure of the code metrics result file, read Cameron Skinner's post about it. It is very simpe and easy to understand. I won’t go through the code of the custom activity here, since there is nothing special about it and it is available for download so you can look at it and play with it yourself. The treshold values for Maintainability Index and Cyclomatic Complexity is defined in the build process template, and can be modified per build definition: I have taken the default value for these settings from my colleague Terje Sandström post on Code Metrics - suggestions for approriate limits. You’ll notice that this is quite an improvement compared to using code metrics inside the IDE, where Red/Yellow/Green limits are fixed (and the default values are somewaht strange, see Terjes post for a discussion on this) This is the first version of the code metrics integration with TFS 2010 Build, I will proabably enhance the functionality and the logging (the “tree view” structure in the log becomes quite hard to read) soon. I will also consider adding it to the Community TFS Build Extensions site when it becomes a bit more mature. Another obvious improvement is to extend the data warehouse of TFS and push the metric results back to the warehouse and make it visible in the reports.

    Within Eclipse, everything works perfectly when I run 'mvn install android:deploy'...however, this takes about 18 seconds to complete. Is there a faster way to launch my android application.   • Supress the Soft Keboard when an activity loads... yet again

    this.getWindow().setSoftInputMode(WindowManager.LayoutParams.SOFT_INPUT_STATE_ALWAYS_HIDDEN); Same problem that I've read on other posts. I don't want the soft keyboard to pop up when the Activity loads. The above code snippet works, however my View no longer scrolls up so that the User can still see the EditText. It scrolls without this line of code. Any ideas?
