• Converting from Latitude/Longitude to Cartesian Coordinates with a World File and map image.

- by Heath
I have a java applet that allows users to import a jpeg and world file from the local system. The user can then "click" draw lines on the image that was imported. Each endpoint of each line contains a set of X/Y and Lat/Long values. The XY is standard java coordinate space, the applet uses an affine transform calculation with the world file to determine the lat/long for every point on the canvas. I have a requirement that allows a user to type a distance into a text field and use the arrow key to draw a line in a certain direction (Up, Down, Left, Right) from a single selected point on the screen. I know how to determine the lat/long of a point given a source lat/long, distance, and bearing. So a user types "100" in the text field and presses the Right arrow key a line should be drawn 100 feet to the right from the currently selected point. My issue is I don't know how to convert the distance( which is in feet ) into the distance in pixels. This would then tell my where to plot the point.

• Oracle Social Network Developer Challenge Winners

- by kellsey.ruppel

Maybe you recall that Noel (@noelportugal) and I were running a modified hackathon during the show, the Oracle Social Network Developer Challenge. Without further ado, congratulations to Dimitri Gielis (@dgielis) and Martin Giffy D’Souza (@martindsouza) on their winning entry, an integration between Oracle APEX and Oracle Social Network that integrates feedback and bug submission with Oracle Social Network Conversations, allowing developers, end-users and project leaders to view and discuss the feedback on their APEX applications from within Oracle Social Network. Update: Bob Rhubart of OTN (@brhubart) interviewed Dimitri and Martin right after their big win. Money quote from Dimitri when asked what he’d buy with the $500 in Amazon gift cards, “Oracle Social Network.” Nice one. In their own words: In the developers perspective it’s important to get feedback soon, so after a first iteration and end-users start to test, they can give feedback of the application. Previously it stopped there, and it was up to the developer to communicate further with email, phone etc. With OSN every feedback and communication gets logged and other people can see the discussion immediately as well. For the end users perspective he can now communicate in a more efficient way to not only the developers, but also between themselves. Maybe many end-users (in different locations) would like to change some behaviour, by using OSN they can see the entry somebody put in with a screenshot and they can just start to chat about it. Some key technical end users can have lighten the tasks of the development team by looking at the feedback first and start to communicate with their peers. For the project manager he has now the ability to really see what communication has taken place in certain areas and can make decisions on that. Later, if things come up again, he can always go back in OSN and see what was said at that moment in time. Integrating OSN in the APEX applications enhances the user experience, makes the lives of the developers easier and gives a better overview to project managers. Incidentally, you may already know Dimitri and Martin, since both are Oracle Ace Directors. I ran into Martin at the Ace Director briefings Friday before the conference started, and at that point, he wasn’t sure he’d have time to enter the Challenge. After some coaxing, he and Dimitri agreed to give it a go and banged out their entry on Tuesday night, or more accurately, very early Wednesday morning, the day of the Challenge judging. I think they said it took them about four hours of hardcore coding to get it done, very much like a traditional hackathon, which is essentially a code sprint from idea to finished product. Here are some screenshots of the workflow they built. #gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } I love this idea, i.e. closing the loop between web developers and users, a very common pain point, and so did our judges. Speaking of, special thanks to our panel of three judges: Reggie Bradford (@reggiebradford), serial entrepreneur, founder of Vitrue and SVP of Cloud Product Development at Oracle Robert Hipps (@roberthipps), VP of Development for Oracle Social Network and my former boss Roland Smart (@rsmartx), VP of Social Marketing and the brains behind the Oracle Social Developer Community Finally, thanks to everyone who made this possible, including: The three other teams from HarQen (@harqen), TEAM Informatics (@teaminformatics) and Fishbowl Solutions (@fishbowle20) featuring Friend of the ‘Lab John Sim (@jrsim_uix), who finished and presented entries. I’ll be posting the details of their work this week. The one guy who finished an entry, but couldn’t make the judging, Bex Huff (@bex). Bex rallied from a hospitalization due to an allergic reaction during the show; he’s fine, don’t worry. I’ll post details of his work next week, too. The 40-plus people who registered to compete in the Challenge. Noel for all his hard work, sample code, and flying monkey target, more on that to come. The Oracle Social Network development team for supporting this event. Everyone in legal and the beta program office for their help. And finally, the Oracle Technology Network (@oracletechnet) for hosting the event and providing countless hours of operational and moral support. Sorry if I’ve missed some people, since this was a huge team effort. This event was a big success, and we plan to do similar events in the future. Stay tuned to this channel for more.

• UIScrollView works as expected but scrollRectToVisible: does nothing

- by mahboudz
HI. I have used UIScrollView before, and am using it now, and never had a problem. I'm now adding it to an old app, and while it works as expected (I can look at the contents, scroll around with my finger, all the bounds and sizes are setup right so there is no empty space in the content, etc.), I just can't get scrollToRectVisible to work. I have even simplified the call so that it merely moves to the 0,0 position: [scrollView scrollRectToVisible:CGRectMake(0, 0, 10, 10) animated:YES]; or move it to 0,200: [scrollView scrollRectToVisible:CGRectMake(0, 200, 10, 10) animated:YES]; I even made a quick app to test this and I can get scrollRectToVisible to work there as I expect. But in my old app, I can't seem to make it do anything. I can make the scrollView scroll with setContentOffset:, but that's not what I want. This scrollView and its contents are defined in the nib by IB and used with an IBOutlet. The only code I am using in my app to handle the scrollView is [scrollView setContentSize:CGSizeMake(scrollView.contentSize.width, imageView.frame.size.height)]; (I'm only interested in vertical scrolling not horizontal). Has anyone run into a problem like this? I have compared the scrollView attributes in both apps and they are identical. ADDENDUM: My scrollViews frame is: 0.000000 0.000000 480.000000 179.000000 My scrollViews contentSize is: 0.000000 324.000000 It still acts like the rect I want to scroll to is already visible and no scrolling is needed. Not sure if that is what is happening. This is just the darnest thing. Seems like such an easy thing to resolve... ADDENDUM #2: This is how I am making do without scrollRectToVisible: CGPoint point = myRect.origin; if (![clefScrollView pointInside:point withEvent:nil]) { point.x = 0; if (point.y > clefScrollView.contentSize.height - clefScrollView.bounds.size.height) point.y = clefScrollView.contentSize.height - clefScrollView.bounds.size.height; [clefScrollView setContentOffset:point animated: YES]; } Everything else about this scrollView works as expected, but scrollRectToVisible. WHY?!? Any wild guesses?

• Algorithm question.

- by Lukasz Lew
I can't solve it: You are given 8 integers: A, B, C representing a line on a plane with equation A*x + B*y = C a, b, c representing another line x, y representing a point on a plane The two lines are not parallel therefore divide plane into 4 pieces. Point (x, y) lies inside of one these pieces. Problem: Write a fast algorithm that will find a point with integer coordinates in the same piece as (x,y) that is closest to the cross point of the two given lines. Note: This is not a homework, this is old Euler-type task that I have absolutely no idea how to approach.

• Odd values/movement with UITouch and CGPoint.

- by Joshua
I'm getting odd numbers from UITouch and CGPoint and one is different, I also think this maybe causing a flickering affect in my app when I try to move something by following a touch. This is the code I'm using: - (void)touchesBegan:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { NSLog(@"touchDown"); UITouch *touch = [touches anyObject]; firstTouch = [touch locationInView:self.view]; if (CGRectContainsPoint(but.frame, firstTouch)) { butContains = YES; NSLog(@"butContains = %d", butContains); } } - (void)touchesMoved:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { UITouch *touch = [touches anyObject]; currentTouch = [touch locationInView:self.view]; NSInteger x = currentTouch.x; NSInteger y = currentTouch.y; CGFloat CGX = (CGFloat)x; CGFloat CGY = (CGFloat)y; if (butContains == YES) { NSLog(@"touch in subView/contentView"); sub.frame = CGRectMake(CGX, CGY, 130.0, 21.0); } NSLog(@"touch moved"); } - (void)touchesEnded:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { UITouch *touch = [touches anyObject]; currentTouch = [touch locationInView:self.view]; NSLog(@"User tapped at %@", NSStringFromCGPoint(currentTouch)); NSLog(@"Point %a, %a", currentTouch.x, currentTouch.y); NSInteger x = currentTouch.x; NSInteger y = currentTouch.y; NSLog(@"Point %a, %a", y, x); CGFloat CGX = (CGFloat)x; CGFloat CGY = (CGFloat)y; NSLog(@"Point %g, %g", CGX, CGY); if (butContains == YES) { NSLog(@"touch in subView/contentView"); sub.frame = CGRectMake(CGX, CGY, 130.0, 21.0); } butContains = NO; NSLog(@"touch ended"); } - (IBAction)add:(id)sender{ InSightViewController *contentView = [[InSightViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"SubView" bundle:[NSBundle mainBundle]]; [contentView loadView]; [self.view insertSubview:contentView.view atIndex:0]; } This is what I get from the touchesEnded method in the Debugger. 2010-04-20 20:06:13.045 InSight[25042:207] User tapped at {50, 78} 2010-04-20 20:06:13.047 InSight[25042:207] Point 0x1.9p+5, 0x1.38p+6 2010-04-20 20:06:13.048 InSight[25042:207] Point 0x1.900000027p-1037, 0x1.38p+6 2010-04-20 20:06:13.048 InSight[25042:207] Point 50, 78 And this is what's happening in the Simulator. fwdr.org/file:y8bd As this is a complicated problem this is the source code of my XCode Project aswell. http://cl.ly/Qjj

• OpenLayers Projections.

- by Jenny
I can succesfully do: point.transform(new OpenLayers.Projection("EPSG:900913"), new OpenLayers.Projection("EPSG:4326")); To a point that is in the google format (in meters), but when I want to do the reverse: point.transform(new OpenLayers.Projection("EPSG:4326"), new OpenLayers.Projection("EPSG:900913")); to a point that is in 4326 (regular lat/lon format), I am having some issues. Any negative value seems to become NaN (not a number) when I do the transformation. Is there something about the transformation in reverse that I don't understand? Edit: Even worse, when I have no negative values, the coordinates seem off. I am getting the coordinates by drawing a square on the screen, then saving those coordinates to a database and loading them later. I can draw a square near the tip of africa (positive coordinates), and then when it loads it's near the top of africa, in the atlantic ocean. I'm definitely doing something wrong....

• Suggestions based on unknown address in google's geocoder

- by richardverbruggen
When using Googles geocoder service to display a city on a map; filling out a non-existing city results in an error. Is there a way to display some suggestions based on the filled out city? var geocoder = new GClientGeocoder(); function showAddress(address, zoom) { geocoder.getLatLng( address, function(point) { if (!point) { //no point found.... //Suggest some points :) } else { map.setCenter(point, zoom); } } ); } showAddress('Someplace, Nederland', 14);

• Is it possible to calculate distance on GeoDjango in a SELECT statement?

- by alex
I am using MYSQL. I have a table with 1 column, a Point field. I want to SELECT all rows that have a point with a distance less than 50 meters of my given point. Simple enough, right? Below is how it's done in RAW SQL. But of course, I want to use GeoDjango to do this. cursor.execute("SELECT * FROM project_location WHERE\ (GLength(LineStringFromWKB(LineString(asbinary(utm), asbinary(PointFromWKB(point(%s, %s)))))) < 50)\

• Eclipse Helios on OS X Snow Leopard crashes frequently when editing certain PHP files

- by William
I use Eclipse Helios (Eclipse Platform: 3.6.0.I20100608-0911, Eclipse IDE for PHP Developers: 1.3.0.20100617-0520) all the time on OS X (Snow Leopard), and it seems I only run into trouble whenever I'm editing a PHP file that's part of the WordPress blogging framework. When I move my cursor to a variable or function name, that often triggers the beach ball of death. I suspect Eclipse is trying to look up that variable/function and for some reason that causes an endless loop. Sometimes it's not just variables or functions. Just today I was trying to replace all occurrences of a quoted string. Every time I clicked "Replace All", the program would freeze immediately after the string was replaced and the text cursor was moved to the replaced position. I think the moving of the text cursor is important, because I got the same result when I searched for the string (thus moving the cursor), but NOT when I searched for a nonexistent string. I tried disabling everything in my preferences related to marked occurrences, hovering, code assistance, etc. Nothing helps. I use Eclipse for all my projects, and I find that it's only WordPress projects where this happens. Here's my eclipse.ini file: -startup ../../../plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher_1.1.0.v20100507.jar --launcher.library ../../../plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.cocoa.macosx_1.1.0.v20100503 -product org.eclipse.epp.package.php.product --launcher.defaultAction openFile -showsplash org.eclipse.platform --launcher.XXMaxPermSize 512m --launcher.defaultAction openFile -vmargs -Dosgi.requiredJavaVersion=1.5 -XstartOnFirstThread -Dorg.eclipse.swt.internal.carbon.smallFonts -XX:PermSize=128m -XX:MaxPermSize=128m -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=10 -XX:MaxHeapFreeRatio=70 -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:+CMSIncrementalMode -XX:+CMSIncrementalPacing -XX:CompileThreshold=5 -Xms128m -Xmx512m -Xss2m -Xdock:icon=../Resources/Eclipse.icns -XstartOnFirstThread -Dorg.eclipse.swt.internal.carbon.smallFonts -framework ../../../plugins/org.eclipse.osgi.services_3.2.100.v20100503.jar I have 4GB of RAM, so I don't know if the problem is I'm underutilizing my resources. This value will be overwritten using the values from the preferences I did some experimenting with the particular script that's giving me trouble. It's a hybrid of HTML and PHP, so Eclipse has to do both HTML and PHP validation. I wondered if the HTML validation had something to do with it, so I created a new file, copied the contents over, and messed with the doctype element. I found that if I replaced the well-formed XHTML 1.0 Strict doctype element with a generic doctype (as such: ), then I did not crash the program just by moving the cursor around. I set all HTML validation rules to "Ignore", but it still didn't solve my problems. For now, I'm just going to echo the doctype using PHP instead of entering it literally. That seems to prevent crashes. I notice that when I move the cursor around the document, Eclipse displays the "xpath" to my current location at the bottom of the screen. Sometimes there's a delay while it figures out my current path. Perhaps when it's validating against the Strict doctype, it has problems quickly calculating the xpath as I move the cursor around? Maybe it has a stack overflow that causes it to crash.

• Adding simple marker clusterer to google map

- by take2
Hi, I'm having problems with adding marker clusterer functionality to my map. What I want is to use custom icon for my markers and every marker has its own info window which I want to be able to edit. I did accomplish that, but now I have problems adding marker clusterer library functionality. I read something about adding markers to array, but I'm not sure what would it exactly mean. Besides, all of the examples with array I have found, don't have info windows and searching through the code I didn't find appropriate way to add them. Here is my code (mostly from Geocodezip.com):

• Android - How to scan Access Points and select strongest signal?

- by Donal Rafferty
I am currently trying to write a class in Android that will Scan for access points, calculate which access point has the best signal and then connect to that access point. So the application will be able to scan on the move and attach to new access points on the go. I have the scanning and calculation of the best signal working. But when it comes to attaching to the best access point I am having trouble. It appears that enableNetwork(netid, othersTrueFalse) is the only method for attaching to an Access point but this causes problems as from my Scan Results I am not able to get the id of the access point with the strongest signal. This is my code: public void doWifiScan(){ scanTask = new TimerTask() { public void run() { handler.post(new Runnable() { public void run() { sResults = wifiManager.scan(getBaseContext()); if(sResults!=null) Log.d("TIMER", "sResults count" + sResults.size()); ScanResult scan = wifiManager.calculateBestAP(sResults); wifiManager.addNewAccessPoint(scan); } }); }}; t.schedule(scanTask, 3000, 30000); } public ScanResult calculateBestAP(List<ScanResult> sResults){ ScanResult bestSignal = null; for (ScanResult result : sResults) { if (bestSignal == null || WifiManager.compareSignalLevel(bestSignal.level, result.level) < 0) bestSignal = result; } String message = String.format("%s networks found. %s is the strongest. %s is the bsid", sResults.size(), bestSignal.SSID, bestSignal.BSSID); Log.d("sResult", message); return bestSignal; } public void addNewAccessPoint(ScanResult scanResult){ WifiConfiguration wc = new WifiConfiguration(); wc.SSID = '\"' + scanResult.SSID + '\"'; //wc.preSharedKey = "\"password\""; wc.hiddenSSID = true; wc.status = WifiConfiguration.Status.ENABLED; wc.allowedGroupCiphers.set(WifiConfiguration.GroupCipher.TKIP); wc.allowedGroupCiphers.set(WifiConfiguration.GroupCipher.CCMP); wc.allowedKeyManagement.set(WifiConfiguration.KeyMgmt.WPA_PSK); wc.allowedPairwiseCiphers.set(WifiConfiguration.PairwiseCipher.TKIP); wc.allowedPairwiseCiphers.set(WifiConfiguration.PairwiseCipher.CCMP); wc.allowedProtocols.set(WifiConfiguration.Protocol.RSN); int res = mainWifi.addNetwork(wc); Log.d("WifiPreference", "add Network returned " + res ); boolean b = mainWifi.enableNetwork(res, false); Log.d("WifiPreference", "enableNetwork returned " + b ); } When I try to use addNewAccessPoint(ScanResult scanResult) it just adds another AP to the list in the settings application with the same name as the one with the best signal, so I end up with loads of duplicates and not actually attaching to them. Can anyone point me in the direction of a better solution?

• Take Advantage of Oracle's Ongoing Assurance Effort!

- by eric.maurice
Hi, this is Eric Maurice again! A few years ago, I posted a blog entry, which discussed the psychology of patching. The point of this blog entry was that a natural tendency existed for systems and database administrators to be reluctant to apply patches, even security patches, because of the fear of "breaking" the system. Unfortunately, this belief in the principle "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" creates significant risks for organizations. Running systems without applying the proper security patches can greatly compromise the security posture of the organization because the security controls available in the affected system may be compromised as a result of the existence of the unfixed vulnerabilities. As a result, Oracle continues to strongly recommend that customers apply all security fixes as soon as possible. Most recently, I have had a number of conversations with customers who questioned the need to upgrade their highly stable but otherwise unsupported Oracle systems. These customers wanted to know more about the kind of security risks they were exposed to, by running obsolete versions of Oracle software. As per Oracle Support Policies, Critical Patch Updates are produced for currently supported products. In other words, Critical Patch Updates are not created by Oracle for product versions that are no longer covered under the Premier Support or Extended Support phases of the Lifetime Support Policy. One statement used in each Critical Patch Update Advisory is particularly important: "We recommend that customers upgrade to a supported version of Oracle products in order to obtain patches. Unsupported products, releases and versions are not tested for the presence of vulnerabilities addressed by this Critical Patch Update. However, it is likely that earlier versions of affected releases are also affected by these vulnerabilities." The purpose of this warning is to inform Oracle customers that a number of the vulnerabilities fixed in each Critical Patch Update may affect older versions of a specific product line. In other words, each Critical Patch Update provides a number of fixes for currently supported versions of a given product line (this information is listed for each bug in the Risk Matrices of the Critical Patch Update Advisory), but the unsupported versions in the same product line, while they may be affected by the vulnerabilities, will not receive the fixes, and are therefore vulnerable to attacks. The risk assumed by organizations wishing to remain on unsupported versions is amplified by the behavior of malicious hackers, who typically will attempt to, and sometimes succeed in, reverse-engineering the content of vendors' security fixes. As a result, it is not uncommon for exploits to be published soon after Oracle discloses vulnerabilities with the release of a Critical Patch Update or Security Alert. Let's consider now the nature of the vulnerabilities that may exist in obsolete versions of Oracle software. A number of severe vulnerabilities have been fixed by Oracle over the years. While Oracle does not test unsupported products, releases and versions for the presence of vulnerabilities addressed by each Critical Patch Update, it should be assumed that a number of the vulnerabilities fixed with the Critical Patch Update program do exist in unsupported versions (regardless of the product considered). The most severe vulnerabilities fixed in past Critical Patch Updates may result in full compromise of the targeted systems, down to the OS level, by remote and unauthenticated users (these vulnerabilities receive a CVSS Base Score of 10.0) or almost as critically, may result in the compromise of the affected systems (without compromising the underlying OS) by a remote and unauthenticated users (these vulnerabilities receive a CVSS Base Score of 7.5). Such vulnerabilities may result in complete takeover of the targeted machine (for the CVSS 10.0), or may result in allowing the attacker the ability to create a denial of service against the affected system or even hijacking or stealing all the data hosted by the compromised system (for the CVSS 7.5). The bottom line is that organizations should assume the worst case: that the most critical vulnerabilities are present in their unsupported version; therefore, it is Oracle's recommendation that all organizations move to supported systems and apply security patches in a timely fashion. Organizations that currently run supported versions but may be late in their security patch release level can quickly catch up because most Critical Patch Updates are cumulative. With a few exceptions noted in Oracle's Critical Patch Update Advisory, the application of the most recent Critical Patch Update will bring these products to current security patch level and provide the organization with the best possible security posture for their patch level. Furthermore, organizations are encouraged to upgrade to most recent versions as this will greatly improve their security posture. At Oracle, our security fixing policies state that security fixes are produced for the main code line first, and as a result, our products benefit from the mistakes made in previous version(s). Our ongoing assurance effort ensures that we work diligently to fix the vulnerabilities we find, and aim at constantly improving the security posture our products provide by default. • Draw multiple circles in Google Maps

- by snorpey
Hi. I want to draw multiple circles on a map, using the Google Maps API anj jQuery. The following code works as long as the line with drawMapCircle() is commented out (The markers are positioned correctly). What's wrong with my code? $.getJSON( "ajax/show.php", function(data) { $.each(data.points, function(i, point) { map.addOverlay(new GMarker(new GLatLng(point.lat, point.lng))); drawMapCircle(point.lat, point.lng, 0.01, '#0066ff', 2, 0.8, '#0cf', 0.1); }); } ); function drawMapCircle(lat, lng, radius, strokeColor, strokeWidth, strokeOpacity, fillColor, fillOpacity) { var d2r = Math.PI / 180; var r2d = 180 / Math.PI; var Clat = radius * 0.014483; // statute miles into degrees latitude conversion var Clng = Clat/Math.cos(lat * d2r); var Cpoints = []; for (var i = 0; i < 33; i++) { var theta = Math.PI * (i / 16); Cy = lat + (Clat * Math.sin(theta)); Cx = lng + (Clng * Math.cos(theta)); var P = new GLatLng(Cy, Cx); Cpoints.push(P); } var polygon = new GPolygon(Cpoints, strokeColor, strokeWidth, strokeOpacity, fillColor, fillOpacity); map.addOverlay(polygon); }

• Good hash function for a 2d index

- by rlbond
I have a struct called Point. Point is pretty simple: struct Point { Row row; Column column; // some other code for addition and subtraction of points is there too } Row and Column are basically glorified ints, but I got sick of accidentally transposing the input arguments to functions and gave them each a wrapper class. Right now I use a set of points, but repeated lookups are really slowing things down. I want to switch to an unordered_set. So, I want to have an unordered_set of Points. Typically this set might contain, for example, every point on a 80x24 terminal = 1920 points. I need a good hash function. I just came up with the following: struct PointHash : public std::unary_function<Point, std::size_t> { result_type operator()(const argument_type& val) const { return val.row.value() * 1000 + val.col.value(); } }; However, I'm not sure that this is really a good hash function. I wanted something fast, since I need to do many lookups very quickly. Is there a better hash function I can use, or is this OK?

• millions of 3d points how to 10 closest to origin

- by Kazoom
A point in 3-d is defined by (x,y,z). Distance d between any two points (X,Y,Z) and (x,y,z) is d= Sqrt[(X-x)^2 + (Y-y)^2 + (Z-z)^2]. Now there are a million entries in a file, each entry is some point in space, in no specific order. Given any point (a,b,c) find the nearest 10 points to it. How would you store the million points and how would you retrieve those 10 points from that data structure.

• Advice welcomed on creating my own Swing component

- by Toto
Recently I asked which was the best Swing component to bind to a BigDecimal variable (with some particular editing properties). It turns out that none of the standard Swing components suit me completely, nor did the third-party Swing component libraries I've found out there. So I’ve decided to create my own Swing component. Component description: I want to extend JTextField or JFormattedTextField, so my new component can be easily bound to a BigDecimal variable. The component will have customizable scale and length properties. Behavior: When the component is drawn, it shows only the decimal point and space for scale digits to its right. When the component receives focus the caret should be positioned left to the decimal point. As the user types numbers (any other character is ignored) they appear to the left of the caret, only length – scale numbers are accepted, any other number typed is ignored as the integer portion is full. Any time the user types the decimal point the caret moves to the right side of the decimal point. The following numbers typed are shown in the decimal part, only scale numbers are considered any other number typed is ignored as the decimal portion is full. Additionally, thousand separators should appear as the user types numbers left to the decimal point. Invoking a getValue() method on the component should yield the BigDecimal representing the number just entered. I’ve never created my own Swing component; I’ve barely used the standard ones. So I would appreciate any good tutorial/info/tip on creating the component described. This is the only thing I've got so far. Thanks in advance.

• How do i create a .desktop file for a .jar file?

- by Masterkraft0r
My problem is, that i do want to create a .desktop file for Technic Launcher, which is an alternative launcher for Minecraft. It comes in the form of an .jar file and i want to create a menu entry for it. How would i write such a .desktop file? My attempt was the following: [Desktop Entry] Type=Application Name=Technic Launcher Comment=Minecraft Launcher for Technic Pack, Tekkit, Hack/Mine and Yogbox Exec=/home/benjamin/Applications/Minecraft/TechnicLauchner/technic-launcher-latest.jar Icon=/home/benjamin/Applications/Minecraft/TechnicLauchner/icon.png Terminal=false Categories=Game;ActionGame;AdventureGame;RolePlaying; This didn't work, hence my question. What did i do wrong? Is it even possible to point to a .jar file?

• Missed environment variables in Eclipse Juno

- by hara
I recently moved from Eclipse Indigo to Juno. I installed the IDE in my Ubuntu 12.04 by downloading the archive from here. Then I created an entry in the unity launcher for Juno as I done before for Indigo. Here is what I wrote in ~/.local/share/applications/eclipse-juno.desktop: [Desktop Entry] Type=Application Name=Eclipse Juno Comment=Eclipse Integrated Developmentm Environment Icon=~/.eclipse-juno/icon.xpm Exec=~/.eclipse-juno/eclipse -vmargs -Duser.name="my name" Terminal=false Categories=Development;IDE;Java; When I run eclipse from the unity launcher, eclipse does not see environment variables that I set in ~/.bascrc. Instead, if I run eclipse from shell, it can see all the env variables. How can I fix the problem? Thanks a lot.

• Form submits correctly in Chrome/FF, but fails altogether in IE/Safari

- by culov
I have a form with a css submit button. When a the submit button is clicked, i call a function that executes: document.forms["request"].onsubmit(); What should happen, then, is that the onsubmit method ought to be triggered. This works properly in Chrome/FF, but for some reason IE/Safari will bypass the onsubmit function and simply add the parameter "address=" onto the url as if it were submitting the form and ignoring the onsubmit function. Heres the code for the form:
Enter an intersection or address:

Submit Request    and what follows are some relevant js functions: function addLocation(address) { if (geocoder) { geocoder.getLocations(address, function (point) { if (!point) { alert(address + " not found"); } else { if (point.Placemark[0].address != submittedString) { submittedString = point.Placemark[0].address; addRow(point.Placemark[0].address); req = "addrequest?truck=" + "coolhaus&address=" + point.Placemark[0].address; alert(req); addRequest(req); request.onreadystatechange = function () {} } } }); } } function addRequest(req) { try { request = new XMLHttpRequest(); } catch (e) { try { request = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); } catch (e) { alert("XMLHttpRequest error: " + e); } } request.open("GET", req, true); request.send(null); return request; } You can test the form here: http://la.truxmap.com/request?id=grillmastersla Thanks so much!

• annotation in matlab plot

- by Tim
Hi, I just wonder how to add annotation in matlab plot? Here is my code: plot(x,y); annotation('textarrow',[x, x+0.05],[y,y+0.05],'String','my point','FontSize',14); But the arrow points to the wrong place. How can I fix it? And any better idea for annotating a plot? Thanks and regards! EDIT: I just saw from the help document: annotation('line',x,y) creates a line annotation object that extends from the point defined by x(1),y(1) to the point defined by x(2),y(2), specified in normalized figure units. In my code, I would like the arrow pointing to the point (x,y) that is drawn by plot(), but annotation interprets the values of x and y as in normalized figure units. So I think that is what causes the problem. How can I specify the correct coordinates to annotation?

• nearest neighbor - k-d tree - wikipedia proof.

- by user123930
On the wikipedia entry for k-d trees, an algorithm is presented for doing a nearest neighbor search on a k-d tree. What I don't understand is the explanation of step 3.2. How do you know there isn't a closer point just because the difference between the splitting coordinate of the search point and the current node is greater than the difference between the splitting coordinate of the search point and the current best?

• agent-based simulation: performance issue: Python vs NetLogo & Repast

- by max
I'm replicating a small piece of Sugarscape agent simulation model in Python 3. I found the performance of my code is ~3 times slower than that of NetLogo. Is it likely the problem with my code, or can it be the inherent limitation of Python? Obviously, this is just a fragment of the code, but that's where Python spends two-thirds of the run-time. I hope if I wrote something really inefficient it might show up in this fragment: UP = (0, -1) RIGHT = (1, 0) DOWN = (0, 1) LEFT = (-1, 0) all_directions = [UP, DOWN, RIGHT, LEFT] # point is just a tuple (x, y) def look_around(self): max_sugar_point = self.point max_sugar = self.world.sugar_map[self.point].level min_range = 0 random.shuffle(self.all_directions) for r in range(1, self.vision+1): for d in self.all_directions: p = ((self.point[0] + r * d[0]) % self.world.surface.length, (self.point[1] + r * d[1]) % self.world.surface.height) if self.world.occupied(p): # checks if p is in a lookup table (dict) continue if self.world.sugar_map[p].level > max_sugar: max_sugar = self.world.sugar_map[p].level max_sugar_point = p if max_sugar_point is not self.point: self.move(max_sugar_point) Roughly equivalent code in NetLogo (this fragment does a bit more than the Python function above): ; -- The SugarScape growth and motion procedures. -- to M ; Motion rule (page 25) locals [ps p v d] set ps (patches at-points neighborhood) with [count turtles-here = 0] if (count ps > 0) [ set v psugar-of max-one-of ps [psugar] ; v is max sugar w/in vision set ps ps with [psugar = v] ; ps is legal sites w/ v sugar set d distance min-one-of ps [distance myself] ; d is min dist from me to ps agents set p random-one-of ps with [distance myself = d] ; p is one of the min dist patches if (psugar >= v and includeMyPatch?) [set p patch-here] setxy pxcor-of p pycor-of p ; jump to p set sugar sugar + psugar-of p ; consume its sugar ask p [setpsugar 0] ; .. setting its sugar to 0 ] set sugar sugar - metabolism ; eat sugar (metabolism) set age age + 1 end On my computer, the Python code takes 15.5 sec to run 1000 steps; on the same laptop, the NetLogo simulation running in Java inside the browser finishes 1000 steps in less than 6 sec. EDIT: Just checked Repast, using Java implementation. And it's also about the same as NetLogo at 5.4 sec. Recent comparisons between Java and Python suggest no advantage to Java, so I guess it's just my code that's to blame? EDIT: I understand MASON is supposed to be even faster than Repast, and yet it still runs Java in the end.
