• Looking for definitive answer to accessing a network drive/NAS/SMB drive via Windows 7 HOME and Windows 7 Professional. Is it possible and how?

  I want to be able to access my Lacie 2Big network drive in Windows 7 Explorer. I have a machine with Windows 7 Home and one with Windows 7 Professional. Neither Windows 7, home or pro, can access the drive. The Windows 7 Home machine displays the drive in its Explorer, with the capacity, but on clicking the icon, I get another window, blank with the busy pointer which does not eventually stop. The drive is working perfectly. How do I know this? Because I can access it with no problems on my Apple Mac, Windows XP home and Ubuntu machines on the same network as the Windows 7 machines. Except for the Windows XP home machine that required Lacie ethernet agent program, the Mac and the Ubuntu machines needed no setup, the drive appeared like any other drive. So my 2 questions: Is it possible to access a network share drive, e.g. a NAS like Lacie 2big in Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional. If so how? I read on Microsoft's own forums and elsewhere that network sharing drives, e.g. via SambaSMB is NOT possible on Windows 7 Home. • WIM2VHD failing with "Cannot derive Volume GUID from mount point."

  I'm trying to use WIM2VHD according to the instructions on Scott Hanselman's blog post to create a Sysprepped VHD image to boot from. I've installed the WAIK, and I have my Windows 7 sources mounted as a virtual drive. We will run the script one at time instead of running them all together and try to guess the answer. I am confident that many will get it correct but if you do not get correct, you learn something new. Let us create database and sample table. • DFSR - What happens when one server gets maxed out?

  What happens when one server in a DFSR pool maxes out its disk space? I am at the very beginning of my research in DFS/R and this struck me. I plan on implementing this on one server with RAID1 (160GB) and on another server with a RAID5 (500GB). What happens when my 1st server with 160GB disks, run out of space? Will it spill over to the 500GB server? Is it advisable at all to even have the RAID1 server in the DFSR pool? Because the RAID1 server is also my Domain Controller. Hope you guys can help me out here (OS are Win2k3R2)

• Why does my Internet slow to a crawl unless I reboot my router every few days?

  A few weeks ago, I noticed that my Internet connection had slowed down to a crawl. I waited a few days hoping it would go away on its own, but it didn't get better. So I asked this question about how to make it faster. The problem went away after I updated to the latest firmware, so I didn't follow up too carefully. But every few days since then, my Internet has slowed down again. Unlike before, all I have to do to fix it is open the router administration page and press the "Reboot" button. Nothing else seems to work, though I'm sure there are options I haven't tried. If it makes a difference, my girlfriend and I both transfer large amounts of data fairly routinely for school (videoconferencing, downloading entire recorded lectures). The router is a Cisco/Linksys 160N V3 that's about a year old. Most of the time, it deals with just two standard Windows 7 laptops. The only thing I came across while searching for answers/dupes was this question, which seems similar superficially, but probably doesn't have the same root issue. Anyways, it's not resolved. What could be causing these slowdowns, and how can I get rid of them?

  We have Acrobat 8 Pro at work, and our media was painfully out of date. Rather than install all of the machines at 8.0.0 and then do the 6 or 7 consecutive reboots adobe expects you to be ok with I decided I'd integrate the .msp files into the installer. • How do you re-mount an ext3 fs readwrite after it gets mounted readonly from a disk error?

  Its a relatively common problem when something goes wrong in a SAN for ext3 to detect the disk write errors and remount the filesystem read-only. Thats all well and good, only when the SAN is fixed I can't figure out how to re-re-mount the filesystem read-write without rebooting. • Remove server hangs, gets stuck. How to debug?

  I have an vps running on VmWare ESX with Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. It has been running smoothly for the past 3 months, however recently we've notices two strange bugs. a. The server hangs, today was second time. The nature of the hang is very strange. I can ping to the server server, it sends back response fine. However all other services like sshd, apache, mysql etc do not respond at all. When working, telnet servername 22 Escape character is '^]'. SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.X Debian-5ubuntu1 And other web services would run fine. When its hung, I can make tcp connections to 22 as well as 80 but receive no response at all. telnet servername 22 Escape character is '^]'. How can I debug this problem? Is there any daemons I can run that will periodically log status? Please tell me as to how to proceed with it. b. The another strange problem is that, of lately I am unable to transfer files larger than around 100KB, smaller files of around 1-2 KB works file. scp anotherserver:filename . or wget http://www.example.com/file would get stuck. There is still around 6GB of space remaining, so I don't think that is an issue. Any pointers where I should look into?

  Having installed Team Foundation Server 2010 on Windows Server 2008, I need an easy URL for our developers to access their repositories. The default URL for the TFS repositories is http://localhost:8080/tfs Now I want the subdomain domain tfs.server.domain.com to point at http://localhost:8080/tfs. And when you write access tfs.server.domain.com/repos_name it should redirect to http://localhost:8080/tfs/repos_name. How can I do this in IIS 7? I already tried using the following rule, but it does not work. • How to point any *.mydomain variation to localhost (for development)?

  Hi all. I am developing a site, which will make use of any given [variation of] subdomain name part (that is, the part prefixed before the host name and, optionally, the TLD part). I would imagine that in production, that would be an easy feat - make sure the DNS for second-level domain name part points to an IP, set up Apache2 virtual host to listen on that (or any) IP port 80, and just use PHP to make decisions based on the "Host" request header. However, currently the site is localhost, since I am developing it using my workstation, so first I patched the /etc/hosts to include: 127.0.0.1 mydomain I only used one name part (arguably a custom TLD) so as to not interfere with the Internet domain names. Then I set up a VirtualHost directive for Apache 2.2 like: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName mydomain But now I can see that f.e. example.mydomain does not point to localhost, meaning the the /etc/hosts addition is not effective for "something.mydomain". It appears the rules are taken verbatim, and also I have checked that wildcards like *.mydomain are not allowed. Is there a solution for this?

• How can I tell my dd-wrt router to use someone's Amazon Affiliates link when I point my browser to amazon.com?

  Here's what I'd like to do. Instead of a one-time donation to one of my favorite free tools (junecloud.com) I'd like to do what they suggest here and use their Amazon Affiliates link to do all my Amazon shopping. I shop at amazon once or twice a week, so this is a great way to let them earn lots of long-term cash without me dropping a dime. My thought was to go into my dd-wrt enabled router and tell it, "any time I go to amazon.com on any computer in the house, please go to http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?link_code=ur2&tag=junecloud-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&location=%2F instead. (That URL simply redirects me to amazon.com but every purchase I make during that session is credited to JuneCloud.) Once logged into dd-wrt, I went to Services Services DNSMasq but I'm not really sure how to get it to work from there, or if it's even possible. I know I can redirect IP addresses, but I'm looking to redirect someone on my network from amazon.com to the special amazon affiliate code link. Hope that's clear. Thanks for any replies!

• College network - can I point non-domain student computers to our SUS server?

  Since I started here 3 months ago, one of the things that's really bothered me about the way this network is setup is something that shows up on the daily bandwidth consumption report. I get a list of top-visited sites by hits and by size, and invariably the top site (to the point that it's bigger than all the other top sites combined) is au.download.windowsupdate.com. We're pulling in ~30GB/day in windows updates. This is every day, not just after a patch Tuesday. After a patch day, it jumps closer to 40GB for a couple days. The key here is that almost none if it is by machines that I'm responsible for. My machines are for the most part fully patched, and when they're not they'll pull from a SUS server, so new updates are downloaded only once. It used to be closer to 50GB/day because most of the machines in our computer labs use DeepFreeze and weren't applying updates correctly, but that's fixed now. So the problem is definitely student-owned machines in the dorms, some of which are re-downloading the same updates in background each day, over and over. I'd love to have these machines start pulling from our SUS server. Then, if they don't ever actually install them at least they're not leeching bandwidth from our public internet connection. Any ideas on how to resolve the situation?

• Interpolation between two 3D points?

  I'm working with some splines which define a path a character follows (you can see a gameplay video here to get a better understanding of what's going on: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BndobjOiZ6g). Basically the characters 'forward' look direction is set to the 'forward' direction of the spline and when players tilt their phone left and right the character is strafed along its 'right' coordinate. The issue with this is (rather obviously) in performance, interpolating over a spline to find the nearest position and tangent relative to the player is an incredibly costly operation. To get by this I cache a finite number of positions in what I call 'SplineDetails', the class is as follows: public class SplineDetails { public SplineDetails() { Forward = Vector3.forward; Position = Vector3.one * float.MaxValue; Alpha = -1; } public float Alpha; // [0,1] measured along length of spline where 0 is the initial point and 1 is the end point of the spline public Vector3 Position; // the point of the spline at this alpha public Vector3 Forward; // the forward tangent of the spline at this alpha } I populate this with say 30 coordinates and I can give a rough estimate of a coordinate and 'forward' based on a position past in. It's not as accurate but it's much faster. But now I'd like to make the system work better by estimating positions and 'forward' directions by interpolating between two of the cached points though I'm stuck trying to figure out some logic. My first problem is, how can I determine between which two points the object is? Given each point can be placed at different intervals along the spline it could mean that two points in front or behind the object can be closer to the object. The other problem is to figure out the proportion between the two paths it's between, i.e. if there is a point a at coordinate (0,0,0) and point b at coordinate (1,0,0) if the object is at position (0.5,0,0) then the result it should give is '0.5' (as it is equal distance away from point a and point b). That's a simple example, but what if the object is at coordinate (0.5,3,0) for example?

• Difficult to point-and-click target with Apple Magic Trackpad?

  My Magic Trackpad is great for most things involving dragging and gestures, but for simple point-and-click use it is starting to get really annoying. For example, my bank has a numeric code that I need to enter from a visual grid on the screen, by clicking on the six numbers in order. To do this is quite difficult with the Magic Trackpad. Idea 1: it is because when you start dragging on the touchpad, there is a brief delay before the mouse starts to move. The delay might be enough to screw up my anticipation of where the cursor is going to go. Idea 2: it may have to do with the cursor acceleration. If I move it a little, the cursor moves a little. If I move it a lot, it goes much faster. I have tried various settings in the preference pane, and although the cursor does move more or less quickly, it doesn't seem any more or less easy to hit a given target. As I am writing this post, I tried a brief experiment -- I chose a spot on the page (the bracket in the superuser logo) and tried to move the cursor there in one quick movement. It's extremely difficult, even though I've been using Macs and touchpads since 1999. There is something about the behavior of the trackpad that is making it impossible for me to learn how to accurately predict where the cursor will end up. Does anyone else have this problem?

  In Apache, there's a way I can make phpMyAdmin available globally to all VirtualHosts I set up. In Apache, it looks like this: <IfModule mod_alias.c> Alias /phpmyadmin "c:/AppServ/www/phpMyAdmin" </IfModule> This way I reach phpmyadmin with prepending /phpmyadmin to all my domain names, and I can see phpmyadmin's initial page. (So for example it works for all my domains like this: http://example_1.com/phpmyadmin, http://example_2.com/phpmyadmin, http://example_3.com/phpmyadmin also does work). In IIS, there's an "Add Virtual Directory..." option when right clicking on a given site. Here I can set up e.g. phpMyAdmin's path to be reached with prepending /phpmyadmin to the given domain (e.g. http://example_1.com/phpmyadmin), but isn't there a "global" setting similar to Apache's Alias? Or do I have to add a virtual directory to every given sites one by one? I'm just curious, it's not a hard work to do it, but I'm interested in it if there exists another method to do it. • Difficult to point-and-click target with Apple Magic Trackpad?

  My Magic Trackpad is great for most things involving dragging and gestures, but for simple point-and-click use it is starting to get really annoying. For example, my bank has a numeric code that I need to enter from a visual grid on the screen, by clicking on the six numbers in order. To do this is quite difficult with the Magic Trackpad. Idea 1: it is because when you start dragging on the touchpad, there is a brief delay before the mouse starts to move. The delay might be enough to screw up my anticipation of where the cursor is going to go. Idea 2: it may have to do with the cursor acceleration. If I move it a little, the cursor moves a little. If I move it a lot, it goes much faster. I have tried various settings in the preference pane, and although the cursor does move more or less quickly, it doesn't seem any more or less easy to hit a given target. As I am writing this post, I tried a brief experiment -- I chose a spot on the page (the bracket in the superuser logo) and tried to move the cursor there in one quick movement. It's extremely difficult, even though I've been using Macs and touchpads since 1999. There is something about the behavior of the trackpad that is making it impossible for me to learn how to accurately predict where the cursor will end up. Does anyone else have this problem?

• How do you re-mount an ext3 fs readwrite after it gets mounted readonly from a disk error?

  Its a relatively common problem when something goes wrong in a SAN for ext3 to detect the disk write errors and remount the filesystem read-only. Thats all well and good, only when the SAN is fixed I can't figure out how to re-re-mount the filesystem read-write without rebooting. I have tried all sorts of different mount/tune2fs/dmsetup commands and I cannot figure out how to get it to un-flag the block device as write-protected. Rebooting will fix it, but I'd much rather do it on-line. An hour of googling has gotten me nowhere either. Save me ServerFault.

• Iptables: how do I LOG what's not being ACCEPTED and limit what gets logged?

  How do I log what's not being accepted by the following rule: iptables -A OUTPUT -p icmp --icmp-type 3 -m -limit --limit 10/minute -j ACCEPT And how do I limit what's being logged because I don't want to log 1000s of pings? My first thought was: iptables -A OUTPUT -p icmp --icmp-type 3 -m -limit --limit 50/day -j LOG iptables -A OUTPUT -p icmp --icmp-type 3 -m -limit --limit 10/minute -j ACCEPT But that doesn't seem right to me. I think this limits the logging to 50/day but not necessarily what is not being accepted, or am I wrong?

• Can't get subdomain to point to working collabNet server - what am I doing wrong?

  Hello everyone, I am running a web server using CollabNet SubVersion EDGE. You can view it at 71.13.105DOT51 I also run another website, http://www.tutorialcraft.com. I went into my Cpanel, and created a DNS record as follows: svn.tutorialcraft.com. 14400 IN A 71.13.105.51 Yet, if you go to http://svn.tutorialcraft.com, it doesn't load. I tested to see if I was doing some wrong, so I created a ebay.tutorialcraft.com and pointed it to eBay servers, and it worked fine (it's not up now). Anyone have any ideas? Thanks UPDATE NOTES: I tried to point svn.tutorialcraft.com to my original IP address (the one that www.tutorialcraft.com is pointed to, and it still won't load. Also, may be worthy of note, I am running a wordpress multi-site server, and I have disabled blog redirection. • Dell PowerEdge 2950 III running XenServer with 2 VMs gets sluggish after a week and needs rebooted?

  It has weird hangs and then random CPU spikes that do a ton at once. While remoted into the VMs I get an update all at once then it hangs for another 20 seconds. When it lets it go through I get a CPU spike. Basic server specs for the HW node is: 8 CPUs, 16GB ram 1TB HDD total iPERC6 raid 10 The VMs are barely used but I have them spec'd at VM 1: 4 CPUs, 4GB Ram VM2: 4 CPUs 6GB ram The HW node currently says it's total CPU usage is 11% AND Used Memory is at 63%out of 16GB I'm new to this stuff so I'm not sure. I just recently installed this and set it all up. Please advise if you can!

• Drawing Grid in 3D view - Mathematically calculate points and draw line between them (Not working)

  I'm trying to draw a simple grid from a starting point and expand it to a size. Doing this mathematically and drawing the lines between each point, but since the "DrawPrimitives(LineList)" doesn't work the way it should work, And this method can't even draw lines between four points to create a simple Rectangle, so how does this method work exactly? Some sort of coordinate system: [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] [ ][2.2][ ][0.2][ ][2.2][ ] [ ][2.1][1.1][ ][1.1][2.1][ ] [ ][2.0][ ][0.0][ ][2.0][ ] [ ][2.1][1.1][ ][1.1][2.1][ ] [ ][2.2][ ][0.2][ ][2.2][ ] [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] I've checked with my method and it's working as it should. It calculates all the points to form a grid. This way I should be able to create Points where to draw line right? This way, if I supply the method with Size = 2 it starts at 0,0 and works it through all the corners (2,2) on each side. So, I have the positions of each point. How do I draw lines between these? VerticeCount = must be number of Points in this case, right? So, tell me, if I can't supply this method with Point A, Point B, Point C, Point D to draw a four vertice rectangle (Point A - B - C - D) - how do I do it? How do I even begin to understand it? As far as I'm concered, that's a "Line list" or a list of points where to draw lines. Can anyone explain what I'm missing? I wish to do this mathematically so I can create a a custom grid that can be altered.
