• Ubuntu 10.04 preseed unattended install results in faulty partition table

  I'm currently trying to set up an unattended installation of Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) through preseeding. But whenever I try to create a custom partition scheme, the Debian installer (which Ubuntu is using) produces a faulty partition table.   One of my clients has a needlessly complex e-mail setup for a couple of domains, which is causing problems when they try to send e-mail between them. They have a couple of domains where mail follows a slightly weird path: Users connect to an Exchange server to send e-mail The exchange server relays the message to an ISP-owned SMTP server as a smart host The ISPs server delivers the mail to the mail exchanger specified in DNS The mail exchanger is another server that runs hMailServer The Exchange server connects to the hMail server via POP3 and retrieves the messages. The problem arises when they send mail between addresses in the same domain, or two addresses that are present on the hMail server. hMail requires SMTP authentication when sending from local to local addresses, so the messages don't arrive. Removing SMTP authentication isn't really an option, as the server has been the target of spam being sent from spoofed local addresses. SMTP authentication prevents this. It is possible to add the ISP's mail server as an IP range with specific rules, but this seems inelegant. Bearing in mind I only have access to the hMail server and not the Exchange server, is there a better way of going about this?

• Mystery Print Separator Page

  Good morning! After a recent site upgrade to WebSphere 7.0 from 6.1 on an AIX server, our users reported a print separator page appearing on a certain type of report, and only on one printer. Trouble is, no one (devs, sysadmins, users) knows where it came from or where to turn it off. Based on the info, the first step was to check the app, but we don't have print separators in our code. The report they're using also lacks even an option to separate. Then I asked the WebSphere gurus but they shook their heads. Ditto the network/print server team. If anyone can identify the source of this separator, I can take that back to the relevant team and have it switched off. • IIS High use & Server Performance issues

  Have an SBS2011 running Exchange, a database app and a few other things serving 5 users (3 low use, 1 high). The server was never specced for the database app so it isn't as powerful as I'd like... Only 12GB RAM. We have increasingly found performance problems with this server, last week it was so bad I couldn't even connect remotely. To free up some available RAM I have (over the past month or so): Restricted the Exchange Message Store to 1GB with (so far) no ill effects. Restricted SQL Databases (including SBSMonitoring and Sharepoint/##SSEE (Which isn't used)). Now I am finding that IIS Worker threads are using up the available memory and I have (so far) been unable to track down much useful information about restricting them. This server is not 'serving' anything web-based apart from OWA that I am finding people using because Outlook is so slow (again related to the Servers performance). I am aware that Exchange on SBS2011 is designed to use up available resources (and concede when other applications request). But it is not doing so (or anywhere near fast enough) for our needs. Opening the database application (using Postgres) takes 5+ minutes from client machines and regularly times out or crashes due to this. After a reboot (before SQL/Exchange/IIS databases are very large/totally cached) we get the performace we need and expect. Previously a reboot once a month was enough... Then once a week... Now they have taken to rebooting it almost daily!

• File in use when it's really not

  I am running Windows 7 Professional 32 bit on a Server 2008 network. I am getting a weird issue with an excel document where I open it up one morning, update it, save and close, the next morning I come in, open it up and it says "This file is in use and locked by csmith" which "csmith" is me! So I click on the cancel button, open it up again and it comes up fine. I can edit, save and close with no problem. But then have the same issue the next morning. Another weird thing is that we have a calendar shared in "Public Folders" under Outlook that seems to be having the same issue, which happens to be a calendar made in Excel. Exchange 2010 is installed on the server and the clients are using Exchange 2007. In the instance with the calendar, it will show conflicting edits have been made and you must keep one item or all items. And it shows an edit date of 4/24/2012 and 6/1/2012. But, there were NO edits done on 6/1, just tried opening it. This problem does not occur under my profile, but 2 others. These machines are ALSO running Windows 7 Professional 32 bit. We have a mix of Windows 7 and Windows XP machines on our network if that is any help. These issues did not start happening until we migrated from a server running Server 2003 and Exchange 2000, which the new server is running Server 2008 and Exchange 2010 as stated above. Is there something on the server side that is configured wrong?

• ssh connection operation timed out using rsync

  I use rsync to backup my remote server on my local device but when I combine it with a cron job my ssh times out. Just to be clear, the data is stored on a remote server and I want it stored on my local server. The backup request must be sent from my local server to the remote server. The command for backup up the data is working when I just type it in terminal like this: rsync -chavzP --stats USERNAME@IPADDRES: PATH_TO_BACKUP LOCAL_PATH_TO_BACKUP but when I combine it with a cron job like this: 10 11 * * * rsync -chavzP --stats USERNAME@IP_ADDRESS: PATH_TO_BACKUP LOCAL_PATH_TO_BACKUP the ssh connection times out.
