  • Is 50% download speed on a wireless G network normal?

    I have a wired connection of about 36Mb/s, but my wireless speed is max at about 18-19Mb/s. I have a WRT54G-TM (T-Mobile, 802.11G) router with DD-WRT firmware - I've upgraded it to latest build. Done some settings changes: changed channel - 13 wireless network mode - G-only ACK Timing - 0 Fragmentation Threshold and RTS Threshold - 2304 Basic Rate - All Signal/Noise ratio: -46/-94, signal quality ~50-60%. Is this normal with G networks? Edit: The AP is located about 2 meters from laptop, no walls or metal objects, but its next to a TV. I've done a channel scan (had problems locating it, go to "Status - Wireless - Site survey" - lame naming) and everybody else is on channels 1 and 6. Switched to channel 11 but it didn't help. As for trasmit power I got best results with default 71mw. The antenna might be a factor, I'm using the default 2 antennas.

    I currently have a single EC2 instance which is forcing all requests to be secure by using mod_rewrite: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} !443 RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}$1 [R,L] I am planning on moving to a load balanced setup, with multiple back-end instances. If I set up my EC2 load balancer with my certs, do I need to use SSL to communicate between the LB and my instances? If not, is it as simple as replacing the RewriteCond with RewriteCond %{HTTP:X-Forwarded_Proto} ^http$ Edit: I tried using the x-forwarded-proto, but it does not appear to work. Is there another way to detect if someone is connected to the LB via SSL?

  • How do I force Windows to play sound through the speakers only when a USB headset isn't connected?

    I'm using a speaker set connected through the green audio jack and a headset which I connect through USB. My problem is that every time I connect/disconnect my headset, I have to go through a lot of settings/restart some programs to make the sound go through the speakers again. What I want is to have audio play through the headset when it's connected, but if I disconnect the headset, I want the audio to automatically play through the speakers. For example, if I connect/disconnect the headset while listening to music, I have to restart the application to make the music play through the correct speaker/headset, and it shouldn't be that inconvenient. (I found this somewhat relevant topic, but the problem is that it doesn't really give an answer. (Also, it is 2 years old.))

  • Can my employer force me to backup my personal machine? [closed]

    Here's the background: Approximately 1.25 years ago, the company I work for was acquired by a larger 400 person company. Before acquisition (and today still) we are all remote employees using our own personal hardware for work-related duties (coding, email, etc). We are approximately 15 employees within the larger organization. Some time after acquisition, the now owning company was slapped with a civil lawsuit. Part of this lawsuit (discovery) is requiring them to retrieve & store from us any related information. Because we were a separate company up until acquisition, there is a high probability that our personal machines might contain information about what the lawsuit alleges (email, documents, chat logs?, etc). Obviously, this depends largely on the person's job function (engineer vs. customer support vs. CEO). All employees are being required to comply. Since acquisition (1.25 yrs), the new company has not provided us with company laptops/desktops. We continue to use personal hardware, licenses, etc for work. Email is via POP3s and not hanging around on the mail server - it's on everyone's client. Documents are spread across personal machines. So, now they want us each to backup our complete personal machines. They are allowing us to create a "personal" folder where we can place personal documents. That single folder will be excluded from backup. Of course, that means total re-arrangement of documents, etc. For most of us, 99% of the data on the machine is NOT related to work. So, what's the consensus? Should we comply? What is their recourse if we do not?

  • Download and locally store all emails from all mailboxes on Office365?

    We have a business that uses Office365 and we want to be able to save all the emails locally. I found a thread on Office365 community pertaining to this and basically it was stated that there is no direct way of accomplishing this. I am curious if anyone has considered this and if there is a good method for storing these emails locally, even if it's some nifty PowerShell programming. All I've come up with is having a master mailbox which can view all mailboxes, and just have it sync and archive locally to the computer. I have not tried this yet, as the storage file sounds like it will be huge, so this does not seem like a fantastic idea and I'm open to any suggestions!

  • How do I force a 64-bit windows 8.1 install?

    I have just purchased a copy of Windows 8.1 32-bit/64-bit from the MSDNAA program through my University. It came as an .iso file so I burned it to a DVD and installed / registered without any issues. I just found out it's a 32-bit install though, and I'm running a 64-bit laptop (Dell Studio 1555). The exact produce name I purchased is Microsoft Windows 8.1 Professional 32/64-bit (English). Is that just another name for "32-bit version that also works on 64-bit machines"? I have 4GB and I would like to code for 64-bit architectures so not having a 64-bit environment will be a real pain. I didn't see any options to choose the install type (it had Windows 7 64-bit previously but I completely wiped it). Any ideas?

When I hit 'Enter' to send a chat message, the characters indicating a new line are not being correctly interpreted. Here's a basic SYN-ACK between the two of us: His view: me: SYN!him: ACK! My view: him: SYN!me: ACK!me: ACK! Is there any way I can configure Wine to handle this correctly? Please note: this is a required application and I have no way to change its configuration.

  • Excel 2007: plot data points not on an axis/ force linear x-incrementation without altering integrity of non-linear data

    In Excel, how does one go about plotting points that don't have an x component that is an x-axis label? For example, in my graph, the x-components are derived from the cosine function and aren't linear, but Excel is displaying them as if .0016 to .0062 to .0135 is an equal incrementation. How would I change this so that the x-axis has an even incrementation without altering the integrity of the points themselves? In other words, how do I plot a point with an x component independent from the x-axis label?

  • How do I force an exchange database to become "active"?

    We had a catastrophic failure where all that remains is a single edb file. No backups. No log files. The database that remains is on the "passive" copy. The "active" copy is missing, but the server is active. The Exchange console reports that the edb file needs to be reseeded, however there is no source to reseed from. How do I make the "invalid" database file (missing logs) valid? How do I make exchange recognize this as a valid database to use as a primary?

  • Why does my Microsoft Habu force me to unplug and replug in when booting up?

    I'm not too sure why, but every single time I boot my computer, I have to unplug and replug my semi-new Microsoft Habu, when I use Windows 7. Why does it do this? I've been through my BIOS, msconfig, and what-not.. It just seems to happen all the time. I've even looked in forums, with people resorting to changing their mouse because of the same issue.. It's stupid. Hopefully someone else can help... hopefully someone with experience with this mouse.

It opens up in Chrome since it is my default browser but if I already have a page open it will open in a new tab on that same window. I can't tell you how many times I forget about this and close the window out, accidentally losing the other tab too. Ofcourse, I can open a new chrome window and find it under recently closed tabs but I would really just prefer if they opened in their own window so I can prevent this.

  • How can I force mail clients like Outlook or Thunderbird to load SSL images with invalid certificate?

    Essentially, we only encounter this issue with our testing environments, where we send mail that contains HTTPS links that point to test servers with self-signed SSL certificates. In a browser I can select to accept the certificate. Is there something similar for mail clients like Thunderbird or Outlook that I can use? Currently, we don't see any images in our test mail, which greatly confuses the UAT team.

    If you have large files in a content source that is being indexed by Sharepoint you might run into the following error message: “The file reached the maximum download limit. Check that the full text of the document can be meaningfully crawled.” This is usually caused because SharePoint’s MaxDownloadSize setting is set lower than the size of the file you are attempting to index. You can increase this value, restart the service then kick off a full crawl in order to fix this issue, but SharePoint 2007 and 2010 have different methods for accomplishing this task.   Sharepoint 2007 Open up the Registry editor and increase the MaxDownloadSize value to a number (in MB) higher than the largest file being indexed. You can find this at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Search\1.0\Gathering Manager After you increase the size, cycle the search service and kick off a full crawl of the content source in question.   Sharepoint 2010 With SharePoint 2010 you can use PowerShell via the Sharepoint 2010 Console in order to change the MaxDownloadSize. But occasionally, if you are developing x86 based system and especially working on some boot code, such as boot sector of BIOSLOADER, that will be a problem. Normally, as PB provides the prebuilt boot sector image but if you ever need to rebuilt it, what should you do? You may say as it's an x86, perhaps you can use VS or Windows SDK to build it. But unfortunately, today's desktop Windows tool chains are also 32 or even 64 bits only, you need to find something older. VC++ 6.0, but how can you find one?     This function will download and install ,NET 4.0. It uses the Get-Framework-Versions function to determine if the installation is necessary or not. Internet Connectivity will be required as the script auto downloads the setup file (and sleeps for 360 seconds... I had a function in there to monitor for install completion at first, turns out the setup file spawns so many childprocesses the function just got confused and locked up -_-)Alternatively you could drop the installation file in the folder specified on the $folderPath variable too. That will skip the download and use the file. This function easily adapts in to other versions f.e.     I recently bought the wonderfully looking and reviewed Amnesia The Dark Descent and I'm trying to install it. The first time I tried to download it, I had to stop in the middle of the download (may have broken something). The second time I tried to download, at the end of the download it gave me the following error: Failed to fetch https://private-ppa.launchpad.net/commercial-ppa-uploaders/amnesia/ubuntu/pool/main/a/amnesia/amnesia_1.2.1-0ubuntu2_i386.deb Size mismatch Now, whenever I try to download it, it gives me this error: The following packages have unmet dependencies: amnesia: Depends: libalut0 (>= 1.0.1) but it is not going to be installed Depends: libc6 (>= 2.4) but 2.15-0ubuntu10.3 is to be installed Depends: libfontconfig1 (>= 2.8.0) but 2.8.0-3ubuntu9.1 is to be installed Depends: libfreetype6 (>= 2.2.1) but 2.4.8-1ubuntu2 is to be installed Depends: libgcc1 (>= 1:4.1.1) but 1:4.6.3-1ubuntu5 is to be installed Depends: libopenal1 (>= 1:1.13) but 1:1.13-4ubuntu3 is to be installed Depends: libsdl1.2debian (>= 1.2.10-1) but 1.2.14-6.4ubuntu3 is to be installed Depends: libstdc++6 (>= 4.1.1) but 4.6.3-1ubuntu5 is to be installed Depends: libxft2 (> 2.1.1) but 2.2.0-3ubuntu2 is to be installed Depends: zlib1g (>= 1:1.1.4) but 1:1.2.3.4.dfsg-3ubuntu4 is to be installed I already searched the net and ran a few command line commands. Ex: sudo dpkg --configure -a sudo apt-get install -f Or configure the software packages to download from Main instead of the local UK server. But I'm really not figuring out a solution. I have a fresh install of the latest LTS (12.04). The only non-standard thing so far is that I installed gnome-shell (?) because I really can't stand Unity. Help would be much appreciated. I am currently more than entertained enough with World of Goo and Command & Conquer, but I will want to play Amnesia in the close future.

    In one of the virtual environment while I was trying to add SQL Server Database (.mdf) file to asp.net project I encountered following error: Connections to SQL Server files (.mdf) require SQL Server Express 2005 to function properly. Please verify the installation of the component or download from the URL:  For a long time I am using SQL Server 2012 but this error was a bit interesting to me. I realize that there should not be any need of the SQL Server 2005 installation. I quickly figured out that I can remove this error if I do as mentioned below: Open Microsoft Visual Studio Select Tools >> Options >> Database Tools >> Data Connections Enter the name of an installed instance in “SQL Server Instance Name” field. Click OK If you do not know the instance name, you can follow either of the options. 1) Use the command line sqlcmd utility 2) Using SQL Server Management Studio Is there any other way to resolve this error?
